Izzard was both hysterical and insightful in his humor. He definitely represents his own little niche in the comedic world.
It's a pity more Americans won't see this stand-up routine due to its PAL-only availability.

What was with this plot-less, melodramatic film?
I watched this film with 2 other friends, all three of us being in to exotic / alternative / independent films. But when it was over, not one of us could shed the slightest bit of light on what this film was driving at. Near as we could figure, there was some kind of Faustian deal-with-the-devil / punishment-for-sins deal going on. But that was the closest thing to a coherent synopsis anyone could muster.
Yes, some of the camera and lighting work was good, but you don't make a film just to show good camera work. That's like cooking a meal that tastes awful just to showcase the silverware.
Overall, I felt the film was overdone and self-aggrandizing. It's point (if it had one) was too obscure for it to be effective as art, and the plot was too disjointed to work as entertainment. It just exists for artsy types to feel deep.

In the future, most people have cybernetic implants and everybody connects directly to the net through neural interfaces. Now, an unknown hacker called the Puppet Master has found a way to break the firewall and hack the human mind.
Strengths: One of the few pieces of Anime to come out of Japan that doesn't involve ninjas or space-monsters. Crisp, detailed drawing of a quality rarely seen in animation (I've watched the scene of the heroine riding the ferry in the rain a dozen times, and I swear each raindrop is unique). It's good sci-fi and great action.
Weaknesses: There's this running theme about identity in the movie, which has potential to make it a deeper story than an action flick. However, like much anime, you can't help but feel much was lost in the translation. The combination of the characters talking really fast (a by-product, I assume, of trying to express concepts that take more words in English than Japanese) and somewhat literal translations of complex ideas makes me really wish I spoke Japanese to get the full effect.
Still, a strong and fun piece of animation. One to own if you are into the genre.
