The Kaiju Blockbuster That Roger Ebert Called “Godzilla Meets Blair Witch” Has a New Streaming Home
Image
Those who lived through the year 2008 would remember it for landmark hits such as The Dark Knight and Iron Man. They might even remember Slumdog Millionaire’s excellent run, or boast about watching Breaking Bad on AMC before it blew up. But the year 2008 is notable for another reason; it was when film marketing was changed forever by one film: the super-secretive monster movie Cloverfied. Released in January on the back of nothing but a trailer that went viral before the concept of virality had even been properly established, Cloverfield emerged as a box office hit and spawned a handful of sequels. It will soon be made available to stream on Paramount+.

How To Watch The Planet Of The Apes Movies In Order
Image
One of the most enduring and surprisingly prolific science fiction film franchises is "Planet of the Apes," loosely based on the 1963 novel by French author Pierre Boulle. Adapted by sci-fi genre pioneer Rod Serling in 1968, the success of the original movie led to four direct sequels and a television series spin-off. Since then, the franchise has been rebooted multiple times, maintaining the core premise of an Earth ruled by intelligent apes, retooled for contemporary sensibilities. And through all of its iterations, the franchise has boasted high-concept sci-fi storytelling, along with groundbreaking makeup and visual effects to bring its wild world to life.

Given the sprawling extent of the series and its numerous continuities, first-time viewers could use a primer on how to approach the franchise. There are different ways one could watch all the "Planet of the Apes" movies, including in release order. But for those looking for an ideal...

Barred From Release in the Country It’s Set, This Jordan Peele-Backed 89% Rt Action Hit Finds Redemption on Streaming
Image
Maverick filmmaker Jordan Peele was reportedly quite upset about not being able to bag the rights to director Zach Cregger's Weapons, when the script inspired a feeding frenzy in Hollywood. New Line Pictures was said to have outbid Peele's Monkeypaw Productions by $7 million. Weapons has validated all the attention it was getting prior to production with its stupendous reviews and phenomenal box office performance so far. Peele might've lost that one, but Weapons was always going to be made, with or without him. His intervention, however, was pivotal to the release of Dev Patel's debut film, Monkey Man, which was abandoned by Netflix and remains unreleased in the country it's set in.

Image
One Planet of the Apes movie has surged on Prime Video. The sci-fi drama franchise originated in 1968 and has launched several installments. However, while Planet of the Apes garnered praise, early sequels were less successful in comparison. Having remained part of popular culture, a new film series revolving around Caesar (portrayed by Andy Serkis) premiered in 2011.

The Planet of the Apes reboot has compelled audiences since debuting, featuring impressive visual effects and action sequences. The various entries have also become major critical and commercial hits. The first movie, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, earned more than $481 million globally and amassed a large fanbase.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes were subsequently released. Both movies were directed by Matt Reeves and set box office highs for the franchise, generating over $710 million and $490 million, respectively.

Planet Of The Apes Reboot Series Dominates Streaming Charts – Where To Watch All Four Films In India ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

With a combined worldwide gross of over $2.5 billion, Planet of the Apes is the longest-running American science fiction film series in the history of cinema. It began with the 1968 film, followed by four sequels in the early 1970s. The franchise was revived with Tim Burton’s 2001 version and later got a fresh lease of life with four more films released between 2011 and 2024.

Matt Reeves Did Killmonger Better Than Black Panther in 11-Year-Old Movie That’s Dominating Streaming
Image
While Dawn of the Planet of the Apes currently climbs the HBO streaming charts (FlixPatrol), one cannot help but notice the degree of similarity the main antagonist, Koba, has with Black Panther‘s Killmonger. Though one did not directly inspire the other, the parallels between the two villains are far too numerous to ignore, making one revisit Reeves’s film in a new light.

This is not the first time a comparison has been drawn between the two movie villains, and yet, the fans are not only divided between their character arcs and storylines, but also convinced that Koba exists as a more ruthless and elevated alternative to the Marvel villain. And there is more than ample cause to prove and support that theory, too.

James Gunn Names the Pop Movie Trilogy Everyone’s Sleeping On: “Most Underrated Pop Films of All”
Image
James Gunn recently sat down for an interview with the French outlet Konbini, and during the conversation, he opened up about the movies that have inspired him over the years. He talked about his all-time favorite films, some recent ones he loves, and what’s influenced his new Superman movie.

While Gunn said he’s always changing his personal rankings, one thing he seemed sure about was that the Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy doesn’t get the credit it deserves.

