A Cliched Caricature

James Sunshine's "Killing Mary Sue" attempts a satirical deconstruction of a well-worn trope but ultimately becomes the very thing it seeks to parody. The film, which follows a group of writers who try to kill off their all-powerful, flawless main character, suffers from a severe lack of narrative focus, meandering between meta-commentary and a generic action plot without truly committing to either. The result is a lukewarm and ultimately unmemorable cinematic experience that delivers neither genuine laughs nor compelling thrills.

The supposed "clever" interactions between the characters feel forced and contrived, lacking the genuine spark necessary to engage the audience. The dialogue, often laden with clichéd pronouncements about storytelling and character arcs, feels painfully artificial, as if the writers simply strung together a series of pop culture references without any regard for natural conversation. The film's self-awareness feels less like wit and more like a crutch, failing to mask its underdeveloped plot and thin characters.

Is it worth watching? No. It's a film that promises a clever critique but delivers a clumsy and uninspired caricature.

Great fun

I had the opportunity to watch this movie with an audience and people were laughing and having a good time, it's not a serious movie it's silly and absurd and just entertaining great great performances from all the actors, lots and lots of fun. This film is unique nothing like anything I've seen before from start to finish keeps you interested it's the kind of movie you can watch more than once... happily. The main character who plays Mary Sue Sierra McCormick does a great job as does Martin Kove and Dermont Mulroney and Jake Busey all phenomenal performances and all the actors and actresses whose names you don't know did great jobs as well thoroughly enjoyed and was entertained from start to finish.

Big Apple Film Festival Premiere ~ 10/10 experience!

I had the opportunity to see the movie at the Big Apple Film Festival in a completely packed theatre in May. The film received an incredible reaction from the crowd, myself included. It was fun and funny - the film seemingly does not take itself seriously one bit but then sneaks up on you with an unexpected sentimentality. Lead actress Sierra McCormick gives a 10/10 performance. I also loved the soundtrack, including music from band Can't Tell You, which suits the plot and the opening scene exceedingly well for those who take the time to listen to the music and lyrics. I'm super excited to watch again now that it's available to stream!

It's nice to have fun again

Killing Mary Sue" is a fun, fast-paced movie that's perfect to watch with a group of friends. I saw it in a packed theater during the LA Film Festival and had an absolute blast-can't recommend it enough. The performances are strong across the board, and the writing and editing are sharp, keeping you on the edge of your seat with no dull moments.

If you're expecting a heavy-handed political message, this probably isn't the film for you. But if you're in the mood for something that pokes fun at everyone equally and leans into absurdity purely for entertainment's sake, Killing Mary Sue is right up your alley. I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes more popular as word spreads.

WOW

Writer, director, Editor James Sunshine has a carnival in his head and he's put it all into this fantastic movie. Centering around an unwitting yet apt female hero, this movie will make you laugh out loud and make you cover your eyes from the horror, all in the same 10 seconds. This movie is very well cast with the likes of Martin Cove, Dermot Mulrooney, and Katie Killiacky, supporting-the breakout performance of actress Sierra McCormick as Mary Sue. This film won best picture at the Los Angeles independent film festival just last month, and I predict we'll be seeing big things from this director in the future. Very well done!

Beautiful character

So Mary Sue has a bit of baggage but every female superhero does, right? This film takes us on a joy ride of discovery, mayhem, humor, and tragedy. The sudden plot twists and stories within stories take us in a very entertaining and engaging romp. I can't believe that I became totally infatuated with the main character Mary Sue and I worried when she had self issues to deal with but was excited for her when she came to terms with who she is and where she is headed. My wife had issues with some of the violent bits but the action in this film was necessary to understand Mary Sue and to see what a few unpleasant moments in her life has done to shape her into the powerful woman that takes charge of her life going forward. I loved the fun and the film and hope to see much more from this fabulous team.

Fantastic job

This is pure fun. I've worked with Mr. Sunshine before and I love his deliberate uncomprimising sense of humor. I'm a huge Dermot Mulroney fan and where else are you going to see Dermot, Jake Busey and Martin Cove in the same film? Sierra McCormick plays Mary Sue and makes her believable - which is no easy task in this delightfully nutball romp. She kills the action scenes -- reminiscent of Kick Ass but with her (and Sunshine's) unique vibe. This is an action movie with most of the action shot in camera and therefore has that wonderful tender loving care feel of the movies I love. See this film and enjoy!

A Wild, Fun and Surprising Ride from Start to Finish

"Killing Mary Sue" was such a fun journey from beginning to end. The story keeps unfolding in unexpected ways, constantly surprising you. There are some surreal moments that really elevate the dark comedy and make it even funnier and more exciting. It's sharp, well-written, well-directed, and the performances really sell it. Definitely worth watching-I recommend it!

Smart Comedy!

Loved this unique and fun satire that stands out with its clever writing and sharp delivery. James Sunshine has done a fantastic job both with the story and his distinctive directing style. The acting is spot-on across the board, with Sierra McCormick giving a particularly memorable performance. The film strikes a perfect balance-light in tone without ever feeling campy or forced. The pacing keeps things moving briskly, and the story unfolds with plenty of quirky twists and unexpected turns that keep you engaged throughout. It's refreshing, smart, and consistently entertaining. A really great watch!

A wild ride from beginning to end

Had so much fun watching this film that was filled with surprising, clever, and laugh out loud moments all throughout. Creative, original, funny, dark and truly entertaining alongside excellent performances by the cast. I went in to the movie knowing nothing about it and surely didn't expect the wild ride that ensued. In a world where movies are increasingly re-makes or derivatives of other ideas it was so refreshing to watch something that was so novel in both its inception and execution. I look forward to watching again to catch many of the nuances that I most assuredly missed the first time around.

IFS Best Picture Winner

This movie won Best Picture, best director, and best actor at the LA Independent Filmmakers Showcase and with good reason. It has a unique blend of dark humor, irreverent twists, and bloody action. Killing Mary Sue is low budget but doesn't take itself so seriously which totally works. The action is satisfying and quick editing keeps you entertained. The movie delivers on its unique concept which our main character is a mary-sue trope turned on its head, and great performances especially Sierra McCormick. Dermot Mulroney and Jake Busey together are a great combo and the whole host of oddball hitmen trying to take down Mary sue are a lot of fun to watch.

Dark (humor) Sunshine

What a wild ride! Lol! This movie was creative storytelling + fantastic acting + great niche references ("Stop sweeping my leg!") + dark humor + a couple of hilarious punny names.

Bravo to all involved, in particular Sierra McCormick who killed it (literally and figuratively), Dermot Mulroney who captured the annoyed and aggrieved politician so poetically in this era, and James Sunshine, writer / editor / director. Although the tone of the film does not match his name, it was certainly a BRIGHT and well executed story!!

There is quite a bit of violence (as the name might suggest! Haha!), but my distaste for that is on me, not the film! The humor FAR outweighed the body count! Well done!!!
