Unfortunately, the streamer's persnickety algorithm and surplus of content means not everyone gets the memo when a new film or show drops. That means a movie or series can manage to earn a spot as the most-watched non-English project on the streamer — as the French thriller "Aka," Mexican satire "¡Que viva México!" and the Norwegian monster film "Troll" all did this month, per Netflix's internal metrics — without viewers even knowing about them. Jennifer Lopez‘s action-thriller “The Mother” burst into the weekly streaming chart last week, and it topped the English films list for a second week with 94.4 million hours viewed globally. That means the movie has been viewed by almost 90 million accounts, i.e. 178.1 million hours viewed divided by the movie’s 1.96 hour runtime. It remained in the Top 10 in 93 countries with many of those regions, including the U.S. and Canada, the #1 viewed movie.

The documentary “Anna Nicole Smith: You Don’t Know Me” also entered the charts in second place with 15.7 million hours viewed, followed by a number of non-Netflix films like Seth McFarlane‘s hit comedy “Ted,” Tom Hanks‘ “A Man Called Otto,” and the sci-fi thriller “Synchronic.

When you debut a new movie starring a major A-lister like Jennifer Lopez on streaming, it’s likely to be successful, and that was the case with Netflix’s new action-thriller “The Mother.” It debuted atop the Netflix Top 10 (Week of May 8) viewing chart, far ahead of the second-place film “A Man Called Otto.” Read on for more analysis.

Directed by Niki Caro, Lopez’s “The Mother” hit the streamer on Friday and managed to rack up 83.7 million global viewing hours to top the English film chart over a number of non-Netflix movies. It was the #1 film in the U.S. and Canada, as well as 80 other countries, and it was in the top 10 in 93 countries total.

Tom Hanks‘ “A Man Called Otto” dropped to second place with 19.9 million hours viewed, followed by DreamWorks Animation’s 10-year-old animated film “The Croods” with 8.7 million hours viewed.

Just after a reported first quarter loss of $1.23 billion, Paramount has something to cheer this week. “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” ($19.99), released after its fifth weekend in theaters, is #1 on all VOD charts.

Netflix’s political drama “The Diplomat” has maintained the top spot on Netflix’s Top 10 TV list with 66.46 million hours viewed this week.

The Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell-led drama, which scored a quick Season 2 renewal at the streamer, reached the Top 10 in 84 countries with over 18 million views.

Just behind “The Diplomat” on the English TV list was “Sweet Tooth” Season 2, which debuted in the No. 2 spot on the list with 48.34 million hours viewed this week as Season 1 of the series also re-entered the list in the sixth most watched spot. The final installment of “Firefly Lane” Season 2 also made an impressive splash in the third spot on the list with 43.49 million hours viewed, while “Beef” locked down the No. 4 spot on the list as the revenge dramedy logged an additional 24.48 million hours viewed.

Paramount+ decide to stream “Scream VI” 45 days after its theatrical launch. It’s parallel to its PVOD debut — but that means streaming takes priority.

PVOD revenue usually precedes streaming placement. Universal, which makes PVOD available for most films after three weekends, places titles on Peacock after 45 days. Warner Bros. Discovery offered “Shazam: Fury of the Gods” for PVOD after 21 days its theatrical debut, but Max will have to wait two months.

As a result, the PVOD debut for “Scream VI” is muted. Instead of a strong showing across the board, it is #1 at Vudu (which ranks by revenue), but currently stands at #7 and #8 at the transaction-based iTunes and Google Play. It debuted as high as #2 on iTunes but quickly fell, perhaps as streaming awareness increased.

It is where the line is drawn between being involved and being vulnerable that proves the ability of the infiltrator. On top of that, sometimes, the truth that stares us in the face is far from the truth that was expected. This is where guilt kicks in, followed by rage. While we may wonder if guilt and rage are enough to make an infiltrator go rogue, it depends on how the infiltrator handles both truths. With these things in mind, let’s begin our conversation on Netflix’s crime thriller Aka.

Action films with no content whatsoever are buzzkills. With nothing going for them from the start, just endless action scenes make the film awkward and even just plain boring. There must be more than just the action scenes that the film or TV show offers in this genre. Aka, a French Netflix original, falls into this category for being a decidedly uninteresting action film. Directed by Morgan S. Dalibert, it is all about an ex-military man hired to infiltrate a crime syndicate, but will he get attached to people he is not supposed to?

Aka starts with a special Ops agent sent to South Sudan to rescue Sonia Gautier, a high-profile French journalist, and she is rescued in no time thanks to this gentleman’s great combat skills. Aka is a French-style gangster thriller that has its main appeal in showing Eric Cantona playing a Scarface. Too bad he isn’t up to it.

About the movie

Bad guys, very “badass” in a movie that Guy Ritchie would have done much better.

The star this time is not Cantona, featured almost as a commercial claim for the film, but this actor called Alban Lenoir who, with his very manly features, fits the role to perfection … A quite different matter is if the role is worth it or if the movie has enough dramatic intensity to demonstrate anything beyond knowing how to hold a gun (there are others in Hollywood who do not even know how to do that).

As for the Movie: zero sense of humor...

Netflix has several new films and original shows coming out in April, just in time for Q2. Great classic movies and animated films arrive with this month’s slate rotation as well. Some Netflix originals tackle the incoming warmer weather that arrives starting April.

Starting with the classics, Penny Marshall’s “A League of Their Own” (1992) starring Geena Davis, Tom Hanks, Lori Petty and Madonna, becomes available to watch on the streamer April 1 while we all wait for solid renewal news for Prime Video’s TV series — created by Will Graham and Abbi Jacobson — that takes the movie’s story deeper. Leonardi DiCaprio’s mind-bending movie “Inception” also arrives April Fool’s Day. Animated hits “Hotel Transylvania” and “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax” arrive the first of the month as well.
