Why Jay Duplass Returned to Directing After 14 Years with ‘The Baltimorons’
Image
When Joel Coen went solo he co-wrote “The Tragedy of Macbeth” with his wife Frances McDormand. When Ethan Coen went solo he co-wrote “Drive-Away Dolls” and “Honey Don’t” with his wife Tricia Cooke. When Josh Safdie went solo he co-wrote “Marty Supreme” with Ronald Bronstein. (Benny wrote his solo movie “The Smashing Machine” by himself.) And when Jay Duplass went solo he co-wrote the romantic comedy “The Baltimorons” with new writing partner Michael Strassner, who stars in this Baltimore Christmas fable inspired by the comic’s own story. The movie took home the audience award at SXSW.

It’s been 14 years since Jay and Mark Duplass directed an original movie together. They still produce together (“Togetherness”) and act in various projects, including in Jay’s case, “Transparent,” “Dying for Sex,” and “Industry.” But Jay has been itching to get back into the director’s chair — and Mark hasn’t.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Jay Duplass Join Amazon YA Series ‘Sterling Point’
Image
Both Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Jay Duplass have been cast in Megan Park’s upcoming Amazon Prime Video series “Sterling Point,” Variety has learned.

The young adult show was originally announced in January. Morgan and Duplass will appear in recurring roles as Joe and Steven respectively. They will appear alongside previously announced cast members Ella Rubin, Amélie Elisabeth Hoeferle, Daniel Quinn-Toye, Jacob Whiteduck-Lavoie, Bo Bragason, and Keen Ruffalo.

Jay and Mark Duplass on Competing at Emmys and Playing Against Their Good Guy Personas in ‘Dying for Sex’ and ‘Good American Family’
Image
Mark Duplass says he has come up with a “dream moment” for this year’s Emmy Awards — and it sounds more like a nightmare. The idea is that both he and his brother Jay are nominated in the category of outstanding supporting actor in a limited series or TV movie — Mark for “Good American Family,” Jay for “Dying for Sex.”

“We’re at the awards ceremony, sitting next to each other, and we’re both nervous as hell,” Mark says. “And they say, ‘The winner is….mppphhh Duplass!’ I just hear ‘Duplass’ and I run up there and have a full-on ‘Zoolander’ moment where I thank Jay profusely for taking the back seat to me on this one and don’t realize that it was him that won the award. That would be my dream.”

It’s a scene straight out of a Duplass brothers movie, one that makes Mark laugh and Jay cringe.

Jay Duplass on Directing ‘The Baltimorons’ Without Brother Mark, Their ‘Conscious Uncoupling’ and the Film’s Pandemic Origins
Image
Jay Duplass couldn’t help himself.

The 52-year-old New Orleans native — best known for his creative collaborations with his younger brother Mark and acting roles in Amazon’s “Transparent” and FX’s “Dying for Sex” — had been working on a script for a film with a bigger budget and scope than the low-budget comedies that put his and his sibling’s names on the map. Then he connected with Michael Strassner, an actor-comedian he discovered via his comic Instagram videos, and the creative dominoes fell. In short order, he found himself braving the December cold in Maryland directing “The Baltimorons,” about a six-months-sober improv comedian (Strassner), who cracks a tooth on Christmas Eve and spontaneously embarks on a night of adventure and unexpected romance with his dentist (Liz Larsen).

“I felt tremendous untapped potential energy,” Duplass told the audience at the Fremont Theater on Sunday, where he was honored with...

‘The Baltimorons’ Review: Jay Duplass’ May-December Romance Is a Stealth Charmer With a Low-Key ‘After Hours’ Vibe
Image
After co-directing a handful of no-frills indies with his brother Mark and working for more than a decade in episodic television, Jay Duplass makes an agreeably unassuming solo feature debut behind the camera with The Baltimorons. Marbled with a tender vein of melancholy alongside its unforced comedy, the film follows a thirtysomething, recently sober ex-improv comic who breaks a tooth and requires urgent dental care on Christmas Eve, spawning an unlikely romance. It’s the kind of quirky concept that could easily have been cringe material, but the actors give it a lived-in naturalism that sneaks up on you.

Aside from his acting and producing credits, Duplass’ regular gig since 2015 has been directing TV episodes, notably on Togetherness, Search Party, and most recently, Somebody Somewhere. (I will never stop being mad about that consistently great show getting zero Emmy attention.) Just as Somebody Somewhere was molded with piercing character insight around its star,...

Amanda Peet Hadn’t Starred in a Movie for a Decade — Until a Fellow Actor Wrote Her an Irresistible Role
Image
Talk about life imitating art, imitating life. About a month ago, Amanda Peet told IndieWire during a recent interview, something funny and mortifying happened to her at the grocery store in front of her two teenage daughters. Someone recognized the actress. Well, sort of. They said hello, and complimented her on her work. And then it became clear that this person “recognized” her as Lake Bell, and complimented her on Lake Bell’s work.

