Yes, wit. Some fun with a slice of history (Tavernier is no fool, specially talking about history, Lyonnaise cuisine and music (do you remember the beautiful, poignant and above five stars 'Round midnight...yes, I like most of Bertrand Tavernier's films). This time he take us on a trip to the Dumas territory, the same way he did the trick with Dale Turner (Dexter Gordon in 'Round midnight), but this time it's just for a happy roller coaster. Great in the acting department and using kid gloves to handle the plot as the old masters used to. If you want to have a break of all the "fast and furious" of nowadays cinema check this one.
Not really. "Soldados de Salamina" it's not a great novel, from my point of view. And like the main character, never gets to close to the real drama of the Spanish Civil War, except in two or three things. And we've got the same conflict with the film, besides the changes after the screen adaptation. I think it's a good movie for people who doesn't know too much about the Spanish Civil War, specially some scenes, when the journalist can talk with the old republican fighter it's a great moment, the best in the whole film. But the movie goes in and out of many nonsense, like the "modern gipsy" (a nice and great interpretation, but outside the movie, except for some relief for all the horror of the war we must face). And the narrative is bouncing without direction from start to end. Well, if you don't have any idea about the Spanish Civil War go ahead...if you know...you know
A great film, and quite scary, specially for Tavernier's view over the media (television here, but just replace that word, and nothing will be different), in a not so far future. Sad, because was Romy Schneider's last film. She, and Harvey Keitel, are in the leading roles, under Tavernier's direction the two in top form. In a way, this was ahead of other future "prophecy films", sure one of the best.
