“They don’t give charity”: Taylor Swift isn’t the Only Music Icon Who Opted Out of Jennifer Lopez’s New Movie, Fans Have Already Started the Trolling
Image
It has been ten years since Jennifer Lopez released her last album, A.K.A., in 2014. Now, the singer is back with her ninth studio album titled, This Is Me…Now. She will also be going on a concert tour to promote the album. If the album and the tour were not enough for her fans, Jennifer Lopez is also starring in an actual movie, This Is Me…Now: A Love Story, which will be based on her recent album.

Jennifer Lopez in This Is Me…A Love Story

The film is going to be as star-studded as possible with artists like Post Malone, Keke Palmer, and even Neil deGrasse Tyson having some cameo or the other. However, some big names in the industry were approached to be a part of the romantic drama but refused the offer citing one reason or the other. As Jennifer Lopez addressed this exact thing, she...

The French Crime Thriller That Claimed Netflix's Number 1 Spot
Image
Netflix has its fair share of problems, but its impressive slate of films and shows from all over the world isn't one of them. The streamer regularly makes new international shows and movies available to a mass audience, and with big hits like "Squid Game," "Money Heist," and "Dark," many of the most acclaimed and talked-about non-English language shows around these days come courtesy of Netflix.

Unfortunately, the streamer's persnickety algorithm and surplus of content means not everyone gets the memo when a new film or show drops. That means a movie or series can manage to earn a spot as the most-watched non-English project on the streamer — as the French thriller "Aka," Mexican satire "¡Que viva México!" and the Norwegian monster film "Troll" all did this month, per Netflix's internal metrics — without viewers even knowing about them. Though Netflix isn't particularly transparent with its viewership data, it does offer...

Netflix Top 10 (Week of May 15): Jennifer Lopez’s ‘The Mother’ and Shonda Rhimes’ ‘Queen Charlotte’ remain atop the charts
Image
The Netflix movie and TV series that have been dominating the streamer’s weekly viewing chart were both still atop the Top 10 chart for the week of May 15. Read on for this week’s analysis.

Jennifer Lopez‘s action-thriller “The Mother” burst into the weekly streaming chart last week, and it topped the English films list for a second week with 94.4 million hours viewed globally. That means the movie has been viewed by almost 90 million accounts, i.e. 178.1 million hours viewed divided by the movie’s 1.96 hour runtime. It remained in the Top 10 in 93 countries with many of those regions, including the U.S. and Canada, the #1 viewed movie.

The documentary “Anna Nicole Smith: You Don’t Know Me” also entered the charts in second place with 15.7 million hours viewed, followed by a number of non-Netflix films like Seth McFarlane‘s hit comedy “Ted,” Tom Hanks‘ “A Man Called Otto,” and the sci-fi thriller “Synchronic.

Netflix Top 10 (Week of May 8): ‘The Mother’ debuts on top with ‘Queen Charlotte’ holding firm on television chart
Image
When you debut a new movie starring a major A-lister like Jennifer Lopez on streaming, it’s likely to be successful, and that was the case with Netflix’s new action-thriller “The Mother.” It debuted atop the Netflix Top 10 (Week of May 8) viewing chart, far ahead of the second-place film “A Man Called Otto.” Read on for more analysis.

Directed by Niki Caro, Lopez’s “The Mother” hit the streamer on Friday and managed to rack up 83.7 million global viewing hours to top the English film chart over a number of non-Netflix movies. Netflix’s ‘Queen Charlotte’ Rules the Most-Watched Rankings | Charts
Image
Royals ruled this week’s most-watched programs. Netflix’s “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” topped streaming’s most-watched list as the coronation of King Charles III also garnered huge audiences.

For the week of May 3-9, Netflix’s new “Bridgerton” spin-off took the No. 1 spot on the streaming leaderboard, according to the latest Wrap Report — which tracks the most-watched programs across streaming and linear TV, according to viewership trends collected from Samba TV’s panel of more than 3 million households drawn from over 25 million connected TVs, balanced to the U.S. Census. In an impressive sweep, all six episodes of the Shonda Rhimes-produced prequel to Netflix’s hit series “Bridgerton” topped this week’s leaderboard in its debut week.

The coronation of Charles III and Camilla also amassed a sizable live television audience in the U.S., with 11.7 million households tuning into select broadcast and cable news networks including: CBS,...

