Writer, Producer and Director Danny Carrales has again demonstrated that Christian movies are getting better and better. This is an example of an independent film that has a "big budget" look. The acting is very good, which is usually the first sign of a low budget movie. Carrales has the ability to be very creative and resourceful with what he has to work with, as he has done in his other films such as, "The Gathering," and "Escape from Hell." In this case, he delivers a very dramatic, well told rendition of the John Bunyan classic. The cinematography and special effects are wonderful. This thought-provoking story is powerful and is sure to draw emotion. If you haven't read the story lately or not at all, this film is definitely worth checking out. I highly recommend it.
This is a must-see film for a good story and a great Jimmy Stewart performance. Based on a true story, a Chicago newspaper reporter named McNeal (Stewart) investigates a newspaper ad offering a reward for the killer of a cop that was murdered years ago. He discovers the ad was made by a hard working maid who believes her son was wrongfully convicted of that murder. McNeal is cynical and unbelieving at first, but his instincts get the better of him as he eventually becomes convinced that the man is innocent. He begins a passionate crusade to find the real truth. It is an excellent murder mystery shot on-location in the streets of Chicago for realism. It is also a rare opportunity to see police procedures for investigating crimes in the 1940's. The film offers a lot of "Arcata" on how things happened in those days. One example is with the lack of copying machines, researchers had to photograph important documents with a snapshot camera and develop the film. Another printing technique of the time plays a vital role in helping McNeal find key evidence.
This film was excellent. I'm so glad to see filmmakers of faith beginning to make quality movies. This film will really get you thinking about the reality of heaven and hell. For those who believe that the Bible is truly God's Word, an instruction manual to how to live life on earth, then this film maintains the accuracy of scripture. I like the way the director took a NDE (Near Death Experience) of someone who had not accepted Christ as Savior and their eyes were opened to what Hell is really like. His use of a fictional story to make a point worked very well. I highly recommend this film to anyone interested in NDE's or to find out what the Bible says about Heaven and Hell or life after death.
