Well...what can you say?

A slightly unusual take on a war film, created and written by Mr Adler himself. In these days of political correctness and international cooperation with Japan, it's unusual to find a film which revisits (at least some of) their brutality to POWs during World War II and shows them in a bad light.

Scott Adkins attempts to demonstrate that some of the Japanese followed the Bushido code of honour, but that aspect of the film is largely lost even in the limited cruelty and violence shown here.

The film is a must-see for Scott Adkins fight fans, and he performs in spades.

However, if you are a WWII afficianado, close your eyes and move on. Historically and militarily accurate it is not. To be fair, any film dealing accurately with this subject matter would be sickeningly unwatchable. At least Mr Adkins has created something reasonably entertaining if you leave your brain at the door.

Great action movie

I like Scott Atkins movies. He is a great martial artist. It is his time to shine in A-movies like he did in JW4.

The action parts in this movies are good. The rest is in a slow tempo. What is strange, is the shirt Scott is wearing. In continues changes colors and stains. Too bad that the director misses this while shooting the film. Overall a fine movie.

Another Scott Adkins Marital Art Action Flick...

If you love watching martial arts action films then I can assume that you know who Scott Adkins is and how great he is in doing marital arts, so here is is back with another WW 2 time era set action flick which will keep you entertained throughout the entire time in which some prisoners of war are trying to survive and escape a Japanese camp.. There is nothing very special about this one but I will say this is one of Scott Adkins's better films that he has done in recent years despite having a low budget entire WW 2 setting looked believable and rest of the cast also did well.. It's very unfortunate that a great martial artist and a good looking actor like Scott Adkins is stuck in doing B movies which release direct to video instead of the big screens, Hollywood has done him dirty.. Anyways support him by watching his films and if you enjoy action films with some highly choreographed fight scenes then this one is for you without any doubt...

I was sure i was gonna like it more... but its decent.

Ever since i saw him in Undisputed 2, i have been watching pretty much any movies he star in. I consider myself a Scott Adkins big fan. So when i heard about this movie, i was really hyped. Grabbed some beers, and was ready for an old school martial art extravaganza. Sadly i didn't connect much with the story and the fights, while competent, never really griped me.

The movie has a fun intro but it is set several years after the events of the actual movie. Of course there is a bit of "guys waiting their turn to engage" trope but otherwise its what you would expect from a movie like this. Then you get taken back and the actual story of the movie start with little introduction. James Wright (Scott Adkins) plane is shot down and he get captured.

My biggest issue is the movie then become more of a war movie than a martial art one. Yes there is several fight scenes, but its too often random Japanese soldiers with zero personalities doing 3 on 1 fights against Adkins just for the sake of aknowledging we watching a Scott Adkins movie.

You never get the exitement, or the feeling of anticipation, for him to overcome the next fight or next vilain if you prefer. Normally you would expect the next opponent to be bigger, badder and be more of a struggle, but its not the case. The movie kinda even pull a "switcharoo" on this. Its like it want you to care more about "The Great Escape" part.

While the side characters who are also POW do have some personalities and distinctive looks, i never really cared for any of them. I think this is probably my biggest issue with the movie as a whole, i didn't care much about the characters and the main vilain seem to switch back and forth between cruel and evil to honorable.

Overall its not a bad movie or anything. If you like Scott Adkins you should find entertainement in it. I did to a degree. I didn't "dislike" the movie. But i guess i was expecting this movie to be more of an 8 and it turned out more of a 6.5/10.

That said, i do think the movie was made on a very small budget, so they still managed to make something decent with what they got.

I am gonna round it up to a 7 by IMDB's notation system. I actually enjoyed it more than several movies i gave a 7. But i think because my hype was much higher, i felt disapointement more than if i watched a random movie i had no expectations for.

At least Scott Adkins seem to pump out these low budget martial arts/action movies quite frequently, so its fine if i don't absolutely love them all. Ill be looking for the next one.

Scott Adkins Shines in Prisoner of War

Scott Adkins is, undoubtedly, one of the top five (5) best martial arts movie stars in the world today. He has the distinction of not just being a great martial artist, but a formidable actor, as well. Prisoner of War, a World War II martial arts action film gives Adkins the opportunity to have both fully on display. This film has great drama and martial arts action.

The story of Prisoner of War is set in 1942 during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines. This occupation was the subject of one of the most notable and brutal demonstrations of the Japanese wartime cruelty, the Bataan Death March. In this act of cruelty American, British, and Philippine Prisoners of War were made to walk sixty-five (65) miles from one prison camp to another. Many soldiers died in this atrocity.

Adkins is a British soldier captured and imprisoned by the Japanese. He is not just an ordinary prisoner. He is skilled in the Japanese "art of the Empty Hand", as well as being proficient with a Samurai Sword. During this period it was considered forbidden for Asian practitioners to teach their respective martial arts to Westerners. This theme carried through the 1960's, when Bruce Lee was widely criticized for his teaching of the Chinese art of Kung Fu to Westerners.

