Ethan Hawke is terrific here

I'm a big Ethan Hawke fan so I was looking forward to watching this as soon as I heard about it. Well, this not only met my expectations but surpassed them in every way. Both critics and the audience seem to love The Lowdown, it currently has a ridiculously good 98% on Rotten Tomatoes and the main reason why is because of Ethan Hawke. He leads a terrific cast who are all at the top of their game here. This series has a little of everything...comedy, drama, mystery, action, etc. It's absolutely one of the surprise hits of 2025 and I hope we get more seasons of this. I can't recommend this show enough!

Such a fun show

The Lowdown is such a fun show. Ethan Hawke is such a good actor and this is one of his best roles in years. He carries this show and steals every scene. There is one person who comes close but he's only a supporting character who isn't in to later in the season and that's Peter Dinklage. Hawke and Dinklage are hilarious together. The Lowdown is about an investigative journalist named Lee Raybon (Hawke) whose obsession with the truth is always getting him into trouble. Hawke is so good here that I wouldn't be surprised to see him nominated for some awards. This is a show where you'll have such a good time watching it that it will fly by and keep you wanting more.

Refreshing non-copoganda southern noir

Seeing Peter Dinklage ready to fight neo-nazis 1 on 3 in the middle of the street at broad daylight, is the kind of punk this show aims for, and it's so refreshing when most mystery/detective/noir shows always try to paint the authorities as the good guys. Well this show takes a whole different approach.

The formula of this show is a bit curious, because each episode has some choice guest appearances that you then seemingly say goodbye to pretty quickly, maybe after 1 or 2 episodes and then they're never to be seen again. It's obviously still too early to tell if this is actually how it is, but it would be a shame if that's the case as all the talent is amazing.

On the other hand, it helps paint a picture of the environment in a unique way, almost like the story was written from the point of view of someone close to the main protagonist who only knew the people indirectly. Like if you ever tagged along with your parent and met some of their friends that one time and that's all the impression of them you ever got.

And since this show is about an eccentric writer and his relationship to primarily his daughter, I can see how the show might written in this way for a reason not yet uncovered. Time will tell.

Definitely worth a watch for people that don't enjoy the usual copoganda slop, but do enjoy uncovering a mystery.

Finally Something Worth Watching!

Ethan Hawk is amazing in this! He's the full blown character and nothing held back. Love him for this performance. The entire cast is outstanding and the storytelling is entertaining, hilarious & deeply engaging. I appreciate the original storyline and the authenticity of the dialogue. Watch! You won't regret it. Bravo!

Very cool, well-done show.

I can't account either for the poor taste of people giving this show low stars. It is excellently done in all respects. High quality neo-noir and with humor. Reminds me of the Coens, but then so many productions these days remind me of the Coens. Very believable incredible characters (that's an oxymoron, right?). A pleasure to see Kyle MacLachlan resurrect his EVIL Agent Cooper from David Lynch's final "Twin Peaks" masterpiece. A real treat to see Dinklage appear and raise the bar for the show.

Fargo-esque but not as good

"The Lowdown" arrives carrying the kind of promise that makes you settle in with real anticipation, since Ethan Hawke brings a familiar gravity to the screen, the production looks sharp from the first frame, and Peter Dinklage strolls in for a guest turn that feels like an event on its own. Hawke leans into a performance that mixes a relaxed confidence with a spark that keeps you watching, while Ryan Kiera Armstrong holds her own as the clever, restless daughter who seems to grab scenes without ever forcing it. For a while, it feels like all the pieces are lining up for something that could be special, yet as the story winds on, the payoff drifts in with a disappointing thud, the twists grow thin, and the detours start to feel more like stumbles than surprises. By the time the final episode slid into its closing moments, I found myself fighting off a yawn, realizing the promise that pulled me in had quietly slipped away.

Sepia Toned perfection

Best show I'd seen in a long time, from the sepia tones in the cinematography to the writing and acting and music This is top notch Love the nod to Chet Baker also what a great series-- I heard Ethan Hawk on a late night show talking about his new series and I barely remembered the name but when we found it on FX we were pleasantly surprised. The first episode was fantastic-- loved every part of it.

