As Debate Over TikTok’s Future Continues To Swirl, Company Reassures Advertisers, “We Are Here”
Image
TikTok execs sought to assure advertisers at a NewFronts presentation Tuesday that their platform is safe and trustworthy, and backed by an open-ended financial commitment..

“The one thing I really want to say, and I want to say this very clearly, and I want to say this from my heart: TikTok is here. We are here,” declared Khartoon Weiss, who was promoted this year to head of North American ad sales. “We are absolutely confident in our platform and confident in the future of this platform. So we’re going to continue to invest in it. There’s a lot that’s going to come at you.”

While it is used monthly by 170 million Americans and continues to gain momentum as an ad vehicle, TikTok faces an uncertain ownership future amid scrutiny of its parent company, China-based ByteDance. After a court ruling forcing the divestiture of the U.S. assets...

Image
Monument Releasing has acquired Eugene Kotlyarenko’s “The Code,” and is planning a theatrical release in the English-speaking world. The film premiered at the Fantasia Intl. Film Festival in Montreal and has gone on to have a strong festival run.

“The Code” will be opening at the Roxy Cinema in New York on April 23, and will be followed by a theatrical run at the Lumiere Cinema May 9 in Los Angeles. Key additional cities include Miami, Montreal, Toronto and San Francisco, with more to be added.

“The Code” is an absurd, high-concept comedy, following a sexless couple, paranoid about the status of their relationship, who embrace surveillance, spying and performance as a means to fall in love again.

The film stars Dasha Nekrasova, Peter Vack, Ivy Wolk (“Anora”) and Vish Velandy (“Wobble Palace”).

It was produced by Spacemaker Productions and lensed by Bart Cortright.

Kotlyarenko’s debut features, “0s & 1s” and “Skydiver,...

‘We Just Made It Up!’: Robert Randolph Announces Wild-Style Solo Album
Image
Talking with Rolling Stone last year, Robert Randolph recalled the unusual complaint he received when he was working on a new album in LA. Apparently, the bass amplifier he and producer Shooter Jennings had placed in a hallway was too loud, and a couple of people in the building — T Bone Burnett and Robbie Robertson — told a receptionist it was too loud. As Randolph said, Robertson walked into the studio and said, “Oh, that’s you down here? You guys are getting funky in here.”

Robertson, who passed away last year,...

'Anime Saved My Life': 25 Years Later, One Piece Star Opens Up on 'Biggest Turning Point'
Image
Over 25 years ago, professional vocalist Hiroshi Kitadani entered the anime scene by performing One Piece's Season 1 opening theme song -- a track now known and loved by anime fans worldwide. In addition to helping him attract a new audience, Kitadani also credits One Piece, and anime as a whole, for "saving his life" during a low point in his career.

Hiroshi Kitadani made his music industry debut in 1994 as a member of the popular three-member band, 'Stagger.' In a recent interview conducted by Mantan Web, Kitadani recounted how, after performing with the group for several years, he was abruptly dismissed. "...After about four years, I was notified that I was no longer needed, and I was scared that this was the end of it." However, in 1999, Kitadani landed the opportunity to perform One Piece's now-iconic opening theme song, "We Are," which he describes as the single "biggest turning point" of his life.

Oasis Pours It Out for One Piece in Freshly Squeezed Anime Collaboration Reveal
Image
Soft drink brand Oasis has announced a new collaboration with One Piece, turning its popular fruit-flavored drinks into the Straw Hat crew members just in time for spring.

Oasis also ran a successful collaboration last year with Naruto Shippuden, now looking to follow it up with another successful crossover by turning its fruit characters into some of the most popular Straw Hat Pirates. In celebration of the limited-edition drinks, Oasis has released an animated commercial that utilizes the first opening of One Piece, "We Are," and adds some fun Oasis-flavored animation to it, transforming all the major characters into some variety of fruit.

One Piece & Oasis Cross Over for New Limited-Edition Fruity Release

Notably, despite showcasing the entire Thousand Sunny crew during the commercial, the final shot featuring the available drinks only shows four, with a fifth can hidden and marked as "available soon." While some of the fruit choices aren't entirely clear,...

2026 Grammy predictions: Album of the Year
Image
For several years, the nominees for Album of the Year were decided by secretive nomination review committees, but the Recording Academy got rid of most of those in 2021 after The Weeknd's notorious shutout, so now the decisions are made entirely by members at large. Scroll down for our latest odds, which are based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. Those odds are constantly changing, so we'll be updating this list throughout the season.