“I like all these Planet of the Apes movies,” Gunn said. “The new Planet of the Apes movies, most underrated like pop films of all. Especially the first one and then the Matt Reeves’ two movies.”

The trilogy started with Rise of the Planet of the Apes in 2011, directed by Rupert Wyatt, and continued with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) and War for the Planet of the Apes...

During the chat, he shared his thoughts on movies that have stuck with him, his all-time favorites, and some that don’t get the recognition they deserve. One trilogy, in particular, stood out to him as seriously underrated.

Gunn revealed that he believes the Planet of the Apes trilogy, especially the recent reboot series, doesn’t get enough credit for how good it really is. He said, “I like all these Planet of the Apes movies. The new Planet of the Apes movies, most underrated like pop films of all. Especially the first one and then Matt Reeves’ two movies.”

The Batman Director Made His Debut With A Forgotten Rom-Com Featuring A Friends Star
Image
In 2022, Matt Reeves introduced us to "The Batman," another take on the titular hero that saw Robert Pattinson in the lead role. Battinson operated within a noirish, "Seven"-adjacent industrial decay-ridden Gotham, representing a much younger version of the character in a movie that successfully reinvented the Dark Knight for modern movie goers following Christopher Nolan's seminal Dark Knight trilogy. Reeves was given significant creative freedom to bring his vision to life, something he'll apparently retain with the long delayed "The Batman: Part 2," if it ever sees the light of day.

"The Batman" was big for Reeves. He'd broken through with 2008's "Cloverfield," capturing the spirit of a bygone world in chaos, before proving he was more than capable of handling the sci-fi action genre with 2014's "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" and 2017's "War for the Planet of the Apes." But "The Batman" seemed to firmly...

When Matt Reeves Nearly Turned Down The Batman Because He Couldn’t Let Go Of This Movie: “I Was So Busy With…”
Image
Did Matt Reeves Nearly Miss Out On The Batman? (Photo Credit – Prime Video/X)

Matt Reeves almost bailed on The Batman. Yes, that’s a true story. The man who gave us the gritty, brooding Gotham with Robert Pattinson under the cowl wasn’t exactly jumping at the chance. When Warner Bros. called him in early 2017, he almost didn’t pick up. The reason? Because he was neck-deep in War for the Planet of the Apes, and turning his head toward Gotham felt like juggling chainsaws blindfolded.

The “Batfan” In Him Convinced Matt Reeves To Take Up Batman

Reeves wasn’t just making a film. He was finishing an epic trilogy. He was living and breathing apes, editing around the clock. “While I was in the process of finishing my directing work on War for the Planet of Apes, Warner Bros. contacted my agent in January of 2017 about the possibility...

Hollywood movie franchises, and the death of endings
Image
Hollywood movie franchises seem to have lost the ability to end. As Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning lands in cinemas, James Harvey has a few thoughts…

Spoilers for John Wick: Chapter 4 and No Time To Die lie ahead.

When was the last time you saw the end of a film series? Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, in cinemas this week, has been billed as that most elusive of modern movie phenomena: a last outing. Forgive me if I’ve heard this one before.

Mad About the Boy was marketed as the last Bridget Jones movie earlier this year – until star Renée Zellweger said maybe it wasn’t. John Wick: Chapter 4 (spoiler alert) ended with the title character’s funeral – Chapter 5 entered development last month.

One of the few franchises to offer an unambiguous end point to its hero’s journey did so, apparently, completely by accident: No Time To Die...

What Does the ‘Planet of the Apes’ Franchise Have to Do to Win a VFX Oscar?
Image
The excellent work on “Dune: Part Two” claimed the VFX Oscar on Sunday, while also leaving a lingering question of why the movies in the rebooted “Planet of the Apes” franchise have also been consistently outstanding but are still overlooked come final voting for the category’s Academy Award.

Since Wes Ball’s “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” opened last spring, it was widely considered an Oscar frontrunner among VFX practitioners, and its nomination was pretty much viewed as a no brainer. Then last month, the film, with work led by VFX supervisor Erik Winquist and Weta FX, won the top Visual Effects Society Award for outstanding VFX in a photoreal feature, besting titles including the Dune sequel (which did win three trophies that evening).

This isn’t the first time the Apes franchise has had this result. The Visual Effects Society additionally gave its most coveted prize...

Speaking to Collider, Ball confirmed that work was currently being done on the sequel, which was recently announced to be coming to theaters in 2027. While he didn't reveal plot details regarding the sequel, he shared his excitement about the many ideas he has about expanding the franchise moving forward.