His fighting skills makes him the subject of numerous, cruel, and deadly face offs at the hands of the Prison Camp's General, played adeptly by Peter Shinkoda. There is a race against time as Adkins fights to stay alive, and his fellow prisoners to notify the outside world of their existence in this cruel internment camp.

Adkins wrote, produced, and stars in this film.

The film smartly is set in one basic location; the prison camp. This provides a great setting for the telling of this dramatic story in a cost effective way. The film is small, but it doesn't seem that way. This is in part because of smart Directing by veteran film actor and tough guy, Louis Mandylor. Mandylor is a good character actor who also seems to have some chops as a Director. He may be the future Jesse V. Johnson, someone I am sure who has influenced his filmmaking style greatly.

Prisoner of War has some smart resemblances to some other good films. There is a strong sense that it was influenced by another Adkins' film, Savage Dog. There are also traces of the Ip Man films in this one. While they have influenced this film, it does not seem like a knock off by any means. It stands on its now.

As for the fights and choreography, they are top notch. This film starts out with an exciting martial arts fight scene and they exist throughout this action packed drama. The fights are well choreographed, well executed, and well filmed. These fight scenes include some great weapon ones. This is, certainly, a testament to Adkins' skill in this endeavor.

The supporting cast was largely unknown to me; however, they were all very good.

Prisoner of War is a great historical action and martial arts film.

The film is violent and brutal in parts.

I highly recommend Prisoner of War.

Glide to Freedom

Fight scenes save the movie. There are a few problems with "Prisoner of War". Firstly finding a decent opponent for Scott Adkins. He towers above all in the fight scenes, a stronger looking Japanese soldier not to be found anywhere. The same problem in the Dojo, why are they all so slender built. I found other problems with the construction of the camp, with the nurses in pressed uniforms and the glider take off. The movie is also too long and has many scenes that could have been made shorter. Scott Adkins is at his best when he has no chance of winning. When the odds are against him he overcomes and triumphs. In this movie he simply does not have his equal in ability or strength. Bring back Boyka please.

Good film if you want to get some sleep

Waited almost 2ours for the film to start.

Weak fights, weak story, and didn't do there homework with the details Sandbags are being moved like pillows, plane is towed with a line that's hanging limp... come on... When there is some action like a decapatation... don't think you get to see it, the camera just pans away.

Scott Adkins Delivers a Standout Martial Arts Period Piece

Prisoner of War is a refreshing entry in Scott Adkins' filmography-one that blends martial arts action with the grit of a World War II survival story. Adkins plays a British POW forced into brutal fights against Japanese soldiers determined to break his spirit, all while plotting to escape the camp.

The movie feels like a clever genre mash-up: part The Great Escape, part martial arts tournament film, and part survival drama. It works because it doesn't get lost in the crowd of generic action flicks-there simply aren't many (if any) World War II tournament-style prison escape movies out there. That uniqueness alone makes it stand out.

What really sells the film is its solid storytelling. The objectives are clear, the characters are compelling, and the stakes feel personal. It's not just another flashy martial arts showcase-it's a down-and-dirty survival tale, with echoes of The Deer Hunter's intensity and the grit of Bridge on the River Kwai, but scaled to fit the kind of stripped-down storytelling that suits Adkins' best work.

The action is thoughtfully staged, with wide takes that let you appreciate the choreography. When Adkins faces multiple opponents, it feels grounded and believable rather than over-the-top. At the same time, the emotional hooks run deep-particularly the rivalry between Adkins' character and the Japanese camp commander, which gives the fights weight beyond just physical spectacle.

Ultimately, Prisoner of War is one of the stronger Scott Adkins vehicles in recent years. It balances genre-blending with tight, impactful storytelling, making it not just one of the best Adkins films but also one of the strongest direct-to-video action releases of the year.

Great War film

I saw this at the Beverly Hills festival and I can say that I am really impressed. This is one of Scott's best acting in a bit and the film really captures some really intense and emotional moments. The fight scenes were really amazing with the beautiful fight choreography. I would say that there is no down parts to this film because I truly like this movie very much and I hope we can see another Scott adkins and Louis Mandylor team up again. The storyline is paced fantastically and really shows what is going on. The ending was very great and when the next Scott Adkins movie releases I will definitely be watching it.

Scott Adkins, what more is there.

I've been a fan of Scott Adkins since I first saw him in Boyka undisputed series.

This movie was decently ok, apart from the fact the RAF never were in the that environment of war in WW2 it was the USA, but on top of that fact a British airman schooled in martial arts in the 1940's is a little out there in believability, but none the less a pretty decent film.

I liked this movie.

At 135:28 you can her Godzilla's roar. lol

It' is a good story the special effects are lacking. They are easily overlooked. I have seen a couple of Scott Adkins films and will peruse his whole filmography expecting more hidden gems. The Godzilla roar caused me to be a little more biased. Thus giving it a score of six vs a five. Listen carefully at the time stamp in the title it's very faint but priceless!!