SEEGrammy Album of the Year: All the Winners in Grammy Awards History

In 2022, the first year without the committees, the Grammys expanded Album of the Year to 10 nominations (though that has since been contracted back to eight). The 2022 winner ended up being We Are by Jon Batiste, which was a surprise against higher-profile hits. So even without the committees to uplift underdog recordings, the academy's 13,000 voters don't necessarily default to the most popular nominee.

Crowd Network raises a glass to BrewDog partnership
Image
Crowd Network (Crowd), one of Europe’s fastest growing independent podcast networks, has partnered with Britain’s biggest independent brewer, BrewDog.

The BrewDog sponsorship has been passed between some of Crowd’s most popular podcasts, including Fc Bullard, Joe’s Marler’s Things People Do, Geraint Thomas Cycling Club, Beef’s Golf Club, and For The Love Of Rugby.

For the partnership, Crowd and BrewDog assigned each podcast a different BrewDog beer, with hosts drinking them in podcast episodes, and beer cans and packs decorating recording spaces. The chosen beverages reflect each podcast’s hosts and content — BrewDog’s Alcohol-Free Punk Af paired with Geraint Thomas Cycling Club during Dry January, as host Geraint Thomas is sober while in training.

The collaboration supports Crowd’s multichannel approach by facilitating extra content opportunities, like Jimmy Bullard’s appearance on Joe Marler’s Things People Do to progress the sponsorship. Hosts worked...

Jon Batiste on His Super Bowl Performance and How Music Can Transcend America’s Divide
Image
When Jon Batiste performed the national anthem in front of millions of Americans watching the Super Bowl Lix broadcast from New Orleans’ Superdome, he paid homage to generations both past and present on the hallowed stage.

For the first time in the NFL’s championship history, Batiste weaved a sample into his rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner”: the Triggerman beat, first taken as a loop from a 1986 song by the Showboys and subsequently used on decades of hip-hop, bounce, and dance music, from Juvenile’s “Back Dat Azz Up” to Beyoncé’s Renaissance.

2025 Grammy predictions: Album of the Year

The Grammys are handed out every year by the Recording Academy, an organization composed of music professionals representing different genres across the industry. For multiple years their nominations for Album of the Year were decided by clandestine nomination review committees, but the academy got rid of most of those in 2021, so now the decisions are made entirely by members at large. Destruction Announce New Album, Unleash Eponymous Single “Destruction”: Stream
Image
Destruction have announced their 16th studio album, Birth of Malice, arriving March 7th via Nuclear Blast Records. The video for the second single, the eponymous track “Destruction,” can be streamed now.

Releasing a self-titled song this deep into their career is a bold move, but the German thrash vets pull it off, delivering a proper anthem that captures the essence of the band, its fans, and its legacy: “We are Destruction!” This is full-bore thrash with a punkish snarl and a raw, live-sound production — complemented by some excellent concert footage of the band and its rabid fanbase in the accompanying video.

“The crushing song ‘Destruction’ is the perfect opener for this album: It builds a bridge between our old-school sound and riffing, including song title phrases from classic Destruction tracks and more shredding and melodic twin lead guitars that will pinch your brain with its razorsharp leads!” enthused the band via a press release.

One Piece Day'24 Sails Into the Anime's 25th Anniversary
Image
Little can be said about One Piece that hasn't been said before. Luffy will be the King of the Pirates, the series is the biggest comic of all time , and the One Piece is real (according to certain sources). It's one of the most watched TV shows around the world and even in the anime's 25th year (27th for the manga!), Eiichiro Oda's odyssey is only gaining more wind in its sails. One Piece Day’24 made the 25th anniversary of the anime the centerpiece of the celebrations, as well as the manga's outgoing Egghead Island Arc. Crunchyroll News was able to climb the waterfall to the Grand Line and attend the second day of the weekend celebrations. Dory and Broggy welcomed people to the show floor We Are On A Cruise! As with all One Piece events, the day started with Hiroshi Kitadani performing "We Are!" at the opening ceremony.

15 Best One Piece Episodes Ranked
Image
Episode 1015 celebrates with Luffy's rise to prominence and dramatically poignant entrance to the battle against Big Mom and Kaido. Episode 37 is dark & emotional with Luffy supporting Nami in rebellious fight against Arlong. Episode 312's Going Merry sacrifice represents the end of innocence, foreshadowing Marineford tragedy.

Given that One Piece has 1000+ episodes and has become one of the most well-known and adored anime series in the world over the course of over two decades, it undoubtedly has a fair proportion of episodes that are significantly better than the others. One Piece's single ongoing storyline makes it a bit harder to highlight outstanding episodes, but there are a few that stick in fans' memories and represent the pirate adventure story at its best.

Unsurprisingly, many of these episodes feature fights against the Straw Hats' most formidable foes, but others have simply some of the most dramatic or epic moments in the series.

