Non-stop action

What The Shadow Strays lacks in coherence, depth and story is made up by the relentless, almost non-stop, action. There's plenty of blood squirting out of bodies, impossible fight scenes wrapped up in a rollercoaster of guns, swords and an occasional explosion.

If you desire intellectual stimulation, look elsewhere. The characters are two-dimensional, singularly focused on... in fact, I don't think we were even introduced to the characters' motivations. I'd go as far to suggest that the dialogue wasn't necessary, subtitles in my case as it is a non-English film.

Anyway, if a hypnotic opera of blood and action will help you relax, then sit back and enjoy.

Great movie that suffers from a less good final act.

Let me just say the movie is worth a watch for sure. It has great fight scenes and a cliche but serviceable plot. My main issue with this movie is the finale and just how silly it gets. There is a big shootout in the movie that is just horribly done and every sequence that involves a gun is badly done. There is not consistency or any realism to it. Now don't get me wrong I'm not looking for any realism in this movie but at some point it just starts to get jarring. It also drags on for way to long, there is another sequence after the main finale that should just have been cut. It's another one of those movie that suffers from a horrible final act. Overall it's a great first time watch but I personally wouldn't rewtach. The Night Comes for Us is the better movie for sure.

Mostly Good Despite an Unfocused Finale

It's a cool action movie with some particularly graphic violence to accompany the well-choreographed action scenes. And by graphic violence, I mean some of the killings of standard action-movie henchmen reach body-horror levels of brutality. The story is reasonably straightforward: an elite assassin gets suspended from active duty after fumbling a mission. She soon finds new purpose in protecting/avenging a local kid. Performances are good, there's lots of wild action and the story is familiar but compelling. Unfortunately it gets bogged down in an extraneous subplot at the start of the third act and said subplot subsumes the finale.

Ultra Intense Action

From the maker of The night comes for us , so that's what we need to expect .. Extreme action flick with fine edits and cinematography. Story line is basoc but if you need a fast paced action movie for the weekend this could be the choice only if you have a strong heart too for the gore and extreme scenes .

The movie could have been shorter but not a single boring moment as the movie is completely eventful.

Enjoy with a group who have similar tastes .

Delivers On Action, Falls Short On Drama

From the director of The Night Comes For Us & May the Devil Take You comes a vicious, violent & vengeful action thriller that delivers on the action front with its no-holds-barred approach yet is undermined by its needlessly overlong & half-baked story that actually could've done without a whole subplot. Within its bloated 145 mins runtime, there is a lean n mean 90 mins action film that would've sufficed.

Written & directed by Timo Tjahjanto (Killers & Headshot), The Shadow Strays concerns a young assassin who goes on a killing rampage to save a boy from a crime syndicate. Tjahjanto's direction is lot better than his writing, for the action set pieces & fight choreography are utterly impressive but the dramatic portion is weak, character bits lack depth, storytelling is mediocre, plus it piles up extra baggage for no reason.

The picture would've been thoroughly gripping if it was solely focused on a single tightly-knitted plot instead of branching out in multiple directions and didn't need to be as long as it turned out to be, for it unnecessarily complicated a simple, straightforward premise. Performances are fine when it comes to the physicality of the roles but isn't compelling on the emotional front. And the journey also gets repetitive after a while.

Overall, The Shadow Strays is packed with bloody, intense & gruesome scenes of carnage but there is also a much better film buried beneath all the insipid attempts at creating a sprawling crime drama at which it fails. The story is at its most gripping when it features our protagonist slice, dice, stab & slash her way through endless bodies and yet every time the film decides to take a breather, the interest fizzles out and it all comes to a standstill.

Too long, too girly, too over the top, too everything

It comes out of nowhere and it comes hard. Yes, the oft-cited comparison to 'The Night Comes For Us', also by director Timo Tjahjanto, is inevitable. And although attempts have obviously been made to adjust various settings differently, the direction remains the same and the director can't seem to get out of his skin. A web of brutal action scenes, perfectly choreographed, but with what feels like a forced plot glued together. The result is a film that the inclined viewer will certainly enjoy watching, but a rewatch is probably questionable. Despite the spectacular scenes, the film lacks that certain something, the cult factor. This may be due to the female cast, which is not exactly typical of the genre, or perhaps it is difficult to generate the aforementioned specifications at all given the number of films of this kind. The result is pure consumer goods, in a futile attempt to outdo its predecessors. It is questionable with regard to the created status of the audience, as a reflection of society in general, with this exuberant celebration of raw violence. The finale, in which two young women slaughter each other for no reason, is hard to watch. Again, the point about young women and girls being the protagonists of such a format is a difficult one. Even more brutal than the images, however, is the running time. Almost two and a half hours, without words. And no, that's an absolute turn-off, even with Wick, Raid and the like.

