Conceptually and in execution, Game of Thrones has much going for it. They clearly invested a lot in development, casting, costuming, and so on. So kudos to all that.
In watching it, however, I felt it was a narrative shaped by modern values and ideas, plus way too much gratuitous violence for its own sake. I felt that the series was also a victim of the "shock horror" that has become too common in modern cinematic efforts. Old school Hollywood artists knew how to work with the audience to let them construct the horror of whatever was going on in the realm of their imaginations based on cues. Often these could be far more horrible than what we are presented with onscreen. And that was my reaction to a lot of it, did we really need to see all that? You can't unsee it, you know.
As others have suggested, the ending was mediocre, at best. Some characters got their deserved comeuppance. Others got off way too lightly considering all that they had done. I watched it once. Would I so so again? Probably not. I find the Lord of the Rings a better fantasy setting tale, and The Godfather has more plausible violence. But that's me.
