Adkins great, script terrible

As usual, Scott Adkins is as good as it gets. But when you have a terrible script, two likable actors in the lead are wasted in silly, inane, predictable style. He is 10 times the actor and the martial artist that jvcd ever was. But for reasons I cannot explain, he gets stuck in b minus movies like these. Most of the movie takes place at the penthouse of a hotel room where they duck behind a sofa for cover,. Yes a sofa which has bullet holes through it as if a sniper couldn't just pepper it and kill everyone and end the movie.

Accident man is one of Atkins best including avengement. Stick with those, skip this..

Juvenile, at best. "Professional contractor" making the most asinine decisions

The script itself was not really all that bad. Scott Adkins always performs fight scenes very well, so there's that. However, this supposed professional contractor makes some of the most ridiculous decisions just to prolong the plot/movie that it's hardly relatable. Example: being pinned down for a long, long time by a sniper, supposedly unable to reach his weapon, with people getting shot the whole time, when I guess he gets tired of it and just goes for the gun... successfully, of course, then, within 3 seconds, sets up a shot and takes out the shooter in a building 1/2 a mile away. Really? There are several more "why in the heck don't you just..." scenarios like this that even a not so smart person would think of almost immediately. Like I said, the only redeeming value are the fight scenes. It's worth a watch if you can find absolutely nothing else to do.

A bit below average

Based on the actors you know what you are getting with Scott Adkins.

But I felt this was way below average and one of his worst.

Nothing to do with the acting which is always serviceable enough but the script was so bad I think they may be trying to be a parody of these sort of movies.

You have the standard assassin type and you can fill in the blanks it is paint by numbers, but some of the choices are insane, the handlers Alice Eve voice is jarring, she does not suit a small part or play it very convincingly.

You dont need an amazing or necessarily logical script but this one is seriously below average there was no need for some of the most stupid plot points.

Scott Adkins can act well enough for these sort of parts but never has a chance.

The action sequences are so boring with no interesting parts.

I think they should not have gone with Alice Eve and spent the money on a better script and director.

No redeeming features

The writing is just dreadful. From the cringeworthy opening conversation between Sam and Ken to the closing scene there isn't anything good. The script is laughable.

Even the fight scenes are slightly below par which is unusual for an Adkins movie.

I was pleased at the hit squad completely destroying the bar area, but failing to hit the fish tank. No one likes seeing fish getting shot up, do they?

Even though they are trapped in the apartment, there is very little in the way of tension. For some reason, they are struggling to close the curtains and there are a few times when they could leave by the door.

The high reviews on here are obviously fake. If you feel you must, then watch it and judge for yourself. This Scott Adkins fan is very dissappointed.

Awful.

This was pretty poor. It looks like a made for TV movie, that wouldn't even had made it to the VHS bargain bin back in the day.

The acting is lame. The script is atrocious which attempts to play somewhere between a Ryan Reynolds 'action comedy' and an epicly poor Tarantino action thriller.

Adkins colleague is very bad indeed. The action sequences are very poor.

I'd strongly recommend that you give this a wide berth. It's one of those films where you really wish that you can't unsee it, or feel bad about the amount of time that you lost watching it. I had to turn it off at about 35 minutes just during the flat fight sequence. I wish I'd given it up sooner.

Almost, but not quite.

I've always been a fan of Adkins and felt he deserved lead roles in action movies instead of always being supporting cast, and in this movie, he finally got that. But as usual, he's always in these B movies and usually with newb filmmakers, as is the case here. He did however carry the film, along with the rest of the cast that did their best with the terrible material they had to work with.

This movie is stuntman turned newb director Nick McKinless' first full length feature film, and I have to say, he did not disappoint - especially considering the terrible screenplay he had to work with. He directed this movie and his cast very well to the point he seemed like a seasoned director. Camera shots, action scenes and choreography were impressive, and he should be proud of his achievements. I feel McKinless has found his calling as a director.

However, where this movie failed miserably is in newb writer Joshua Todd James' terrible screenplay, that had the most pointless and cringeworthy dialogue I've ever heard. It's as if it was written by a bunch of high school drama class teenagers - riddled with annoying cuss words and frat-house back and forth bromance "my d*ick is bigger than yours" type dialogue. Then in between that, it was constant blah blah blahhh cringe dialogue that was mostly filler and did nothing to progress the narrative. This movie was literally the most boring and pointless sniper action movie I've seen.

From the entire middle act and on where they were hiding behind the sofas, was just nonsense conversation riddled with cliches, tedious exposition, shallow characterization and pointless dialogue. Even with the very short 80 min runtime (not counting all the opening and closing credits), the entire movie felt like it dragged on for over 2 hours. There just wasn't enough substance in this screenplay to be a full length movie, and would've been much more enjoyable as a short film. Never mind that the little substance there was, was riddled with plot holes and cliched parts taken from every other "one last job" movie out there.

