  • Skillhouse: Social Media Horror for 50 Cents

This 2025 film by Josh Stolberg with a brief appearance of the rapper, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson... just really bombed. Its storyline and satire seems very-aimed towards Gen Zers and committed to social media, live streaming and content makers. Its location was a typical, non-descript "Hollywood", L. A. mansion guessing to set the storyline in a place of celebrity worship.

All characters are just so vapid, that each when killed off - makes viewers feel apathetic with every gore, ultraviolent scene. Its gore effects are a combination of CGI, probably AI with some practical effects. It offers nothing new and plays like "Johnny-come-lately" to the idea of "slasher" genre and social media. Even late Y2K-era Reality TV-inspired and primal ether-streaming era "Halloween Resurrection" (2002) featured TV-iconic Tyra Banks and rapper, Busta Rhymes seems avant garde (pre-social media culture) compared to this. Maybe with the participation of Jackson, the director could have its narrative involved an strong Hip Hop cultural element.

Most of the theatrical releases are connected with Fathom ticketing. This expensive service tends to give these baseless intros with actors or the director. Or if one's lucky a "behind-the-scene" segment is inserted after the film end credits.

I say... unless you aren't into the "influencer" subculture (or an avid fan of 50 Cent) and not a clueless Gen Zer, maybe avoid this flick. Wishing I could say that this film is "so bad that it's good!" but it's not. It offers plot twists but these only work with some decent acting chops, none here.

Supposedly some of the killed off cast members are known popular content makers like Bruce Hall but none that I "really" recognize even follow (ol' skooler here). The only strong actor in this entire film, is the occasional TV actor, Neal McDonough! He helmed the role of a questionable police officer and often remembered from comedic appearances in TV shows like the late 90s "Just Shoot Me".

In the end, the storyline seemed to be lost in between trying to be a Black comedy or "Meta" or "Slasher" genre Horror. Hopefully, some viewers will find this entry as entertaining material but unfortunately upon observing its film reviews reveal it's actual merit.

  • Sketch: Darkchilde of the Black Marker

This 2024 film by Seth Worley, was inspired by his short film, "Dark Colors". This is a surprisingly entertaining film. It seems to be by it's marketing to young moviegoers, but it has a darker set up. Advertised as a comedy fantasy, it's more of a black comedy arched more to horror.

The premise is about a family in mourning, a father and two children. One child, "Amber" who is a reclusive and very artistic youth, who gets bullied. Her anger is driven out onto paper as sketches. This is where the film is oddly for young viewers, images of imagined violence with monsters and their special abilities.

The other child, discovered a "magical" magic pond near their home. It has special water, and does wondrous as well as horrible things. Then Amber's angered sketching begins to take form.

I feel what makes this film a tad terrifying, is the sound effects. This film may drag with its story, but the visual effects are superb along with monster creations.

As far as the cast Tom Hale plays the widow parent, "Taylor Wyatt" and along with the strong lead by young actor, Bianca Belle as "Amber". The director calls it a mix of "Jurassic Park" and "Inside Out" but it feels more like "Goonies" meet "It: Chapter One" kids!

Lastly, the film's overall effects are pretty mesmerizing as a youth led cast steer the sequences, giving off more serious tense scenes (look out for the school bus segment).

As silly and infantile "Amber's" monsters appear, Worley's orchestrated scenes (not depending on gore effects or jump scares) really evolve them into menacing entities . Its soundtrack and sound effects, help to deliver some terrifying seconds with the monsters. In some ways echoes Joe Dante's 80s segment with cartoon-like monsters from "Twilight Zone, The Movie".

  • Put Her Back: A Look at Possession

Phillipou's brothers sophomore feature, "Bring Her Back" is not a sequel to their first full-length movie, "Talk to Me" (2023). This film loses its strength in the third act, if the brothers were leaning towards a slow burner, Folk Horror-like vibes - so there wasn't a need for shock value.

Sally Hawkins's acting chops themselves keep the story together making her absurd character believable. Hawkins's helming of Laura, as this innocent foster parent, who delves with the supernatural. Her central character is met with two other characters: Andy and Piper (brother with a visual-impaired sister).

After an unexpected parent's death, they find themselves with foster homing, enter Laura. Laura in the first and second acts, is about gaining trust and pure manipulation. Their interaction or banter is good and effective for this film's drama.

Underneath these dramatic scenes, something unnatural, sinister is developing with another foster child, Ollie. The brothers' direction is known for ultra violence and drug abuse as with the first film but here it's about emotional abuse.

Hawkins's character arc, becomes quite sinister but met with humanism. It demonstrates Hawkins as such a gifted, versatile actor. That's why gore isn't need like for shock value, it diminishes Hawkins's work.

It's third act, is where the illusion loses strength and loss of creepiness. Instead it goes for unnecessary gore effects becoming just violence without emotional value. This film could have gone into a great climax with a twist. It's soundtrack quite fun, comes off as party music for college students. It's tracks usually playing behind Laura's scenes, it's like that's the only type of music she listens to (also used to cover sinister sounds like screaming, etc.).

This film is not a bad one, just a little sorted. "Bring Her Back", as film is held together due to Hawkins's genius. It feels sorted, a crisis to be horror or just genre filmmaking - but it's worth a look.