Netflix Top 10 (Week of May 1): ‘Queen Charlotte’ reigns over TV as Tom Hanks’ ‘A Man Called Otto’ dominates film
Image
Netflix’s first-ever “Bridgerton” spin-off, “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story,” exploded into the global viewing charts this week, while movies were led by Tom Hanks‘ “A Man Called Otto.” Read on for the Netflix Top 10 (Week of May 1) viewing chart analysis.

It probably was a no-brainer for Netflix to explore the past of a popular character from Shonda Rhimes‘ hit streaming series “Bridgerton,” with Golda Rosheuvel reprising her title role in “Queen Charlotte” with India Amarteifio playing her younger self. Corey Mylchreest and Arsema Thomas were also part of the cast, playing Young King George and Young Agatha Danbury in the series building on Shondaland’s “Bridgerton-verse.” In its very first week, “Charlotte” received 148.3 million viewing hours worldwide, as the #1 series in the U.S., Canada and dozens of other countries.

Having just been renewed for a third season, the second season of “Sweet Tooth” followed in second place with 60.5 million hours viewed,...

‘Ted Lasso’ Tops Most-Streamed List – a First for Apple TV+ in 2023 | Charts
Image
Apple TV+’s biggest hit, “Ted Lasso,” scored a big win at the top of the streaming charts in the latest Wrap Report for the week of April 26-May 2. This season’s seventh episode beat out several hot new programs, including Amazon Prime Video’s “The Citadel” and Disney+’s debut of “Peter Pan & Wendy,” and marked the first time ever that Apple TV+ landed the top spot on the leaderboard.

The Wrap Report tracks the most-watched programs across linear TV and streaming, according to viewership trends collected from Samba TV’s panel of more than 3 million households drawn from over 25 million connected TVs, balanced to the U.S. Census.

In an enviable second place this week, Disney brought one of its all-time classic animated films to life with “Peter Pan & Wendy.” Audiences who grew up with a VHS or DVD of the animated original seemed to be...

‘Dungeons & Dragons’ Leads VOD, While ‘A Man Called Otto’ Takes the #1 Netflix Slot
Image
Just after a reported first quarter loss of $1.23 billion, Paramount has something to cheer this week. “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” ($19.99), released after its fifth weekend in theaters, is #1 on all VOD charts.

Reading the tea leaves that studios provide to figure out strategies is confusing. Paramount two weeks ago released “Scream VI” ($19.99) on both their own streaming platform and on PVOD. The much bigger-grossing horror film only reached #1 at Vudu, and at the end of its second week, only shows up on one of the three top ten lists.

As always, we are in the dark about the revenues a film ranked at #1 takes in. We do know that at a $19.99 price, Paramount recoups around $14/transaction. It appears they conceded much of that for “Scream VI,” hoping that it boosted the Paramount+ subscription interest. Again, this is mostly a mystery, though it is logical to assume its play...

Netflix Top 10 (Week of April 24): ‘The Diplomat’ remains at #1 with ‘Sweet Tooth’ close behind
Image
Although Netflix is now in the midst of a writers’ strike by the WGA East and WGA West, it still has plenty of content on the streamer, and Kerri Russell‘s “The Diplomat” had little problem topping the English-language TV chart for a second week in a row. Read on for the Netflix Top 10 (Week of April 24) viewing chart analysis.

Season 1 of “The Diplomat” remained the chart-topper with 66.5 million global hours viewed, as Netflix’s hit spy thriller series, “The Night Agent,” dropped to fourth place with 37.7 million hours viewed. “The Diplomat” also bumped up to the #1 slot in the United States and Canada, while remaining in the Top 10 in 84 countries total. “The Night Agent” was the #1 series in Egypt, Kuwait, Oman and Saudi Arabia.

The second season of “Sweet Tooth” entered the chart with a hearty 48.3 million hours viewed, followed by “Firefly Lane” Season 2 with 43.5 million viewing hours. “Sweet Tooth...

‘The Diplomat’ Keeps the Peace Atop Netflix Top 10 TV List for Second Week in a Row

Netflix’s political drama “The Diplomat” has maintained the top spot on Netflix’s Top 10 TV list with 66.46 million hours viewed this week.

The Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell-led drama, which scored a quick Season 2 renewal at the streamer, reached the Top 10 in 84 countries with over 18 million views.

Just behind “The Diplomat” on the English TV list was “Sweet Tooth” Season 2, which debuted in the No. 2 spot on the list with 48.34 million hours viewed this week as Season 1 of the series also re-entered the list in the sixth most watched spot. The final installment of “Firefly Lane” Season 2 also made an impressive splash in the third spot on the list with 43.49 million hours viewed, while “Beef” locked down the No. 4 spot on the list as the revenge dramedy logged an additional 24.48 million hours viewed.