This has happened before. It’s happened enough, in fact, that Peet encouraged her “Fantasy Life” filmmaker and co-star Matthew Shear to include it in his feature directorial debut, in which Peet plays an actress who, yup, often gets mistaken for Lake Bell. It’s funny, and it’s a little sad, and it’s incredibly honest, and it speaks to the spirit in which Shear, a Noah Baumbach regular and former star of the series “The Alienist,...

'Poker Face' Season 2 Reveals First Look, Full Cast List Ahead of Spring Release
Image
Natasha Lyonne and Rian Johnson's hit streaming series, Poker Face, is set to return this year. And, well? The list of people they've finagled to guest star in Season 2 is actually unhinged. Like, the list of people who are going to be on this show is truly outrageous and unfathomable to someone like me, a person who does not cast television shows. But if I did? And I managed to pull this off? I'd be screaming it from the rooftop, folks. Because this cast list? It's truly the best of the best of the funniest, most talented people currently working in Hollywood.

And it seems that Lyonne and Johnson recognize that, sending along a note with the press release teasing the series' forthcoming slate of episodes. And though we don't know the exact premiere date yet — all it says is "Spring 2025" — we do know the 12, 60-minute-long episodes will feature Many very,...

Mark Duplass Brought His Indie Scrappiness to LA Wildfire Relief Efforts – and It’s Working
Image
After watching Los Angeles become engulfed in flame over the last three weeks, Mark Duplass could not stand idly by. The “Morning Show” actor and renowned indie producer got to work quickly, promoting adoption applications for local animal shelters, underfunded GoFundMe’s and insurance tips for people who had lost everything across his personal social media accounts.

After a couple days, Duplass realized he could reach higher. He called out to Google on his Instagram, asking for Chromebooks to be donated to Los Angeles school districts forced to return to remote learning. He asked Nintendo to donate Switches to kids who lost theirs to the fires. He even called out Airbnb for making the process to seek temporary housing increasingly difficult for displaced residents.

Reflecting on his efforts, Duplass told TheWrap that they would never have been possible without the countless volunteers he’s worked with along the way.

Whatever Happened To The Cast Of The League?
Image
Created by Jeff & Jackie Schaffer, one of FX's most popular comedy series was "The League," which ran for seven seasons from 2009 to 2015. The raucous sitcom follows a group of friends in Chicago who run a highly competitive fantasy football league every year, creating their own challenges, rewards, and penalties. Along the way, the ensemble endures their own hilarious highs and lows involving romance and family life in between planning their fantasy teams. Throughout the show's run, the group is joined by several memorable guest stars and recurring characters, including the occasional real-life football player getting in on the fun.

Led by a solid ensemble cast of talented comedians, "The League" introduced beloved, crass characters framed against the backdrop of fantasy sports. Since the show's ending in 2015, many of the cast members have gone on to continue their film and television careers, while others haven't reached the same level of success.

Mark Duplass Used the Independent Film Model to Make the Show ‘Penelope’ on Netflix. Can That Work for Others?
Image
The new series “Penelope,” premiering Tuesday on Netflix, opens with a 16-year-old girl dancing at an outdoor silent disco. Feeling out of place, she tries to push past the awkwardness of dancing in a room with her summer camp peers. But Penelope’s attentions always drift to the surrounding wilderness.

It’s a quieter start than the typical show premiering on the streaming home of the black comedy-thriller “Baby Reindeer,” but its impact lingers. And creators Mark Duplass and Mel Eslyn hope their thought-provoking teen drama can show the industry that middle-budget television still has a place in an IP-ridden ecosystem — even if creators have to first fund the projects on their own.

“This is the project that I felt most passionately needed to be made and that could be, maybe, my legacy,” Duplass told TheWrap. “So while it was way more expensive than anything I’ve self-financed, and [it was] f...

The series is led by Megan Stott (“Little Fires Everywhere”), who plays the title role. Per the official logline, Penelope is “a 16-year-old girl who, feeling deeply out of place in her contemporary surroundings, leaves her life and family behind and treks into the wilds of Washington State. As she establishes an alternative life for herself, survivalism and coming-of-age coalesce in this poignant journey toward self-discovery.”

Alongside Stott, the cast includes Austin Abrams and Krisha Fairchild (“Krisha”).

Mark Duplass co-created the series with showrunner Mel Eslyn (“Biosphere”), president of Duplass Brothers Productions, which independently financed “Penelope” before taking it to Netflix. The project is the flagship of their new focus on indie television in response to the decline of Peak TV.

Image
This week’s 20 Questions on Deadline guest is Mark Duplass.

