So far I'm into episode 4. Ep1 was indeed a bit boring, as has been said by others. But you'll get to the end. In Ep2 the story begins to unfold. Don't expect a masterpiece in originality or story telling or camera work or dialog or anything really. All the 10 star reviews are just not objective, but neither are the 1 stars. Taste may be a bigger factor here than in other shows, because the story is nothing new, but it is done in a somewhat original way as a mix of horror (not much of it really), drama, and comedy (childish/quirky /silly, like in many k-series), and it may just suit you or it may not. It's harmless k-comedy-drama at its core in a zombie setting. Why not. The characters are a bit generic and could use more depth, but I do care about the main parts. And I wonder how the story continues, and what becomes of them.
So all in all, a solid 7. After Ep4 I raise to 7.5. Fine with me for a few hours of escapism.

First episode was boring. Too many unnecessary military details that only people who served in Korean military would appreciate. My wife was literally falling asleep. Take all the military stuff out and then first two episode should've been single episode.
The director should lay off his obsession with one point perspective. Everything is shot straight on. Nothing in angles. Gives it very repetitive look.
Comedy is very elementary and juvenile. Very forced cartoon like comedy which isn't very natural.
Can't complain about acting however. Jisoo is better than I expected and Park Jung-Min pairs well with her.

Wow, what an absolute emotional roller coaster. I just finished watching episode 8 and i am a literally sobbing!! Loved how this series had a range of genres-horror, comedy, romance and melodrama. Top tier acting from all the cast members, hats off!! I watched some of the behind the scene vids, they worked soo hard for this!
I do hope there's a season 2, theres so much yet to be answered. I also want to see more of Jayeon and Youngju together, they looked too good together 😭
I know the downvotes or low ratings are mostly from people who probably didn't even give this a watch (lol we know who)- Nevertheless, we have the Byeon Wooseok enjoying newtopia, the negative reviews dont matter ;)

