Can't quite figure what's wrong with it

This show has me scratching my head, and partly at my own response to it. There's definitely something (or a few things) not quite right, but I'm not sure if it's the occasionally disastrous acting or actors (the actor who plays Arch's boss Marcus is abysmal, with one and only one facial expression in his toolbox), their inability to rise above sometimes mediocre and/or clichéd scripts, or simply bad direction. So I don't want to blame it all on the writers or actors, because direction has got to have something to do with it. And yet despite all that, I watch the show religiously every week and continue to be entertained by it. Maybe it's the earnestness of the leads, IDK, but I still enjoy it and I hope they can work out the problems for a better S2.

Per Season Review

SEASON 1 (3/5)

I'm very happy to finally see some nice productions taking place in the Saint-Pierre et Miquelon islands! It's such a hidden gem in the world.

The show is the formulaic detective show to watch after work we all know. It doesn't re-invent anything for the genre but gives you some entertaining investigations and a very charismatic cast, especially the main duo, Josephine Jobert and Allan Hawco, who shine in their respective roles.

The show seems to be stuck in their "crime of the week" format, each episode ends with a reveal that is supposed to make move forward an overaching story which it's nice but it's usually five minutes of it and then they barely come back to these reveals until the end of the next episode. I think the show would gain by mixing in a better way their main story and the episodic crimes.

It's a comfort show; despite the murders, Saint-Pierre never shared any heavy subjects or any very sad/difficult moments.

As someone from Saint-Pierre, I had a fun time guessing which scenes were shot in Saint-Pierre and which one was shot in Canada, but if you don't know the islands by heart like myself, the edits made everything pretty smooth.

The last episode made me excited and very intrigued about the next season, but it was a little unfair to end like that.

One big cliche Wait I take it back...

I like Allan Hawco and Josephine Jobert.

I like the back drop of St Pierre.

I like the bilingualism.

I want to like this show but until episode 6 it is one cliche after another.

But it really redeems itself in Episode 6! There may be hope for this show!

Up until episode 6 I thought this:

This is wIf you are a fan of cozy mysteries you will recognize every single plot of every single episode at the beginning of the show. Even the side stories are cliches. It is only the music that creates suspense.

Surely between France and Canada some writers with some creativity could be located...

Maybe send these two detectives out to comb these two countries and find a creative team capable of coming up with a plot worthy of the actors and the location.

Must watch

This show has me hooked and there have only been 4 episodes so far. The plotline of a cop/detective entering a new working environment and working with new people is something that I always enjoy watching.

In this series the two lead characters are very likeable and interesting as they both have background stories that we want to see. The stories of each episode are also very interesting and you never get bored.

I would love to see many more episodes of this show as the characters have a lot of chemistry and there is also a very fine balance of drama, action and comedy that makes it so fun to watch.

Similar to another good show.

The premise of this is very much like The Mallorca Files. Both series are set on a tourist island, with two very different male and female police officers. One of the police officers has arrived on the island to work, but is under a mysterious cloud. After joining forces with a very established local officer, both end up being a great team after a wonky start. They solve some tough cases as both are very capable in their own way and their unique skill sets mesh incredibly well. There is also amazing country side and interesting locals to enjoy as well.

The similarities to the other series aside though, Saint Pierre is a very enjoyable show on its own merits. I really hope it does well and we get to see many more seasons.

Did anyone know this island even existed?

So I got to see Saint-Pierre for the first time at an early screening in Toronto back in December and truthfully didn't even realize it was a real place at first. Who knew there was an island off the coast of Newfoundland that belongs to France! I had heard of other islands in the Carribean but had no idea we had one so close to Canada. Anyways, that really peaked my interest to see the show and so far in the first episodes its been fun to see the location!

The two main characters seem to strongly dislike each other but I'm sure that will change and I look forward to watching these two good actors bring that to life. Looking forward for more!

Good setting but thin plot and characters need more

Love love the setting. Exquisite. It is the star of the show for now.

However, we are damned with the same old, stale plot line of a crime that is solved in 47 minutes. People are more sophisticated now with Netflix and British crime series that take the crime over a number of episodes. Stop the "Murder She Wrote" template and go for the more complex, like Netflix "Lincoln Lawyer" or "Mr. & Mrs. Smith". Both only an hour long but gave the viewer a story that we could sink our teeth into. Hence their success! Trust me we can handle it.

Same with the character development. Too many paper-thin tropes. The sassy female, the crooked captain, the rich villain, the newcomer with a sorry tale. All of these are fine in general, but you absolutely need to give them some depth. Make them interesting, juicy. Canada's "Family Law", for instance, their characters have some meat on the bones. Have to engage your viewer in stories with weight and characters we care about and want to know more.

oui oui

In Episode 2 of Saint-Pierre we get to see Bastille Day celebrations. Suddenly Arch and Fitz discover a mysterious body and much hijinx ensues. The two of them clash over their different approaches - Fitz goes by his gut and Arch cares about evidence. This ends up being entertaining to watch the two of them disagree.

