Pimp is an engrossing melodrama that could easily have played to enthusiastic grindhouse audiences in the 1970s.

Violent, raunchy and raw, sexual and street-wise, Pimp is straight-up exploitation, a serious departure for the starlet, would-be pop star and 25 year old veteran of the screen trade.

Palmer is a firecracker as the heroine, a young woman who has to prove she’s as hard — and consequently, as misogynist — as any man.

Lousy with stereotypes and filthy language, the sordid Pimp wraps 21st-century blaxploitation in a lesbian love story as unconvincing as every other relationship on screen.