Warning: Watching this Review Might Be More Entertaining Than the Actual Show.
So, you're thinking about diving into Newtopia, huh? Well, let me be brutally honest: You're better off watching paint dry. Sure, the show starts with the intrigue of a zombie apocalypse and a relationship crumbling under the weight of a world gone to hell, but as the episodes go on, it becomes more of a bad and crazy ride than anything you'd ever want to remember. The apocalypse isn't the only thing that needs fixing-this show desperately needs a cure for its confused identity.
The Premise: Wasted Potential
The premise is a promising one: a zombie apocalypse where an engineer and her overbearing boyfriend break up, and then-bam!-the world ends. Sounds like it could be an emotional, thrilling ride, right? Nope. By episode 4, you're wondering if the zombies are the least painful thing to watch on screen. What starts with an interesting relationship dynamic soon devolves into melodrama, random zombie killings, and characters making decisions that make you want to pull your hair out.
It's like someone handed them a script, but it was written by people who didn't understand how apocalypses work, let alone relationships. The problem is, the show never fully commits to any tone. One moment, you're trying to care about some life-or-death struggle, and the next, you're stuck watching awkward slapstick comedy with zombies... Because why not?
The Acting: Jisoo's Unholy Return to the World of Empty Stares
Let's talk about the elephant in the room-Jisoo. Look, I know she can sing, and she can probably act in a music video-but here, she delivers about as much emotion as a paper towel in a rainstorm. At some points, it feels like they hired her because of her looks, not her ability to convey any real emotion. When a character is supposed to be panicking in a zombie apocalypse, and yet she just blinks like she's taking a nap, you can't help but wonder if the apocalypse itself would be more riveting.
And Park Jeong-min, poor guy, actually tries to make something out of his character, but it's like giving an actor a broken script and telling him to "make it work." He has moments where you can see the potential, but it's just lost in the sea of cheesy writing.
The Plot: A Zombie Apocalypse That Might as Well Be a Sitcom
As the series progresses, you'll start to realize: This is no apocalypse. It's a bad comedy show with zombies. First, you're introduced to the idea of survival and loss-great, gripping stuff-but then it just becomes a circus. The characters seem to forget about life-and-death situations and start cracking jokes. After a major character dies, we watch as the survivors mourn, and then-BOOM-next scene, they're cracking jokes as if they just finished a stand-up comedy show. What the hell happened here?
And then there's the whole zombie cure storyline. The final episode promises something epic, and instead, it leaves you with a beer drinking solution. Yes, you read that right. A character survives by drinking beer-because clearly, that's the answer to the world's problems. The fact that this is treated as if it's a logical solution tells you everything you need to know about the writing quality.
The Tone: Bad and Crazy Without the Charm
One of the biggest problems with Newtopia is the tone. It's like they took the Bad and Crazy formula, threw it in a blender, added some bad CGI zombies, and then told the actors to just wing it. At first, you might get a few chuckles out of the random comedic relief, but it gets old fast. How am I supposed to take the serious moments seriously when zombies are attacking and someone's cracking a bad joke about how they'll "kill them with kindness"?
Honestly, by the time you hit the final episode, you're not sure whether you should cry, laugh, or scream. The constant shift between serious tragedy and slapstick humor makes you feel like you're watching a high-budget disaster, but with low-budget execution.
The Release Schedule: Slow Death by Episode
The weekly release of Newtopia is just... cruel. Eight episodes of this nonsense, and they stretched it out for weeks? Why? It's like they wanted to drag you into their world of confusion and let you stew in it. The slow drip-feed of episodes makes the agony even worse. They could've just released the whole thing, let everyone binge it, and be done with it, but no-let's release it weekly and give viewers time to think, Is this a joke?
And to the upcoming viewers: If you're considering watching this show, don't. Seriously. It feels like watching a slow car crash you can't look away from, only you're in the car. It's a binge-watch series that doesn't even deserve that privilege because, by the time you finish, you'll regret every minute you spent waiting for each episode.
Final Verdict: A Zombie Show That Needs Its Own Apocalypse
Newtopia is a mess-a tragic, confused, poorly executed mess. What could have been an emotional, action-packed zombie apocalypse thriller turned into a hot mess of bad writing, inconsistent characters, and random comedy bits that make no sense.
Do I recommend it? Well, if you enjoy watching characters cry over the death of a loved one one minute, then joke about their existence the next, while surviving off beer (because who needs a real cure?), then go ahead. If not, you might want to just skip it and watch a documentary on real apocalypses because, frankly, it would be less painful.
Rating: 6/10 - The apocalypse should've taken the script with it. Giving it 6 cz why not it wasted my 6 six weeks of my life.

It is good and beyond my expection ! Jeongmin JISOO and all cast did a great job and the production and plot is also great. The flow of plot is fast and fun. It really worth to watch. Comedy and zombie together seems fresh and fun combination so I am looking forward to more episodes. Also JISOO is so pretty and her acting is very natural. Her acting is really good and you will not believe she just formally star in two series. Park Jeongmin is a good actor I know him already but he is also really good. Other co-stars all did a great job. The horizontal and vertical moving of scenes also make senses.

Korean Drama '' Newtopia '' is a horror comedy with a lot of action scenes.
The drama is centered around the romance of the two leading characters, which is the prompt for all the action, but also quite enjoyable in the end, even though the first episodes weren't that great.
Also, the zombie part was fairly basic, with the utilization of many tropes of the genre, but it was entertaining nevertheless. The final episodes were, in addition, very emotional, as the teams finally bonded.
On the other hand, the story was moving way too fast, and the humour was not as enjoyable as the rest of the genres.
Finally, the performances were all great by everyone in the cast.
So, overall, six out of ten.

I know that part of the theme is to bring humor but why do they portrayed these military personnel as naive and unprepared. They were shown as weak making it hard for me to understand and to sympathize with their journey.
Characters' reaction/ story lines to certain events are overly exagerrated and it seems a disconnection with the tone of the story. Sometimes the situations often feel forced which caused inconsistency and detraction from the emotional depth.
Then at times, some of the characters struggle to bring the depth to their roles because of their predictable lines.
The story is dragging.

