This movie takes 25 minutes to get to the first police action scene, a guy cutting the same part of his arm over and over again with a cleaver. I guess that was the only bleeder special effects they had? After 3-4 times chopping the same place I expected the hand to fall off.
Lots of cop-new-partner buddy talk. Really incredibly boring stuff. Lots of tracking shots of Gino Pesi walking around in his dark coat. Like John Wick, but without any shooting or fighting.
His co-star Detective Kristin Renton acted like she just came from MTV, and she had. She seemed about to start dancing at any point. Just totally no dynamics with the sour personality of Gino Pesi.
Into the movie are cut various scenes of unexplained guy and his girlfriend and son. At some point she wants to leave him because he is doing drugs. No explanation what the connection is to the main characters. Eventually at the end, we get a pretty disgusting murder scene, and the connection is just bombed into the movie.
Halfway in, an old guy (Willie C. Carpenter) has a seizure at a grocery store, and Pesi sees him at the hospital, and the old man asks him to find his dog. Pesi goes back to the grocery store and finds the dog.
The scenes with the dog, Pesi, and Renton are by far the best scenes in this movie. The dog is really friendly and reacts to Pesi better than his partner Renton does. They made the movie a lot better by putting the dog into it. The dog was the only actor that had chemistry with Pesi.

It's a trifecta... poorly written, poorly acted and poorly directed. A possible career ender for all involved. From its nonsensical plot to the painfully wooden performances, this movie is a masterclass in cinematic mediocrity, leaving viewers with a profound sense of wasted time and a yearning for something, anything, to engage with on screen.
The narrative, if you can call it that, is a jumbled mess of poorly connected subplots that seem to have been thrown together haphazardly. Characters are introduced with no apparent purpose, their motivations unclear, and their arcs abruptly truncated without any satisfying resolution. The story attempts to tackle themes of love, loss, and redemption, but falls flat at every turn, leaving the audience bewildered and questioning if they missed some crucial piece of the puzzle that never actually existed.

This was a really generic cop drama that is almost a ridiculous stereotype of the genre. Eastwood did the exact same movie over and over in the Dirty Harry franchise. But worse, its obviously a pilot for a tv series that no one bought.
Uwe Boll has always been a hack, but this seems more like a director for hire tv movie right out of the 70s.
All that said, I liked the cast. I hope this earns them some more roles. It wasnt their fault the story wandered all over the place, and really had no plot or direction. The ending leaves you looking for the next episode. Its not a bad watch, and I dont feel like I wasted 90 minutes, but it just isnt original at all.

I've never seen a worse movie than this. I would have given it to zero if they allowed it. Horrible plot and storyline. Just wasn't enjoyable whatsoever. Fast forwarded thru 30%. I don't understand how this type of movie can make it to the screen and get these actors paid. The writing was just so empty. The story did not make sense or have a line to a reasonable ending. It seems like they just made this out of nothing. I wish I could talk to the people that produce this film. I wish I could talk to the people that have viewed this film and have a discussion about it. Can someone tell me anything positive about this film. Can anyone tell me a worst movie than this that they have seen the last 10 years?

Reading the info on this I went into it thinking it would be a good view, I don't put too much thought into a movie except that it's a break from reality for an hour and a half of entertainment but quite honestly this one was kinda boring, the acting was definitely B movie rating, storyline was all over the place and the characters don't really pull you in too well, main character seems guarded but at the same time opens up messing it up for us as viewers, no spoilers here but I wouldn't recommend this one to anyone as like I said, it is on the boring side and one of those movies where you will watch it one time and never again.

Painfully bad. Long tracking shots for no reason. Bizarre soundtrack that seems like it was from 1980's. The acting is so stiff and the characters are so one dimensional that they are almost laughable.
It feels like it was a group project for a film class at a community college. This director and anyone associated with this film should never be allowed to work in the industry again.
How does a movie like this ever get made? Is the world this desperate for content? Because I would rather sit in an empty room in silence that actually spend time watching this movie. Yes, it is really that bad.
BTW, we stopped after 20 mins.

Uwe Bolle the writer, director and producer of this filmed watched too many bad New York City cop films, before he wrote this one. This film is full of cliches and cliched characters. I'm always leery of films where the writer, producer and director are the same person, I'm more leery when they're also the star.
The first incident that they attend, a guy with a clever has been cutting himself but he stops bleeding and the only blood is on the clever. Where is the continuity, the guy should have blood dripping from him.
The dialog is inane. Angela has diarrhea of the mouth, I'd want to get away from her too. The acting is low budget. I gave up, there are much better films I'd rather watch.

Didn't expect to like it, but the movie has heart. It kept moving.
I understand the previous review's claim it was too slow, but it is a style.
Reminds me of the crime genre from yesteryear, sans the detective bent.
Would be great spun off into annual 3 or 6 episode BBC type miniseries.
Actors had good chemistry and situational dialogue was believable.
No spoilers, but I have a good iidea where the sequel is headed.
Enjoyable characters, felt like a pilot and went by fast.
With clever writing, the premise could go in many directions.
Wish I could tune back in next week.
Cross between Starsky and Hutch and Law And Order.

