Whatever remains of Walt Disney is rolling over in his grave...

Since a few years we are bombarded with rancid, extremely gory, and pretty idiotic trash-horror movies revolving around the legendary cartoon characters we all grew up with, like Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, and Popeye. Why is that? Well, because those nostalgic figures are now so old that all copyrights are expired, and they ended up in the public domain. One might hope that there is still more than enough respect left not to touch these iconic figures - let alone ridicule them - but that is of course not taking into account a lot of untalented horror directors nowadays.

"Screamboat" is not the first horror movie about Mickey Mouse (there are also "Mickey's Mouse Trap" and "Mouseboat Massacre") but I honestly think this is the best of the three. Of course, though, you have to take "best" with a serious grain of salt in this case. There were competent people working on this production - more specifically the producers of "Terrifier" - and there are certainly a handful of inventive & deliciously raunchy kills in it, but all in all it remains an indescribably silly experience to watch in the cinema.

On the nightly ferry back and forth to Staten Island, New York, a monstrous rodent wakes up and promptly begins a massacre. The crew of the ferry and all the other weird characters who take the nightly journey are horrendously slaughtered. "Screamboat" starts off energetically, and especially the first half of the film is shamelessly entertaining thanks to the over-the-top gore, the tongue-in-cheek humor, and the surprisingly subtle references to a whole lot of other Disney classics (Cinderella, Tarzan, Frozen, ...). But then, for some inexplicable reason, things go wrong entirely. The psychotic mouse turns into a melancholic lover in search of his lost Minnie, the kills become bland and repetitive, and the final act seems to last forever. Perhaps the funny effect of a murderous Mickey Mouse wore off quickly, and the energy and good atmosphere on the set was short-lived. One thing is for sure, I'm glad Walt Disney isn't around anymore since many years, so he never had to see this.

You're getting exactly what you'd expect!

This film is passable, if you've seen the trailer or know what this is even about, you'll be getting exactly what you were probably expecting - a bunch of purposely expressive characters you'd wanna see killed in true slasher fashion. This is a goofy, extremely self aware film that delivers on just that - if you're expecting anything serious or anything on the aspect of plot that isn't purposely cliche, then you're not watching the right film. Some complaints lie with the pacing, as well as how rushed the end began feeling and looking. Some kills could have gone farther with the hype of people being behind Terrifier, but worry not, this film delivers in its own special take on that; filming in some spots feels jarring and even blurry, some cheap spots. Some genuinely good moments of laughs and self aware dark humor, along with some really fleshed out and decent scenes. This is much better than some other films in this joke wave, however it's far from anything spectacular or good. Memorable? A good film to watch with friends and even catch in theaters for an experience? Yes. This film is serviceable at the very least, I'd recommend if you know exactly what you're walking into - which you should.

The Rogue Reviewer - Screamboat

I went to see Screamboat on opening night, and to my surprise, I actually kind of enjoyed it. I don't usually watch low-budget films in theaters, but the strong online marketing-along with the fact that Terrifier's David Howard Thornton was in it-pulled me in. I was also intrigued to see how they would take the story of Mickey Mouse's first cartoon and twist it into a horror film.

Having watched the Terrifier series last year, I had a pretty good idea of what I was getting into with Screamboat. While I generally enjoyed the story, the film had the feel of a '90s TV horror movie. That said, the setting was a highlight-being trapped on a slow-moving ferry added a real sense of claustrophobia and tension, making the characters' predicament feel even more desperate.

As for the cast, performances were a mix of good and bad. Some moments felt a bit cheesy and over-the-top, but I particularly enjoyed Allison Pittel and Jesse Posey as Selena and Pete. Their chemistry kept the film engaging and gave the audience characters to root for.

Director Steven LaMorte did a decent job bringing this low-budget horror film to the big screen. The gruesome kills and jump scares will definitely satisfy horror fans. However, there were a few drawbacks. Willie's costume design felt too amateurish and comical to be truly scary. Additionally, the film ran about 20 minutes too long-certain scenes felt repetitive and could have been trimmed to improve pacing.

