Survivalist movies are not my normal jam, but I happened upon Whiteout and was pleasantly surprised.
A brutal study of how far people will go when pushed to their limits.
For a relatively low budget indie, this movie punches way above its weight class with more action and nail-biting tension than I was expecting!
If you liked The Grey or The Edge or The Revenant, you will likely enjoy this ride as well.
The characters few like real multidimensional people each reacting to and handling the situation in their own way.
If you're looking for a brutal character study of the human psyche with some unexpected twists, Whiteout is worth the watch!

The use of the word 'solid' in my summary may not have been the greatest choice of words, as Primer's narrative is extremely complex and lucid. But brilliant. A film that really gives the brain a work out, you spend the majority of the film trying to wrap your mind around the complexities of and through the denseness of the cleverly constructed narrative.
This film, made for a mere $7000 really shows the epitome of production value. Million dollar explosions and Tom Cruise are NOT needed to make a quality film. Writer, Director, Producer, Editor, Actor Shane Carruth really demonstrates that a single solid idea can drive a film along a stimulating, thrilling trail, leaving you thinking about it for days afterwards as well as a strong desire to see it again.
Right from the outset, the film begins two steps ahead of you. As the film progresses and you race to catch-up, it tauntingly stays one step ahead until the last twenty minutes when it bounds forward with such momentum that you are left choking on it's dust in awe.
Think "Momento". Think brilliant. If you want to see something interesting for a change, see Primer.

A fantastic , visually brilliant film. This beautifully shot films narrative revolves around two young men (Damon and Affleck) who find themselves lost in an anonymous desert. Van Sant makes explicit use of the long take setting a slow yet intriguing pace for the film. "Gerry" embodies a combination of a dark sorrow and humour that the viewer experiences throughout the film. This is resultant from the vast mix of emotions experienced, and the uncertainty of the stability of the film space. This visually driven film is a must see for any film lover; critic, student, or buff.
