Surly if your a film maker you would have watched other films of this ilk. Either because you like those sort of movies and it inspired you to try something different or you've done some research by watching or reading stories about being stranded with sharks. But alas it's the same old trope.
To be honest, it's fairly limited using this sub-genre. But with some clever thinking you could add some twists or tricks and you could make it a bit more interesting. For example they did have some basic equipment that they could have used in a clever way, but it is quickly forgotten and never mentioned or used again.
The research on the behaviour of sharks is wholly inadequate and inaccurate. Again, with a bit of thinking you could have applied real world experiences and observations in to the story, but nothing.
This movie ended up being a bit of a.

This film was absolutely fine, but don't be expecting anything new... you won't find it here. I liked the characters, they had a strong friendship and on the whole they behaved fairly sensibly. The actresses did a fine job. And the setting is beautiful. So that's all good!
The problem is that we've seen it all before... it's very predictable and that's a real shame. There also isn't enough shark/s in my opinion- which unfortunately makes it a pretty tame watch.
It's one of those movies that you'll watch once and that's it. Definitely doesn't compare to the likes of The Shallows or even 47 Metres Down.

Ridiculous premise from the outset.
It is like an Enid Blyton novel, 'Five Diverse Babes Go lesbian Relationship Counselling At Sea'. What could possibly go wrong?
Obviously, the film is low budget and in this case, it shows.
The direction is basic. The script divests you of feeling for the protagonists whose characterisation is quite two dimensional.. The plot is ridiculous and written with stupid characters making stupid decisions and written by people who have no idea about shark behaviour.
Although I did say it was low budget there are some drone and cityscape establishing shots but I have no idea what relevance they have to the main part of the story.
'I can't pee, if you are looking at me'.......they are all stranded in the water at sea. Laugh out loud funny. Very nearly 'Showgirls, so bad it's good' bad.

This film had promise from the trailer (albeit with a story lacking any sense of originality but that's fine - sometimes we just want a good shark film).
The strength in this film is with how it doesn't show the shark to start with, other than a fin. A page taken from Jaws' playbook but, when that fin "looks" to do a handbrake turn when the shark senses blood, we know we're in trouble and everything is about to go downhill... And it does.
The over head shots of the shark in the water are okay but the constant - shark lunging for victim - shots are some of the worst CGI I've seen. But this isn't the worst thing about this film. That "accolade" goes to the acting and stupid script.
Example of script:
Women in water, shark circling them. They panic (fair).
One of them cracks a "joke" about dying from a shark attack in Manchester due to global warming. The women start to laugh whole-heartedly. THERE IS A SHARK CIRCLING YOU AND ONE OF YOU IS BLEEDING TO DEATH!!!!
I could say more but honestly, I'm annoying I wasted 86 minutes of my life on this. Give it a skip and remember the name of those who made this atrocity so you can avoid future work too. It's THAT bad.

Something in the Water is a new thriller directed by Hayley Easton Street, who makes her real directorial debut with this film after some short films.
Before a wedding, the bride's group of friends decide to take a boat trip before the wedding. When one of the friends is bitten by a hair while swimming, the friends rush back to the boat.
Due to the panic that has arisen, they hit a rock during the return trip, which causes the boat to sink and the five of them end up in the open water with a dangerous shark lurking.
This film is being sold as a mix between the films Jaws and Bridesmaids, only without the talent behind these films. Due to the poorer script and direction, you don't really care about most of the characters during the film. The more novice actresses receive little or no guidance.
When the characters are also stupid because of the weak script. Or making separate decisions only makes you care less about them. You almost hope that the shark catches them quickly, so that the film can end earlier.

When I stumbled upon this 2024 thriller titled "Something In the Water" by random chance here in 2024, of course I opted to sit down and watch it. First of all, it was movie that I hadn't already watched, much less actually heard about. And the fact that it was a shark movie was just some sweet icing on the cake, because there is just something entertaining about shark attack movies.
I had zero expectations to writer Cat Clarke and director Hayley Easton Street, so they had every opportunity to entertain and impress me with this movie.
The storyline was actually okay. Sure, I mean, this has all been done and seen before in other similar shark movies, so it wasn't as if writer Cat Clarke was reinventing the shark attack movie genre here. But on the plus side, if you enjoy traditional shark attack movies with young people marooned at sea, then "Something In the Water" should prove entertaining for you. I have to say that I was adequately entertained throughout the course of the movie.
I wasn't familiar with a single actress on the cast list, but I found the acting performances to be adequate. Sure, it wasn't stellar award-winning performances, but then again, I wasn't expecting such from a movie about girls being marooned at sea with a shark circling about. But all in all, fair acting performances for a movie such as this.
A bit of a nice pun, actually, that the name of the character played by leading actress Hiftu Quasem was Meg, which is also a shortened name for the Megalodon shark.
The shark was actually nicely made and did come off as being real and believeable enough, which did help add to the overall impression and enjoyment of the movie. It was definitely a good thing that the shark wasn't horrible CGI leftovers from the 1990s, like in so many other shark attack movies.
Director Hayley Easton Street delivered a wholesome movie that proved to be entertaining. While it certainly was no "Jaws", then "Something In the Water" actually is enjoyable for single viewing if you enjoy shark movies. I have to say, though, that there is zero replay value to the movie, as the script just doesn't have the contents to support more than a single viewing.
All in all an enjoyable movie. My rating of "Something In the Water" lands on a six out of ten stars.

