Would have been really good if only it wasn't so unfocused

I'm not really going to structure my review for this, and instead use this as an impression dump. "Vettayan" was definitely the best Rajni movie since "Petta", but it's also the case that there just hasn't been a half decent Rajni movie since "Petta". "Vettayan" does its best to hold ground, but it still ends up being a rather tiresome watch. The main reason for this is just how long this movie went on for when it didn't really need to.

The first half was pretty good and while that might have been enough to keep your attention for a while, the second half fumbles the ball as soon as they reveal the direction of the movie. There's nothing here really that you haven't seen a million times before, but at the very least, there wasn't anything embarrassingly bad... except maybe the action, as has been the case in every Rajni movie, where the best action choreography you could do with a 70 year old man is to get him to swing his arms and flick his wig.

It's a passable movie for sure, and by Rajni standards, that's a good thing.

Good but not great

I had no expectations on this one, I badly wanted to like this movie, and the movie ended up as a satisfactory watch to me.

The 1st half is relatively better, stuck to crime thriller genre, and set good stage for 2nd half.

However, the 2nd half meandered between several subplots, had few flaws, and never took off to the next level.

The film could use a stronger antagonist in terms of writing and character development. He seemed like any other corporate criminal.

It is a challenge to blend realism & Rajni but the director is decently successful in doing it. The movie could have been a bit better but it is not bad either. Ani did justice to the film wherever he can, especially, for the intro scene.

Didn't have to be that long

I enjoyed this movie overall. The story conveys a strong message, and the character balance is thoughtfully handled. Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan share excellent chemistry, and Fahadh Faasil truly proves himself as a chameleon, adapting seamlessly to his role.

However, the film's length and certain screenplay choices weigh it down. Some scenes, like the death scene, are replayed excessively, and numerous lingering shots add to the runtime without contributing much to the story. The decision to introduce the villain so late also felt like a missed opportunity; it led to hurried exposition to catch the audience up, which disrupted the flow.

While I don't mind a lengthy movie if it has enough to say, this one felt stretched. Tightening up the pacing would have made for a more engaging experience without sacrificing the depth or impact.

A potentially great movie turned into an average one through compromises made for Mr. Rajinikanth.

Honestly speaking the movie was quite good,

The movie explored the controversial topic of police encounters and the politics behind them, as well as the scams involving online education institutes, which was commendable.

The movie could have just ended with the arrest of the antagonist Rana Daggubati, but it doesn't, it goes on to the unbelievable plot of Rana escaping the very strong police force just like that and trying to flee the country via helicopter to a cruise. This leads Mr Rajinikanth to fly to the scene with style in a helicopter single-handedly facing a mini army of villain troops. And then yet again arresting him. After a long fight showcasing his fit-for-nothing style.

The climax fight was totally unwanted and I'm pretty sure it would have been from the request of the hero to showcase his mass masala strength. Because the movie director's previous film Jai Bhim starring Surya was totally close to actuality and had no masala nonsense. The movie could have just ended with the arrest of the antagonist.

It's high time we throw away these so-called mass moments and concentrate on better filmmaking and close-to-reality movies. Just my opinion.

Shades in action

Vettaiyan unfolds in two gripping parts, combining high-octane police encounters with a poignant examination of justice. The first half immerses viewers in thrilling action, showcasing relentless chase sequences and dramatic shootouts. However, the narrative shifts post-intermission, focusing on the legal intricacies of seeking justice after an untimely death. This transition highlights the stark contrast between the adrenaline of the chase and the sobering reality of the legal system. The film's pacing is swift, though it occasionally feels like a slow motion advert for photochromic glasses, overall it's an engaging blend of action and drama.

One of a kind Rajini's Movie

If you are expecting for a usual Rajini commercial movie. THIS IS NOT FOR YOU. The fans should appreciate this kinda of movies from Thalaivar.

This movie is purely for someone appreciates CONTENT - PERFORMANCE - MESSAGE.

Film has a few lacks but overall it delivers what the movie intended too.