Overall I've been so impressed with Josephine Jobert's acting. I'm excited to see her onscreen chemistry and friendship with Allan take shape. Saint-Pierre as a location is really neat to see and its fun to see new facets of the island in each episode. Looking forward to the next episode to see where it takes us!

Mediocre

I see that the current rating is 8.1 which this TV show does not deserve, not by a long shot. There is nothing new here, a bunch of stereotypical writing, I kept hoping that my prime suspect from episode 1 is not going to be the one who actually did it but of course it was and when that happens, I kind of tend to lose any interest in any new episodes. It's not fun guessing 15 minutes in who did it, is it? I also had a feeling of watching Death in Paradise but then I realized that the female lead was in it (quite frankly didn't recognize her). I am not going to continue watching, but kudos to everybody who is, just not worth my time.

So good! That isn't a surprise, though.

Series started with it's feet hitting the ground swiftly and surely.

Hawco is great as Fitz. The chemistry between he and the Arch character is great. Purefoy is diabolical as the promised nemesis of the the police department and the island at large.

The scenery is stunning and kind of makes me want to go there, if I'm honest. Though the ferry ride would be very expensive, I expect.

I did not love what they did with Kris Holden Reid. He was kind of wasted on such a :one of" character that didn't have a huge amount of depth.

I look forward to tuning in for the next episode. CBC has done it again!

solid and entertaining

This is worth watching. The setting is great and Arch and Fitz are good characters that seem well anchored and with room to grow. The mysteries are on the cozy side, but without the main characters being ridiculous/camp, though there is a sense that things are going to get more serious.

I like that Arch is smart/capable - she holds her own and isn't dressed ridiculously. Fitz is a bit of a curious mix - in exile and aware of past decisions that were bad or questionable. He has an air of regret, but also an unwavering belief in his own instincts.

We are slowly getting to know more about the characters and I find myself wanting to know more about them. Looking forward to the rest of the season.

Trying hard to like it !

I'm not a big fan of this show. I truly want to like it and enjoy it but so far, not so much. The acting is stilted, the police chief's acting is horrible and the actor seems like he is only rattling off his lines without any feeling and as many say, every episode is so predictable. The two lead actors keep continually and annoyingly glancing at one another and there's no real chemistry between them. I'm on Episode 6 so I've definitely given it a chance but I don't think I'll continue watching. The scenery is lovely and I wish we had visited St. Pierre/Michelon when we were in beautiful Newfoundland and Labrador.

An old friend feel with a brand new face!

Great first episode. I'm a big fan of Allan Hawco and his new show, St. Pierre, doesn't dissapoint. I'm quite pleased with the character development so far, combined with a story line that has enough crevices to explore to keep things going in a number of directions. I am very intrigued with the Newfoundland/ St. Pierre connection as a backdrop for the show. It has an air of mystery while litetally being in our own back yard. There is an old friend feel (to Republic of Doyle) without any feeling of "ripping the old show off". Well done on the first episode to all involved. Looking forward to many more!

Unoriginal but Okayish

Yet another "touristy" police procedural with every episode devoted to solving a crime while a big bad wolf is being secretly chased behind the facade as part of the show's larger mystery. That pretty much sums the show.

It aims high but the mediocre attempts at comedy don't help. The scripts are not exactly weak but they don't really dazzle. The actors are okay though none are stars or easily recognizable.

Notably the show has indeed progressed well. Each episode has been an improvement over the previous. It might benefit from an ordinary US tv lineup of this year. I'll probably be watching the whole season but I doubt it will be renewed for a season 2.

Saint-Pierre finally released! Excited for this series!

Saint-Pierre finally released it's first episode - and it did not disappoint! For starters, Saint-Pierre et Miquelon is more than just a picturesque location-it's an integral part of the story. The show takes full advantage of the territory's isolated charm, using the environment to heighten the sense of mystery as well as danger. From windswept cliffs to the commune's eerie church, every shot feels deliberate. This is a setting we rarely see on television, and many of us Canadians have not yet had a chance to explore, but it gives Saint-Pierre a distinct and memorable identity. Viewers will feel as though they've been transported to this hidden gem. Looking forward to seeing more!

Good entertainment

I don't know exactly why, but I immediately developed a pleasant closeness and sympathy for the team. Maybe it's because I know Josephine Jobert from Death in Paradise. But her partner also gave me a feeling of trust with his calm, likeable manner. For me personally, the casting team did a good job. Perhaps the familiarity is also due to the climate on the island. It doesn't reinvent the genre, but it's still a solid, entertaining show with good actors and pleasant scenery, which I like. Unfortunately, that doesn't happen very often with new series these days. I would be happy if the series gets more than one season.

Fun & Refreshing

I'm a sucker for a good ol' fashioned Canadian police drama, and Saint Pierre hits all the marks. The location is unique, the storylines, while sometimes outlandish, are unique, and the chemistry between the main cast is evident. The writing is balanced with some cringe-worthy lines, and some that make you laugh out loud.

It's not over produced as shows of this ilk can sometimes be, which is refreshing, and it doesn't play to play to many typical 'Newfoundland' stereotypes.

I'll keep tuning in to see these characters continue to develop and to see what else can happen on Saint Pierre, and am already hoping it gets a second season.