Despite these issues, I was entertained from start to finish. Screamboat is far from perfect, but if you enjoy gory horror, it's worth a watch.

Final Rating: 5.5/10.

Waste

This movie is terrible. Absolutely terrible. The acting is horrible. It feels like they just pulled random actors off the street without an audition. The storyline is damn near a nonexistent. It's a pathetic attempt at anything I mean I hope and pray people didn't waste their money watching this in theaters. It's funny at times which is why I gave it three stars out of 10, but that's not enough to make up for just a complete lack of anything good in this film. The lead actress is terrible. In fact, the entire cast is horrible except for the mouse actor. This should have been a comedy. It should've been marketed as a comedy and any attempt that seriousness should have been avoided. The budget was high enough that they could rent out a Staten Island ferry, but not high enough that they could avoid using terrible looking green screenshots. The costumes were horrendous. Things were shoehorned in that made no real contribution to the storyline like they were ticking boxes. Complete waste of time. Box office flop this movie should've gone straight to streaming it never should've reached movie theaters and for that reason I'm out.

I really don't know what to say but

I'm pretty sure this movie had a budget of three dollars, seventy-five cents, and a stick of gum.

What were they thinking when they decided to make this cinematic mess-if we can even call it "cinematic"?

Honestly, I have no idea. Have people really lost their creative sense to this extent?

My review of the film:

It felt like I was watching a cheap movie from the 80s.

Oh my God, the effects!

The acting? I swear, it felt like the actors had zero experience. I don't even know where they found them-maybe at a Sunday flea market or something!

And the dialogue? Where do I even begin?

DDDVVVDDD.

Painful and cheesy

I really wanted to like this but it was just so cringe. I don't feel like I heard one laugh actually hit. The budget felt too small, the mouse nothing like steamboat which was daissopiinting. The Disney princesses were a fun idea but then it didn't finish the joke as in none of them were killed in the fashion of the princesses they were. Also the acting.. Really took me out of it. Better than Mouse Trap, but that is not saying much.

The Disney nods didn't entertain me, the film feels like an eternity, the kills just aren't good largely due to the fact a rat is doing them. The lighting is abysmal, the performances are terrible and it felt like a chore to get through. The rat design is laughable, obviously the budget is low so there are limitations but I just couldn't get on board with this. I'm sure there's a crowd out there that will like it tho so please go form your own opinion.

low budget

Wants to be Leprechaun but it's just a bad cash grab that barely resembles steamboat willy. Probably worst disney reimagining ive seen so far. I preferred snow white.. LOL It was painfully stupid and cliché cash grab but pretty enjoyable one at the end. I really liked David Howard Thorton performance - his Mr Bean - like mannerism once again makes these riddicoulus scenes work much better. It could 've been easily shorter tho - there is really no reason for something like this to last over 90 minutes. Some of the scenes feel drawn out and the acting really makes that apparent making it feel even more of a slog to get through. I get they want to be the next Winnie the Pooh film but I just don't see it with this. It's unimaginative and lacks any real creativity. Feels very low budget in all areas. Give these films better budgets!!

Not a fan

Unfortunately I really struggled getting through this one. The deaths were really bad, not one memorable on in the mix which I think this film absolutely needed. It felt like an old sci fi movie, not something you'd see at the cinema which is maybe why I am especially annoyed that I spent on this cinema ticket and watched something that would be on tv late night.

The acting was really cringe and some of those Disney princess actors were especially bad. David Howard did a decent job but there wasn't much for him to do than just stand in one spot and wiggle around a load and giggle.. which soon got a bit boring.

Script was the big problem, the setting on the boat got really tired for me seeing people walking around the same set locations making bad decisions.

This drags...

I would rather punch myself in the face repeatedly than watch this ever again. Someone needs to tell David his 15 min of fame has been long over. It's not acting just putting on various outfits and just moving around. If they paid him anything over $200 a day they over paid.

