[4.6] Peaks on the horizon

A mini fantasy drama like a draft and sketch of 'Lord of the Moose'. It is entertaining and enthralling if you have nothing else to watch. The set design, costumes and visual effects were good to decent, while the storyline, script and flow were subpar.

If you would like to watch fantasy revolt movie, LOTR and The Hobbit are much better choices.

Good for the budget

Before I go any further, it is worth mentioning that apparently this had a budget of only £300. If that is correct then for the budget, it's an ok film.

However, the story line is very slow and it jumps to much. From the off it is very confusing and doesn't grip you. The acting is very subpar and the visuals are not appealing.

Billy Boyd does a good job in his role and if I am honest, he was my only draw to giving Warlord a chance.

A very disappointing film that somehow won some awards and had several nominations. If the budget had been much higher then this could have been an outstanding film, sadly it isn't.

I have given this 5 out of 10 due to the low budget.

I enjoyed the film

I enjoyed the depiction of Elves and their philosophies, as well as the narrative had some surprises. The sets were also very nice, and it had a great tone. They had to shoot around their budget, so if you are looking for expensive and grand set pieces you won't find them here. If you enjoy Dungeons and Dragons it is better than many offerings. I recommend for fantasy fans.

I myself liked the acting, especially the Sheriff and Elven characters. The music suited the story well, but I would have preferred a more traditional orchestral sound.

This is a film that really wants a sequel and I hope we see one.

90 Minutes of Fantasy Done Right

Honestly, Warlord was way better than I expected. The story grabs you early and doesn't let go-no pointless filler, just solid pacing and a plot that actually flows. I was hooked the whole way through.

Billy Boyd kills it as the Sheriff. Seeing him go full dark side was weirdly satisfying. He's terrifying without ever going over the top. Ryan Gage's performance was also great, and the supporting cast (especially the elves) brought a lot of weight to the story.

Visually, it looks amazing. The costume design deserves a shout. Detailed, gritty, and totally believable. It made the world feel lived-in and real. The forest setting, the armor, the face paint. It all looked spot on without trying too hard.

Yeah it's not a mega-budget blockbuster, but it doesn't need to be. It's a tight, well-acted fantasy flick with heart, style, and a bit of bite. Definitely worth a watch.

this is worse than bad

Who is this made for? I watched the entire first 30 minutes and still have no clue what this is about. Fantasy movie only in name and costumes. All they do is talk. Boring as boring can be. If you have children be careful, there is a scene where a guy is running in the woods naked and his privates are clearly outlined as he prances around. Bizarre. He gets caqptured, castrated and tar and feathered by the elves. Adds nothing to the movie except more disgust and makes no sense. This is not a spoiler, there is nothing here to spoil. I think that is the main action scene in this bore fest.

Listen, I adore Lord of Rings, most fantasy tv shows, and cut them a lot of slack. I forgive much. I am a fantasy geek hardcore. But this thing is not a proper movie. Not even a proper play. Every high school play is better than this. Maybe it was crowd funded? I want my half hour back.

I did fast forward to make sure there were no later scenes to redeem it. But no, zero.

Gritty Elves v Humans

The atmosphere feels raw and real - that's what I felt all the way through. Eerily similar to our world, but fresh. You can tell a lot of passion went into every part of it. The characters are layered and interesting, and even without huge flashy scenes, the tension keeps building in a way that really grabs you.

It's just got a gritty style that makes everything feel more grounded and believable. You're always wondering what's going to happen next. Definitely one of those films that proves you don't need a massive budget to tell a gripping story. Action scenes are good, music is cool. Great group of actors. Just a really solid film.

Snorelord

What in the hell did I just watch? I'm sat stunned by the sheer audacity that people are responsible for churning this plate of utter crap out. I've no idea of what actually went on because it makes no sense. Nothing really happens. It's just a complete waste of time and effort.

I love a good fantasy film but this is fantasy for the wrong reason. They've obviously fantasised that anyone would be slightly interested in watching such drivel.

The acting is terrible. The settings are done in some park woodland. The script and story are just all over the place. This is just so bad on all levels. Charges should be brought against all those involved in it.

What were they thinking?

Did they really think this was good enough to make more than one of? The ending of this movie is setting it up for a second, but who will green light that? The big twist was kind of assanign. For the budget this thing probably had I will say they did a decent job with the set. But the acting and the pacing where slow and tedious. I can't believe I made it through the whole thing. I guess I was thinking it would get better, or I liked some of the class war messaging, but then it spits on all that. Anything that was good abot it was lost by the end of this low budget robinhood with elves movie./

Worse than...

Seriously, this has been rated 6.5!!??

Bad as acting, bad story line, bad filming bad scenes, bad bad bad... where is the minus button. Disjointed, not even artistic, I just can't believe this was even released...3 times I was soo close to turning it off, but I persevered in the interest of... maybe it'll pick up... but no... it didn't. You could tell the actors just wanted it to be over so they could go home and forget about this miserable assignment. Some major investments needed for any sequel, better screen writing, better actors better shooting, better everything ... worst thing is that I wasted 1.40min on this drivel... bad, bad, bad!