Absolutely hilarious. I love Jisoo's acting so much, she delivered so much emotions in just 2 episodes. Although the first episode got me slacking a little but in episode 2 everything changes. It gotten way more funnier! And I love the dynamics between Jisoo's boyfriend and his friend. The way he kept looking out for him haha. Furthermore, I have to admit it that I watched this show for Jisoo because she always served!! Like whenever she pops out on screen I was like "YES GIRL" "OKAYY FACECARDDDDDD" Overall, I love this show, I don't watch much K-drama.. but for Jisoo, I will :) And the zombie appearance is lowkey scary haha.

I am not a big fan of camp-style of shows because it is very hard to pull off. I find there to be a fine line between being entertaining and being stupid. Unfortunately, too many shows fall over the line into the stupid category. Newtopia didn't.
I felt the actors did a great job with their characters. They committed to their character's exaggerated actions in a serious manner that kept it entertaining without insulting the audiences intelligence.
The zombies were great as well. The makeup team did a terrific job with how they looked and the actors themselves sold the zombie movement and actions.
The overall story was solid and provided good motivation for the character's actions and behavior.
I also appreciated how they nicely wrapped up the series in the final episode yet left it open for a second season. All the loose ends concerning the goals of the series were settled but the situation of the world itself leaves plenty of room for further exploration.
Fun series that is worth watching.

I am a fan of the zombie and horror genre. The first two episodes were decent, episode 1 the build up, episode 2 the chaos, but episode 3, completely missed the mark following episode 2, already felt like it was dragging on, there is too much comedy in a ZOMBIE/horror genre , nor did I find any of it funny. The acting isn't convincing, and falls flat. Too much screen time on the roof and on the soldiers that seem like they have no idea what's going on, even after they've witnessed numerous on occasions. I will give episode 4-5 a try, hoping it can recover from it, but this definitely does not deserve a 10 like all the biased Jisoo fans are giving it.

Actually I'm not a fan of zombies because I hate gore but this series is great it's very funny and doesn't make me feel disgusted by blood or zombie scenes, also at first I was worried about Jisoo's acting because everyone criticizes her acting exaggeratedly, but when I watched episode 3, bro she's a great actress the role suits her perfectly I think all these critics are just haters who don't like Jisoo only and don't judge her performance but because she's Jisoo the idol, you can't believe she's the least experienced among the crew and yet her performance is great, also the lead and his friend are very enjoyable. Thanks to all the makers of the work for this great effort.

As far as korean zombie shows go, this one is not bringing too much new stuff to the table, except maybe for the "Police Academy" level of incompetence of the military,
I called it "Benny Hill and the walking dead", but it is actually like *German* comedy from the 70s and 80s. Very controlled. Very childish. Very innocent. And very boring. Which doesn't mean that it isn't hard work to get it right, and they certainly did their best. I admire the dedication a lot more than the result-
It really is like one of those German saturday night evening shows you had to watch with you parents back in the days before the wall fell and cable brought PG-13 approved nudity into that mix. Except for the zombies. Back then the zombies sat there in the audience, clapping dutyfully, and of course rhythmically. So at least in that regard this is a little more interesting.
But as you can see, I'm far more fascinated about what this reminds me of than what it actually does. There are long stretches where it's like watching a person with a walking aid crossing the street, hoping that they don't get crushed by a car the second the lights turn red. Meaning that while the punchlines are obvious the minute the whole thing starts, you are mostly relieved when it's over.
On the other hand, the plot is decent, the zombies are k-style perfect and gory, and the destruction and chaos are on point. Every once in a while there is even a golden moment where the scenario allows for the comedic moments to become so absurd that they are actually funny. But get ready for long periods of the afore mentioned old man crossing the street, while a great zombie show is running in the background.

Wow, where do I even start? Episode 1 of Newtopia was totally bad. The pacing was painfully slow, the plot felt like it was going nowhere, and the humor? Just ridiculous. I don't know who thought those jokes would land, but they definitely didn't work for me. The characters felt flat, the dialogue was cringy, and overall, it was just boring and really stupid.
And the biggest disappointment? We didn't even see any zombies. For a show that's supposed to be about surviving in a zombie-infested world, How do you mess that up in the very first episode?
I honestly hope Episode 2 does something more because this was a rough start. Let's see if they can turn it around.