Only the old man was the redeemable quality of acting in this film.

I didn't know Corny was a genre in film. But calling this movie "comedy" is an insult to comedy.

And what was with the costume? This movie goes down as a "f" listed movie. There are plenty of other independent films that deserve the good money wasted on this mess.

Pleasantly Surprised! Film accomplished what it set out to!

They made a fun, campy, balls to the wall (you'll see what I mean) movie. Definitely the best public domain film I have seen. They took a swing and made this funny with gore. It's pretty much a spoof on Disney and Streamboat Willie but has some heart. This may not be everyone's cup of tea but if you let loose and take it for what it is you'll enjoy yourself. It's refreshing the route these filmmakers took and didn't follow the Winnie the Pooh dark route. I mean how can we take a little mouse killing series? And the filmmakers didn't either, the way they did it was the only way something like this could be successful. Well done!

Absolute waste of time. Worst disney rip off i have seen to date. Slow, boring and just absolute trash. This could be the worst movie I've ever seen. MASTERPIECE!

Screamboat is a wild, relentless ride that takes the best elements of classic horror and slapstick comedy and fuses them into something fresh, chaotic, and utterly unforgettable. From the moment the film sets sail, it delivers a perfect blend of eerie atmosphere and over-the-top gags, keeping audiences both on edge and laughing out loud.

One of Screamboat's greatest strengths is its ability to balance tension and absurdity. The horror elements are genuinely chilling, with an unsettling use of shadows, eerie waterlogged set pieces, and sound design that amplifies the creeping dread. But just when the terror reaches its peak, the film masterfully undercuts it with perfectly timed humor, making the scares even more effective.

The performances are another highlight. The cast leans fully into the film's chaotic energy, giving exaggerated yet controlled performances that sell both the terror and the comedy. The protagonist's descent from confident sailor to panicked survivor is hilarious and relatable, while the villain-whether a supernatural force or a deranged crew member-chews up every scene with deliciously menacing glee.

Visually, Screamboat is a treat. The cinematography plays with perspective in ways that make even the most absurd moments feel immersive, and the film's commitment to practical effects gives it a tangible, old-school horror charm. The use of water as both a literal and metaphorical threat is done exceptionally well, adding an extra layer of tension throughout.

Overall, Screamboat is a brilliant horror-comedy that understands exactly what it wants to be. It's self-aware without being overly meta, terrifying without being too grim, and genuinely funny without losing its edge. Whether you're a horror buff, a comedy fan, or just someone looking for a wildly entertaining ride, Screamboat is well worth the watch.

What is this

I wanted to like this but it just falls flat in every direction. The acting, writing, direction and even the editing was off. The film was predictable and everything you think will play out plays out exactly as you expect. The filmmakers are so uninspired with this Disney retelling which is crazy as there was so much to play with.

Even david howard couldn't save this. I know he's only really done Terrifier but I was expecting him to bring it to the table more but even he feels a bit one note in this and if he was wearing art the clown make up it would be very similar performance.

I was at a screening with lots of press and I will say the marketing team did a good job in getting everyone having a good time - I assume in hopes of good reviews.

Ultimately I will stick with poohniverse lol.

Oddly watchable...

I have to admit that I harbored zero expectations to this 2025 horror comedy titled "Screamboat", given all the crap that has been released recently with the likes of Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Popeye, etc. But still, I hadn't watched this movie already, and given my love o all things horror, of course I had to check it out.

Writers Matthew Garcia-Dunn and Steven LaMorte put together a pretty straightforward script. It wasn't particularly outstanding, but I will admit that the movie was actually oddly entertaining for the cheesy thing it was, pardon the pun. There was something oddly enjoyable about the movie, which I suppose was because it was so far out there.

The only one on the cast list that I was familiar with was David Howard Thornton, and he was portraying the mouse. It should be noted that the acting performances in "Screamboat" were fair.

Sure, "Screamboat" is by no means a cinematic gem in the horror genre, but it was actually an entertaining enough off-beat slasher horror comedy.

