This is an OK well paced spy thriller. It is somewhat predictable and weak in places but has what should be at least a B+ cast. Some are excellent, and Naomi Rapace continues to impress. It could have been better but I did enjoy it. However why on earth was Orlando Bloom chosen to have a "Cockney accent" as in the title it is embarrassing. There was almost no need for it, or maybe even get an English actor.

A film of great performances that goes beyond that. It is a slow burner but entertaining if occasionally pretentious dialogue keeps ones interest. But as the story continues it makes a strength of what is usually a weakness and that is the lack of any likable character. As it unfolds it invites us to see Stephen Jeffreys vision of the 1660s through the eyes of a professional cynic and the commentaries of those around him. Depp is up to his usual exceptional standards as the anti hero who is in almost every scene and Malcovich delivers a subtle performance. But the show stealer is Samantha Morton who has the challenge of playing a talented actress and makes you believe.

I don't know if is historically accurate but given the tiny window it shows of the events I don't think it's relevant.

In my opinion the films biggest mistake was trying to sell it on it's debauchery, which I think was born out of a small studio thinking sex sells. If you went expecting a Lady Chatterly I can see how it would disappoint and it is no Shakespeare in Love. It stands on it's own merits as a powerful, dark, thoughtful piece which makes you question and reflect.

I haven't read any of the graphic novels but, even if I had, accuracy to a novel is not what makes a film great it's irrelevant really. This is a great film because it made me want to come here and write about it and persuade others to watch it so I can discuss it with them. I love and watch films I have over 1200 DVDs. I have voted on a few films and thrown around a handful of 10s but commented on only 3 so that's how significant I think this film is.

This worked at the right level because it is a sum of it's parts it's not held up just by performances, story or visuals but a well mixed cocktail of all the elements. It gripped and entertained but made me question and think whilst caring about the characters. It's well paced and very well written. It is, of course, helped by being visually very good, having great dialogue and some good performances.

Best film I have seen in a good while.