Quickly I began cheering for the shark .
Why you ask ?
Because the whole plot feels false and contrived. It tries so hard, so very very hard, to make you care about the characters and their relationships. Yet fails utterly .
I think you're suppossed to feel the warmth of their relationships and see them as real people. So you can feel their loss when the Shark has dinner.
Instead, it is portrayed in such a shallow and cringeworthy way, that you hope the Shark has seconds plus a good dessert .
The film lacks any relevant information for you to give a damn, except perhaps to hope the shark dines well on the blandness.
Whatever is in the water, it aint a good story.

I'm not typically a fan of shark movies, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. The film boasts great cinematography, supported by a very clever score, which kept me on the edge of my seat multiple times. The all-women cast directed by a female director is a refreshing approach, offering an entertaining movie with more suspense than gore, peppered with some funny one-liners.
This genre is notoriously difficult to tackle. If you're expecting full-on gore, you might be disappointed. It's clear that the budget constraints posed some challenges, and the script could have been tighter. However, the cinematography, location, acting, and the exceptional score more than compensate for the gaps that the most critical viewers might notice.
Any movie can be picked apart for flaws, but it's important to consider the context. For a low-budget indie film, Easton-Street managed to elevate the script and keep us on the edge of our seats. Overall, it's a fantastic job that deserves recognition.

"Something in the water" looked different enough from all the other shark movies we've had in the past. Its a British "open water" with more characters. So in some ways was more interesting and could do more. But does it sink or swim? Unfortunately it sinks.
The movies just not very good. Most of the characters are more annoying than the screamy girl from "Jaws 2," and there are alot of unlikely things said or done in the movie. The order of deaths and when they happen is also mostly predictable.
But there are a couple of decent moments in there, and the CGI is used sparingly. But this is probably because its bad when it starts to get used more toward the end.

Attending a special marriage ceremony, a group of friends trying to get through a traumatic incident in their past at a lavish resort where they decide to take a trip together to sort out their issues, but when an accident strands them in the water they find themselves hunted by a ravenous killer shark.
Overall, this was a solid if somewhat underwhelming genre effort. One of the better features here is the strong first half setting everything up as a way of getting to know the group of friends in here. The early tragedy that split them up and the wedding that brings them back together comes off well enough as this takes a rather heartbreaking real-life occurrence to split up the one couple and uses that as a way of building up the kind of strain between them that feels logical why they're not where they used to be. With the marriage celebration proving to get the job done when they arrive and get to the island which is all enough here to get to know who they are, what they've become, and follow along with what they're attempting to accomplish during the trip. That sets up some intriguing enough series of survival thriller scenarios that are presented throughout here. The first attack on the group which forces them to make a fateful trip back to shore only to get stranded when an accident forces them into the water where they find the shark that initially started everything is following the group as they try to make it back to safety. These first action scenes offer the kind of chilling real-world scenarios where the means through which they have to get out of the situation only to find a new one has popped up which requires attention is all fun enough even without the few shark attacks that are quite brutal and graphic for this type of feature. With a fun finale offering some decent action and thrills along the way, this one comes off rather well although there are some big flaws with this one that hold it down. The biggest issue with the film is that its storyline construction offering up the kind of setup it has means that it falls prey to the slew of issues playing everyone of the similar types of films in this style. The whole idea of the group going through the kind of idiotic decision-making that continually places everyone in the situation they are in through mistakes and stupidity is a major factor here, keeping everything from generating the kind of suspense it really should have. On top of that, the sharks themselves are presented far more as an obstacle to overcome on their journey back to land rather than anything else as none of the encounters have that sense of danger a killer shark film is supposed to have at its core. These all manage to bring the film down for the most part.
Rated R: Graphic Language and Graphic Violence.