1st half is one of the best for 2024. Keeps all on their seats.

One should be avoided which are the repeated brutal murder scene and "thalaivar's" repeated dialog

Class act from Thalaivar & Amit Ji. And not to forget Fafa! He gives a comic feel in the movie and leaves his impact till the very end of the movie.

Rajnisim in Social Element Story Telling

*** Vettaiyan ( Hunter) Tamil Movie Review

Directed by T. J. GNANVEL starring Rajnikant in the lead role.

One Line Review : A social element conveyed with some Rajnisim.

T. J. Gnanvel who is known for his Jai Bhim , here also talks about some of the important issues of the society but it was more interesting to see how he inserted the Super Star into his story world.

If this was conveyed as T. J Gnanvel style it could have been experience of Jai Bhim but when it's when super star Rajnisim is required & we could see his whistle blowing moments thereby not loosening the commercial element.

Performance wise, Super Star flauntessly carried his character & of course when there are no Rajini moments the film would have been dull but he ignited with his usual swag.

Apart from Super Star, Fahadh Faasil performance stands. The chemistry with the Superstar worked out well. The other lead characters, Amitabh Bachchan , Ritika Singh, Manju Warrier , Dusshara Vijayan had done their parts well.

The only miscast was Rana Daggubati . His villainism didn't spark well as the character had a wildness but the outcome was poor.

Anirudh's music & proper BGM was whistle blowing.

Overall Vettaiyan delivers entertainment with a social message reminder.

Rajni mass missing. But a good movie with good content

Definitely a good movie with all the characters doing justice to their roles.

Rajni and Fahad combo was fun to watch. Mass moments were there for Rajni but expected more.

Anil **njans spreading negative reviews and finally true positive wom is attracting family audience and others increasing the screens globally.

Definitely we can watch twice. Atleast one time must watch. There is no lag in the second half.

Climax could have been better. Felt thalaivar dialogue delivery in the climax was not proper (pronounciation)

The one liner is very catchy Kuri vecha era vizhanum..

Back to back hits for thalaivar after annathe failure.. Waiting for his career best Coolie with Lokesh. Hoping Lokesh would cook his best for Thalaivar standalone.

Vettaiyan - Rajini vilayaattu

Vettaiyan offers a compelling narrative that aptly explores the theme of "justice hurried is justice buried." While it might not fully embody director Gnanavel's signature style, it succeeds as a Rajinikanth film with Gnanavel's touch visible throughout.

The first half is engaging, well-paced, and filled with moments that keep you invested. However, the second half lacks the same punch, and it feels like it could have been tighter in terms of pacing and storytelling. Despite this, the cast delivers solid performances-Fahad, Ritika, Kishore, Dushara, and Amitabh all play their roles well, seamlessly contributing to the overall story. Anirudh music is repetitive.

Overall, Vettaiyan is a good watch, especially for those who appreciate a blend of commercial appeal with a strong underlying message, but it could have been even better with a more impactful second half.

Would like to know thalivaru's opinion on shamooga virodigal

Lets get straight to the point. This movie was more of a Rajni movie than a Gnanavel movie. It was quite evident from the very start as the movie was littered with too many unnecessary build up shots for thalivaru. While the movie has strong leftist philosophical core, the main theme of being against encounter murders is hijacked by Rajni is adorkable chararacter Vetaiyan who pulls the trigger first and thinks about it later. Rajni's character is an excuse for all cops in the world as they put the "best intentions" before killing someone like George Floyd or Jayaraj or Bennicks.

Remind you, this was the same director who made Jai Bhim with a theme of "custody violence bad". The director could have gone for a budget actor like Vijay Sethupathi over Rajni and had full freedom over the script and screenplay. Since this is a Rajni movie, we also need to talk about Rajni. Rajni plays the usual macho cop albeit with a weird mix of hawkeye, following the trend we've seen in recent Rajni movies.