I luvv the cast and plot of the show but I don't like how they ended it.
They had not shown us anything when they was heading to station I am pretty sure they arrived safe but i am so curious about how will they move on from what happened to them.
Jisoo acting when she was running away from the bad guys I don't like it.
You will ask me why I will answer you that they are 3 guys and just 1 girl she must run very fast to save her life . You will not understand how is that Scene made me nervous.
There were characters I loved them and cried when they died . Some of them were the 2 guys with jisoo ( young joo ) dude they were the besttt.

Not your typical romcom or zombie thriller. Feels more like a movie than kdrama. Director should've start the show with female lead since kdrama fans love beautiful visuals. And show more of them together to get viewers connected with them til 8th ep
**They'll show more of their relationship in between as flashbacks, like the scenes in Shop for killers (same writer).
Pros: Good acting, good chemistry between cast, easy and straight forward plot, zombies are bloody gore, the lead couple are cute in flashbacks, the FL team looks promising for a fun ride with zombies, ML seems creative and not scared fighting zombies so it's not dumb and dumberer just a hint of humor take
Cons: Too short and quickly done scenes, unsure which direction it'll take next which is good to keep us guessing but also worry it'll be heavily leaning to soldiers instead of the romantic leads. I hope I'll come back and say how happy there's very little military scene especially the squad leader we don't really care about them like that.

"Newtopia" promised an intriguing exploration of a utopian society, but unfortunately, it fell flat on almost every front. From the outset, the series struggles to find its footing, delivering a narrative that is both cringeworthy and painfully boring.
The storyline, which had the potential to delve into complex themes and thought-provoking scenarios, instead meanders aimlessly. The plot is riddled with clichés and predictable twists that do little to engage the viewer. It feels as though the writers were unsure of the direction they wanted to take, resulting in a disjointed and lackluster narrative.
Character development is another major letdown. The protagonists are one-dimensional and lack any real depth or relatability. Their interactions often come across as forced and awkward, making it difficult to invest in their journeys or care about their outcomes. The dialogue, intended to be profound, often borders on the absurd, adding to the overall cringe factor.
Visually, "Newtopia" does little to redeem itself. The set designs and special effects are mediocre at best, failing to create an immersive or believable world. The series lacks the visual flair and creativity that one would expect from a show set in a utopian society.
In conclusion, "Newtopia" is a missed opportunity. It fails to deliver on its intriguing premise, offering instead a tedious and uninspired viewing experience. For those seeking engaging storytelling and compelling characters, this series is likely to disappoint. Save your time and look elsewhere for quality entertainment.