And there was actually enough blood and mayhem to keep a seasoned gorehound such as myself sated.

My rating of director Steven LaMorte's 2025 movie "Screamboat" lands on a five out of ten stars.

I prefer high school theatre than this ...

I honestly regret watching this. There was no proper storyline, and the so-called action and horror scenes ended up being unintentionally funny - more like something you'd find in an Instagram reel written by an amateur. Nothing made sense, and it wasn't scary at all.

The monster design was laughable, not terrifying. I truly feel like I wasted both my time and money on this. Very disappointing, especially considering the cast from Terrifier. I expected much better.

No story, no fear - just cringe. The horror and action scenes were laughable, and the monster looked like a joke. It felt like a bad IG reel. Disappointed, especially with the Terrifier cast involved. A total waste.

Try again

If you told me that this cost 20 times as much as Winnie the Pooh Blood and Honey and roughly similar to that of Terrifier 3 I would've said April Fools, but the fact it's true is laughable. The performances, the lighting, the visual effects allabsolutely woeful, to the point I think they might be up there with the worst I've seen. Fair play though, another money grab off an expired Disney IP that will inevitably make a shed load of cash. I think if they wanted to do something with steamboat then actually making it somewhat similar to what we see in steamboat design would be more fitting and ultimately getting better actors. The gore feels cheap and no death is actually fun there's lots of blood thrown up the wall. Just uninspired and boring. Skip this.

Idiotic and an insult to a classic cartoon

Crap like this should not be allowed to be made. It's a complete insult to the imagination and creativity of Walt Disney. I don't care if it's 90 years ago and is public domain, People should have respect for artwork of this nature and leave it alone. This is disgusting and I hope it fails hard! Just because it goes to public domain doesn't mean that you should create a horrible horror movie flick about something like this. This Creator should show a little respect and learn to be better aware of what you are doing! If only Disney studios could sue you, because this is an embarrassment to Disney.

Just bad...

There have been quite a few "children's movie character" horror adaptations in the meantime, but this was one of the worst.

After 45 minutes I didn't feel like watching any more, but I did watch it to the end.

There is absolutely no common thread or any kind of logic in this movie. The scenes are often wildly thrown together or strung together, often without sense or reason. The whole movie has neither wit nor tension and the actors are just as bad. Please, do everyone a favor and stop producing such "wannabe" horror movies that are just plain bad.

Even 4 stars is still too much for this crap! Two hours of wasted time!

The people need to learn how to have fun with movies

Yall need to learn how to have fun with films especially films like this, for 1 it's an indie/low budget film and they still managed to have amazing kills and a sick steamboatwillie costume, and 2, not everything has to be a damn cinematic masterpiece, if you went into it with that mindset then sucks for you, this is supposed to be goofy, cheesy, bloody/gory fun, the premiere I went to, everyone had a blast and was laughing and loved the kills. Everyone on the Screamboat team put blood, sweat, tears, and their soul into this especially after jumping onto this film immediately after terrifier 3. Love this film and would watch it again. Guys, invite friends or family, have a few drinks and food, just kick back and enjoy the film!

Allison Pittel as Selena was the best aspect!

I'm baffled someone said as I was walking in the hallway afterwards best thing since Avengers:Endgame that is nuts; there's no way that's possible! The horror and comedy was delightful along with average directing/budget was beyond cheesy.

I enjoyed a fair amount regardless of anything, surely glad I work at a theater and used employee method so this was free thankfully. For a horror story based on Mickey Mouse this was kinda cool I wonder how the demon creature was created David Howard Thornton was genius as Willie Steamboat. Gruesome madness, beautiful women, fairly comedic, and good entertainment for what it is definitely doesn't deserve the poor ratings but nothing special either.

About what you would expect

Screamboat is the worst one of these parody movies I've seen. As always with these movies the acting is horrible. The story makes no sense, but for some reason the gore is always actually pretty decent and realistic looking, with that being said it had some moments where I chuckled but other than that, there is not much redeeming about this film.
