Most-Viewed Music Documentaries: ‘Greatest Night In Pop’ Leads the Way for Netflix
Image
Concert films and music documentaries drove music revenue. That is just one key takeaway from the 2024 Year-End Music Report by entertainment data and insights company Luminate, which was published on Wednesday.

The fact that music docs mean business is evident from some insights in the report. “Concert films and music documentaries once again demonstrated their value to both streaming platforms, with Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney+ leading the charge to satiate consumer demand for the format, and music rights holders, who benefit from associated streaming surges and royalties,” the report highlighted.

Luminate’s Streaming Viewership tool highlighted the most-watched music documentaries across all major platforms in 2024, led by Netflix’s The Greatest Night in Pop, about the night in 1985 when the industry’s biggest stars came together to record “We Are the World.” Since making its debut in January 2024, it reached 1.27 billion minutes streamed (see chart), according to Luminate.

Netflix's Christmas Movie With 89% Rt Score Becomes No. 1 Movie As The Holiday Begins
Image
Netflix's new Christmas movie with an 89% Rotten Tomatoes score becomes the streaming service's No. 1 movie as the holiday season begins. Netflix has been producing original Christmas movies since 2017, starting with A Christmas Prince. Since then, the streaming service has solidified its reputation as a go-to platform for holiday films with titles like The Princess Switch starring Vanessa Hudgens, The Christmas Chronicles starring Kurt Russell, and Klaus, an Oscar-nominated animated movie, exemplifying the diversity of Netflix's Christmas movie catalog.

In 2024, Netflix already had the holiday romantic comedy, Meet Me Next Christmas, top its Global Top 10 chart for the week of November 410 with over 18 million views. The holiday season is just beginning, so there should be plenty more Christmas movies appearing on Netflix's global chart before the year's end. This includes Netflix's new romantic comedy Christmas movie starring Lacey Chabert, a frequent star of Hallmark's Christmas movies, which has become the streaming service's new No.

Margot Robbie & Will Smith's $158M Crime Movie Becomes Netflix Global Hit 9 Years Later
Image
Margot Robbie and Will Smith's crime movie, which made over $158 million at the box office, becomes a global Netflix hit nine years later. Two of the biggest stars of their time, Smith rose to fame playing a fictionalized version of himself in the sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and transitioned to blockbuster movies during the 1990s, starring in Bad Boys, Men in Black, Independence Day, and more. He started garnering critical acclaim during the 2000s, earning Oscar nominations for Ali and The Pursuit of Happyness, though he didn't win the award until King Richard in 2022.

Similarly, Robbie started her career on television with Neighbours and Pan Am, but broke through with a standout role in Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street and collaborated with more acclaimed directors on Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Greta Gerwig's Barbie. Robbie received critical acclaim relatively early in her career,...

Home Movie Viewers Choose ‘The Wild Robot’ and ‘Hot Frosty’ Over ‘Megalopolis’ and ‘Emilia Pérez’
Image
On the heels of the response to “Joker: Folie à Deux” (Warner Bros.) on PVOD, “Megalopolis” (Lionsgate), Francis Ford Coppola’s much lower grossing but also much publicized $100 million self-financed film, got a home release that garnered almost zero interest.

“Saturday Night” (Sony) was the other big name release, and landed #6 on both iTunes (ranking by revenue) and Fandango (by transactions) top 10 lists (#4 and #6 respectively; it was #1 for a day at iTunes). It’s not like it was a much bigger hit than “Megalopolis” in theaters or PVOD. Its domestic gross was only $9.5 million, less than $2 million better than Coppola’s film.

“Megalopolis” not making either list is surprising. But what is stunning is it is nowhere to be found among the more than 80 movies listed on their daily list, nor has it since it was released. “Goodrich” (Bleecker Street) with Michael Keaton, which grossed barely over $1 million is #24 Monday.

Return of the King: The Fall and Rise of Elvis Presley Review – Resurrection of a Musical Legend
Image
Return of the King: The Fall and Rise of Elvis Presley is more than just another music documentary; it’s a comprehensive look at one of rock ‘n’ roll’s most crucial moments. The film, directed by Jason Hehir, the creator behind the acclaimed sports documentary The Last Dance, follows Elvis Presley’s spectacular career resurrection through the legendary 1968 Comeback Special.

By 1968, Elvis was a shadow of his former self. Hollywood had turned the rebellious rock superstar into a bland movie star, producing forgettable flicks in which he’d uncomfortably sing to animals and follow conventional scripts. Colonel Tom Parker, his manager, had gradually drained his once-revolutionary musical soul, leaving admirers wondering whether the real Elvis had vanished forever.

The documentary methodically follows Elvis’ journey from his childhood roots—listening to music outside Black churches in Mississippi—to his early success at Sun Records, his military service, and his Hollywood career.

