Well told and acted family drama. Could have used a bit more depth

Overview: Overall, I enjoyed this picture. It is extremely well acted and gripping. Even though it is a family drama, at no point does it feel slow or boring. I do wish they could have gone a bit deeper into what caused the rift between father and son, that would have added a bit more gravitas to the film.

Plot: The plot centers around the Mehta family who has just lost the mother of the family. Before migrating with his daughter to America, Shiv Mehta (Boman Irani) has to stay for a few days with his estranged son, Amay (Avinash Tiwary) - an architect who is not comfortable sharing his ideas at work.

The story focuses on the relationship between father and son and how that spills over into other areas of their lives.

Acting: The acting is excellent, with great performances by the two leads, Irani and Tiwary. They do manage to showcase the right emotions as the two men try to understand each other. They are ably supported by Puja Sarup as Anu Mehta and Shreya Chaudhry as Zara. Chaudhry in particular was excellent and is really excelling as an actress.

Conclusion: A good watch if you enjoy family dramas. Would recommend this movie.

Good heartwarming story

This story revolves around the relationship between a father and his son, who has long parted ways in terms of home and ideology. However, both of them yearn to settle their differences and shine in each other's eyes.

The roles played by Boman Irani and Avinash Tiwary are just superb. They fit the characters very well. Their demeanor helps to portray the differences between this father-son duo. But will they reconcile and be a happy family together?

That's the crux of the movie. Though the story is quite heartwarming, the directorial choices are quite debatable. It starts with a very slow approach, which could have been totally avoidable. Yet, I would recommend this movie to any person who has/had a beef with their parents and hope this will shed some light on their relationship.

Underwhelming

Underwhelming. Why?

The character of Shiv Mehta, played by Boman Irani, is unrelatable. Unreasonably peculiar. Petulant. Mr. Shiv Mehta was not showing idiosyncrasies of a person going through grief but merely demonstrating a person who is socially awkward and a pain in the rear for the others.

The character of Shiv Mehta's son is unreasonable tolerant of the father. We are told that he is lacking self-belief. Be that as it may it was too 'meh' to see him mowed over by others.

Ms. Zara, the love of Mehta Jr, is a periphery to the story. Does come across as unempathetic.

Anyway, I appreciate the attempt to plumb the depth of love & care a father and son could share amidst rocky waves. But this movie did not do that.

That's how you show the Father-Son relation

This decade we watched Animal, a movie that talks about Father-Son relation in a very distutbing and violence way possible. And now we see this masterpiece by Boman Irani, The Mehta Boys, which I believe is genuinely a better way to portray this relationship of Father and Son.

Such a sweet and inspirational story, I wish this movie gets the appropriation that it deserves. Aniwash Tiwary nailed the character and I must say Boman Irani proved that he can sit on the Director's chair.

There is nothing to complaint about. The performance of each character, though there only a few faces we could spot, but all they actors did a very good job.

The movie successfully shared its vision to the audience. It compiled many un-spoken territories in the individual and social atmosphere. Where I could see the forgotten soul of the nation and emotional and tricky bond of a father-son.

I genuinely wanted this movie to shine like a source to get inspired emotionally. It really worked well.

Thanks Boman and team to make it happen.

BOMAN IRANI HAS DONE IT AGAIN

The Mehta Boys" is a cinematic masterpiece that deserves global recognition and awards! This film is an absolute must-watch, and I cannot recommend it enough. It resonated so deeply that I found myself laughing and crying towards the end-a testament to its powerful storytelling.

Boman Irani, you are a genius! The way this film balances emotion, humor, and raw human connections is nothing short of brilliant. Every performance was incredibly moving-from Avinash, Shreya, and Puja to the entire supporting cast. It's so refreshing to see a film that focuses on real, raw talent instead of star kids, bringing us performances that feel authentic, effortless, and deeply impactful.

The writing, the direction, the cinematography-everything about The Mehta Boys makes you feel like you're watching something truly special. It's cinema with heart, the kind of storytelling we desperately need more of.

This isn't just a movie; it's an experience. It makes you reflect on family, relationships, and the emotions we often suppress. It deserves to be taken worldwide because stories like this deserve to be seen and celebrated everywhere.