Nevertheless, Adkins shined in this one, and it's too bad he spent most of his screen time blabbing nonsense instead of showcasing his action and fighting skills more than the barely five minutes he was given. It's a generous 5/10 from me.

Finally Adkins get a role properly suited to his skills

For the record, I am a fan. I have an Adkins film on my list of all-best movies, a claim few other reviewers can make. But, at the same time, I have been outspoken in my view that, since his Boyka films, he has not really found an outlet to best showcase his talent. TAKE COVER 2024 changes all that. Writer Joshua Todd James has cleverly turned a hi-rise apartment into a killbox, showing once again how a limited set does not have be a disadvantage. Properly done, the suspense becomes palpable. The script cleverly pushes the "turnabout" trope -- Adkins's being targeted by a faraway shooter works well because, in the story, he himself is also a sniper. Clever! There is a lot of action and tension in Take Cover, and many of Adkins' special skills are effectively deployed for the first time in quite a while. Recommended. ((Designated "IMDb Top Reviewer." Entertaining direct to VOD action movie for Scott Adkins fans

Everytime a new Scott Adkins movie comes out, i have to watch it. Really enjoy the guy type of action since i discovered him in Undisputed 2. This movie surprisingly was only available to buy/rent on Apple TV in Canada (not Prime, not Xbox, not Google), a place i sometimes forget to check, so it took me a little while to watch it. Still waiting on The Killing Game to release here but thats another story.

Scott plays an American in this movie, and altough you can pick some trace of his native British accent, it was overall very easy to understand for me in original English language (i usually watch movies in French dubbed when possible). Some of the other characters have a few foreign accents but overall had no issue understanding everything.

The intro has a lot of friendly bickering between the 2 leads and it does not backpedale on F bombs, wich is probably just to let us know they good friends and establish chemistry, but was a bit too much at times for me. But once the action start in the penthouse, the movie becomes very entertaining.

There is obviously a lot of "suspend your disbeliefs" moments in this. For instance a sofa would not be very useful to cover against sniper bullets. And the whole plan is very elaborated to eliminate Adkins and his pal when a simple dose of poison would had done it easily.

But thats a standard for pretty much every action movie and its not something i can fault the movie for too much. You don't watch a direct to VOD Scott Adkins movie for elaborate plot and cleaver writing. You want to see him kick some butts in good action sequences and you got it in this movie.

Alice Eve fans be warned, even tough she appear on the cover, and her role is not hidden in the trailer, she spend most of the movie her back against the camera and she felt very underused.

I really liked the character of Mona the massage girl and her chemistry with Adkins. The movie does not have a lot of side characters but beside Alice Eve i feel the others were well used.

Ultimately its just a fun action movie to enjoy with a few beers. I bough it for 9.99$CAD, wich was barely a little more than the rental price, so its gonna stay in my digital library and i could see myself watching it again in a few years. But its mostly one of these "Saturday Night disposable action movies" that you watch once, enjoy, and move on. At least to me.

If you are a big Scott Adkins fan, i totally recommand it. Action junkies? Also recommand. But if you only watch movies ocasionally and need a great story, clever dialogues etc, it may not be for you.

Hmmmm...it's so so

Professional mercenary sniper Sam Lorde (Scott Adkins) finds himself in the middle of an existential crisis when he accidentally kills an innocent who throws herself in front of his intended victim. He contacts his remote boss and tells her he wants to leave the business. The boss is very disappointed but books him and his spotter Ken (Jack Parr) into a posh hotel where she'll meet them to go through formalities. However, someone else knows they are there and they are out for vengeance... Right let's say the good things first. By the end of the film, it's quite feel good and you've enjoyed a convoluted story. I very much liked the performance of Madalina Bellariu Ion who plays call girl Mona. Perhaps the best performance of the entire film.

Right, the dogs ears...the script is truly awful. The non stop pseudo-hateful banter between Sam and Ken is acutely badly written and sounds as fake as it is. Fight scenes are pretty poor. Acting is pretty poor. Verbalised emotions are half felt and not explored properly. There are so many plot holes it borders on ridiculous, and there's too much melodrama from poor actors.

Having said all of that the story while not new at all, isn't bad. If this film had great actors and a top end director it probably would have been pretty good. As it was it wasn't dire, it just wasn't very well produced or directed in so many ways. I have had a very tasty and enjoyable dinner so I am in a great mood and I give it a 5.

If you are a top sniper, don't retire.