Naaah, not good

Right from the start this movie feels off, the acting is weird and over the top like the actors are trying too hard and nothing they say feels real. Everyone looks too perfect with heavy makeup that just does not fit in with the kind of story the movie is trying to tell. The clothes look cheap like they are made out of soft toy material and they are way too clean and new for a world that is supposed to be rough and dirty It all looks like a school play or something made for a small theater and not like a real movie. The backgrounds and lighting make everything look fake like it was filmed on a stage not in a real place Because of all this it is hard to take anything seriously or get into the story. The movie just does not work and feels like it was made fast and with not enough care. It is the kind of low budget movie that people will forget quickly and it is hard to find a reason to tell someone to watch it.

The Worst "Movie" Ive ever seen

What an absolute pile of "TRIPE" its not fit for a childrens tv programme let alone calling it a movie.....its shockingly bad!

The acting is ameture hour..the effects are 1970s.....still im sure there are worse to come. Sack the cast & crew start again this will rate as an all time "watching paint dry" thingy...who would ever even consider making such rubbish? Reading the comments i think alot of you need to get out more "i score this 1 only because there is no option of tripple zero....i cant get my time back! But i can leave an honest review! & thats what ive done! "its a silly film made with a budget of around £300 GBP.

Worse than B

This is the most pathetic example of art on every level! Acting? I'm not sure where they found these people, maybe this was a failed class project that found it's way into the market? Who paid for this? I'm sure I have some great investment opportunities for someone willing to throw away money! The story line makes no sense! Sounds like the actors are making up their lines on the fly! I'm writing this more for the people involved in making this and hope they read my opinion! Look for another line of work, each and every one of you! If you're sitting around with nothing to watch, skip over this and keep looking!

Wooden tops

I have seen some B movies and some C moves, this film is slow never really gets going acting and dialog are slow! The two seconds rule has not been applied so you have great long Scene's from one camera.

A second camera would have been useful or just shoot the scene twice! Disappointing!

The middle distance looks from the actors, just make the actors look board and the film boaring. It should have had 40 minutes taken out. I got the impression that there was no enthusiasm even the Sheriff was over acted, mainly because everyone else was under acting. The wardrobe was out of a pantomime, I sure I could hear someone shouting "behind you" in at least one scene.

I couldn't even carry on watching it

I was so excited when I seen this as I love this whole style of movie but jeeeez was I let down. The acting was so bad like you could see them trying too hard. It was like watching an acting class! The costumes were awful like they was also made in this acting class.

I couldn't even carry on watching it I had to turn it off

Everything about it just looked and felt awful.

I highly reccomend that you don't waste your time trying to watch this as you will be very disappointed

Even the views from the camera feel off. I had to check that I hadn't made a mistake and that this film was made years ago.

Such a good movie

Absolutely loved this movie, so so good. Acting was great, storyline was complex but paid off so well at the end. That final climax was brilliant. Costumes are cool and the world building is great. Also, the music is epic. Worth a watch.

Would liked to have seen more of the elves, but that's kind of the point of the film in some ways. Billy Boyd is great and I really liked Axle. All the elf stuff is really good. Their weapons are cool, could definitely have done more with that. But this is an indie fantasy movie, huge kudos for tackling it and delivering. We need more films like this. My take away is if you like fantasy, this is for you.

I made an account just to leave this review

This movie sucks

From the first shot it's obvious that Stuart Brennan, the director, wanted to write and star in this movie he wrote for himself. The whole thing feels like an exercise in self gratification.

Everything is poorly executed. The costumes are cheap, the sets are ridiculous. The lighting is wrong. The acting is atrocious from everyone. It feels like I'm watching a student short film that went too long.

We thought it was a comedy in the first 10 mins as it was so bad it was funny. But it just got worse and it became very obvious that this movie took itself seriously.

I hated it so much I made an IMBD account to leave this review.

All The Tripe You Need

The Good News: The cinematography and acting are decent. Too bad you don't see a fantasy movie for the acting.

The plot is boringly xenophobic and the usual anti-authority: The elves and humans don't get along, with the humans holding all of the cards and the elves being exiled to the woods. The sheriff is right from the Stock Evil collection: He's running roughshod over the local population while forcefully taking control of the bakeries and forcing others into the mines.

In other words, nothing you really haven't seen before. Adding to the fun is the usual over-the-top violence.

Then there's the ending, which isn't exactly your feel-good ending, which comes from nowhere. It's nice that the bad guys get punished, but only by making the chasm between elves and humans even deeper. It's the sole surprise in the movie.

