In a small taiga town, a little girl from a dysfunctional family disappears. Investigator Demidov senses something is wrong and plunges headlong into the investigation. He also has a tense situation at home: both daughters are going through a difficult teenage period and dislike their father's new wife.

Kristya is found dead. Demidov tries to get the truth from her younger brother and suddenly plunges into painful memories of his childhood, and Zimin suspects he has cancer.

Demidov suspects the local blessed Tabarchuk of involvement in the death of the girl. Demidov's wife notices that there is chemistry between her husband and criminologist Lida, but Demidov explains this by close friendship. Demidov's daughters run away to the forest at night "to hunt."

After the discovery of the body of another dead girl, it becomes clear that these are serial murders. Zimin suspects his wife of crimes, but despite this, he tries to save her. Demidov suffers from memory lapses.

Demidov realizes that the criminal is covering his tracks too cleanly, and begins to suspect Lida. Zimina decides to leave home and return to her past life, but there is no place for her there either. Demidov plunges deeper into the investigation, moving away from his wife and daughters.

Demidov is being rushed to provide evidence to accuse Tabarchuk, but he now believes that Tabarchuk is innocent. Suddenly, Demidov begins to doubt himself, as he cannot explain his memory lapses. Aglaya is trying to establish contact with her husband, who has completely abandoned his family.

The body of the third victim is found in the taiga. Demidov plunges into the depths of his subconscious. The evidence is against him, is he the killer? Malik explains himself to Katya, and she unexpectedly suggests that he leave together.

It seems that the killer left no chance for anyone. Everyone is confused, confused, and trying to figure out how they could have overlooked it. However, Demidov still finds the strength and, catching on to a small discrepancy, suddenly realizes who the real killer is.