Do you need critics on your side in order to win Grammys?
Image
How do we know what music is actually good? Many fans look to critics. Sure, some might label music journalism as irrelevant in assigning value to art, but the reality is, critics do at least partly contribute to the consensus on the quality of music. That’s why, whether it is during a civilized conversation or the most rabid Twitter stan war, an album’s Metacritic score typically comes up. So award show voters must take those top albums more into consideration than others, right? To be a big awards player, doesn’t your album need to be somewhat acclaimed?

Let’s take a look at the past three Grammy ceremonies as examples. Since these are ceremonies with no nomination review committees involved, the results are a more accurate, unfiltered reflection of what voters think. According to Metacritic, anything below 81 is not “universally acclaimed,” so that’s how I’ll sort it out.

The Weirdest Changes in One Piece's 4Kids English Dub
Image
While fans of One Piece who don't enjoy reading subtitles now have the excellent Funimation Dub to enjoy, it wasn't always like this. When the series was initially brought to the West, it was dubbed by the infamous 4Kids Entertainment.

The 4Kids English Dub of One Piece is notorious for the strange decisions made to censor the series. The changes made in translation were largely brought about by a desire to target the series toward a younger demographic than the series was written for; while some of these edits are understandable with this in mind, such as limiting the amount of blood and sexuality, others are just plain weird.

4Kids Removed All the Guns From One Piece Close

Guns are a common weapon of choice in One Piece, especially in the early arcs of the series that were dubbed by 4Kids. However, 4Kids refused to allow any realistic depictions of firearms to be shown.

My Hero Academia 421 Is An Underwhelming Start to the Final Stretch
Image
The following contains major spoilers for My Hero Academia Chapter 421, "We Are Here" by Horikoshi Kohei, Caleb Cook and John Hunt, available now in English from Viz Media.

Since My Hero Academias final arc began in 2021, Horikoshi Kohei has been seamlessly blending stunning art, rich character development, and conclusions while resolving several plot threads introduced over his decade-long epic. The rate of consistent quality all but proves that every aspect of this incredible arc has been meticulously planned out. While this approach has merit, it occasionally results in chapters that feel mandated rather than a natural progression of ongoing events. Chapter 422 is one such minor misstep.

In My Hero Academia Chapter 421, We Are Here, most of Class 1-a return to the site of Dekus battle with All For One. One by one, each character arrives through the Warp Gate, and their presence suggests that they feel just as responsible for...

Jon Batiste Applauds Beyoncé for Breaking Down Music Barriers With Her Country Album
Image
Jon Batiste is giving high praise to Beyoncé, with whom he collaborated on a new country music album, Cowboy Carter.

Beyoncé dropped the 27-track album Friday, but she made history last month with the release of single “Texas Hold ‘Em,” which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard‘s Hot Country Songs chart. That made her the first Black woman to accomplish such a feat, according to Billboard.

Batiste, who was one of several collaborators on Cowboy Carter, praised the Grammy-winning singer for her role in breaking down barriers across music genres.

“This is the moment yall, where we dismantle the genre machine,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday.

He added: “Quincy Jones told me, as he also wrote in his forward to my We Are album, ‘it’s up to you to de categorize American music!! ,’ which is what Duke Ellington told him. I really believe that is our generations role,...

“The start of my rags-to-riches story”: One Piece Saved Hiroshi Kitadani’s Career After His Record Company Saw No Future in Him
Image
Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece has had many opening theme songs that have helped the series grow hugely. But none of the theme songs compare to the first one that introduced the One Piece story to the world. The name of the song is “We Are!” It was sung by Hiroshi Kitadani, and composed by Kohei Tanaka with lyrics by Shoko Fujibayashi.

One Piece

The song marked the beginning of the East Blue Saga in One Piece and also brought a lot of fame and popularity to the singer Kitadani. And now Kitadani has returned to the One Piece world after almost 25 years with another banger for the Egghead Island arc.

The name of the theme song is “Uuuuus!” and it has also been composed by Kohei Tanaka with lyrics by Shoko Fujibayashi. According to Kitadani, One Piece saved his career by giving him a chance to sing the opening...

Could Jacob Collier ambush the Grammys again with ‘Djesse Vol. 4’?
Image
The 29-year-old British star Jacob Collier has risen to fame from YouTube all the way to the Grammys, earning six trophies throughout his career. While Collier was a Grammy favorite from his first album, “Djesse Vol. 3” was the one to put him on the radar for a lot of folks, earning three Grammy noms including for Album of the Year. That nomination was quite unexpected and launched Collier to a lot more fame, especially as his fusion of jazz/R&b/pop is quite unique and not what many would expect to cross over to the Grammy mainstream. Despite not being a huge commercial artist, Collier might be looking at his biggest year ever at the Grammys with his new album, “Djesse Vol. 4.” But just how much recognition will Collier get?