I usually enjoy shark movies, and even when they are bad, which most of them are, I can typically find a few enjoyable aspects in them. "Something in the Water" initially seemed promising despite its low rating, but I decided not to let that influence me.
The movie tells the story of five women who meet because of a wedding. Before the big day, they decide to have an adventure and sail out to a deserted island in a small boat. Early on, the main character and her ex-girlfriend, who no longer get along due to a violent assault they suffered in the opening scene, are left alone on another part of the island. The other women justify leaving them there by saying they need to work through their differences and rebuild their friendship.
Our protagonist is traumatized by the assault and continues to struggle with the trauma daily, a trope that feels overused and fails to generate sympathy. Instead, it creates a protagonist who is difficult to root for. In fact, most of the characters are unlikeable, and this only worsens as the movie progresses.
The women eventually reunite and go swimming in shallow water. The first shark attack is laughably bad, with unrealistic execution and awkward acting that makes the scene feel uncomfortable and strange. The lack of gore in these moments robs the film of any sense of real threat.
Soon, the five characters are stranded in the ocean with a sunken boat and a persistent shark that refuses to leave them alone. While I can suspend disbelief about the shark's relentless behavior, since it is necessary for the plot, the constant poor decisions made by the characters are impossible to ignore. This makes them even more annoying and unlikable.
The movie is also highly unrealistic, and the shark's behavior becomes increasingly absurd as the story progresses. Ultimately, the film has little to offer beyond its basic premise, which could have been enjoyable if not for the poor decisions, irritating characters, and implausible scenarios.
On the positive side, the shark effects are decent, and the overall production value seems solid. These elements show that the movie had potential, which makes its failure even more disappointing. [4,0/10]

Something in the Water pleasantly surprised me and ended up being a very enjoyable hour and a half. I laughed, I jumped and I generally invested in the characters. Obviously we are not talking Jaws or it's modern CGI spawn like the Meg or a shark invasion under the French capital but as a low budget indie films go it did well. Just like the Spielberg original the director went for the less is more on the CGI sharks which let's you brain fill in the gaps and helps disguise the budget. A great offering for a directorial debut I think we will be seeing more from Hayley Easton Street.
If I had a moan it would be about the volume at the beginning of the film but I later found out the Odean Lux Haymarket had failed to get the levels right and that's why it kicked in after quarter of an hour.

Good evening, everyone! I'm Mr. C Reviewer, and tonight we'll be diving into the film Something in the Water. I had the opportunity to watch the movie on Netflix. This movie originally premiered on March 22, 2024, and has a runtime of 1 hour and 26 minutes. It is rated for viewers aged 15 and older. Something in the Water grossed approximately $1,462,231. As someone on the autism spectrum, I found subtitles to be incredibly helpful, greatly enhancing my ability to follow the dialogue throughout the film. The film was directed by Hayley Easton Street and written by Cat Clarke.
Summary: The joyous celebration of a Caribbean wedding among a close-knit group of friends takes a terrifying turn when their idyllic boat trip capsizes, plunging them into a harrowing struggle for survival against the relentless threat of sharks in the open ocean.
Review: -The film's opening sequence is crucial, immediately establishing the narrative's foundation. It introduces the central figures and their interconnected dynamics, setting the stage for the unfolding drama. A pivotal moment, a violent attack on Meg, serves as a catalyst, generating significant tension and conflict that propels the story forward. I appreciated how the film masterfully wove themes of survival, the value of friendships, and the effects of past trauma into a suspenseful shark thriller. The film's opening, while establishing the setting and introducing the characters, felt somewhat sluggish, and the narrative's momentum seemed to falter in the final act. The tension built throughout the first two acts dissipated, replaced by a shift towards melodrama. Furthermore, the infrequent appearances of the shark ultimately undermined the suspense, preventing it from being sustained effectively throughout the movie. I found the flashbacks in the film to be a compelling narrative device. They effectively illuminated the characters' emotional burdens and the underlying tension, ultimately shaping their choices and behaviours. These glimpses into the past provided crucial context, revealing the personal triggers and memories that fuelled their present actions. I was thoroughly impressed by the film; the performances were captivating, and the characters felt incredibly authentic. The actresses portrayed their roles with remarkable dexterity, demonstrating both skill and fortitude, especially in navigating the challenging water sequences. The almost entirely female cast provided a refreshing and unique perspective, making the film a memorable experience. The film's dialogue captivated me, fostering a profound sense of authenticity in the characters' interactions and strengthening the emotional resonance of their bonds. I found the film's audio design to be a significant strength, with the score masterfully building suspense and elevating the overall cinematic experience.
-The convincingly realistic gore further amplified the film's impact. I appreciate how the film uses on-screen text to effectively communicate the time elapsed between a scene, enhancing my understanding of the narrative's progression. The underwater cinematography captivated me, showcasing the characters' fragility with stunning visuals. I was particularly struck by the use of expansive, wide shots that made the characters seem minuscule against the immense ocean, a technique that amplified their vulnerability. Furthermore, the breath-taking overhead shots brilliantly conveyed the feeling of being utterly stranded at sea, immersing me in their desperate situation.
-While the film's conclusion was somewhat foreseeable, its emotional resonance remained undeniable, leaving a lasting impression.
I rate each film I watch out of 10 and for this one, I give it a 6.8 Remember this was what I thought about the movie personally and I suggest that you give it a go for yourself.