All told, there is a surprise ending to the movie, but it's unlikely most people would last past the first twenty minutes. There's a lot of scenery chewing, but it doesn't really add to the movie and most of it has no payoff. You can miss this movie with little worry of missing anything important.

loved this movie

Warlord is one of those movies that really pulls you in and doesn't let go. The story feels fresh but familiar in the best way, and the world-building is seriously impressive. I especially liked the use of magic, not too much, but just enough.

The performances are strong across the board, and the visuals have this gritty, lived-in feel that makes everything more real.

The pacing is tight too - it always feels like something important is about to happen, and you're just glued to it. You can tell a lot of care went into every part of it, from the costumes to the music. Definitely worth checking out if you like smart, grounded fantasy.

If you're expecting some Spiderman action, this is obviously an indie and you can see they worked with what they had. Which they did really well.

One star for effort. No stars for execution.

Rarely does a film manage to unite its audience in pure, unfiltered confusion. Warlord (2025), an indie fantasy attempt that somehow made it past the editing room and into distribution, is one such film. With a runtime of just over 100 minutes, it feels like an endurance test-like a cursed VHS tape from a medieval garage sale that demands to be watched, and then punishes you for obeying.

The plot-or what barely qualifies as one-follows a nameless "hero" navigating through a woodland realm where everyone mumbles cryptic lines like "the forest remembers" and "destiny is forged in the flame of loss." If that sounds poetic, trust me: it's not. Delivered with the emotional depth of a voicemail apology, these lines might have held weight in a better film, with better actors, better lighting, and literally any sense of urgency.

Let's talk about those performances. The lead actor seems trapped in a permanent state of either boredom or gastrointestinal discomfort. He walks from scene to scene with the charisma of damp cardboard, occasionally whispering lines like he's afraid to wake a baby sleeping off-screen. Supporting characters offer no relief-especially the so-called villain, who performs every line like he's reading it off a cereal box. The elf queen (yes, there's an elf queen) appears to have learned her lines phonetically, pausing at random mid-sentence, blinking directly at the camera as if silently pleading for help.

Visually, Warlord is a curious beast. Most of the movie seems to be shot in the same stretch of public park, sometimes with visible hikers in the background. The camera work is shaky and inconsistent-some scenes are inexplicably blurry, others are lit like a horror film, despite being emotional farewell moments. There are attempts at action, sure, but they're sluggish, poorly choreographed, and punctuated with laughable CGI. One fight sequence appears to use sound effects from a free mobile app.

And then there are the costumes. Think Halloween store clearance bin meets Renaissance fair leftovers. Swords are clearly plastic, capes are fleece, and armor looks like it's made from painted cardboard. One character even wears what appears to be a motorcycle jacket spray-painted silver. It's less "epic fantasy" and more "LARP group that got lost on the way to the tavern."

Let's not forget the pacing, which is nothing short of glacial. Entire scenes are dedicated to people walking. And walking. And pausing dramatically. Then more walking. There are long, lingering shots of trees, faces, and boots. These aren't stylistic choices; they're filler. The editor clearly had a hard time stretching this film to feature length-and boy, does it show.

Even the music, which could have saved a few scenes, feels generic and misplaced. One moment you're hearing a medieval lute track, and the next, it's a synth drone straight out of a 1980s thriller. It's jarring and, frankly, hilarious.

To its slight credit, there's something almost admirable in how Warlord sticks to its vision, no matter how broken that vision may be. This isn't a cash grab-it's a genuine effort, just painfully misguided. You can feel that the filmmakers really tried, but no amount of enthusiasm can replace basic cinematic competence.

In the end, Warlord is a masterclass in how not to make a fantasy film. It's slow, it's awkward, it's unintentionally funny-but never intentionally entertaining. It's a movie that dares you to keep watching, then punishes you when you do. Perfect for bad movie nights, fantasy satire lovers, or anyone who enjoys watching creative ambition crash and burn in slow motion.

MASSIVE DISAPOINTMENT

Massive Disappointment - A Waste of Time and Potential

I rarely leave reviews, but The Warlord was such a colossal letdown I had to speak up. The plot is painfully predictable, the characters are flat and forgettable, and the pacing drags like a bad student presentation. The film tries to act serious but ends up feeling unintentionally ridiculous. Dialogue? Wooden. Acting? Uninspired. It's as if no one cared-not the director, not the editor, not even the cast. I expected epic, I got empty. One of the most forgettable films I've seen in years. A complete waste of time and potential. Avoid it unless you're looking for a masterclass in disappointment.

He can't keep getting away with it!

How does this guy keep getting money to make these awful movies and even star in it?

I feel sorry for all the talented people he dragged into this.

Warlord (2025) comes across as a low rent fantasy, unoriginal sequence of genre tropes dressed in bargain bin aesthetics. Dialogue is wooden, plot predictable, and visuals underwhelming. Beyond mere passability, it struggles to leave any meaningful mark, feeling more like a vanity showcase than a crafted effort. Even if you're a casual fantasy fan, don't expect depth, polish, or originality.

If you expect to have fun with a fantasy adventure with memorable characters and interesting visuals, stay way from this boring mess.