Action Packed 🔥👏

First of all I can't believe this is an Indonesia movie. This movie have amazingly done fight scenes for an Indonesia movie. Full of blood and gore scenes. I liked this movie very much the start to the end. Recently I lose interest in the middle of every movies that I watch but this movie kept my interest to the end. If you like action movie then this is for you. Some people hesitates because this is Indonesia movie don't do that just jump into it. You will like it for sure. Some scenes doesn't make sense but most of the action movies have scenes like that right. This is an awesome movie 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Good but not great

THE NIGHT COMES FOR US is one of my all-time favourite action movies, up there with the likes of the RAID films for its blistering choreography and relentless action. So when I heard Tjahjanto was making a follow-up I was intensely excited. I've watched it a couple of times and, although I do think this is a good film, I don't think it's quite up there with NIGHT. The plot is a virtual reprise of NIGHT's, except with a female lead instead, but the villains are less memorable and the action far less immersive; in fact, I think it peaks early on with the LADY SNOWBLOOD-inspired set-piece. The lead actress seems a bit inexperienced and is no Joe Taslim, while there are some slow spots unlike in NIGHT. Good but not great is how I would rate it.

Drags on with violence

"The Shadow Strays" is marked by its shocking gore and unrestrained, exaggerated violence, but it lacks depth. It follows the familiar trope of a skilled assassin who, weary of her secretive existence, risks everything to save someone she hardly knows.

Thirteen (Aurora Ribero), a 17-year-old assassin with a compassionate side, takes on a formidable Jakarta crime syndicate after they threaten her young neighbor, Monji (Ali Fikry). Monji's mother, Mirasti (Jesyca Marlein), was a sex worker exploited by the brutal pimp Haga (Agra Piliang), who is linked to the sleazy nightclub owner Ariel (Andri Mashadi) and his politically influential father, Soemitro (Arswendy Bening Swara). After Haga murders Monji's mother, Thirteen forms a bond with him and finds herself in a deadly game of cat and mouse with Haga, Ariel, and their associates. A series of gruesome and dramatic showdowns decimate their ranks.

The film drags on with relentless fighting and lacks the substance needed to unify its elements. While the cinematography is commendable, some early fight scenes are poorly executed, featuring adversaries lined up to be taken down one by one. This isn't the kind of movie I'll get excited for.

Wonderful fight choregraphy

Basic story. Awesome fights. Lead actress did a fantastic job. Fight choreography fast and furious. A must watch action movie for action lovers. For that budget the movie had rich look, needs to appreciate director and also cinematographer. Occasionally felt some moves are kind of seemed jarred because of camera angles but overall the action moves are fantastic. If you hate lots of bloodshed and gore watching this movie is bit difficult. Lead actress Aurora did justified the role. Along with the action she also able to act though not much needed for this role. Overall this movie doesn't disappoint you.

What a mindless mess

The rating for this show, 6.5 as of this writing, does not bode well for today's audience of cinema viewers. That so many people would think that this pos had an redeeming qualities is truly depressing. In any event, this not about the acumen of current movie goers, it's about a film that has hardly any redeeming qualities.

If you like over the top gore, violence, and stupidity, you might like this film. However, if you demand a bit more from your on screen viewing experience, you will be severely disappointed. It has no real plot, no character development, and very few credible fight scenes; which is somewhat surprising since that it's major focus.

I give it two stars instead of one because some of the cgi is very good.

THE PLOT ARMOR IS REAL AND SUPERHUMAN CAPABILITIES ??

If you looking for action which as the review says is over the top then you have come t the right place. The movie starts out very strong with good fight scenes, but anyone can call the plot from the very first 15 minutes about what will happen.

To me it seemed that multiple story lines were being tied together which made the movie 2 and half hours. You also get the sense of it trying to be like John Wick but not even John Wick has this much plot armor.

But basically, these Shadows have superhuman capabilities, from being able to crush a man's skull, dodging bullets and straight throwing tables threw the air.

Its worth the watch, but nothing to write home about.

Intense and hollow

Super gory Indonesian martial art action movie. The two main actresses are impressive. Quite intense.

The choreography of the fights is clearly below what was seen in The Raid. Much more suspension of belief is required here, which is quite a feat.

The story is on the same level of some of the Steven Seagal movies with some ninja style added to the recipe. That is not a compliment.

So, for its genre, that movie is fine but it falls short of The Raid.

Over the top if that's your thing

I'll say one thing about Indonesians, they're pretty bold for making a movie portraying their police and their politicians in such a bad light. It doesn't happen often in that part of the world.

It's alright but it doesn't know where to stop and loses all sense of proportion. The beginning is pretty captivating but then it loses focus and the length does not help at all. With the action intensifying to paroxystic heights I actually became bored of more things happening, more people appearing or fights going on and refusing to stop. Let's just say it doesn't go past the level of extreme gore action movie. It becomes ridiculous. Just die already. How many bullets and automatic weapons can you possibly dodge, how many blows and jabs can your body withstand? The villains are over the top and one note. I was somewhat invested till most anybody started dying and afterwards what was even the point? Let's just say I didn't find any closure or satisfaction in the end. They should've put a stop to it sooner.

One of the best action films in years

If it weren't for a meandering third act I would have easily given this film 10 stars.

I don't know how this film is rating so poorly. This film is one spectacular scene after another. The choreography unique, brutal and beautiful. Beyond the action we have a run of the mill revenge plot but it works. The character motivations are simple but extremely effective. The Silat is the best I've seen since the Raid films.