Newtopia is a refreshing and quirky Korean series that blends the zombie genre with comedy, thriller, and romance, making it an enjoyable watch for a wide range of viewers. The series follows the story of Jaeyoon, a soldier in the midst of a zombie apocalypse, and his long-distance relationship with his girlfriend, Youngjoo. Amidst the chaos and danger of a collapsing world overrun by zombies, their relationship is a central focus that adds emotional depth to the show.
The love story between Jaeyoon and Youngjoo is sweet yet filled with complications, mainly due to the constant distance and miscommunication that plagues their relationship. Both characters clearly love each other, but they are caught in a situation where time is scarce, and misunderstandings frequently arise. The distance between them-both physical and emotional at times-adds a layer of tension and humor, as their conversations often result in amusing but relatable mix-ups. Their relationship is heartfelt, and viewers can easily sympathize with the challenges they face in trying to keep their love alive while the world around them falls apart.
Jaeyoon himself is a character full of depth-he's serious about his soldier duties but also surprisingly charming and comedic when interacting with his fellow soldiers. His camaraderie with the other soldiers is where much of the comedy comes from. The soldiers, while caught in the middle of a zombie outbreak, engage in playful banter and find themselves in absurd situations. Their humor is lighthearted and often nonsensical, with many comedic moments arising from their failures and misunderstandings. These funny interactions with Jaeyoon add a much-needed sense of levity to the series, which balances the darker, more suspenseful aspects of the zombie apocalypse.
The zombies themselves are less terrifying and more of a background element in the show. The focus is less on the traditional survival horror and more on the relationships, personal dynamics, and humor that emerge in such an extreme situation. While there are moments of thrilling zombie action, Newtopia doesn't rely on traditional horror tropes. Instead, it uses the chaotic setting of a world overrun by zombies to build humorous and sometimes absurd situations.
The show's tone is also a key strength. It effortlessly switches between zombie action, comedy, and moments of emotional reflection. Whether it's Jaeyoon and his fellow soldiers getting into ridiculous situations while trying to survive, or Jaeyoon dealing with his relationship with Youngjoo, the series maintains a fun and sometimes silly atmosphere, which makes it stand out from other more serious zombie dramas.
The collapse of society due to the zombie outbreak is a backdrop for exploring human relationships and survival. While the threat of the zombies is always looming, the real story is about Jaeyoon's emotional journey, his efforts to stay connected to Youngjoo, and his hilarious misadventures with his fellow soldiers. This gives Newtopia a refreshing, lighthearted vibe, even though it's set in a world where survival is anything but guaranteed.
In conclusion, Newtopia offers a unique take on the zombie genre by blending comedy, romance, and thrills in a fun and entertaining way. Jaeyoon and Youngjoo's long-distance love story provides an emotional core, while the ridiculous humor between Jaeyoon and his fellow soldiers brings the laughs. It's a series that doesn't take itself too seriously but still delivers a satisfying and enjoyable experience for viewers looking for something different in the zombie genre.
Honestly, I watch Newtopia just to see actress Jisoo back on screen. I normally don't watch Korean movies or series but you shoud give this Newtopia series a chance.
As I watched episode 1 and 2, I realized that this series is so good. Zombie series but presented as funny, humorous way, plus the love story between Jisoo's characters and her enlisted army boyfriend making me curious, will they survive and meet again? Resolved their love?. It's refreshing, funny, so engaging, thrilling and Jisoo's acting is so good. She is improving, evolving as an actress. I am looking forward to her future acting projects.
As I said earlier, you shoud give this Newtopia series a chance.

Jisoo is so sweet, she was creative in it and her feelings really affected me. Here I see Jisoo as very creative and beautiful, and the actors are creative too, but I watch her and enjoy her scenes. You may think I'm exaggerating, but anyone like me would feel the same way. I'm very sad about the few episodes, but I appreciate that it was boring and unfortunate that it was shown on Friday, but I love you Jisoo, but I see it in a special way that her movie is very strange and enjoyable. I wonder why people didn't like it, but it's really sweet. Look at the videos on TikTok of Jisoo, who created the world with her beauty and the beauty of her series.

Reading the previous reviews I'm wondering if we watched the same two episodes tbh. I was very excited for this show. I'm someone who likes Romance and I'm someone who loves Zombie Movies or Series. And I like K-Dramas. So I thought this will surely be a perfect fit for me.
Sadly the first two episodes have been rather disappointing. None of the characters resonate with me so far. It's not that funny (at least to me, everyone's humor is different after all), no good true romance, the acting is only so-so and if there's no other military than the guys that we've seen so far then good luck with survival. Maybe it's the mix between Comedy and Zombies that doesn't work for me here. But I've seen these genres together before and it was very well done and fun to watch.
The Zombies at least are nicely done and the scenes are quite bloody so I guess there's still hope for it to get better. I'll definitely continue watching and might come back to my review once the series has fully aired.

Only 2 episodes have released but honestly saying, I am just obsessed with the series already. Everything is so good but the best part is the comedy. I am enjoying it so much, can't wait for the zombie action scenes but I am loving the comic elements as of now. Park Jeong Min is great great great and so hilarious for real. I am now his fan for sure. As for Kim Jisoo, I knew she was a crackhead in Blackpink so of course this role would suit her a lot and she didn't disappointed me at all. She is so funny as well and I definitely see the improvement in her acting from snowdrop. She acted great in snowdrop as a debutant but at some points, it felt like "she is acting", but as young Joo, it doesn't feel like she is acting, it feels like she is young Joo, she is living that character which is important for any actor out there. The plot is also quite interesting and very unusual which makes it even better. It's different from other zombie series definitely, and I am so excited for the upcoming episodes of Newtopia.