Nothing new

I am reviewing this after season 1 (a second series is expected but hopefully I will manage to avoid it).

Florence from Death In Paradise gets shipped off to Canada (Saint Marie to Saint-Pierre) and basically plays herself while show's writer and producer (a relative does the music) allows himself to star in the series.

Both are out shown by a small dog that gets written out nearly as soon as it is written in and then there are a load of French Canadians speaking English to one another to suit the new boy who understands the language anyway.

On a global scale this is very average and as soon as there was a cliffhanger I expected the Death In Paradise theme to play.

Nothing new.

Unoriginal, shallow.. only if you're really bored

The whole idea of the series is nothing new but the location makes it interesting enough to give the series a try. Into the third episode now it is unfortunately pretty clear that this is just another average show. The dialogues are weak and shallow, same as the joking attempts. The main female lead is okay, the male counterpart is lame. His facial expression is always the same and looks like he is high or didn't sleep much. There isn't really any chemistry between them. The storyline can't save that - unoriginal and kinda boring. There are too many good shows out there to waste time with this one. It's just okay...

Episode 2 - Kill Lil!

The second episode of the show Saint-Pierre "Kill Lil" is a must-watch episode that hits all the right notes. "Kill Lil" is a thrilling showcase of what makes Saint-Pierre so unique, especially to us Canadians. Bastille Day in Saint-Pierre is vibrant, chaotic, and the perfect setting for an intense episode. It is very cool to see Bastille Day represented in Canadian content. I really love this fun collaboration between French and Canada to showcase this celebration. Set against the colorful chaos of this important day, the episode follows Fitz and Arch as they unravel the mystery behind an unidentified victim and a potential assassination plot. The case itself is packed with moments of real danger, but it's the growing bond between Fitz and Arch that steals the show. This episode does an amazing job of blending suspense, character development, and the unique atmosphere of Saint-Pierre into one amazing package. Highly recommend those of you who live in Canada to take a watch on Monday nights!!

Who knew Saint Pierre had the highest percentage of English speakers in all of France?

It's a police procedural like almost all the others, but set in a rather unusual location, the French territory of Saint Pierre and Miquelon, just a short ferry ride away from Newfoundland. According to my research, Saint Pierre and Miquelon is resolutely French, with a pretty monolithic population of French-speaking French people, mostly descended from Normans, Basques and other western French peoples. But if you take a look at this show, not only is English very widely spoken (and many of the people we follow regularly seem not to have any French in them) but the people are remarkably diverse, much like you'd expect in, say, Canada. Why would a French territory have a Canadian cop come over on secondment? What is he doing carrying a weapon on foreign soil? How does an island of fewer than 6000 people have so many murders?? Do they have a sister-city relationship with Cabot Cove??

Excellent first episode

Fitz's abrupt transfer to Saint-Pierre sets the stage for a personal and professional transformation. This first episode of Saint-Pierre does an excellent job of showing his culture shock and struggle to fit into his new environment, from navigating a different policing system to dealing with the fallout of his actions back at home. Yet, the case of Gabby Kennedy's murder forces him to put aside his frustrations and instead focus on the task at hand, showcasing his sharp instincts and determination. Fitz is a flawed but deeply compelling and relatable character, and his journey is one I think viewers will want to follow. Definitely recommend watching this first incredible episode!

"Queen Bee" is everything you could want from a pilot episode

"Queen Bee" is everything you could want from a pilot episode-it's thrilling and emotional. Fitz's arrival in Saint-Pierre is both humorous and poignant, as he grapples with the unfamiliar culture and his own sense of exile. Arch, his new partner, is introduced as a professional who of course has secrets of her own. Together, they tackle the mysterious death of Gabby Kennedy, a commune leader whose life and death reveal layers of intrigue and deception. The murder investigation is expertly crafted, with twists that keep viewers guessing. Beyond the case, the show excels in showcasing the beauty and isolation of Saint-Pierre et Miquelon, turning the setting into a character in its own right. By the end of this first episode, you'll be fully invested in the characters and the setting.

Incredible new series!

What an incredible start to a new series we have all been waiting for. Arch is a standout character in the premiere. Her polished Parisian demeanor and methodical approach to police work makes her very intriguing to Fitz. However, the episode hints at deeper layers to her personality, including her reasons for being in Saint-Pierre. Arch is a character who commands respect and curiosity in equal measure, and her partnership with Fitz promises the audience plenty of drama and growth. Watching her navigate her own challenges while solving a complicated case makes for a compelling start. We are in for a treat!

Stodgy and poorly scripted

Oh dear, oh dear! Where do I start? I'm a big fan of Ms Jobert but what on earth induced her to take the lead in this when she doesn't even appear to be the main character!? It's also very formulaic. Let's see if we've seen it all before! We've got a chief of police, his assistant chief (Jobert), a fish out of water and doesn't want to be there detective, and three chummy officers. Yes, we've seen it before in the UK. It's called Death in Paradise and Saint-Pierre is just a clone of that. There seems to be no on screen chemistry between the two leads and despite being the "name" on the cast list, Jobert is relegated to a secondary role beside the new unhappy detective. Won't be watching any more.