Overfamiliar but watchable (much like Ethan himself)

Except for a few exceptions like "Training Day," "Sinister" and "Moon Knight" Ethan Hawke tends to play the same wide-eyed, aging Austin hipster (himself) over and over again, and this shaggy detective series looks more suited for Nick Nolte thirty years ago. But with a top-shelf (even if they can't reach it. Sorry) cast like Dinklage, Keith David and Jean Tripplehorne it at least holds your attention, and I always like when forgotten Midwestern cities are used for noir locales (and it's not like you can understand what Stallone is saying on his Tulsa show). Sure better than this Rosario Dawson series I was an extra on years ago; got so mired in sub-David Lynchian tone it was like watching a tortoise race. The Hawkman Cometh for The Lowdown! Or something.

TWO WORDS.....PETER DINKLAGE .....BOOM! 💣

Episodes 1-4....enjoyable. Episode 5 and the addition of Peter Dinklage takes this to a another level! The chemistry between Dinklage and Hawke is inspired. The back and forward banter is hilarious and they complement each other perfectly! This series is fresh and different amongst all the generic and formulaic shows that come and go. I sincerely hope it's got legs and sticks around!

Great acting, Little Movement

It starts strong but quickly gets lost in its own shadows.

Ethan Hawke delivers exactly what you'd expect - a stellar, lived-in performance - and the supporting cast more than holds their own.

But the story runs in circles, stretched about four episodes too long. It's stylish, well-acted, and full of atmosphere, yet it never really goes anywhere.

Halfway through it starts to become a bit of a drag.

charming, very funny, and distinctive

Charming, very funny, and distinctive--cast is incredible, venue is distinct. Not yet another show shot somewhere because of greater tax incentives. The show has heart, insight, originality, and a deep sense of conviction. It isn't trying to be anything other than what it is, a brilliant reimagination of genre fiction set far from Los Angeles or any other "big cities."

Lame version of Nice Guys

From what I've seen so far this seems like a rejiggle of The Nice Guys, but without the partnership.

I don't think it's awful. It is too slow and not interesting enough for me to go back to it.

Maybe it's get's better later on but the pay-off would only be worth it if the set-up is effective and that wasn't the case for me.

way over the top acting spoils a good story

I like Ethan Hawke but in this one his acting is incredibly off-putting. The character may have been written to be overly dramatic and chaotic (seems to be an invisible rule now that you can't have a normal looking guy as the lead) yet his nonsense shouting, throwing himself around and getting mad at people who try to help him are too much.

Otherwise I'd be interested in following through the story line in small town America with its age old racism, wild capitalism and corruption, yet I don't have the patience for this sort of theatrics anymore.

Brilliant piece of noir.

Love this show! Harjo and Hawke are brilliant together. This is a noir series, so for folks complaining that it's dark, dirty, and gritty, that's the point! The humor is subdued tongue in cheek.

For anyone who is interested in the dark history of Tulsa, there are plenty of easter eggs sprinkled throughout. Harjo has genius vision.

Love this show!

This show has some of the funniest scenes and dialog ever. I have never laughed as hard as I did while watching episode 5 (aka the Peter Dinklage episode). My husband and I rewatched a couple scenes just because they were so funny.

I never really thought of Ethan Hawke as a comedic actor but his timing in this is on point.

Not the Tulsa I lived in...

Tulsa is a beautiful city...don't think I've seen a scene from south of the tracks. Not one scene in midtown or south or frankly anywhere outside of a few dingy blocks. This show depicts a grungy dirty low rent city. Thought it was supposed to be a Tulsa love letter. Aside from that...it's not very good.

Quirky

This show is just strange enough to be great to watch. It's not the formulaic BS that seems to repeat itself over and over with some main network shows. The cast fits their characters well. I like a show where both the writing and the characters do the show justice. Hilarious, weird, captivating...I want more.

Really good show ... gave a 7 should have been a 9

This is an awesome show ..the story, the setting, the characters, the acting are all superb!