Scott Adkins is a recently retired sniper who is given a nice retirement reward with his best friend and partner in a very luxurious penthouse suite. The suite has an all glass view of the city below and the other buildings in the distance. What he doesn't know is he and his friend are about to become targets in an ever increasing contract by other snipers and assassins. The action is non stop after the first shot, and the suspense as well as they try to figure out how to get out without being killed. All the story and action are mostly within the room which makes for a very interesting puzzle. A few good twists as well as they try to figure out why. Great choreographed fights, and great characters play the parts well. Nothing questionable, no nudity, some foul language and lots of violence, but not over the top. Will see this a few more times. A good watch. Enjoy!

It wasn't great

Here's my review of Take Cover:

Scott Adkins was the only redeeming factor in this film, though calling it "enjoyable" would be a stretch. His performance managed to elevate certain moments, but unfortunately, it wasn't enough to save the movie.

The opening scene failed to make an impression, with a script that lacked both engagement and impact. The issue was compounded by the overly loud background music, which often drowned out the dialogue and made it hard to follow. This pattern continued throughout, making the viewing experience frustrating at best.

The plot and script were major disappointments, wasting the potential of some decent acting. The narrative felt dragged out and underwhelming, with scenes like the one in the hotel room coming across as bland and predictable. There was no tension or excitement, as it was far too easy to guess what would happen next.

While the cinematography was decent, the music often overstayed its welcome, especially in moments that were supposed to be pivotal. The script felt rushed and uninspired, leaving the actors with little to work with, though some performances stood out slightly above the rest.

Overall, Take Cover had potential but was let down by its weak script, predictable narrative, and poor sound design, making it a forgettable experience despite Scott Adkins' best efforts.

Delicious Alice Eve underutilized

But she couldn't save this movie anyway.

For almost the entire movie she is only shown facing away from the camera. One of many very questionable directing decisions.

It's a bottle movie, the scope is extremely limited, obvious and forcing annoyingly dumb decisions by the characters and painful prolonging dialogue to stay within the confines of the bottle movie premise. It could be used for the stage as is.

The movie is not even run of the mill cliche agency assassin unimaginative, it's a film student level script, one without a future in cinema.

It is curious that in the arena of well funded movie making that better scripts cannot be mustered. You'd think that even chatGPT could do better in 10 seconds.

Utter rubbish!

This was so bad overall, don't waste your time. The action scenes are fine, so wait till someone uploads them to YouTube because there's no need to pay attention to anything the character are saying as the "dialogue" is non existent or at best worse than terrible; especially the gibberish the girls are speaking! What was it supposed to be, Russian? If so, then why cast Romanian/Italian native speakers as "Slavic speakers"? Aren't there any actresses from Slovakia, Czechia, etc to play these characters?

The set looked ok until they opened the curtains and then it's the usual digital screen background and they managed to make it look cheap!

Never again watching anything with these people involved!

You can't go wrong with Scott Adkins

As always a fine ride, although the story and directing is not top, it is a B movie after all with law budget like most of Scott Adkins movies, but for me as a fan it's less important as I enjoy him kicking ass, and as always he gives 100% and try to get the best out of the low budget.

Acting is surprisingly good especially Jack Parr's , I would like to see more of him and it looks like his career is just at the beginning, The action is good but limited, there's also some drama, but as always all is predictable even the main twist of the movie can be spotted very early in the movie.

I think that Adkins actually belongs to the high league, he did give an amazing show in John Wick 4, and can bring a lot of character and fun to any action movie, he is making few movies every year, 99% of them are B movies, however is film-making knowledge is so good that he can add a lot of value to any big screen film.

Adkins is getting old, it's clear, at some point he will not be able to continue to kick as before, hopefully he will grow to other niches in action, there are plenty.

Typical negative, negative 95%, positive 5%

Too many movie writers/directors these days seem to think that the public are, like them, masochists. People like revenge and acton heros that win most of the time. Having to wait until the very end of the movie for any satisfaction is very unsatisfactory. And at the very end, the revenge is behind the scenes. Simple, But Fun

The action scenes are outstanding, but there isn't a lot of it. The dialogue was pretty clunky and the writing is basic, there were a lot of scenes that seemed unnecessarily long and drawn out, but when it does get to the juicy parts, it doesn't disappoint. Not Adkins' best work, but as always, he played his part spectacularly, always reminds us why he's the gold standard for action and martial arts in cinema. I would recommend, but also urge to watch some of his other work that's a little more solid, Accident Man and Debt Collector are good starters to go down the rabbit hole. Was hoping for something that stood out a little more, since the Hulu release can draw a lot of attention, but it is what it is.