"Yeah, we're talking about it. That's all I can say, really. But I'm greedy," Ball said. "I've got multiple things that I'm playing with right now. I'd love to do all of them, but there are so many cool...

‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ Reached New Heights for VFX and Performance Capture | How I Did It
Image
There’s a lot of pressure involved in trying to follow a trilogy as acclaimed and accomplished as the Andy Serkis-led “Planet of the Apes” saga, which culminated with 2017’s “War for the Planet of the Apes.” For “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” director Wes Ball, actor Owen Teague, animation supervisor Paul Story and visual effects supervisor Erik Winquist, making their blockbuster sequel involved a lot of both looking behind and ahead of them as they pushed the visual effects of the franchise even further.

“The challenge with this movie was that we both had to give people what they were expecting, but also surprise them,” Ball told TheWrap for a new installment of How I Did It, presented by 20th Century Studios. “We’re standing on what’s done before and elevating [it] into a level that wasn’t possible a couple years ago.”

The starting point for Winquist,...

‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,’ ‘Dune: Part Two’ Top Visual Effects Society Awards
Image
“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” won Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature, the top feature prize at the 23rd Annual Visual Effects Society Awards and the one that most closely corresponds to the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. The celebration of achievement in visual effects took place on Tuesday in Los Angeles.

The sci-fi primate sequel beat “Dune: Part Two,” which went into the evening with the most nominations (seven) and emerged with the most wins (four): Outstanding Achievement in a Photoreal Feature, Outstanding CG Cinematography, Outstanding Effects Simulations in a Photoreal Feature and Outstanding Compositing & Lighting in a Feature.

The victory for “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” does not necessarily make the film a frontrunner in the Oscars’ visual-effects race. Over the 22 years of Ves Awards, the winner went on to receive the Oscar 12 times, but the two groups have only matched three times in the last 10 years.

Ves Awards: ‘Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes’ Takes Top Film Prize As ‘Dune: Part Two’ & ‘Wild Robot’ Lead With Four Each; ‘Shōgun’ & ‘Penguin’ Pace TV – Full List
Image
It was a rather curious night at the 23rd Ves Awards, which were handed out Tuesday at the Beverly Hilton.

The Visual Effects Society knelt before The Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, handing it the marquee prize for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature — but it was the lone win on six nominations for the 10th film in the venerable franchise.

The bigger winners with four apiece were Dune: Part Two, which came into the night with a leading seven nominations, and The Wild Robot, hot off dominating the Annie Awards over the weekend.

That raises a question: Which film has the inside track for the Oscar next month?

Well, the Ves Awards and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences haven’t followed the same script much during the past decade-plus, with only five of the Visual Effects Society’s marquee winners since 2013 going on to score the FX Oscar.

Will ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ Give Franchise Its First VFX Oscar?
Image
Spectacle has been essential to keeping moviegoing alive and pushing filmmaking forward, and the impact of VFX on the industry cannot be overstated. As major studios look for more avenues to entice audiences into theaters in this rapidly shifting world of technology, in which almost every form of entertainment is at our fingertips, the promise of breathtaking set pieces on the big screen remains one of the biggest selling points for audiences. Ideally, the best achievement in visual effects Oscar sets a bar in terms of what can be attained through technology, creativity, budget and audience investment.

As a result, the category differs from the others in that it suggests a measurable goal for productions to reach. If a blockbuster with dinosaurs can’t look at least as good as the industry-shifting visual effects on display in Jurassic Park (1993), then there’s still work to be done. Those same industry-shifting...

After ending its first season on a heart-thumping cliffhanger, "Severance" has returned to delve deeper into Lumon's dark web of conspiracies. While the latest season picks things up from the perspectives of the innies (who experience the unsettling aftermath of their revolt), episode 2 focuses on the outies, and how they are dealing with the incident that concluded season 1 of the show. While outie Dylan (Zach Cherry) struggles to get a new job due to his severed status, outie Irving (John Turturro) makes a covert payphone call while being tailed by outie Burt (Christopher Walken). Meanwhile, Helena Eagan (Britt Lower) is seen scrambling to salvage Lumon's tarnished reputation, which necessitates drastic administrative changes that feel more ominous than comforting.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes: Every Direct Callback to 1968's Original Film
Image
In 2024, the first Planet of the Apes movie in more than a half-decade was released as the start of a new era of the franchise at Disney. What is shaping up to be a new trilogy centered around a new story officially reignited the fan base with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Even though fans love to cling to the brilliance of the 2010s "Caesar Trilogy," which effectively explored the origins of a planet ruled by apes instead of humans, the most recent film presents an even more exciting direction for the franchise going forward.

