Yes, the movie follows a familiar formula, one of those films where you find yourself thinking, I've seen so many like this. I agree that it doesn't break new ground or brining something new and similar other movies exist, but there's a catch.

Despite its simplicity, the movie is enjoyable. At the end of the day, it serves its purpose well, that is entertainment.

What makes it stand out? The exceptional acting skills of Christoph Waltz. His performance adds an extra flavour to the old recipe, making it better the film above many others currently being released.

A good popcorn watch, so just do.

Old Guy (2025) is an action comedy movie directed by Simon West and it is literally the same movie I've watched a million times.

Positives for Old Guy (2025): Christoph Waltz, Lucy Liu and the young guy whose name can't remember give decent performances. The action sequences are decent. And finally, the movie does work as background noise for other things.

Negatives for Old Guy (2025): The plot is literally the same old stuff I've seen like a million times before. The plot is very predictable with how everything plays out. You don't remember the names of any of the characters. Things are just happen in the movie for the hell of it. And finally, the movie has very messy pacing.

Overall, Old Guy (2025) is about as generic as an action comedy movie can be.

Old Guy is a comedic reworking of The Mechanic, the 1970s thriller that starred Charles Bronson.

Christoph Waltz is the ageing hitman Danny Dolinski. He still goes clubbing but has an arthritic hand. It means he cannot shoot straight.

His shadowy bosses are modernising. Out go the old timers. In come the young whippersnappers.

Danny has to train the Gen Z new blood, Wihlborg (Cooper Hoffman) who is still wet behind the ears and needs to learn the craft of being a hitman.

They are tasked to kill an Irish mobster, but the job goes south. Now they are the target.

This is a generic comedy thriller that has been done to death in the last few years. The screenplay is anaemic. It wastes the talented cast which includes Lucy Liu who really does not have much to do.

The only interesting thing about this movie is the sheer number of people with producer credits.

Danny Dolinski (Christoph Waltz) is a veteran hitman working for the London mob. He is recovering from hand surgery on his gun hand and expects to return to be the prime assassin. Instead, the organization is going younger and he is to mentor young hitman Wihlborg (Cooper Hoffman). Anata (Lucy Liu) is his longtime friend and nightclub manager.

This is trying to be a comedic crime thriller. I get the concept and it has the potential to work with better writing. Waltz is trying to do some comedy. I don't think that the younger Hoffman is up to the task. Lucy Liu doesn't have much to do. This is rather blah.

... stuff! I had a typo the first time I wrote this ... it typed stiff ... which I guess would be a pun ... but even more unintended than the one in the summary headline. Just saying. But back to the movie - with Waltz ... we have to thank Tarantino for finding this amazing actor. Or rather bringing him to the spotlight.

He may not be ... Nobody - (yes I am referencing the Bob Odenkirk movie), but this is still silly and fun enough. The action is decent ... again not close to the other movie ... just don't compare those. And enjoy this movie for what it is ... a Waltz(er) ... of a movie!

It feels like either the movie was horribly cut, or whoever wrote dialogues and script was plain wasted. Or both. The pauses between phrases are too long, the dialogues end abruptly, the scenes pacing is way off, there's little reason to what's happening, there's no connection between characters - they just utter phrases for (seemingly) the sake of it.

The main character made look not only lacking wrist strength and mobility due to surgery, but lacking any sort of mobility and agility like he's ninety-plus already. The secondary main younger character is plain insufferable. And it's nothing about the actors, it's how the movie is made - I've no recollection of seeing the actor who plays the younger character, but I've plenty of recollections of seeing Lucy Liu and Christoph Waltz, and as great as they are, their characters look just as abysmal here. So it's definitely not an acting issue.

It's just... wasteful. Decent premise, even if not anything new. Great cast. Good potential. All wasted. Sad.

In light British mob dramatic-thriller "Old Guy" the London firm of implausibly young-at-heart titular hit-man Christoph Waltz prepares him for retirement by having him oversee / train young new-age upcoming killer Cooper Hoffman (good) on a 'suicide mission' to Belfast - on which Waltz takes along old friend Lucy Liu (also good). Experienced director Simon West aims for an "In Bruges" feel but Greg Johnson's second screenplay (after the decent "The Last Son") gives it no chance of hitting such heights. Not funny enough to be a comedy, but too silly to be a tense thriller, it falls between the two genres rather than rising as a crossover. Passably entertaining - no more.

