I had heard good things about this 2015 TV series and its rather high IMDb rating. I found that my public library has a set of DVDs for season one so we popped in disc #1 and settled in.
I am not certain why the show is called "Dark Matter" but I speculate it is because in modern Astrophysics there has been lots of talk recently about the majority of the universe being dark matter, stuff that is influencing the motions of stars and galaxies but thus far not detected by human means. In other words, a "hook" that isn't directly related to the storyline.
The series starts with a large ship traveling through space, one by one six people begin to wake up but have no memory of who they are, where they are, or why they are in this spaceship. Part of the mystery is explained by a female android that happens to also be there.
Half-way through the second episode my wife got up and walked away, "I can't take this anymore." I finished the second episode then continued to watch the third, as the first three are all on disc #1.
Here is why my wife left and why I will likely watch no more past episode #3. There is nothing novel about the story other than it is set several centuries in the future. It involves a planet that has a precious mineral to mine (shades of 'Dune') and two or three large corporations at odds with each other. The workers on the planet get caught in the middle, their survival is in question.
The thing that really did it in for me was a conflict about half-way through episode #2, it became an extended scene of guns, guns, and more guns, people in a warehouse shooting and killing each other. Let me see, is this a novel idea, or is it one that has been used countess times in countless movies over the past 100 years or so? So we are expected to believe several centuries in the future adversaries are still using conventional guns?
A show with little or no creativity or imagination, just the 'idea' that the characters are in strange worlds traveled to using FTL travel. Using old tried and true themes.
My biggest puzzle, after watching the first three episodes is - "Why does it have such a high rating?" Mediocre at best.

In spite of the usual disclaimer at the end of the movie, "Any resemblance etc. Is entirely coincidental", this movie is in fact based on real people and real events.
The "Alto Knights SC" was a real Manhattan social club used by the Genovese crime family, where mobsters would meet and conduct business.
The movie is inspired by the true story of the rivalry between Frank Costello and Vito Genovese-big names in organized crime in New York City in the mid-20th century. Robert DeNiro plays both characters, the nose prosthetics and unique costuming and makeup for each makes it easy to tell them apart.
Frank and Vito grew up together, kids in the street. Both had served prison time for different reasons. When this movie starts in 1957 Vito was just getting back into the family business and the story portrays a growing rivalry and clashes between the two men and the goons who worked for each one.
The movie is well cast and the story interesting. To me it is a bit too long at just over two hours, and some scenes go on a bit too long. But overall my wife and I enjoyed the viewing, as a reminder of what was going on in the NY area crime scene at the time when we were just growing up in the South.
It was also nice getting to see many great-looking cars from the 1950s, that too brought back good memories of my sister's 1956 Ford.

IMDb page doesn't specify where it was filmed but in one street scene we see the sign for "Quinn Podiatry" and that is in Pearl River, NY, just near the NY/NJ state line. And, I suppose, in other smaller communities in NJ and NY just upstream from New York city.
The cast contain a number of good, experienced actors and each creates an interesting character. The story revolves around Edie Falco as Wanda. She works as a bookkeeper for several small businesses in her area.
She has a pregnant daughter who is planning her wedding. She has a young adult son who never seems to be on a good track in life. Trouble seems to follow him.
She also has an ex-husband who, with his new family, may not be able to pay half of their daughter's wedding. Plus she is being pursued romantically by two different people, a man and a woman.