Rajni's personal opinion on people who protest like the teacher and her friend who protested against the coaching centre involves dehunanising them by calling them "shamooga virodogal". Since Rajni insists that cops shouldn't be hunters in the climax, a movie title of "Shamooga virodigal murderers" would have made much more sense.

Mass + Social Msg... Tharamaana sambavam

Great movie!

A thought provoking and equally mass movie!

Talks about inequality, human rights, reforms required in education system, incorrect perception about slum

Exposes the commercialization of entrance exams for professional courses!

After a long time, Rajini has picked a story with meat!

All actors have done their part very well. We know Amitabh is tall but his character really stands tall in this movie!

Fahath Fassil as Battery is fully charged!

Gnanavel has once again proved his directorial skill. Every scene shown in the movie has a meaning! Post interval, you will connect the dots and realise his brilliance! We need more directors like him.

Watch it. Don't miss it.

Predictable but Enjoyable

One cannot miss the chance to watch Rajini and Bachchan sharing screen for a movie. You just can't. Along with these two GOAT's, casting of Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati and Manju Warrier is just icing on the cake. Pat on the back for T. J. Gnanavel.

Vettaiyan is an action packed, high octane crime thriller that despite its minor flaws, lack of logic, and predictable narrative is enjoyable till the end. Rajinikanth plays V Athiyan aka Vettaiyan, a police officer known for his foolproof encounters while Amitabh Bachchan is Justice Satyadev who contests that police encounters violate basic human rights and dishonours the Indian constitution. This is what this movie is all about, Vigilante Justice vs. Legal Justice.

With powerful emotional moments and few twist & turns, this film is a treat for all the Rajini fans out there.

Vettaiyan - A Judicial tussle over a socio-economic evil

An action drama portraying a socio-economic cause and how the law and order of the state hunts down the evil.

The plot of the story revolves around a socio-economic cultural evil and to see whether the valour hunter in the police department brings down the social monster with the judicial power or hunt down as an encounter specialist.

T J Gnanavel has penned the story for Thalaivar giving avenues for mass action performance unlike his debut directorial that highlighted a social cause from a very serious perspective. The story is engaging but the major plot of the movie becomes evident to the viewers in the first 20 minutes of the movie. Gnanavel has highlighted the importance of instant justice & equal rights to humans through this movie with strong statements.

Gnanavel has brought in stellar star cast for his action drama entertainer. Rajini has given a splendid performance as a valour cop in the movie with impressive action sequences and mass dialogues. Big B has given a powerful appearance in the movie with his strong and impactful dialogues. Fantabulous performance by Fahadh Faasil alongside Thalaivar & Ritika with his subtle humour and mannerisms. Fahadh as always never fails to make the audience awestruck with his class performance be it any film industry. Impressive performances by Dushara Vijayan,Ritika Singh,Manju Warrier,Rana Daggubati,Abhirami,Rohini & Kishore Kumar. Gnanavel has also surprised the audiences with many cameo performances from Mollywood.

Special applause to Anirudh for the mass masala song with impressive performance from Manju Warrier moving to the groove and the BGM's in the intro and action sequences. Anbarivu combo to be specially mentioned for the entertaining action sequences and Philomin Raj for the perfectly packed action entertainer.

A perfect action entertainer movie with a socio-economic reference for the festive season of Dussehra.

Rating - 3.5/5.

EXCELLENT.

I went to watch the Movie as it's hero is Rajnikanth. The Superstar stole the entire show and his performance was Awesome. As usual his performance will not be a boring one. The performance of Big B was great. Rana Daggubati's performance is very much appreciable. Fahad's performance was fine. The Story was Nice and it is not a lag and the investigation part was Good but it should have been expanded little bit. Climax scenes was fantastic. The Movie mainly discusses the merits and demerits of encounter killings. The Direction and Script was also Good. There was one violent scene and it should have been avoided. Waiting eagerly for Super Star's Coolie.

Underwhelming

I was expecting something special considering it was meant to Amithabh Bachchan & Rajnikant together after Hum, however the screen they shared together there was no real impactful dialogue. This was Shivaji but darker and the protagonist as a police officer fighting against a corrupt rich business man who is manipulating the education system.

