I tried putting the controversial comments of the lead actress aside and just enjoy the film. Unfortunately, it was bad. Very bad.
The only positive I can think of is that Zegler is a good singer. There was some impressive vocals. That's it.
The story was beyond boring. The CGI was like something from an early 90s b-movie, the painful attempt to change the original story into something else was so obvious that it was distracting from the out.
The "Seven Magical Creatures" left me scratching my head. Why CGI? Why not just cast people with dwarfism? Why are they called "Magical Creatures"? There are plenty of actors with dwarfism who are excellent and would have added a lot.

The first thing I would say is that the acting was fantastic. The little kid, Estella Kahiha, was one of the best child actors I've seen in a long time. All performers were solid, and played their roles well. The only issue I had was the story development itself. It just ... kind of dragged on, and didn't explain things as well as I would have liked.
Someone else wrote that it is a "polarizing film" and I'd agree with that. I saw it on the big screen, so it had a few jump-scare moments with the surround sound. Overall, I think any rating between 4 and 5.5 is fair. Worth a watch, but nothing more.

I really liked this film. So often nowadays there's a temptation amongst film makers to sanitise reality. This was not one of them.
I watched this movie because it had one of my favourite actors performing in it (Sylvester McCoy), and the story development did not disappoint.
Some people might say "they shouldn't have said this" or "they shouldn't have said that" but I was happy to see the story presented as it was. This is reality.
Hopefully it raises awareness to the social scourge of young girls being abused and trafficked.
There's a lot of human trafficking-themed movies out there in the past 5 years, and this is one of the better ones in my opinion.