As I mentioned before the final act is underwhelming. The pacing in the first two acts was amazing but everything breaks down near the end. Still if you are looking for a straight forward action film look no further.

Yay for groovy violence. Nay for the story.

A 17 year old assassin named 13 fumbles on her mission and is rather saved by her instructor Umbra. 13 is sent back home while her instructor leaves for another mission. When a mother and her son are tormented by the local crime syndicate run by Ariel and his potential dad, 13 makes it her new mission to save the boy, after he gets kidnapped. 13 goes on a hunting spree without her usual weapons and just her skills, to get the boy back while the criminal gang are unaware who they are dealing with. Will 13 be able to save the boy and bring down hell on the baddies? Would her own shadow organization approve her actions, forms rest of the story.

This definitely falls under those Ninja films where blood turns into fountain and this time the beheadings to half sliced skulls are among the main attraction. To be fair, the film is unapologetic in it's love for the genre and starts off well with the mass assassination scene. I have started to not enjoy the fast camera movements during action sequences which tends to take away the focus from the action itself yet the proceedings remain engaging for an hour or so. The action blocks range from decent to good here. The writing however remained pretty basic and didn't offer anything new.

It is the second half, considering the film is 140 odd minutes long, the screenplay suffers with the flawed writing which compromises a lot for the action scenes. The antagonists are least interesting and one toned. There is a sub-plot involving the shadow organization and the ones who are deemed as deserters but that arrives a bit too late, taking away the focus from the main plot. Ofcourse that segment exists to justify the climax fight and create the build up for a sequel. The action blocks here became too ordinary compared to the earlier scenes. For a predictable story that relied heavily on gorey action scenes, the film only delivers partially.

PURE ACTION

Now this is awesome action movie. There was no such action movie since Raid 1-2. But it was more brutal then Raid's. This is not for those with weak stomachs , because here you have some scenes which can easily be part of some slasher horror. But don't get me wrong. This movie was not some meaningless violence flick. O no,he is much more then that. Storyline was very good for action movie and acting was great, especially from lead actors. Music is very good to .And I like this director,he is good. I like him since Macabre. He was mostly horror director, but then came When the Night Come For Us where he chainge his course and it was great turning. And now he gave us somenthing like this.

Action scenes are fantastic. Fighting coreography is great. One of the best fighting scenes since allways. So if you like action movies this is must watch for you!!!

Timo Does It Again

Timo Tjahjanto is one of the best martial arts action film makers of the last thirty (30) years, maybe ever. His Headshot is fantastic. The Night Comes For Us one of the best action film's of all time. The fight scene between Joe TaSlim and Iko Uwais in that is one of the best one v one fight scenes of all time. This film is in a tradition of great, violent, bloody Indonesian martial arts action films. An Assassin get embroiled in a local situation in Jakarta involving a young boy and an Indonesian drug cartel. The fight choreography is great. The acting is top notch. This is a highly watchable and superior action film.

Cinematic Catastrophe: A Mindless Gore Fest You Should Avoid at All Costs!

This movie is an unmitigated disaster. Seriously, approach it at your own risk. It started off with a glimmer of hope, tricking me into thinking I was in for a wild ride. How foolish I was! It quickly spiraled into a chaotic mess of mindless violence and absurdity. I've seen my fair share of action films, but this one takes the prize for sheer ridiculousness.

The plot? It's a complete void. It's like the writers tossed together a haphazard collection of ludicrous scenarios with zero thought for coherence. I was left scratching my head, asking, "What on earth is happening?" The scenarios were so far-fetched they made superhero movies look like hard-hitting documentaries. By the time the credits rolled, I felt like I had just burned over two hours of my life on a cinematic garbage fire.

It's nothing more than a relentless gore fest with a few scattered action sequences, and that's what 90% of the film focuses on. Normally, gore isn't everyone's thing-some people love it, others can't stand it-but even gore needs a coherent plot, which this film utterly lacks. Who in their right mind wants to watch a parade of bloodshed without a shred of substance? Sure, it tried to evoke the feel of "Ninja Assassin" or "Taken," but those films had strong plots and meaningful action. This one is just a mindless display of violence that'll put you to sleep.

I can't believe it even has a 6-star rating on IMDb. Are they paying for those ratings? It feels like a desperate attempt to secure another Netflix deal. Seriously, 2 hours and 25 minutes wasted on this junk is unforgivable. And the ending? It's a brutal slap in the face, a reminder that I squandered my time on this abomination. If you value your sanity, run far, far away from this one!

credit where credit is due

Credit where credit is due. Timo Tjahjanto is one of the most fearless and unpredictable auteurs on the planet, especially when it comes to violent revenge films. If he had only done one film in his entire career -- referring of course to THE NIGHT COMES FOR US -- he would still deserve mention in any film class on the planet. The opening arc here is original, not derivative. A trained female assassin makes a mistake on a mission, and is sidelined, told to take her meds. She forms an unexpected bond with a neighboring kid, and goes completely off-book, takes on the local mob. Not his best work, maybe, but it holds the attention and best of all makes you curious about what happens next. Recommended. ((Designated "IMDb Top Reviewer."