Talk about a movie that should be watched on your phone because everyone in it phoned it in. Christopher Waltz is horribly miscast as an aging hitman with an injury, he is about as convincing as Danny Devito's chances of being drafted to the NBA.

Everything in this movie is cheap and forgettable, be it the pathetic car chase or the abysmal digital fire. Literally finished watching this 5 mins ago and I'm struggling to remember any scene of performance worth mentioning.

The only positive is that it's runtime, it feels short and an easy film to have playing in the background when you are doing something else.

If your goal was to watch a film with great action, intrigue and classic hitman/spy vibes then avoid like the plague. This is a mess, wanting to be funny but isn't, wanting to be clever, but isn't, wanting to be entertaining and again isn't. It feels like a movie made for tax write-offs and has roped in a cast that legit are bound by some irreversible contract or ungodly bet.

Old Man definitely hints of The Mechanic & others of a similar genre. Although I do think it was different enough to be very entertaining. Walz is an amazing actor, so for me I enjoyed his performance. I loved the premise, the dry humour, & the juxtaposition of generations. If the script had someone give it a final read through to tweak it, this movie could have delivered much more. The dialogue was at times stilted & awkward & they missed many chances to take advantage of the humourous situations throughout the film. So many pieces of a great movie are here but it doesn't quite live up to it. Still, overall a good movie and solid acting.

I was disappointed to see the low scores on this movie's reviews. It was super entertaining and the cast is great. Anything Christoph Waltz is in is going to be good, then add in Lucy Liu and Copper Hoffman makes it even better. It was funny and has a Guy Ritchie feel without as much intensity. Hoffman is so great in it and his character is the perfect gen z'er. I enjoyed it greatly and will watch it again. Waltz has such a way of adding humor to a character in a sly way without giving an outright joke. Liu is stunning as always and a great supporting member of the cast. The chemistry of Waltz and Hoffman is great.

It's been panned by known, and unknown critics. Yes, it needs better editing, and a better run-time.

The story was good, the money wasn't. Therein lay the problem. We've been conditioned to perfection in films. There's, No. Such. Thing.

Stop cheapening, the value of what's acceptable and profitable. You're only going to lower the bar.

There are so many stories out there, which are both entertaining, and which should be told to further the human existence. We need to understand and acknowledge that, no film will ever be perfect.

This has action, drama, and comedy. It works in most of the right places, and still holds up as an entertaining film.

When I read the synopsis, I thought that this could be a hidden gem even though the rating wasn't too high. So I gave it a try. But, boy! Do I regret watching it. The comedic part wasn't doing it for me. I don't get any laugh from watching this movie, at all. Actually, I think that the heaviest part of this movie isn't action nor comedy, it's drama. The plot is very straightforward with minimum plot twist. So no heavy thinking needed when watching it. And although the acting was decent, I couldn't help but yawning the entire time I watched this movie. It's so dull and unsatisfying, there's no joy that I get after watching it. So if you have other movies lining up in your watch list, I suggest you skip this one. Not worth your time.

Time to Retire the "Old Man in the Club" Trope, We get it-Old Guy wanted to explore themes of aging and proving one's relevance. But does that always have to include the cringeworthy "old man in a nightclub surrounded by women young enough to be his granddaughters" scene? It's tired, delusional, and honestly, just plain creepy. Hollywood needs to let go of this fantasy-it's not edgy, it's not entertaining, it's just uncomfortable. It brought back memories of those unsettling men at the disco who wedge themselves between you and your friends while you're dancing, refusing to take a hint because some outdated movie convinced them that is ok! IT IS NOT.

Christoph Waltz is usually the kind of actor who can elevate even a weak script, but in Old Guy, something felt off. Whether it was the writing or direction, his usual charisma and gravitas were muted.

And why cast Lucy Liu just to reduce her to a cliché? She's a powerhouse actress, yet the film relegates her to little more than a decorative presence. She deserves better.

