The best Scoobydoo series even if not scooby

This is based on books and so not meant to be scooby doo. Also no dog but it feels like scooby. 4 kids investigating supernatural mysteries.

Even if this is set in (Indonesia I think) and the Fred character is a young Indonesian and the shaggy is a blond sort of good looking white guy, they make a better scooby team than any of the adaptations I've seen (11.2022).

Well filmed, well acted, nice use of the local legends. A change from the US or UK settings.

It's fun, a bit spooky but not super scary.

Any fans of the style should watch this.

I enjoyed it. Each episode got better.

Not sure what else to say.

Woefully terrible but fun for families

This series is quite honestly painful to watch if you're over the age of 10 and have seen any good film/ series and for many people around the age of ten are still scared of some of the spirits with in the movie.

Personally I'm more terrified of the terrible acting, writing and animation than anything. The writing is terrible, there are a handful of conversations and interactions which aren't cheesy/ cringey or overly forcing and emphasizing their point. There's a plot twist or false cliff hanger every other episode and you couldn't predict in anyway what it would lead to with very minimal foreshadowing which is mostly overwhelmed by the terrible acting.

Not all the actors are terrible, and heck maybe it's the director's fault who told them to act obvious and make every gesture and nuance blown out of proportion by a factor of thirty. All though personally the performance given off by Idan Aedan, Chen Yixing and Yu-Beng Lim was the best all round, all though all seemed over exaggerated at times.

The animation is equally painful to see with some of the spirits and monsters seeming more like play-do at 12K and really zoomed in rather than actual living things.

BUT, if you're looking for something that the whole family can watch and relatively enjoy whilst relatively entertaining for all audiences than this wouldn't do a terrible job. All though being up against other Netflix original shows such as Dragon prince which are much better written and are much more enjoyable.

The cinematography wasn't excellent but it was also good enough to get by and at times carried the show through, and all though not something that I'm usually very good at spotting the wardrobe, backdrop and props where great especially given the low quality of everything else.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone who isn't dying for a cringey, Halloween series that doesn't take itself too seriously and is 7+. Any other demographic would struggle to enjoy this series through all it's 13 episodes.

Fun Family Series

It's family horror series that's reminiscent of Goosebumps, except the monsters are drawn from the folklore/horror traditions of southeast Asia. Unlike some comparable family/YA Nextflix series like The Irregulars or Dead Boy Detectives, which are tonally and thematically all over the place, this show is reasonably wholesome and it's charming in its consistent simplicity. The mysteries, monsters and intrigue are on the level of Scooby Doo and production values aren't much better. But the young main cast and a few supporting adults are affable and the show's brisk pace helps to keep the proceedings engaging.

Such potential wasted

I live in peranakan culture and i know that the Nusantara archipelago has a lot of culture including the assimilation of a lot of culture.

One thing that baffles me is the mismatch reality of how crowded singapore is and how it's potrayed in the series, which almost empty. The problem is that most horror movie does not really goes along with modern technology, its just makes all the mystery illogical.

Second, there's too many ghost that's not even in south east asia. For example Jikiniki is japanese. The chinese hopping vampires are not South east asian culture, and the lore itself does not match it. If you're bitten by a vampire, then you're become a vampire and you are mortally damaged by sunlight. In this case, the vampire immune to sunlight.

The dialogue is attrocious especially when they try to use Bahasa (indonesia/melayu) in the series. They speak even more rigid than a formal news anchor. And i "love" how they have no accent at all, makes it very "believable".

For example, Thai movies are making horror comedy, but they are still scary but funny as well. I don't know what genre is this series. It's not horror and it's definitely not comedy. More like, "look at me! I'm a diverse movie!"

And lastly!! I love it when they somehow can read ancient java/sunda script out of the blue.

One of the worst shows I've ever seen

Don't get fooled by the positive reviews! I fell for it and after watching the show, I'm fully convinced that they were left by the cast or friends and family of the cast. I really wanted to love it and was super excited about seeing one of my fav childhood books being turned into a series. I was left utterly disappointed.

The acting was atrocious! The worst one was Caleb Monk (Nat). My nephew's kindergarten classmates gave a much more natural performance for their drama performance than he did. Caleb should seriously consider changing his career path. He honestly seems to think that acting = constant overexaggerated expressions, movements and manner of speaking. Perhaps, he would be more suited to being a mime. As for the other young casts, they were not as bad as him, but still a long way off from being considered good. There's still hope for them to improve w more training. Citing it being a teen show isn't an excuse for the poor acting as some have suggested - just take a look at other teen shows like Riverdale and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

All in all, a huge disappointment and waste of time!

So much fun!

While it has it's slightly cringeworthy and cheesy moments, it is a very fun watch! The concept of teens hunting monsters and other supernatural beings is far from new, but this show places a unique spin on it! With likeable characters with realistic storylines and responses to the situations they find themselves in, Mr Midnight portrays a relatable character experience.

Personally, I really loved learning about the different cultural elements of Singapore, especially the different mythology stories. I also liked how each episode contained and almost standalone story, so that you could almost watch any episode and be able to understand it.