Fahadh Faasil was good in his. Liked his character and acting in in. Tamil movies do emotions and also action so much better than Bollywood. You don't see the heroines exposing. Or in skimpy clothes for 99% of the movie. One thing I absolutely hate and they need to stop doing is keep putting up disclaimers everytime someone smokes or drinks, it ruins the viewing experience. Put a warning before the movie and be done with it, do you see it in movies from Hollywood? No, China? No then why movies coming out of India?

THE HUNTER HITS BULLS EYE

Vettaiyan: One of the best Thalaivar movie in the last 10 years when it comes to non-massy, great content, and with a deep social message that hits the audience like a jolt. Gnanavel the director is rightfully the captain who steers the racy boat in the first half and puts a stunner before the interval. He tops the second half with a strong story and an important issue that a common man is currently facing. Screenplay is like a fighter jet and editing is top notch. Anirudh's terrific background score keeps you at the edge.

Shri Amitabh Bachchan ji has done complete justice for his role with grace. Rana Daggubati shows his ferociousness and anger with the right balance. Fahad Faasil is the charm with his wit, quirkiness, humor and intellect. He just owns the character and pushes the envelope with ease. Our Thalaivar Rajini brings fire on the screen with his style, swag, seriouness and emotions. Fans will have plenty of clap worthy moments from him as he smashes with intelligence. This is easily Thailavar's career best investigative thriller with a deep social message, and where the law needs to kick in.

Not bad but not great either

The film does have two themes unlike the earlier movies of Rajnikanth Bloodfest Jailer and illogical Darbar But the execution gets predictable and boring after a point. Also the punch dialogue and background music for the superstar dont make much impact. Jailer the music was outstanding which was one reason, it was so successful.

The movie deals with encounter killings and the education mafia. Amitabh Bachchan acts as the judge who questions the human rights and legality of such extra judicial killings by the police. His Tamil accent is quite irritating. I seriously don't understand why a Tamil or any South Indian veteran actor could not have played this role. What is this fascination in Rajinikanth movies to fill them with Bollywood actors? The casting of Manju Warrier added no value and the one scene she could have made an impact, fails completely. The best pairs for Rajini were Easwari Rao of Kaala and Ramya Krishnan. This movie had the worst pairing.

Dushara gives a credible performance of the lot. But the show stealer is Faahad Faasil who lights up every scene he appears.

Overall the movie needs a more thrilling plot and suspense elements. The second half is almost a documentary with predictable scenes.

Total Scam!

Vettaiyan is a colossal disappointment, a film that promised excitement but delivered boredom in bulk. The storyline is weak, with underwhelming performances and direction that lacks any real spark. It's as if they threw in all the clichés and hoped for a hit, but instead, we got a slow, dragging mess. Even the action scenes feel forced and out of place. Watching it feels like an endurance test, and honestly, it's hard not to feel scammed. This one's a total miss, and I wouldn't be surprised if people start asking for refunds!

It's time for Rajini to consider retirement. Watching him on screen now feels like seeing a legend running out of steam-tired, no energy. Let's remember him at his best, not like this.

A Thalaivar-Powered Action Drama with a Flawed Second Half

"Vettaiyan" is a thrilling action drama that delivers on its promise of Rajinikanth's signature style and mass appeal. The film's engaging story, coupled with Thalaivar's powerful screen presence and goosebump-inducing moments, makes for a captivating first half.

Rajinikanth's performance as the titular character is a major highlight, showcasing his charisma and commanding presence. The action sequences are well-choreographed and visually impressive, providing ample moments of excitement for fans.

However, the film falters in its second half, with a screenplay that loses momentum and becomes predictable. While the initial intrigue and suspense are maintained for a while, the narrative struggles to sustain its grip, leading to a somewhat underwhelming climax.