Story of troubled father-son relationship

There is no doubt that Boman irani is a very talented actor and this has been amply proved in earlier movies. Now in this movie he shows his versatility as a script writer and director too. As an orthodox, conditioned and stubborn father in his 70s he lives in the role as only he can. He has an estranged and strained relationship with his architect son. He has just lost his wife and is about to fly out to America with his daughter when some ticketing issues force him to stay back for two days with his son. They argue, disagree and quarrel over petty issues continuously with zero bonding. They don't seem to have any common ground anytime, anywhere. The son Avinash Tiwary has his own problems at work and in in a romantic relationship. Will the abrasive relationship of father-son be resolved and repaired is the question ?

Boman as director provides a pretty interesting narrative even though a couple of scenes appear to be overdone. There are quite a few emotional and moving scenes laced with humour at places giving sufficient opportunity to Boman to showcase his versatility. Watch him as he emotes a long scene describing how he met his wife and how he knew she was the one for him. Avinash Tiwary has done well as the son who suffers and learns through a period of adjustment. Shreya Choudhry has also acted well as Avinash's helpful friend.

A poignant exploration of the dynamics between a father and son

It's never too late to pursue our dreams and achieve great things. Colonel Sanders started KFC at the age of 65. We have our very own Boman Irani making his directorial debut at the age of 65 with The Mehta Boys.

Boman Irani has proved that he can sit comfortably on the director's chair. He's also co-written and co-produced the movie. Boman Irani and Oscar winner Alexander Dilenaris' script is simple and lovable.

Just recently we watched Animal, the movie that portrayed a Father-Son relation in a disturbing and violent manner. And now we see The Mehta Boys which I feel is a gentler and better way to show a Father-Son relationship.

The Mehta Boys is a poignant exploration of the dynamics between a father and son.

The movie has no bold statements to make. It's just about relationships. Every actor does their bit to perfection.

Boman Irani shines as an actor and a director, delivering a beautifully crafted film. Avinash Tiwary proves his talent and is undoubtedly an actor who is here to stay. Shreya Chaudhary provides solid support.

Without undermining anyone's performance (they are all good), Puja Sarup's stands out in a small role. Her airport sequence will remain in my mind for a long, long time. I just wish she had more screen time.

The Mehta Boys is a heart-warming and emotional film that's a treat to watch. It is cinema with heart; the kind of storytelling we need more of.

More than a movie, it's a reminder to cherish those who are close to you and embrace every moment with them.

An Endearing Family Drama with Loose Structural Engineering

The Mehta Boys (2025) : Movie Review -

The Mehta Boys marks the directorial debut of actor Boman Irani, and I am glad to say that it is a decent attempt, though not entirely successful. The film manages to point a finger at modern family issues that have been explored by many films over the years, including many in recent times. What a simple idea can do, it does, but it fails to spread its wings in this typically formulaic genre. Taking a father-son's strained relationship to intricate architectural segments is a rather poor decision by whoever has written it. You can't end your film by giving more attention and importance to the architecture and its structural engineering problems than to the relationship issues between the father and son. So, it doesn't matter how endearing and emotional the film wants to be, as the professional life issues just don't fit well with it.

The film begins with the introduction of the hero, an underconfident architect, Amay (Avinash Tiwary), who is struggling with the ambitious project of his company. He is afraid of himself (I don't see how he passed the campus recruitment interviews), and he doesn't have enough confidence to promote his own talent. He is shattered by the news of his mother's death, as she was the only parent he loved, which means that his relationship with his father is strained and disturbed. After the mother's death, the father, Shiv Mehta (Boman Irani), has to move to America with his daughter, but due to some technical issues with the ticket bookings, he has to stay with Amay for a couple of days. Before going to America, Shiv requests Amay to arrange a meeting with his girlfriend (Shreya Chaudhry), and during this time, many things change between them.

Boman Irani and Alexander Dinelaris's script is simple and lovable, but it lacks the 'X' factor. It struggles to find that one "turning point" or "USP factor," which is needed to elevate the dramatic quotient in any family drama. Thankfully, it's not boring and isn't terrible either; it's just a matter of ignoring small nuances. The father having hallucinations, an overly disturbing personality, and extreme pride do not align well with the character's arc. Amay, despite his talent, is just sitting in the office doing nothing, yet he is still employed. What kind of employment is that? I am an engineer myself (in a different field, of course), but I have a few friends working in civil engineering and architecture, and believe me, the kind of pressure they face and the amount of spontaneity the company demands is tremendous. Amay was far from that, despite being a quiet participant in many office meetings. The boss would just look at him, say a couple of words (not insults), and leave him be. Trust me, it doesn't happen like that even in a normal corporate office. The Mehta Boys focuses too much on this architect's business rather than the bond between him and his father. I believe the direction this movie took was wrong, if nothing else.

