Suzanne Somers, Star of ‘Three’s Company’ and ‘She’s the Sheriff,’ Dies at 76

Suzanne Somers, the Emmy nominee and star of hit shows like Three’s Company and Step by Step, died Sunday. She was 76.

Somers died peacefully of breast cancer at her home in Palm Springs, her longtime publicist, R. Couri Hay, announced.

“She survived an aggressive form of breast cancer for over 23 years. Suzanne was surrounded by her loving husband, Alan, her son, Bruce, and her immediate family,” the statement read. “Her family was gathered to celebrate her 77th birthday on Oct. 16th. Instead, they will celebrate her extraordinary life, and they want to thank her millions of fans and followers who loved her dearly.”

The actress also was known for her roles on She’s the Sheriff and Serial Mom.

Born in San Bruno, California, on Oct. 16, 1946, Suzanne Marie Mahoney was the third of four children in an Irish-American Catholic family. Her father, Frank, was a laborer, and her mother, Marion, a medical secretary.

Who would have thought we would be seeing a sequel to 47 Ronin among all of the Halloween goodies? But sure enough, Universal 1440 Entertainment, the company’s direct-to-video department, has come up with Blade of the 47 Ronin, a modern-day sequel to the Keanu Reeves samurai epic. And they said there’s no such thing as The Great Pumpkin.

Somewhere in Budapest Yurei kills Arai thought to be the last in the bloodline of those who wielded the Blade of the 47 Ronin. But as he kills him he senses the existence of another heir.

13th Annual Cinema St. Louis QFest Runs Virtually From June 19-28 to Help Celebrate Pride Month

To help celebrate Pride Month, the 13th Annual QFest St. Louis — presented by Cinema St. Louis (Csl) — will take place from June 19-28. Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, Csl will offer all programs virtually, protecting the health of patrons. Programs can be streamed at any time during the festival’s dates. Recorded and live introductions and Q&As will be available for most film programs.

The St. Louis-based Lgbtq film festival, QFest will present a record number of 40 films. The participating filmmakers represent a wide variety of voices in contemporary queer world cinema. The mission of the film festival is to use the art of contemporary gay cinema to spotlight the lives of Lgbtq people and to celebrate queer culture.

Exclusive: Executive producer John Legend and writer-director John Swetnam (Step Up All In and Into the Storm ) have teamed with DanceOn, the multi-channel YouTube network co-founded by Madonna, on a unique casting call for the upcoming dance pic Breaking Through. Dancers will be selected from submissions to the DanceOn site to either perform at a live taped event this month or have their videos appear in the internet generation coming-of-age drama starring Sophia Aguiar and Jordan Rodrigues.

The casting call is the first initiative in the filmmakers’ partnership with DanceOn, a YouTube network created as online community for dancers and dance lovers. Exclusive: Voltage Pictures has added another title to its Cannes war chest, taking international rights to the coming-of-age dance film Breaking Through. Paradigm represents North America.

Step Up: All In writer John Swetnam, whose credits include Warner Bros summer release Into The Storm, will direct from his own screenplay and produces.

Breaking Through centres on Casey Wright, a 21-year-old small town girl with dreams of stardom and celebrity.

When she becomes an overnight sensation after a Hollywood talent scout spots her hip-hop dance videos online, Casey’s popularity takes off and she is forced to reassess what matters most in life.

Breaking Through is described as being in the vein of Step Up and Save The Last Dance and in the words of people close to the project, “bridges the gap between film, music, dance and the internet.”
