This is absolutely the worst World War II movie I have ever seen. I have never seen so many decent actors great actors usually wasted so terribly as in this ridiculous waste of talent from the candy apple red blood, the ridiculous music that never seemed to fit the action to scene that would usually be referred to as action packed Had no dramatic value whatsoever even the lighting in so many scenes was so badly done there were scenes where the dialogue seemed like it was inexplicably dubbed. Robert Shaw Michael Caine didn't disgrace themselves exactly, but seemd to be acting in a vacuum, surrounded by more incompetence than I have ever seen ..it was at times painful to watch other times amusing in it's disastrous failure to engage any emotional reactions whatsoever.. I had to stop watching it! Every single thing about this movie was terrible. I don't know who this director was, but it seemed to be directed by nobody a shockingly bad attempt at entertainment.

I don't understand any less than glowing reviews for this incredible gem of a movie. I feel sorry for the dullards who cannot seem to appreciate the spirit of genius at work here the subject matter the script, the acting the production values the direction. Everything is amazing. The two acts are brilliant Sean Penn probably his best role. Since how brilliant he was in his very first role fast times at Ridgemont high he was a comic genius and this just goes to show you his range. He's a brilliant actor in a lot of stupid movies but here he is absolutely brilliant and rises to the occasion impressively there is so much rich detail in this true story of how words, language, and the ideas behind them forms a very basis of our culture kudos to the geniuses who made this movie and real sadness for those who can't seem to appreciate it to each his own, but this sure rings my bell.