Abinash Tiwary delivers a good performance, even though the character arc is somewhat lacking. The complexity is over the top, yet in some scenes, his facial expressions do the trick. Shreya Chaudhry was chosen to portray a beautiful corporate girl, I believe, and that's exactly what she did. She looked like that quintessential corporate era girl, and her deliberate attempt to wear a saree also worked well visually. Boman Irani has performed well, which is to be expected from an actor with so much experience in his kit. In that two-minute airport scene, Puja Sarup stood out as the best performer in the entire film. I just wish she had more scenes and more screen time.

Since it's an OTT release, I wouldn't expect hit music, but I would definitely anticipate a decent background score. We don't get that. The cinematography also isn't very good, following a simple, basic framework. The Mehta Boys is just a little under two hours, which is pretty sufficient. The editor couldn't do much more than this, but yes, a few paused scenes and slow-motion pans could have been avoided. There isn't much in art design or production design since it's mostly set in a rented house and an office meeting room. The hotel scene was a much-needed break. Irani's directorial debut seems to have lost its essence in storytelling. The grip is missing, and most importantly, the subjective vision is completely absent. Most of the blame lies with the writing, followed by the direction. It's all about not realizing your own potential. The Mehta Boys is rough and cold in parts when it could have been more emotional and absorbing.

What a film!!! A must watch

Had the pleasure of watching The Mehta Boys. I had high expectations after seeing the trailer, and the film not only met but exceeded them.

Boman Irani-what can I even say? We've all seen his brilliance in Munna Bhai, 3 Idiots, and so many other films, but with this, he proves that he's just as incredible a director as he is an actor. Every frame, every scene is crafted so beautifully-it's truly a work of art.

Avinash Tiwary was phenomenal too. His performance was powerful, and it's amazing to see such talent getting the platform it deserves.

I'm not someone who usually writes reviews, but this film absolutely deserves all the love. If you haven't watched The Mehta Boys yet, do yourself a favor and go see it. A must-watch!

Refreshing & Heartfelt

Boman Irani's Mehta Boys explores the troubled relationship between a father and a son. The story unfolds after the loss of the mother when they are forced to live together for 48 hours. Without being too direct, the film beautifully establishes their strained bond through subtle interactions and mannerisms. The father and son's stubbornness is portrayed well, highlighting both the emotional distance and the care they still have for each other.

The setting, architectural commentary on the city, and subtle humor add to the film's charm. The camera work and editing are excellent, immersing the audience in the film's world despite a limited cast.

Avinash Tiwary once again proves his talent and is undoubtedly an actor here to stay. However, it is Boman Irani who truly shines as the father, excelling in portraying the character's stubbornness and affection simultaneously. Shreya Chaudhary and Puja Sarup provide solid support. The film offers glimpses into the reasons behind their strained relationship, though a deeper exploration could have strengthened the emotional connection. Overall, Mehta Boys captures one of the most beautiful yet complex relationships-the bond between a father and son-with honesty and warmth. A heartfelt and refreshing watch. Highly recommended!

Struggle of life - classic story

Nice script but the screen play was great Top notch direction & acting Casting looks just perfect A must watch movie.

Locations looked great and realistic The car driving scene was realistic .

Interesting thing was , every closed looks taken looked very much relative and realistic.

No doubt the director did a great job. Hotel scene was made great. Usually overacting happens in this kind of storyline but this case was very fine. Every character ensured that only the required acting is done.

The office room scene was also fine , the boss character did a great job. The casting was great for the boss. Only suggestion was to make the daughter character a bit more detail.

Overall a great picture.

Bickering, Bonding, and Boman: A Heartwarming Ride!

Boman Irani debuts as a director with this film, and with good reviews all around, it was inevitable that I wouldn't miss it.

Amay, a young architect with a tumultuous relationship with his father, is forced to stay with him for 48 hours after the sudden death of his mother. With constant bickering and fights at home, along with professional stress, how will things unfold for the father-son duo?