Despite its flaws, "Vettaiyan" remains an entertaining watch for Rajinikanth fans and those seeking an action-packed drama. The film's strong performances, particularly from Rajinikanth, and its engaging first half make it worth watching. However, be prepared for a second half that doesn't quite live up to the initial promise.

Good Idea,Uninteresting Execution

Among the first people to have watched this film at 4 am IST on the first day with the only expectation from TJ Gnanavel who directed the masterpiece Jai Bhim. Again he has selected a thought provoking social issue but unfortunately the execution was not fully convincing.

The first half was excellent and kept the audience interested while establishing the story. But the film fell flat in the second half where the core issue was explored.

Commercial elements are not TJ Gnanavel's comfort zone with the action sequences out of place.

Performance wise,Rajini and Amitabh had adequate screen presence. Among the supporting cast Fahadh was exceptional as a foil for Rajini while Rana was a misfit as the corporate villain. The rest of the supporting cast were just there.

Anirudh as usual was in form with his songs and BGM.

The editing felt dragged due to the stretched action sequences in the second half.

Had the director balanced the commercial elements in the second half after an excellent first half we would have had an excellent film. Still a decent watch for the sensitive social issue highlighted.

Below Average!

Gnanavel, the director, made an effort to create an engaging story, but the screenplay failed to support his vision.

The first half was somewhat watchable, but the second half failed to maintain the momentum and felt very lengthy. It was almost like watching a class lecture.

Anirudh fails to deliver a good background score and songs like he did for Jailer

The director tried to give a film with good content like Jai Bhim with commercial elements but he fails to deliver the right balance.

It's better the director sticks to what he does better instead of compromising his vision to glorify the main hero.

Swag of Thalaiva & Class of Big B

The word 'Vettaiyan' means 'The Hunter' .

Athiyan (played by Rajinikanth) is SP of Kanykumari district, Tamilnadu. He's known as encounter specialist.

Sathyadev (played by Amitabh Bachchan) is Justice of National Human Rights Commission of India.

Battery aka Cyber Patrick (played by Fahadh Faasil) is a thief but helps police to catch the criminals red handed.

Nat Shanmugam (played by Rana Daggubati) is owner of an ed-tech company Nat Academy.

Saranya is a teacher of a primary school. Her information helps SP Athiyan to catch the drug lord Kumaresan. After this she takes transfer to Chennai. And their she finds that 'Smart Student Programm' a jv of Tamilnadu Govt. & Nat Academy is actually a scam. She starts protesting against it. But gets threatning for her life from Nat Academy.

Later she is brutally raped & murdered. We'll see how SP Athiyan manages to find the main culprits & punishes them. Also we see a tranformation in Athiyan's character & thought process. Amitabh helps him to achieve this.

Rajinikanth has been presented in a larger than life character as usual. Frankly this type of characters suits him well & he also enjoys doing these characters.

Amitabh Bachchan as Justice Sathyadev is also good in his role. He has done this type of role earlier & it suits him well.

Fahadh Faasil as Battery aka Cyber Patrick is very good in his role. Whenever his charecter comes on the screen, it's brings a sight of joy.

Rana Daggubati as owner of Nat Academy is good. His expreessions are reliable also.

Manju Warrier, Ritika Singh, Abhirami, Kishore and other supporting actors are good in their characters.

Screenplay is good. The film has a run time of 2hrs and 41mins but it never makes you bored.

The action scenes are well executed and entertaining. But it doesn't makes you wow which is okay for me.

Music department has been taken care by Anirudh Ravichander. The bgm for Vettaiyan is good. But overall music part isn't so impressive.

Camera work, graphics department is good.

It's definitely worth for a watch.

Interesting but...

Interesting storyline but the background music damn annoying...never ending background music, kills off the tense moment...This is not a musical movie for god sake...It's supposed to be a crime thriller, but u can't live the moment due to the annoying background music...I'm not sure what the music director trying to prove...just an occasional background music should be sufficient...Can't even concentrate on the dialogues...seriously wanted to stop watching but it's been a while since Superstar made a movie like this...Give it a go,but if possible ignore the never ending annoying background music...
