The credits for the show in its original BBC Alba broadcast are in Scottish Gaelic, but the names of the characters within the show appear in both Scottish Gaelic and English (e.g. Mac'Illeathain and Maclean).
This is a rare series featuring Scottish Gaelic on a par with English. Gaelic is spoken by about 87,000 native speakers in the Highlands and the Hebrides. The total number of speakers is around 157,000. Gaelic was originally a dialect of Irish, but later became different enough to be considered a separate language. Unlike Irish in Ireland, Scottish Gaelic is not taught in schools and only 1% of Scots actually speak it. Most Scots either speak Scottish English or Scots. Some People in Shetland speak Norn, a Norse-based archaic English dialect. This series is a major project aimed at promoting the Gaelic language and culture even outside the UK.