Lead Actors were mostly likable, many others seemed like this may be their first acting job. Certain characters felt too on the nose/stereotypical.
I watched to the end hoping to discover what the point of it was and never found it.
The plot was completely disjointed and left you wondering why they even included certain parts. There was a scene where they dove into explicit dialogue and it felt unnecessary, awkward and out of place. I'm still not sure if the director wanted the lead actors to appear to be into each other.
The most audacious part of the movie was the ending - the assumption that there should be a part 2. Just generally seemed kind of amateurish.

The trailer looked promising though when I saw Boll as the director I had some mighty reservations but all for naught. This was a very entertaining cop movie and certainly not deserving the low score it has here. And while there a few weirdly shot scenes the movie despite as others have said being somewhat disjointed is actually well directed. The strength of the entertainment is admittedly because of the two engaging lead actors ( I've seen him in guest parts on shows and a couple of movies; her never ) and their endless entertaining banter had my wife and I laughing quite a bit. If you're a dog lover there's a small subplot that you'll definitely enjoy. The only thing missing was a good cop shootout but like most cops work lives, that doesn't happen very often. If this were a show we'd definitely be watching but suffice that they have a possible part 2 in the works or already made. Be sure to hear the fantastic music at the beginning of the end credits.

One of those movies that probably won't have anything that really sticks with you long term but there isn't really anything egregiously bad here. Some fun scenes, and a couple interesting scenes of action. Some dialogue is quite awkward and some parts of the movie feel like the characters had no reason to do what they ended up doing but I wasn't expecting anything groundbreaking from this. Uwe Boll has made many a bad movie in his time but this is definitely on the better end of his catalogue. I think that the overly negative reviews may be in part to his notorious reputation since over the years he has attracted a vast array of trolls.

Movie #6 in me watching every Uwe Boll movie at least once for a video essay. I took a small break since the last movie I watched and decided for my first one back I'll watch what literally JUST released, especially since the crowdfunding for the POSTAL 2 movie just went up. I do wish I could've seen it in theaters just for personal satisfaction, but I rented it on Amazon and will buy the Blu-Ray in the future.
Probably one of the more serviceable films I've watched recently. It's certainly not unwatchable, but there's some acting that just seems goofy, the whole movie feels weirdly disconnected though and it doesn't feel like some scenes really make any impact. Both main characters are genuinely insufferable for the first 2/3rds of this movie and then they suddenly start to get along. It does have some surprising emotional moments that Work. Generally I wouldn't recommend to watch it unless you're an Uwe Boll fan like me. There's a stinger for a part two eventually which I mean, sure? I'd watch it I guess.

An absolute poorly acted, jumbled up, boring movie disguised as a crime drama? The only drama was how soon it would end. The opening credits followed our detective getting up in the morning, getting dressed and taking public transportation to work. It took so long to get the opening out of the way it was time to roll the closing credits. A lot of dialogue, a lot of riding around New York doing absolutely nothing. The cinematography was different....not good but different. They tried distracting you with unusual shots and sounds to make you forget you were watching a terrible movie. Don't look now...it looks as though there is a part 2 coming. No way no how.
Seriously, this is the kind of movie they make these days? Listening to the first ten minutes dialog was unbelievably boring. I felt like the veteran detective must have felt listening to his new female partner's drivel. I asked myself, and he must also have wondered, is this really what I am going to have to listen to for the next hour and a half? I mean who needs this verbal diarrhea at the beginning of a day or a movie for that matter. They say that if a movie doesnt speak to you in the first 20 minutes, it's not for you & it's not going to get any better. Maybe an action movie needs to start with some action... just sayin'
I went into First Shift hoping for an engaging crime drama, but unfortunately, it fell short on nearly every front. The storyline was weak and lacked cohesion, leaving me uninterested as the plot progressed. The acting, for lack of a better word, was stiff, making it difficult to connect with the characters. The director wanted the audience to bond with them, but that effort failed drastically. The disconnect between the audience and the characters as the movie continues becomes even more apparent.
There was also a glaring lack of attention to detail that made the film less believable. For instance, police cars in New York don't have blue lights, and a detective would rarely be handling a routine traffic stop. Minor inaccuracies like these pulled me out of the story and made the movie feel amateurish.
The movie had some elements that could have worked if they had been executed better, but the poor direction and weak writing ruined any potential. I finished the movie feeling disappointed, wishing it had delivered on the promise of its premise.

In a departure from high-profile blockbusters, this film presents a refreshingly grounded narrative that captivates through its sincerity and charm. The story centers on a seasoned New York detective who, despite his initial reluctance, is paired with a dynamic female officer recently transferred from Atlanta. This classic setup-where a grizzled veteran must adapt to a new partner-forms the backbone of the film's engaging plot.
While the storyline unfolds within the familiar confines of a New York detective thriller, it distinguishes itself through its focus on character development and realistic, heartfelt interactions. The film skillfully delves into the personal backgrounds of its characters, adding depth to their motivations and relationships. Although the antagonists may adhere to certain genre conventions and lack complexity, they serve their role effectively within the narrative.
Overall, the film succeeds in delivering an entertaining and emotionally resonant experience, despite its adherence to genre tropes. Its strength lies in its authentic portrayal of human connections and the understated charm of its characters, making it a worthwhile watch for those who appreciate a more nuanced approach to the detective genre.