The premise may not seem extraordinary, but it is the screenplay that makes this film special. The strained relationship between father and son keeps the narrative engaging, as both parties are right in their own way. If you're 30+, you may relate to many of the incidents. The film's slow pace works in its favor, allowing you to connect deeply with the characters. Whether it's Amay's boss, girlfriend, or sister, all his relationships feel straight out of reality. However, the monologue by Amay in the office meeting, though impactful, feels cinematic against the otherwise realistic tone of the film.

Avinash Tiwary is perfect in his role-you can't imagine anyone else playing it. Boman Irani literally runs the show with his screen presence and impeccable acting skills. Their chemistry feels natural and works well, but a loophole remains: the film never explicitly mentions why they are estranged. Bandish Bandits fame Shreya Chaudhry is equally good and puts her best foot forward in this role.

I've always adored Boman as an actor, but with this film, he proves he is a class director who should make more movies. The wide shots, especially the use of rain as a backdrop, are a masterstroke. The color grading is another brownie point for the film, adding to its charm.

This is one of the best films of the year. Don't miss this light yet impactful movie-it will stay with you for a long time.

That scene in hotel where Boman sir is answering the question how did you know she is the one.

Brilliant movie. A father son relationship is always tricky. It's like dal rice....soul food.....that's what the movie is. That scene where Boman Irani is telling the incident about the saree. How the camera moves closer to his face and how his expression changes. Pure genius.

The movie has no big bold statements to make. It's just about relationships. The more one analyses each shot it opens a new understanding of what thought has gone in creating the entire movie. Each actor has done his or her bit to perfection. Each sequence even where Mr Sen tries hard to encourage Amay to share his ideas and say something has so much to say. Thank you Boman Irani sir for this masterpiece.

Beautiful and heart touching story

"The Mehta Boys" is a poignant exploration of the intricate dynamics between a father and son Watching it was very emotional for me specially cause i never get the joy to take care of my father due to his early demise This film beautifully captures the essence of a father-son bond , their frictions.

Movie is a heartfelt journey that resonates deeply, especially with those who have experienced the complexities of familial bonds. It's a must-watch for anyone seeking a story that touches the soul without revealing too much of its plot.

Boman and Avinash both were great throughout the film. A must watch film...

One of the best movie of Boman Irani

My first movie review

Hey, I'm writing my first movie review! Usually, I just give stars, but this movie...wow. It's underrated, but a must-see; the father-son relationship is amazing. Trust me, it's worth watching. It shows some friction with the dad, but how that gets resolved over time and how they bond is really something.

A movie with no substance!

A very badly executed movie with no proper substance to showcase! Story context is highly socially relevant theme that revolves around tricky complex father-son relationship. However, this particular movie didn't have any serious content to appeal. It lacks intensity, emotional connect, depth. Plus it was way too slow, can get patience of any tested badly. Looks more like a movie made just for the sake of it. Originally a Hindi movie dubbed in all South Indian languages, available in Amazon Prime. My ratings is 5/10!

Connecting

It was so relatable, the fact that there exist similar montages of relationship between parents and children. The gap that cannot be filled however, the ways to still make the other half of our lives better and engaging. The fact remains that egos will clash yet finding a space that well belong to all and create new memories filled with joy, smile, laughter, funny, candid moments. Sharing life in hybrid way.

Great acting and pure delivery. Sir Boman Irani, looking forward for more movies and content. This was a heart-felting experience to watch you act. There were some chilling moments and yet there were sweet surprises.

Father and Son Bonding

Anwar Says: What a directorial debut of Boman Irani -Mehta Boys . Saga have been written and filmed on Mother- Son relationship but you would hardly find much on Father-son conflict/ bonding and here is one, which would take you to their complex characters but with nuance performance. You would keep on judging, who is correct and then the emotion would prevail.

Pitch- perfect played by Boman Irani and Avinash Tiwary and beautifully complimented by Shreya Chaudhary. Belongings to one's own house and surrounding to the seventy plus generations is quite obvious and his complex relationship with the son hardly finds any reason. They drink together, despite being Gujjus, father cooks for his son, anxious to meet son's girlfriend and even enjoys beer with her but wants to play cricket at Navsari. Succumbs to pressure of his daughter to go to US and ultimately succeeds to remain in his own house.

What a story and you would love it despite it's gratuitous pace and it's a must for every son particularly of Gen Z. Watch it today at Amazon prime.
