We’re big fans of director John Carpenter’s 1986 action extravaganza Big Trouble in Little China here on JoBlo. We’ve sung its praises with a Revisited video, named it the greatest cult film of all time, and dug into the film’s three best scenes… so we’re very sad to hear that actor Peter Kwong, who played the super-powered martial artist Rain in the Carpenter film, has passed away at the age of 73. According to Variety‘s report, Kwong died in his sleep Tuesday night.

Kwong is best remembered for playing Rain, but that was just one of almost 90 screen acting credits he racked up over the course of a career that stretched back nearly fifty years. Big Trouble in Little China actor Peter Kwong passed away in his sleep on Tuesday night. He was 73.

Kwong played Rain, serving Lo-Pan as one third of the elemental masters known as the Three Storms, in John Carpenter’s 1986 cult classic.

Kwong’s other notable film credits include The Golden Child, Gleaming the Cube, Cooties, Never Too Young to Die, and Theodore Rex.

He also appeared on such TV shows as “Full House,” “Drake & Josh,” “The A-Team,” “MacGyver,” “Lethal Weapon,” “My Wife and Kids,” “Wonder Woman,” and “King of the Hill.”

In addition to acting, Kwong was an accomplished martial artist and dancer; served on the SAG National Board of Directors, AFTRA National Board of Directors, and Television Academy Board of Governors; and was an activist against anti-Asian stereotyping in Hollywood.

Peter Kwong, a martial artist and actor who played one of the Three Storms in Big Trouble in Little China and a henchman in The Golden Child during a prolific acting career and was active in actors union politics and the movie and TV academy leadership, has died. He was 73.

His reps told Deadline that Kwong died overnight Tuesday in his sleep but did not provide other details.

Born on April 9, 1952, Kwong began his screen career in the mid-1970s with guest shots on such TV series as Wonder Woman and Black Sheep Squadron and into the ’80s with Cagney & Lacey, Bret Maverick, The Greatest American Hero, Little House on the Prairie, Dynasty, The A-Team, Miami Vice, 227, St. Elsewhere, Matt Houston and others.

He also had bit parts in features but would land perhaps his most famous role by mid-decade.

With the recent news that Tubi surpassed Max, Disney+ and Paramount+, it got me thinking about how far the service has come. It was mostly just seen as a joke but now it’s beating some of the heavy hitters. I’m not exactly shocked as even my grandparents have proclaimed their love for Tubi. The ease of access is always going to be the biggest winner for the average viewer. Plus the fact that it’s Free doesn’t hurt either. At a time where other streaming services are adding ads of their own and increasing their paid tiers to absurd prices, services like Tubi become more and more appealing.

Tubi has come a long way since its days of direct-to-streaming shlock. Sure, there are classics like Child’s Play, Interview with the Vampire, Pumpkinhead, The Descent and Near Dark. But what about some titles that are more off the beaten path?...

Leigh Whannell has given horror lovers classic franchises like Saw and Insidious, alongside other notable genre entries like the most recent adaptation of The Invisible Man. But hidden within his dark and scary resume is a hilarious zombie flick starring Elijah Wood and Alison Pill. Cooties, which quietly premiered in 2014, takes the classic zombie trope and gives it a hilarious twist, providing unexpected moments and ridiculous action sequences. It’s so vastly different from everything else on his resume, and that’s what makes it extra special. That, and of course, Rainn Wilson.

A Stephen King horror story about a malevolent (sort of) doll almost sounds like something that could've been written specifically for James Wan to turn into a movie. But while the filmmaker behind "Saw," "Insidious," "The Conjuring," and "Malignant" is indeed involved in adapting "The Monkey" -- a short story King wrote for Gallery magazine in 1980 before later including it in his 1985 collection "Skeleton Crew" -- for the screen, he's only lending his services as a producer.

Instead, "The Monkey" is being written and directed by Osgood "Oz" Perkins, son of "Psycho" actor Anthony Perkins and the mind behind such creepily atmospheric and inventively stylized horror pictures as "The Blackcoat's Daughter," "I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House," and "Gretel & Hansel". Osgood Perkins is also currently riding high thanks to the buzz around "Longlegs," his upcoming occult serial killer horror-thriller that boasts one of the most intriguing trailers in recent memory.

