Before you see this movie, step back and take a deep breath...
Phantom fans... Please remember this is a story. They are not trying to purposely impose a bad image of erik on the minds of America.
Slasher fans... this is a softer one, but IMHO, good.
Okay, Erik (The Phantom) has sold his soul to the devil in a Faust-like manner. He then becomes scarred (literally) by Satan himself.
Christine travels back in time after being hit on the head with a sand bag at an audition. Now in the 1800's, she meets Erik, who is in love with her...
It follows the general POTO storyline. Beautiful music, and some touching scenes.
Don't give up on POTO just because it has some violence and Robert Englund. Take it for what is is, not what you want it to be.

The Phantom of the Opera in this movie is not the classic Leroux or Webber version that many people envision. However, the story told is a good one. If you have some free time and you are ready for a good romance novel with a little bit of action, then pick up this movie. Charles Dance creates a sentimental Phantom of the Opera, but he shows a more powerful side by the end of the movie. Definitely a love story!!
If you are a Phantom phan, or know anything about POTO, then it may help you to know that this is the movie version of the Yeston/Kopit musical. It doesn't have the songs, but it follows the same basic plot line.

This movie is a filmed version of a stage play. The music is fairly good, and the chemistry between the Phantom and Christine is evident. With the goofy managers bickering and Carlotta's constant whining it is also quite funny. If you like musicals this will be a good one for you. It is not the Leroux telling of the story, but it is an entertaining story none-the-less.