One bright spot was Wihlborg's character-at least he wasn't the typical Hollywood macho hitman. But that alone couldn't save the film. It wasn't outright terrible, just painfully unmemorable.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would due to its rating... Good storyline, great acting and nice environments!

Really slick plot with good actors where Christoph Waltz always delivers, Lucy Liu was a welcome long-time-no-see, and I loved Cooper Hoffman who, to me, is a new acquaintance in the movies. And to top it off being filmed on location on Northern Ireland, Belfast, in London and Wales, you know you will get beautiful surroundings.

And then the but... It is the shoddy effects! It's seems to be a movie made on a tight budget, but with that said, it's an entertaining 90 min action-comedy.

The first Simon West picture in quite a while that I've genuinely liked.

And it's overall very different from what I expected. It's a feelgood hitman movie, but not with the cynical, sarcastic feel you'd expect from a killer/comedy combo, but with this sweet road movie kinda feel. I like it.

West lets the performances breathe and gives the actors the room they deserve to showcase what they're good at. And they are. Namely Waltz, Hoffman and Liu of course. Who all have great chemistry.

They could have put the first hour into the first 10-15 minutes. Then spent the rest of the time building the two main characters relationship into something rememberable. Not only was there a chemistry between them they had the setting for a budding romance already in. There aren't nearly enough stories about older people finding love. The plot ultimately fails to showcase the talent of Lucy Lu and Christopher Waltz in any rewatchable way. I have no idea why this was billed as an action flick or comedy. None of the action left me on the edge of my seat and I didn't laugh once. Wait to watch this when it's streaming for free so you can fall asleep or turn it off without feeling like you've wasted both time and money.

It wasn't bad, Waltz is a great actor in almost anything. The character he played in the film felt old-fashioned and naive where how can a relatively old spy be a chick magnet. Lucy Liu's performance was average where it was mild in feeling, but not much sparking moments. Cooper Hoffman was impressive in the film and the three of them were able to make the movie watchable, despite the story has its weaknesses. Plenty of action.

Yes. I do judge books by their covers, but it's a continuous process. The cover gets me to page one...and so on.

Something in the first 10 minutes of a movie (preferably 5) should convince you to keep watching. I gave this movie 15. The synopsis gave the outline and the first 3 minutes gave me the rest of the story. Or maybe not. What it did not give me, was one single reason to keep watching.

I just don't care how it continued, much less ended. The writing was terrible. The direction was amateurish and the acting was wooden. What I watched had the personality of a plank.

It wasn't a waste of time because now I know for sure...100%...that this movie is absolutely not worth watching.

The artificial intelligence used in this film was glorious but also ruined it. I wish they would have put a little more work in on the actors IRL but again the artificial intelligence took over too much. I think it's dangerous using AI but it's also a money saver. I'm curious to know why these famous actors even agreed to using AI but here we are conforming to the new ways of filming. The animations are AI and some of the movements are pretty clever so I'm impressed. I feel like this will cause cheaper actors to be involved and quality will become less. We will never see a Hollywood film again such as aliens or Terminator.

Let's face it, the hitman mobster genre was done to death long ago, rejuvenated only by a clever twist here and there. The old guy mentor twist is fine, if done right, but here it's not even close. Chris Waltz looks cringingly old, mainly in his movements, Lucy liu give another non performance, whilst the young sidekick at least has something about him that's fresh and comedic. All the other characters are truly forgettable, a mandatory baddy is'nt even written in.

Production, soundtrack, editing is left waiting for a decent cast and a workable script , none of which are delivered unfortunately.

Give this one a run out, but then retire it to the back shelf.

Instead of the odd-couple fireworks promised by the premise, we get tired tropes-grumpy mentor, sullen prodigy, double-crossing bosses-sketched out with dialogue that never quite sparkles and action sequences that feel recycled from more memorable films.

"Old Guy" isn't unwatchable, thanks mostly to the professionalism of its stars and a handful of sly, self-aware moments, but at only 94 minutes it started to feel a lot longer. It's a bland, overly familiar ride that fails to capitalize on the unique talents assembled. Given the collective charisma and experience of Waltz, Liu, and Hoffman, the finished product feels like a missed opportunity, a reminder that even the best casts can't transcend a flat script and uninspired direction.
