This debut film tries to cover 100 years of German history and somehow pulls it off - it's part crime story, part time-jumping drama and it actually works pretty well. Yeah it gets messy with all the different visual styles and jumps between eras, but that's kind of the point - it's refreshing to see a German film take some real risks. Not perfect but definitely ambitious, and the East German setting feels authentic - can see why it won at Max Ophüls. The 2+ hour runtime might feel long at times, but if you're into films that actually try something different instead of playing it safe, this one's worth checking out.