After an unprovoked attack, a couple split, their friends try to bring the couple to their senses, by leaving them on an island, but their good intentions turn to horror, as they find themselves stranded in shark infested waters.
I keep on hoping for a good shark movie, but it seems as though they're few and far between. This one isn't as ridiculous as Ghost Shark or Shark side of the moon, it takes itself a little more seriously, but it's still a little nonsensical.
There's nothing new here, we have genuinely seen it all a tonne of times before, but I can't say it's bad or unwatchable, it just lacks tension and excitement.
It looks nice, some really great location work, the sharks look decent, even if they're behaving in a somewhat odd manner.
The characters, though well acted are a little irritating, so don't be surprised if you find yourself rooting for team shark.
5/10.

A WASTE OF TIME - A CRITICAL REVIEW OF "SOMETHING IN THE WATER"
"Something in the Water" is a cinematic disaster that fails on all critical aspects, from the script to the execution. This film is a clear example of how not to approach the shark survival genre. Here is a detailed analysis of why this film deserves only one star.
WEAK AND PREDICTABLE SCRIPT The script is extremely weak and filled with clichés. The plot follows a group of friends who face a shark while adrift at sea. Instead of presenting something new or intriguing, the film recycles the same old tropes we've seen in dozens of other genre films. The decisions made by the characters are absurdly illogical, making it impossible to sympathize with or care about any of them.
INADEQUATE AND UNBELIEVABLE RESEARCH The lack of research on shark behavior is glaring. The portrayal of the shark in the film is completely unrealistic, from its size to its predatory actions. This is especially frustrating given the easy access to accurate information about these animals. Films like "Jaws" set a standard for shark depiction, and "Something in the Water" fails miserably to follow that example.
FORCED DIVERSITY AND DISCONNECTED THEMES The attempt to insert themes of diversity and global warming is so forced it becomes almost insulting. The inclusion of lesbian characters and the mention of global warming seem more like a superficial attempt to tick boxes on a political agenda rather than to enrich the narrative. These elements are introduced so awkwardly that they end up being unnecessary distractions rather than meaningful additions to the story.
MEDIOCRE DIRECTION AND ACTING The direction is basic and lacks any creative vision. The actors' performances are exaggerated, and the dialogues are forced and unnatural. The attempt to create drama among the characters, especially with the central lesbian relationship, is superficial and does not contribute to the tension or development of the plot. Instead of creating empathy, these moments end up being irritating and unnecessary.
POOR QUALITY VISUAL EFFECTS AND CGI The visual effects are one of the film's weakest points. The shark's CGI is incredibly poorly done, which removes any sense of danger or realism. The scenes that should be tense and exciting become laughable due to the low quality of the special effects.
CONCLUSION "Something in the Water" is a complete waste of time. With a predictable script, inadequate research, forced diversity, and poor visual effects, this film fails on all levels. The only emotion it provokes is the frustration of having wasted time watching something so poorly executed. For those looking for a good shark movie, this one should be avoided at all costs.

Take everything that we all love about thrillers and shark movies...and then use nine of that.
The story if you could call it that...has 6 girls going to a tropical paradise. One has a wedding that couldn't shut about what wedding events she was missing 100% of the movie regardless of the situation.
Most of the script was horrific. I had to double check I was watching the right movie because the first half hour is just teenage girl conversations.
Zero plot Zero story Terrible acting Horrible CGI shark and was so absent from the movie it hardly was a shark movie.
The most pleasant parts of the movie was the cast getting killed off. Which took way too long to happen.
Script and acting was so bad that the fast forward button the remote was the only way I could endure getting through this at all
Worst movie of its type I have seen to date.

I love a good shark movie and I generally don't go in with high expectations because this is a tough genre to nail. This wasn't just awful, this was dreadfully awful. People giving this a 10 on here or saying they enjoyed it, you've been paid to write those reviews. The acting was abysmal, the effects were abysmal (noted it was low budget and boy could you tell). What irritated me the most was how casual the characters when there's a very big possibility they were going to be chomped by a shark. Even the first character who was bitten in the water, she says I'm fine without any panic or fear that something sinister was in the water. Just so dumb and silly like why even bother. Daft to the core. Like my husband said 'we're gna need a bigger nope'! Do something better with your time and skip this snooze fest!