The 80's are back!!

Old fashion adventure movies are getting back to the trend!! Special effects are hilarious and the plots even more! But we'll all agree that a hilarious movie will be always worth a visit to our vintage comic movies.

Very enjoyable at the beginning for the scripts most less when it comes to true meaning.

Scott Adkins shows range in war drama

Scott Adkins wrote the story himself - it's a good one. What you can see in the movie is another part of him you'll rarely see - that he can indeed act not only as an action badass, but as a different kind of character. True, he is a fighting machine here as well, but I hope I made my point clear, because "Prisoner of War" has a bit of drama, a bit of action, a bit of survival. Whether it's historically accurate, as some argue in their reviews - there isn't much here for historical accuracy.

The movie gets a star more, because there was no DEI here in any aspect: blacks or characters with *exual deviations. I don't see any reason why it can be ranked with something like the usual 4 to 5 stars most of his action movies get - true, they are simple and rely solely on the greatness of his skills, but it's not the case with this one and Scott deserves different roles, because he can fit.

It is a slow movie, there is no clarity of why the people are in that camp and eventually get moved to another, nor why Scott's character was treated this way, so this could be seen as a weaker spot, but not that weak, because at the end of the day - it is a prison camp in Japan and they are weird (not in a positive way, or at least not always) people.

Very Impressive

I don't watch so many war films these days but thought I would give this a go and was very pleased I did.

Scott Adkins is obviously a skilled martial artist, acted well and the supporting cast were all very good. Good to see ex MMA fighter Cowboy Cerrone making films.

The story was well rounded, directed and edited very well and fight scenes were choreographed beautifully.

There are a couple of times you have to suspend your disbelief but, the film is not portrayed as historical fact, so as long as it entertained I didn't mind. I think a lot of people reviewing films forget that not everything has to be 100% believable.

This was made on a budget of $2 million, but looked more expensive, once again proving you dont have to spend $100s millions, like Hollywood regularly do, to make entertaining movies.

I dont understand why all charachter on this movie looks like unemployed people.

They all no background in movie industries.

They look stiff and clunky.

And the most annoying think is japanes soldier.... OMG......this is most clown, stupid, corny japanese soldier i ever watched in my life.

Uniform, flag, weapons, charachter, tottaly TRASH.

Adkins gradually redeeming himself

Scott Adkins has made some really good movies like: Undisputed, Ip man, Hard Target, Avengment, Universal Soldier etc.

However, I felt lately that some of his movies were going a bit down hill. In JW4 I didn't like his character it was like he was put in there just to be with Keanu. Then Diablo, both Marko zaror and Adkins are great martial artists but the fighting in that movie was poor. Killer's game with Batista, it was just comical and didn't suit Adkins, it had such a good line up of action stars but was done poorly.

Now to the main point there was good action scenes in this from the start; Adkins surviving in the orient, it provided a good thrill and great use of camaraderie between the characters. I enjoyed the fighting scenes in the pitch. The scenery reminded me a bit of hard target 2 and Savage dog. The only downfall I would say of this movie was the setting, too small and felt cyclical; it was just the fighting pitch and the sleeping bunker which was making it a little montonous. If it explored other areas like the jungle or had a few more locations it would have been done better. Still, alright movie and Scott these are the types of action we want to see.

Truely garbage

Fight scenes are ridiculous, the script is horrible, and unfortunately Scott's acting is as though it's his first ever movie - completely amateurish. I can't believe how bad this was, I was sure I would enjoy it because of the scenery and fight scenes, but everything about this film was just trash. Such a shame, the story's premise had potential.

Baddie

I enjoyed this movie , Scott adkins is no doubt a good fighter .

I would like to see him in more movies as a baddie, like boyka in undisputed 2 and 3 and in the expendables So give it some thought Scott?

So many actors seem only to do good guy movies , then realised they are better at bad guy movies .

The shirt

Some dreadful props in use and the white tee-shirt is nothing short of embarrassing. It's a decent watch though if nothing else is on.

The martial arts as normal from Scott are of a high quality and it's nice to see a different setting that being the second world war, everything else serves a purpose so see this if you've nothing else to do.

One very boring martial arts movie... Very very boring

I am a Scott Adkins fan boy, but ... I had high expectations for this movie because the director is good and there was high praise by "critics". It turns out lost good reviews are probably paid ones.

This is a very very boring movie without any true meaning and a weak script. Direction is good, martial arts fights seem good, but there is no climax or anything you have not seen a million times already.

It seems like a very well directed kids movie with martial arts.

Pass...

LIVE ACTION ANIME

All the way through the movie I am reminded of Anime type movies. The dialogue, the facial expressions just missing an animated twinkle or tear from an eye. I thought the story was a 10. With better directing and editing this could have been a 10 movie. I am not a fan of Anime, I am curious if fans of it like this movie. Interesting the most 10s come from Germany and followed by Iran.