8 Biggest Details Netflix's Elvis Documentary Leaves Out
Image
A brand-new Elvis Presley documentary, Return of the King: The Fall and Rise of Elvis Presley, is currently streaming on Netflix, but there are several things the movie leaves out about the King of Rock and Roll. Return of the King is focused on Presley's 1968 Comeback Special, a live concert performance Presley delivered on a TV program a little more than a decade after he made it big. Although Presley had become an international sensation just a few years after he began his singing career in 1954, Presley's time in the army had diminished his popularity somewhat.

Presley's many movie performances didn't help the matter, as the movies not only pulled Presley away from his music for five years but also proved to be largely unpopular, particularly as the years went on. The songs in the 1968 Comeback Special were meant to remind audiences of Presley's greatest hits, thereby drawing audiences...

How Old Elvis Was When He Bought Graceland
Image
A brand-new Netflix documentary, Return of the King: The Fall and Rise of Elvis Presley, reveals insights into Elvis Presley's 1968 Comeback Specialbut not all aspects of the international icon's history are captured in the movie. Return of the King focuses on the efforts by Presley and his team, particularly his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, to kick-start his career once more after Presley's time in the army and myriad other factors reduced public interest to a certain degree. Given this specific focus, many biographical details are absent in Return of the King.

One such aspect of Presley's life that is only touched upon in Return of the King is the acquisition of his now-famous home, Graceland. Graceland is a mansion situated on a 13.8-acre estate in Memphis, Tennessee, and it is now the final resting place of Presley and several of his family members, including his daughter, Lisa Marie Presley,...

Every Song Elvis Presley Performed In The 1968 Comeback Special
Image
Return of the King: The Fall and Rise of Elvis Presley is Netflix's newest musical documentary, examining Elvis's tumultuous career and highlighting some of the songs he performed in his famous 1968 comeback special. The 1968 Elvis comeback special was a pivotal moment in his career, seeing him return to the stage after years of working in the film industry at the request of his manager, Colonel Tom Parker. Feeling dissatisfied with the lack of artistry in his movies, the special was a return to form for the iconic singer.

Though some of Elvis Presley's best movies, such as Viva Las Vegas, are considered classics, Elvis is known best in pop culture history for his influence on music. The 2022 biopic, Elvis, examines the toxic relationship between the star and Tom Parker, who pushed him toward his more commercial appeal. With great music from bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones dominating the industry,...

Elvis Presley's Relationship With The Beatles Explained
Image
Netflix's Return of the King: The Fall and Rise of Elvis Presley takes a deeper look into tumultuous periods of the singer's life, including his notable meeting with The Beatles during a complicated point in his career. After graduating high school in 1953, Elvis started his music career with his first studio album released in 1956. That same year, Elvis made his movie debut, appearing in Love Me Tender. His star continued to rise, but his career was halted in 1958 when he was drafted into the Army.

Elvis Presley spent two years in the Army, a period clouded in insecurity and worry that his fans would have forgotten about him. During that same time, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison formed The Beatles. Like Elvis, they attracted a younger crowd, at least at first. As the years followed and their popularity spread beyond the UK, it's no question...

What Happened To Elvis After 1968 Comeback: Career Revival & Death Explained
Image
Netflix's new documentary Return of the King: The Fall and Rise of Elvis Presley revisits the period in Presleys career when he was at a crossroads. Converted in 1961 from Elvis Presley the singer to Elvis Presley the movie star at the behest of his influential manager, Colonel Tom Parker, Presley had become dissatisfied and restless. Presley's movie roles had become plastic, fake, and formulaic, and he yearned to be singing again. So in 1968, Parker lined up a make-or-break comeback television special to re-introduce Elvis to his stage audience. For Presley, the stakes couldn't have been higher. While Presley was away with the U.S. Army, the music business had changed beyond recognition. The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were rampaging through the U.S., and a new socially active movement, led by Bob Dylan,...

Where To Watch Elvis Presley's 1968 Comeback Special
Image
Netflix's Return of the King: The Fall and Rise of Elvis Presley revisits the 1968 television special that marked Presley's return to live performance after a seven-year hiatus. After seven years of Presley making movies, his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, lined up a make-or-break Christmas television special to re-introduce Elvis to a music scene that had changed beyond recognition. The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were rampaging through the US, and a new socially active movement, led by Bob Dylan, was challenging norms. Parker proposed a $1.25 million exclusive rights deal with the NBC Television Network.

NBC brought in frequent business partner Universal Studios to share the cost, per vintagerockmag.com, and Presley's cut was a cool $1 million. NBC chose Bob Finkel to produce the special, who set about persuading Parker, NBC, and the show's sponsors, the Singer Sewing Machine Company, that he needed full creative control and the services of Steve Binder,...

What’s Coming to Netflix in November 2024
Image
Look, obviously the big news this November is the U.S. presidential election.

But for the moments when you want to look away from wall-to-wall coverage (or just stop doomscrolling), Netflix has plenty to keep you occupied. Plus Oscar contenders like “Emilia Perez” are now streaming on the service. But all of that is just preamble to our No. 1 pick this month, because when Mike Schur has a new television show, it’s time to pay attention.

Top Pick: “A Man on the Inside”