ScHoolboy Q has announced his next studio album, Blue Lips.

The Tde rapper confirmed the news with a trailer shared to his website, which also currently boasts a clock counting down to the record’s “intended release date” of March 1st. The 37-second clip takes place in what appears to be a film studio, with what we’ve been led to believe is the album’s tracklist (a whole 17 songs!) projected on the wall.

At the end of the trailer is a dictionary definition for “blue lips,” which reads: “Speechless, especially as the temporary result of shock or some strong emotions.” Ironically, the trailer doesn’t feature any vocals, but there is a mellow, jazzy instrumental that could sound nice with some Q bars.

The trailer embedded on the site via YouTube is set on what looks like a film or television a studio lot, where golf carts, trucks, tents, and workers align towards a large white screen with the track list written across it in the rapper’s signature handwriting. Titles include “Cooties,” “Love Birds,” and “Pigs Feet.

Exclusive: AMC Networks’ Rlje Films has taken North American rights to the Elijah Wood and Luke Kirby dramatic thriller No Man of God, based on real transcripts and conversations between serial killer Ted Bundy and FBI agent Bill Hagmaier. The deal for the Amber Sealey-directed feature went down ahead of the pic’s Tribeca Film Festival premiere in June. The pic is now scheduled to hit theaters in August.

In 1980, Bundy (Kirby) was sentenced to death by electrocution. In the years that followed, he agreed to disclose the details of his crimes, but only to one man, that being Hagmaier (Wood). Aleksa Palladino and Robert Patrick also star in the Kit Lesser-scripted feature.

No Man of God was produced by Wood, Daniel Noah, Lisa Whalen and Kim Sherman. Ward and Jess De Leo of Rlje Films negotiated the deal with Whalen and Stacy Jorgensen on behalf of Company X/SpectreVision and the filmmakers.

Leigh Whannell is in talks to direct Ryan Gosling’s “Wolfman” for Universal, and Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions has signed on to produce the film alongside Gosling, an individual with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap.

Whannell and Blumhouse just collaborated on “The Invisible Man,” which Universal released and grossed $124 million worldwide on a $7 billion budget. Whannell has a first-look deal across film and TV with Blumhouse, and the production banner also produced Whannell’s critically-acclaimed 2018 film “Upgrade.” Over the course of 10 years, Whannell and Blumhouse have collaborated on seven projects.

Whannell will also write the treatment for the film, while Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo will write the script. Plot details of “Wolfman” are currently unknown.

In 2014, directors Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion presented their debut feature, Cooties, a humorous take on the zombie subgenre with infected kids and their teachers as the victims. Later on, in 2017, the directing duo made Bushwick, a peculiar Children of Men-like action thriller with several long takes, in which Dave Bautista and Brittany Snow’s characters try to survive an unsettling armed attack to the titular Brooklyn neighborhood. Now Milott and Murnion are back with another genre effort, this time approaching the home invasion and the revenge subgenres. In Becky, the titular young girl (played by Lulu Wilson) is mourning the death of her mother and even though her father (Joel McHale) is planning to get married...

What if Kevin James was cast as a neo-Nazi? That’s one of the many uninspired questions that Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion’s gruesome “Becky” answers in a movie driven by an increasingly boring set of narrative dares. Others include: What if the protagonist was a teenage girl so angry she could actually kill? What if there was a MacGuffin that was literally a key that didn’t open anything? Even as the movie The pair’s earlier film, “Cooties,” suffered from similar issues, attempting to build a thin idea (what if a zombie pandemic only turned little kids into monsters?) but at least it yielded more entertaining results.

“Becky” is as grim and gruesome as any horror movie in recent memory, but that alone can’t save this gross-out thriller. Still, the story opens with promise, through candy-colored title cards and fast cuts between Becky (the wonderful Lulu Wilson...

Directed by Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott (the filmmakers behind Cooties and Bushwick), Becky is coming to VOD and Digital on June 5th, and the film's trailer offers a look at James' intense character that's a far cry from his comedic roles.
