Tina Fey and Charlie Brooker have joined what is gearing up to be a seriously splashy 50th edition of the Edinburgh TV Festival.

Comedy icon Fey, star of 30 Rock and the creator of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and The Four Seasons, will chat with Irish TV Host Graham Norton on stage on the final day of the fest, which takes place next month. “Fey brings her distinct charm, wit and insight to this lively conversation with beloved broadcaster Graham Norton,” Edinburgh said.

She joins a tranche of new speakers that include Black Mirror creator Brooker and UK super producer Stephen Lambert, whose credits include The Traitors, Gogglebox and Undercover Boss.

Meanwhile, the alternative MacTaggart will be delivered by comedian, writer and actor Munya Chawawa, who will “make the case for why broadcasters underestimate digital creatives at their peril, and will issue a call to arms for creative risk.”

The producers behind Last One Laughing UK have located what they hope will be the next big British format.

Banijay labels Initial and Zeppotron are developing a version of Dutch format Let’s Play Ball, which broke out on YouTube with more than 1 million views and will soon launch on SBS6 in the Netherlands.

The format sees two rival teams of comedians go head-to-head in a race to transport a gigantic ball across various terrains. Facing physical puzzles along the way, each episode will see the teams navigate varied landscapes, from narrow city streets to rivers and countryside meadows.

Season 4 has averaged 4.4M viewers so far this year, according to official seven-day viewing figures from Barb and overnights.tv.

This puts it just a shade ahead of Season 3 over the same number of episodes.

Netflix is tapping into its thousands and thousands of niche sub-genres with a podcast in which comedians pitch movie ideas to host Jimmy Carr. In The Big Pitch with Jimmy Carr, guests will come up with ideas to fit one of Netflix’s most 27,000 obscure sub-genres, which range from “Steamy Crime Movies from the 1970s'” to “Australian Dysfunctional Family Comedies Starring A Strong Female Lead.” Joining Carr will be Nick Mohammed, Phil Wang, Romesh Ranganathan, Ahir Shah, Kerry Godliman, Michelle Wolf, London Hughes, Chris McCausland, Jamali Maddix and Asim Chaudhry. Hit UK Prime Video comedy format Last One Laughing has landed a second season in the UK.

The latest version of the Japanese format that has performed well in numerous countries including South Africa, Australia and Ireland where it is hosted by Trevor Noah, Rebel Wilson and Graham Norton respectively will launch next year on Amazon’s streamer worldwide.

In Last One Laughing UK, a group of comedians gather together to make each other laugh and are eliminated if they chuckle.

A Season 2 greenlight for Last One Laughing is unsurprising given the show has been rating well, is cheap to make and has landed some serious viral moments. The new set of comedians will be announced in due course.