Onir, Director of BFI Flare Selection ‘Pine Cone,’ Talks LGBTQ Cinema in India: ‘The Queer Gaze Is Missing’ (Exclusive)
Image
Onir, one of a handful of out and proud Indian filmmakers, is speaking out about the current scenario for LGBTQ filmmakers in the country.

“There are a lot of non-Indian queer films and series available on streaming and also a lot of queer short films and reel videos being made across the country. Having said that, I feel the mainstream industry and streaming platforms when it comes to queer content are mostly still taking baby steps, and also looking at our stories from a very heteronormative gaze,” Onir told Variety.

“The queer gaze is largely missing. What is disappointing is that it’s largely about a tick mark of having done the right thing — right from actors to platforms and studios that use the phrase ‘but we are already doing one queer story.’ I don’t understand what that means. We are not one homogeneous story, we have many stories.

One Major Element Of Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender Will Distract All The Hardcore Fans
Image
Live-action remakes of beloved animated titles are nothing new and with each new remake comes the endless debate of how closely fans want the new show to follow the original, versus how much of a new thing it should be. The best remakes end up being more like rebuilds, taking from the original, adding to it, and overall making something that feels recognizable, but fresh. Shows like "Watchmen," "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" and the "Rebuild of Evangelion" movies succeed at this.

Even the "One Piece" live-action show managed to break the curse and deliver a great live-action anime remake. That show found the right balance of old and new by essentially throwing away the individual episode stories, instead reworking important character arcs into new episodes that followed the overall structure of the original series but not their scripts. It nodded at the source material while doing something new.

This brings...

Image
Jon Batiste, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, which was recorded in front of an audience of film students at Chapman University, is a singer, songwriter, composer, multi-instrumentalist, bandleader and actor. At just 37, he has already won five Grammys — including, in 2022, album of the year, for We Are — and also has to his name an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award and a BAFTA Award, all for the score of the 2020 film Soul. He is currently nominated for the best original song Oscar for his tune “It Never Went Away,” which is featured in Matthew Heineman’s Netflix documentary feature American Symphony, about the best of times and the worst of times in the life of Batiste and his wife, Suleika Jaouad.

Image

2024 Grammy predictions: Album of the Year
Image
The Grammys are presented every year by the Recording Academy, an organization composed of music insiders from across the industry. For years their nominations for Album of the Year were decided by secret nomination review committees, but the academy eliminated almost all of those in 2021, so now the decisions are made entirely by members at large without an intermediary to override their choices. Scroll down for our latest racetrack odds, which are based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. Those odds are constantly changing, so we’ll be updating this list throughout the season.

SEEGrammy Album of the Year: All the Winners in Grammy Awards History

Not everyone in the industry regards the Grammys fondly, though. At the 2021 awards, for instance, The Weeknd didn’t get a single nomination despite an acclaimed album (“After Hours”) and a song (“Blinding Lights”) so popular that Billboard ranked it as their...

‘The Greatest Night In Pop’ Recap/Review: What Happens In The Netflix’s Documentary?
Image
Chronicling what should probably be considered the Avengers Assemble of the rock music world, Netflix’s latest musical documentary, The Greatest Night in Pop, lays out everything that went behind the scenes of the 1985 single We Are the World. It is certainly one of the most popular songs in the history of music, mainly because of its universal appeal and the people that are associated with it. You don’t get names like Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Lionel Richie, Quincy Jones, Harry Belafonte, Kenny Rogers, Bob Dylan, and Stevie Wonder working together to create one single piece of art every day. It is a once-in-a-lifetime thing, and Netflix makes sure that the audience gets to see it that way only.

What Happens In The Documentary?

The Greatest Night in Pop takes us back to one cold winter night in January 1985, where all the shining stars of the musical world gathered together in the A&m Studios,...

Grammys dilemma: Will Taylor Swift win another controversial Album of the Year title?
Image
The biggest Grammy Award of the night is Album of the Year, meant to honor complete pieces of work that defined the music scene and impacted the culture throughout the eligibility period. The award has gone to some of the most influential records of all time, including The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and Adele’s “21.” While some years are more uncertain than others, this year the category seems to be a two-horse race, although a few other players might sneak their way through as well.

The frontrunners here are Taylor Swift’s “Midnights” and Sza’s “Sos.” Both records are massive commercial successes, finishing 2023 as the second and third biggest albums of the year, respectively. Both have also managed to be career peaks for these already uber-popular stars.

In Sza’s case, “Sos” was her sophomore album and served as proof that...