With what feels like an inventive bridge between the past and future, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes looks to portray the world in a different era that gets a lot closer to the 1968 original than any contemporary entry. It certainly makes the upcoming sequels that much more tantalizing. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes...

This 13-Year-Old Sci-Fi Movie Had Everything To Be A Disaster But Ended Up Starting A $2.4 Billion Franchise
Image
By 2011, the Planet of the Apes series had already been around for over 40 years, but Rise of the Planet of the Apes completely revolutionized the franchise. The first Planet of the Apes movie was released in 1968 and mesmerized audiences all over the world. The ending of Planet of the Apes is still regarded as one of the best twists in movie history. After the success of the 1968 original, four more Planet of the Apes movies were made before the franchise was eventually rebooted in 2001.

The 2001 Planet of the Apes reboot was not received well by critics or audiences, and led to the franchise being deemed as dead once again for 10 years. Therefore, 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes had a lot of factors working against it. However, Rise's emotional story about Caesar quickly won over both critics and audiences, and has led to several more successful Planet of the Apes movies.

Steve Zahn Teases Emotional Off-Script Scenes in Silo Season 2
Image
In Apple TV+'s Silo, where most of the world's population has perished and the rest remain in an underground silo, most newcomers aren't exactly strangers. The exception is Steve Zahn's Solo, a reclusive man living in Silo 17 who Juliette meets on her journey outside Silo 18 in Season 2. Silo hasn't yet revealed much about Solo, keeping his storyline and importance to Juliette's journey a secret. But his one and only line in the official trailer is enough to show he's not a man to be crossed: "You try to open the door again, and I'm gonna kill you."

According to Zahn, Solo is very similar to another character of his that represented vulnerability: Bad Ape from War of the Planet of the Apes. That alone speaks volumes about the type of character Solo is, but Zahn also adds originality to Solo's character that people have never seen before. Talking to Cbr,...

Some Planet of the Apes endings challenge audiences with gut-punch revelations. Others leave audiences contemplating the cyclical nature of power and resistance. Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes Ending Secretly Told You What The Next Movie Is Going To Be About And Its So Exciting
Image
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes was one of the most ambitious entries in the series, but it also laid foundations for where the movies can go next. The original Planet of the Apes movie released in 1968 broke new ground for sci-fi as it introduced a primitive world run by apes, but the big reveal at the end of the first movie reframed the entire meaning behind the movies. As the series went on, it built on this incredible narrative, so rebooting the franchise in 2011 was always going to be a struggle.

In fact, when legendary movie director, Tim Burton tried to reboot the series just a decade earlier in 2001, the movie drew considerable comparison to the original and, despite a solid box office, the vision for a new franchise died before it could begin. But 2011s Rise of the Planet of the Apes created a reboot with a new direction.

Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes Sequel Is Continuing A Franchise Tradition That Helped Making Caesars Trilogy So Good
Image
With Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes getting a sequel, the story of Noa (Owen Teague) and Mae (Freya Allan) can continue, expanding Caesar's (Andy Serkis) universe and the Planet of the Apes timeline. Set many generations after Caesar's tragic demise, the Planet of the Apes continuation follows Noa as his journey forces him to challenge everything he thought he knew. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' ending saw Mae and Noa make choices that could change the future of the apes and humans, to play out in the sequel.

The release of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes was highly anticipated; yet despite the movie's 86% Rotten Tomatoes score, it fell short of the expectations that Caesar's trilogy set. With an impactful and beloved character like Caesar, it is hard to follow up with a story and characters that may not be as refined. However, the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes...

Getting those right was the first part, which weve done now. And so that idea is to be able to say, Okay, we know when the Avatar movies are coming. We know now about Predator.

Wes Ball (‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ director) describes the ‘bold’ swing of his 300-year time jump
Image
Director Wes Ball refers to “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” the latest installment in the re-energized franchise, as something of a “soft reboot.” As a fan of both the original 1968 film with Charlton Heston as well as the more recent trilogy helmed by Matt Reeves, Ball was careful to hold on to the goodwill that this story already possessed. His approach then was to start a new chapter in an unexplored time period of this apocalyptic story. “I started thinking about it as, is there a way to almost bridge those two worlds together where you could start that step,” he explains, “that march towards that Charlton Heston reality.” Watch the video interview above.

“Kingdom” is set some 300 years after the death of ape leader Caesar (Andy Serkis) in “War for the Planet of the Apes.” The primates have developed a full spoken language, robust cultures, and Caesar is simply a legend.
