Die Schwiegermutter

First of all, this is neither a comedy nor a horror movie. The storyline is one of family distress between a very weak-kneed son and his overbearing and devious mother with his poor wife caught in between them.

The character of the mother is a very nasty and manipulative one. Someone totally narcissistic and self-serving who is willing to ruin her son's life for her own purposes.

Why this is categorized as a comedy mystifies me, but the fact that it is said to be a horror film is a staggering shock to me. There is not any supernatural, paranormal or science fiction aspect to the entire movie.

It is a long and grating repetition of this woman's antics designed to dominate her son and ruin his marriage.

The acting is so-so with the "star" playing the mother-in-law being totally overblown and flighty. The couple is played as utter lost individuals who lack any direction and seems in a constant state of helplessness!

It is an extremely annoying movie and made me furious when it ended with not a hint of horror or comedy in any part of it!

WHAT A WASTE OF TIME!!!!

I'm not used to Czech contemporary films I truly enjoy but this one hit the spot. I was especially surprised by the organic, realistic script. The camera work added to the story and kept it engaging and the actors' performance was also very lively and natural, especially of Simona Peková.

Taking away a few stars because of the end that felt very unfinished. A lot of loose threads were left hanging but not in a satisfactory manner. Also I couldn't help but wonder why they haven't called the police, and this plot hole I think in fact made the opened finale less cohesive than it could have been.
