For Love & Life: No Ordinary Campaign Review – A Story of Activism and Hope
Image
When Brian Wallach received his Als diagnosis at just 37, few could have blamed him for despair. But those who know Brian were unsurprised by his response—instead of surrendering, he resolved to fight for change. Alongside his wife Sandra, Brian founded I Am Als and brought renewed focus to the battle against this devastating disease.

Their story, chronicled in the Prime documentary For Love & Life: No Ordinary Campaign, highlights both personal struggles and political victories. We experience Brian’s declining health alongside the steadfast support of Sandra and their growing family. In more hopeful scenes, charismatic figures like football star Steve Gleason join Brian’s lobbying efforts on Capitol Hill, helping boost research funding and pass new legislation.

Interweaving advocacy work with intimate family moments, the film maintains a delicate balance. Hardships are never minimized, yet optimism remains the overriding tone. Most moving are the candid discussions where Brian...

For Love & Life: No Ordinary Campaign is a moving documentary about one couple’s fight for legislative changes that could offer hope and life to anyone battling Als, commonly called Lou Gehrig’s Disease. This fine documentary follows Brian Wallach and his wife Sandra, in the aftermath of his Als diagnosis, as they fight both the disease and the barriers to treatment that all those with Als face, a battle they fight with courage, energy, creativity and hope.

Remember the “ice bucket challenge?” Yeah, they are the ones who created that.

At age 37, Brian Wallach was on top of the world, with the rosiest future, awaiting the birth of his second child with his wife Sandra. The couple had met while working on a progressive political campaign, and they seemed to be the perfect match.

‘For Love & Life: No Ordinary Campaign,’ Inspiring Story Of Couple Who Founded I Am Als, Draws Support From Katie Couric & Phil Rosenthal – Deadline Studio at Prime Experience
Image
Brian Wallach has more fight in him, more grit, than seems humanly possible.

The attorney and former Obama White House staffer was diagnosed with Als at the age of 37. He could easily have resigned himself to a cruel and unfair fate at that point, but instead he and his wife Sandra Abrevaya chose to battle on – not just for themselves and their family, but to benefit everyone affected by Als and other conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Their story is told in the documentary For Love & Life: No Ordinary Campaign, which premieres May 28 on Prime Video.

Watch the interview here and see photos from the event below.

“I am most proud of the fact that we took a disease that nobody knew and made it a centerpiece in the fight against neurodegenerative diseases,” Wallach said as he made an appearance at the Deadline Studio at Prime Experience in Hollywood.

No Ordinary Campaign (2022)
SXSW: Fighting for Als Care in "No Ordinary Campaign"
No Ordinary Campaign (2022)
by Abe Friedtanzer

There are many diseases and medical conditions that may be known by name to a large percentage of the public without there being any true understanding of what they are. One of the most prominent is Als, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a neurodegenerative disease with an unpromising life expectancy for those diagnosed. As the stirring new documentary No Ordinary Campaign explores, there is much that can be done to combat Als, but there are important changes required within the system to help offer hope to those who are currently facing a death sentence.

At the center of No Ordinary Campaign is Brian Wallach, who met his wife Sandra while working on President Barack Obama’s campaign and was diagnosed with Als at age thirty-seven...

‘Tetris’ Review: Taron Egerton In Sensational Video Game Origin Story That Plays Like A Nail-Biting Cold War Spy Thriller – SXSW
Image
Full disclosure: Sue me but not only have I never played the iconic ’80s video game Tetris, I had never heard of it before encountering this new film Tetris, which world premiered tonight at SXSW and comes from Apple Original Films. I realize that probably makes me a bit of an oddity to the gamer generation, but I can only say my lack of knowledge on this product did not hurt one bit in being wildly entertained by a movie that tells its origin story. In fact it seems to be part of an encouraging but unlikely new genre this young year: movies all about the backstory of well-known products. BlackBerry from IFC and Paramount, Flamin’ Hot from Searchlight, and now Tetris from Apple have been on display this week at SXSW (BlackBerry actually premiered at Berlin), and if you think watching the emergence of a smartphone, a Cheetos brand...

Former Pres. Obama, Katie Couric, Als Patient And Advocate Brian Wallach Reconnect At SXSW For Documentary ‘No Ordinary Campaign’
Image
For Brian Wallach, the symptoms began with a tremor in his left hand – an unexpected development for a man of only 36. By that age he already was a veteran of the Obama White House, a Georgetown Law graduate and a former track athlete at Yale, where he got his undergraduate degree.

Within a few months, doctors confirmed the cause of that tremor, giving Wallach a devastating diagnosis: Als, a neurodegenerative disorder without cure. He had just become a father for the second time with his wife Sandra Abrevaya, but his medical team told him he would not live to see another year.

Brian Wallach and wife Sandra Abrevaya attend the ‘No Ordinary Campaign’ SXSW screening on March 12, 2023 in Austin, Texas.

That was 2017 and today Wallach has lived longer and accomplished far more than just about anyone could have predicted. His story, and how he, his wife, and their allies managed...