We forced ourselves to watch the entire movie "First Shift" in the hope that it would improve, but that proved to be a complete waste of time! It had a bad storyline, bad dialogue, bad directing, bad editing, and so on!
To give you an example, they step into their car while it is raining, start moving, and suddenly it is totally clear and sunny. When they stop and get out of the car only a few blocks away, it is cloudy and raining again, all in Manhattan! The acting is even more ridiculous. One of the characters loses a family member; the next thing you know, she is playing a drinking game with her partner! The ending is the ultimate insult to anyone who tolerated the film that far!
I highly recommend you watch something else and do not waste your time with this movie!

I hate when people write review in the stance that their view is the final view point . Sure you can say you did not like it but don't act like you are a Variety Critic. I thought the two main actors were very good and I like the flow of the film . The gradual connection between partners is true to life as I have had many work partners myself and it takes time to warm up to them and know they are competent and have your back. The side stories are spliced in well and seamlessly add to this short movie. Hope to see a part two like it says. Yes there are different viewers with differing reasons to like a movie. So don't be deterred by a narrow minded , self gratuitous review saying unwatchable.
So, there's a legit view that this pilot cop drama is so incredibly campy and cliche that it had to be taken tongue in cheek. The main character is more Dirty Harry tough gristles detective than anything remotely authentic. Brooding. Hurt. Vulnerable. Cynic. Loner. But loves stray dogs because "they're loyal". Oh, so add betrayed to the list of hard cop cliches. Seriously, my Dad was a cop's cop and his handle was Iron Ass... I know the stereotype.
Pair up with a wise-cracking Barbie Grrrl protagonist with, yep you guessed it, a little eastern religion yoga stchick. And, well, it's going to be a long 1:35 minutes. Long tit tat banter? Check. Out of touch detective with modern elements like social media dynamics... yet, he somehow understands unique posts that could advance hits & viewership?
It keeps going like that... for the entire pilot. Of course, until drama arrives and partners are endangered. Remember that dog? "Loyalty is the virtue", yep, you know where the bad cop study will lead.
You could have had the best cop stars today, and this cliche wouldn't be worth preview... let alone watch.

Mellow pace, no action. When I started it from outside the Paramount+ app I really thought this was a new TV show. Didn't realize until I was half way in that it was a movie.
It feels like a long introduction to a police show and would be a good first episode rather than a movie.
While they take on some cases and there is personal development there is no emotional payoff to any of it. The resolutions to some of the earlier events are wrapped up with a quick scene or two but no mystery is leveled, no real depth to the cases the detectives must solve. You don't even see a lot of leg work. This had potential. Now off to watch the FBI shows!

The movie was somewhat ok, maybe a B. The acting was over the top mainly because the dialog was that way, so what are the actors to do? Made most interactions uncomfortable, at best. However, the most important aspect to me is the soundtrack. The movie opens with the detective having breakfast, or was he brushing teeth? The music was dramatic like we are expecting a team of assassins to burst in. Nope. Just going out the door and driving to the office with the pounding dramatic music going just as strong. Maybe there will be a killing right in front of him. Nope, just shows up at work. The music continues. Time for heart medicine? Adrenaline going. A bomb in the squadroom? Nope, just getting a partner. The music continues to say something really big is going to happen now. Uh, nope. So, no matter what else, this movie showed me that whatever was in the background for other movies was powerful in building some emotion. And whoever put this soundtrack together was lower than amateur, no idea that you change things to suit the mood the director should be setting for each scene. I guess the visual equivalence to this would be the main character firing an automatic weapon constantly through the whole movie. Yeah, wow. Point made. If you are worse than clueless about soundtracks, don't do them for a movie. I can truly say that the power of a soundtrack never hit me so hard in the face as this one. So, uh, thanks for the lesson? I have been trying to figure out how bad the movie would be with a reasonable soundtrack, but the solid distraction is huge. I think it could be just a forgettable B movie if the track didn't keep telling you an explosion or army of killers is just around the corner ALL THE TIME. But then the dialog still is disjointed and much over the top.
It felt like someone tried to make a film without a script, a plan, or even a clue. The plot, if you can call it that, is incoherent at best-a chaotic mash of disconnected subplots stitched together without purpose. Characters appear and disappear like afterthoughts, with no clear goals or emotional depth. Their stories go nowhere, and their dialogue feels robotic, as if they were reading lines for the first time. The acting is lifeless, the direction aimless, and the whole thing reeks of a project that should've stayed in development hell. Any attempts at deeper themes like love or redemption are so clumsily handled they barely register, leaving the audience confused and disconnected. In the end, it's less a movie and more a cautionary tale about how not to make one.