‘Scream VI’ Lets Streaming Take the Lead with Debuts on PVOD and Paramount+
Image
Paramount+ decide to stream “Scream VI” 45 days after its theatrical launch. It’s parallel to its PVOD debut — but that means streaming takes priority.

PVOD revenue usually precedes streaming placement. Universal, which makes PVOD available for most films after three weekends, places titles on Peacock after 45 days. Warner Bros. Discovery offered “Shazam: Fury of the Gods” for PVOD after 21 days its theatrical debut, but Max will have to wait two months.

As a result, the PVOD debut for “Scream VI” is muted. Instead of a strong showing across the board, it is #1 at Vudu (which ranks by revenue), but currently stands at #7 and #8 at the transaction-based iTunes and Google Play. It debuted as high as #2 on iTunes but quickly fell, perhaps as streaming awareness increased.

The not-yet-streaming “Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” (both Disney) took #1 spots (iTunes with “The Way of Water” and Google...

‘Aka’ (2023) Ending, Explained: Does Adam Franco Find Moktar Al Tayeb?
Image
Infiltration comes with a lot of conditions, and not just from the mission’s Pov. To earn trust is to be emotionally involved, even if a little bit, and thus to be a bit vulnerable too. It is where the line is drawn between being involved and being vulnerable that proves the ability of the infiltrator. On top of that, sometimes, the truth that stares us in the face is far from the truth that was expected. This is where guilt kicks in, followed by rage. While we may wonder if guilt and rage are enough to make an infiltrator go rogue, it depends on how the infiltrator handles both truths. With these things in mind, let’s begin our conversation on Netflix’s crime thriller Aka.

Spoilers Ahead

Plot Synopsis: What Happens In ‘Aka’?

The Etoile Hotel in France is blown up by a terrorist cell led by Sudanese warlord Moktar Al Tayeb.

‘Aka’ (2023) Review: Netflix’s Film Is Packed With Meaningless Action But Takes Itself Too Seriously
Image
Action films with no content whatsoever are buzzkills. With nothing going for them from the start, just endless action scenes make the film awkward and even just plain boring. There must be more than just the action scenes that the film or TV show offers in this genre. Aka, a French Netflix original, falls into this category for being a decidedly uninteresting action film. Directed by Morgan S. Dalibert, it is all about an ex-military man hired to infiltrate a crime syndicate, but will he get attached to people he is not supposed to?

Aka starts with a special Ops agent sent to South Sudan to rescue Sonia Gautier, a high-profile French journalist, and she is rescued in no time thanks to this gentleman’s great combat skills. But the issue with this entire sequence is that it is executed lazily. This is supposed to set the mood for the...

‘Aka’ (2023). Netflix Movie. Review: French style “Badass”
Aka is a French-style gangster thriller that has its main appeal in showing Eric Cantona playing a Scarface. Too bad he isn’t up to it.

Aka is a French film directed by Morgan S. Dalibert starring Alban Lenoir and Eric Cantona. Yes, the one from Manchester United.

About the movie

Bad guys, very “badass” in a movie that Guy Ritchie would have done much better.

The star this time is not Cantona, featured almost as a commercial claim for the film, but this actor called Alban Lenoir who, with his very manly features, fits the role to perfection … A quite different matter is if the role is worth it or if the movie has enough dramatic intensity to demonstrate anything beyond knowing how to hold a gun (there are others in Hollywood who do not even know how to do that).

As for the Movie: zero sense of humor...

Here’s What’s New on Netflix in April 2023
Penny Marshall
Netflix has several new films and original shows coming out in April, just in time for Q2. Great classic movies and animated films arrive with this month’s slate rotation as well. Some Netflix originals tackle the incoming warmer weather that arrives starting April.

Starting with the classics, Penny Marshall’s “A League of Their Own” (1992) starring Geena Davis, Tom Hanks, Lori Petty and Madonna, becomes available to watch on the streamer April 1 while we all wait for solid renewal news for Prime Video’s TV series — created by Will Graham and Abbi Jacobson — that takes the movie’s story deeper. Leonardi DiCaprio’s mind-bending movie “Inception” also arrives April Fool’s Day. Animated hits “Hotel Transylvania” and “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax” arrive the first of the month as well.

“Firefly Lane” Season 2 Part 2 will conclude the television adaptation of Kristin Hannah’s novel, which tells the story of Tully...
