Todd Field is meticulous about form , from mise-en-scène and lighting to the rhythm of dialogue and composition. But this formal obsession drains the film of emotional vitality. There is no real rupture, no inner explosion, even though the subject matter is centered on the unraveling of a human being.
TÁR, as a character, never fully resonates , not as an anti-hero, nor as a victim. Blanchett may technically deliver a masterful performance, but the character lacks the raw emotional layers she needs: pain, self-destruction, or even a visceral hunger for power. What we see is Blanchett performing TÁR, not living her.
The film intends to portray TÁR's downfall, but we never witness a real transformation not even a single moment of authentic vulnerability. The result is a well-crafted essay, not an emotional experience, nor a truly thought-provoking journey
The film gestures toward a critique of cancel culture, institutional power in the arts, and the ethics of creative authority , but it never commits to a clear stance. Neither defending TÁR, nor fully condemning her, it ends up striking an intellectual pose rather than engaging in any deep moral excavation.
The reason to deeply admire Chazelle's Whiplash is that he truly understands the value of music and the musician. He feels, almost viscerally, the intense passion that music can generate when placed at the heart of drama and emotional tension between characters. It gives life to the entire narrative without it, you simply can't imagine the emotional push and pull between them.