I wanted to give it a 9 but landed on 7... should have been a 9 and it's so frustrating to have to deduct points for stupid crap but I felt the anti white sentiment was not only purposeful but forceful... except for the liberal white hero of course.

Still, it's very well done on all fronts .. nothing else to complain about except that my favorite character Waylon disappeared from the cast inexplicably just as I was starting to fully appreciate his contribution.

If they could have managed to leave out crazy politics it would have easily been one of the best shows in many years. If you don't care about that stuff then it's easily a 9 or even a 10.

Chemistry

I adore this entire cast but if Keith David, Ethan Hawke, and Michael Hitchcock could just do shows together forever i would be so happy.

This show is off to a good start and I'm eager to see it develop. This is a biography, drama, but they really should classify it as a comedy too.

Kyle McLaughlin has some of the best comedic timing.

An anecdote for our corrupt times

An anecdote for our corrupt times. Great chemistry and Ethan Hawk shines. Who knew Tulsa Oklahoma would make such a great setting for a film noir series. The child actor is a revelation. Fighting corruption means endangering your family. A frightening proposition. Much better than 6.9 rating. Give it a chance.

Missed the mark

Could have been so good but the acting and characters left me wanting more. I kept hoping Billy Bob Thornton would appear and take the place of Ethan Hawke. Most white characters are portrayed as racist and ignorant. Best part is the relationship between Lee and his daughter. Felt no emotion when watching. So boring...

Sterlin Harjo is a master of storytelling.

Okay I'm biassed because I loved Reservation Dogs. I found it to be one of the most unique series in recent memory. I admire the way Sterlin Harjo conceptualizes narratives and seamlessly weaves characters, setting, and story into highly engaging and engrossing TV.

The Lowdown is just as poignant, lighthearted, and meaningful as Reservation Dogs. Every element of the production - casting, writing, dialogue, filming locations, costume design, cinematography, and especially cultural representation - has been carefully thought out to convey multiple nuanced layers of storytelling. The result is a delightful and engaging series with an uncannily comforting vibe.

This show is a 10/10 for me. I can't wait to see what more is to come from Sterlin Harjo.

Smart writing and engaging acting

What an unexpected pleasure! For me the strength of the writing always comes first. This delivers with great lines, quirky characters and good story. Kudos to Ethan Hawke for going all out here and he delivers! Honestly, I've never been a big fan but it's a pleasure to watch his performance. I like the relationship with his daughter (actress is good!).

Other characters are fun to watch, the antiques dealer, the "security team" schtick, John Doe!, so many more.... I actually like this quite a bit more than Reservation Dogs but maybe that's just because it's more of a grown up world. At my age it's harder to relate to the teenage crew in RD.

Yay for Harjo!

Another Sterlin Harjo masterpiece!

Sterlin steps back up to the plate, without Taika's Watiti's help this time, and knocks it out of the park. His excellent "Reservation Dogs" (also on Hulu) was a brilliant character and location-centric series that should be shown in movie direction/production classes. An absolutely brilliant series that, in my opinion, should NOT have been marketed as a comedy.

Sterlin's obvious love of his home state of Oklahoma is evident in both series, and his direction makes us love it, too. The scenery brought me right into the story and kept me intrigued. He and Ethan Hawke obviously worked well together during the final few shows of "RezDogs", and I'm happy to see Ethan leading this cast. He has a great "everyman" sense that engages us viewers and keeps us interested in the next scene. The casting department brought in some really impressive characters for Ethan to work with, too. I feel safe in saying Sterlin is an "actor's director" and maintains an enjoyable, open-input type set. I predict a huge future ahead for him.

Sterlin has also surrounded himself with a talented behind-the-scenes crew. As of this writing there are only three episodes avaliable (of the eight in the season), but I'm already a big fan of the cinematography, scoring, and set direction. All three of those departments nicely maintains the same feel of the script and overall "dusty, lower-middle class Midwest" storyline.

I'm hooked! Great job, Sterlin Harjo and crew.