Fans of The Morning Show will be delighted to hear Duplass confirm his return “in some shape or form” for the upcoming Season 4, as put-upon producer Chip Black. Duplass also reveals that Season 4 will begin shooting a month from now.

With Season 3 showrunner Charlotte Stoudt in place once again for Season 4, how the upcoming election will be worked into the show remains to be seen. Previous seasons included rewrites to incorporate the pandemic and the #MeToo movement. Shooting this summer, Season 4 is slated to air sometime next year.

“My assumption is that we’re going to airing the show well after that election has happened,” Duplass said. “So my instinct is that while The Morning Show does chase current events, and we have historically, in the past, with the #MeToo movement and Covid, and everything that happened with women’s...

Independent TV Pilots Are Having A Moment
Image
Can television have its own New Hollywood moment?

Much like movies such as Bonnie and Clyde, The Graduate, Rosemary’s Baby and Easy Rider took the late 1960s by storm, a group of writers and directors are hoping that their own independent TV projects can break through and find their way to the small screen amidst the current Hollywood contraction.

After a number of web series such as Issa Rae’s The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl, Broad City and High Maintenance were turned into TV series over the past decade, writers and directors hoped that this would lead to more.

However, the rise of streaming originals saw the business go the other way, with incredibly expensive dramas and comedies, often led by movie stars, taking over. This trend is now waning and a new generation of creators hopes that cost-conscious companies will now pay more attention to their projects instead.

What Is Indie TV? How Mark Duplass Is Using His ‘Morning Show’ Paychecks to Launch a New Model for the Small Screen
Image
Mark Duplass was feeling insecure.

At one point in his career, he would get greenlight after greenlight for the TV projects he pitched on behalf of Duplass Brothers Productions, the beloved indie banner he founded with Jay Duplass in the late ’90s, when the duo was focused on feature films. But recently, he and company president Mel Eslyn noticed a problem.

“All the executives who used to buy all of our stuff before we could even open our mouths were passing,” he says. “We were like, ‘Have we lost it?’ And then we started talking to all of our friends. They were like, ‘It’s not you. It’s us too.’ We started sharing these war stories.”

The war they spoke of was the decline of Peak TV. For nearly a decade, Hollywood was producing and distributing more television than ever before, thanks to the exponential growth of the streaming economy.

Percy Jackson's Hades Actor Creates A Sad Reunion For Critically Acclaimed War Drama From Last Year

Warning! This article contains minor spoilers for Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1, episode 7!

Jay Duplass and Lance Reddick, who both appear on Percy Jackson and the Olympians, previously starred together in the 2023 movie The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, showcasing their excellent chemistry. The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, the final film directed by William Friedkin, received critical acclaim with a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes, solidifying the talent of Duplass and Reddick. Unfortunately, Reddick's passing marks the end of their collaborations, making Percy Jackson their final project together, adding a sense of nostalgia to their on-screen reunion.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ Hades actor, Jay Duplass, previously worked with another major Greek god star from the show, creating a subtle reunion for a 2023 military drama movie. Percy Jackson season 1’s cast includes major guest stars for some of its most important roles, with the show recruiting several Hollywood veterans for its Greek gods and mythological creatures.

Melanie Lynskey Says “It Was So Painful” Growing Apart From Friend and Former Co-Star Kate Winslet
Image
Melanie Lynskey is opening up about drifting apart from her once-close friend and Heavenly Creatures co-star Kate Winslet.

While speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast Thursday about the nature of the industry and how people “move on” following projects, the Yellowjackets actress explained that “When I lost touch with Kate, it was more heartbreaking than some breakups that I’ve had.

“It was so painful because it wasn’t like anything happened, it’s just she became a gigantic international movie star and she didn’t have a lot of time,” she added. “I wouldn’t hear from her, you know, and it just sort of like gradually happened, and it happens in relationships. People kind of drift apart, but it was so painful for me.”

But before their bond even existed and before she had the role of Pauline Parker in the Oscar-nominated film, Lynskey...

Image
Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret., Judy Blume's iconic 1970 coming-of-age-novel, is getting a big-screen adaptation, and its cast is a blend of newcomers and award-winning established talent. The book centers around Margaret Simon, who moves from New York City to New Jersey with her Christian mother and Jewish father. Margaret grapples with her religious identity as she adjusts to life in the suburbs. She befriends her neighbor, Nancy Wheeler, and with some other girlfriends, they create a club called the Pre-Teen Sensations, bonding over desires of getting their first period and having bigger breasts. The novel was praised for its progressive discussions on puberty and religion.

It's these unapologetic explorations of topics previously considered taboo in middle-grade literature that has given Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret. its enduring legacy. Because this book has such a special place in readers' lives, casting the film adaptation is all the more important.