I definitely recommend giving this show a try, it is the perfect show to lightheartedly binge watch to relax!

More you watch worst it is

Trailer looked good, some reviews were very interesting so started to watch it, and such a dissapointment.

Ok its asian based spooky story, potential is there for sure and it looks like to be based on some kind of book, however it is so ... targeted for very young, trying some comedy, on the other side trying to have horror points. Ending all arround and noting good.

Acting is one second very asian crazy comedy, immediatelly trying to be very serious, then teen "sabrina wibe", point of obvious horror scares you see miles ahead and back to soap teen opera.

I love shows like Supernatural, Grimm, Wednesday is one of amazing shows. This one not even get to level of worst episodes.

I am at 4th part and thinking if speed it up to at least see what is going on in global scale, or abandon it completely.

Great fun from start to finish.

Aimed at younger teens but Mr Midnight has something for everyone. We watched it with the family and all really enjoyed it.

It's a lot of cheesy fun with genuinely hilarious and spooky moments. I especially liked learning about Indonesian/Singaporean folk tales. A different world which gave quite a new and refreshing take on the monster/teen adventure genre.

The cast were great, the monster designs were AWESOME! Just a really fun ride from start to finish.

Maybe it's a little cheesy and goofy, but nothing wrong with that from time to time.

I recommend it if you're looking for a new show. I wasn't familiar with the books beforehand.

Nice concept, poor execution

I'm not too familiar with Singapore as I've only visited briefly on a layover but the whole corruption and poor infrastructure portrayed in the streets doesn't seem to ring true in not only one of the smallest countries in the world, but one that is also the most developed country in south-east Asia that have rigid rules and laws on social and environmental development.

I think the cheesy dialogue makes sense because from what I understand it's based on a popular children's book series so it definitely fit the intended audience, kids and young teenagers. However, the acting is terrible, especially from Caleb Monk. All he does is suppressing his own laughter, he smiles at the most random moments and it really makes him come off as a major creep from episode 1. The main character (Idan Aedan) is also pretty terrible but definitely not even close as bad.

The props and special effects makeup is really enjoyable and one of the best parts of the show. Love that they are using more traditional means to bring the spirits and monsters to life. Really enjoy that the monsters from many different traditions and cultures are portrayed but it'd be great if they addressed more where they originate from. I also think the story is overall great but I think the poor choice of actors and that sometimes the context gets lost in the rest of plot it takes away so much from the storyline.

What a waste of time

Mr Midnight has been my favourite book series since I was a kid, now I'm all grown up and there's a show about it and it's a whole trash show. Don't waste your time honestly. First episode was okay but it just kept going down the drain. The actors have extremely bad acting skills, especially Nat, why does he try so hard? They tried sounding so Asian when they say the Bahasa words but it's just so bad.

And then there's the ghosts or spirits whatever they wanna call them, and it's just such bad acting as well. It a horror show, I think not lol. It's not scary and not worth investing time in to watch a show that is this bad.

I don't know how people think that this show is good. They must have never really watched proper horror films 🤣🤣

Super fun watch!

Definitely one for young teens and those young at heart! My 12 yr old and I thought we'd give it a go and ended up bingeing it over 3 days. We had no previous knowledge of the book series it's adapted from, and were able to go into it with no expectations and open to anything.

We loved the way each Mr Midnight episode had a short story, while there was an overarching storyline across the whole season. The effects were well done, definitely a little cheesy at times (spaghetti anyone?!), but everything about it left us wanting more.

Mr Midnight is well written, with humour dotted throughout, relatable characters, and the Singaporean location and cultural aspects were really interesting.

I would highly recommend Mr Midnight - a lighthearted, supernatural, fun series!

Teen Horror Comedy with south Asian urban legend

It is CRINGEWORTHY.. also so much confusion because it said it;s in Singapore but most of the area doesn't feels like Singapore at all, and that's kinda off putting it you are locals.

But on the other hand, it s telling stories about lots of Asian urban legend, and that's so Much fun personally for me. If you are south Asian and or growing up in south Asian country you will be familiar of all this urban legend, ghost and ghoul portrayed in this series, that's why I give 8 for the nostalgic moment this series bring up to me. (It's because I can't give 7.5)

it is tho after-all Teenagers comedy horror movie, so don't take it seriously and just enjoy the story... and there you go, you have fun watching it, this some sort of nostalgic for me because this all ghost and ghouls I know since I was young ages, and all the urban legend that are familiars.. even they do the Asian Vampire (who jumped around) and unlike western vampires who basically Dracula. So yeah, for me its so much fun to watch... for the nostalgic part.

The acting could be better imo, but it's not really off putting, and there is some awkward moment when they speak Bahasa (as I am Indonesian) so it doesn't sound right and messed up in anyway if you imagine this is Singaporean movie, than the Bahasa language and the location just doesn't add up... but anyway, I enjoy watching this.

I waste mi 10 min

I only managed to watch ten minutes of whatever it was. I watched it on netflix with the original English audio, their English is so bad that it hurts my ears, the acting is below amateur level, very very bad choice of actors, in fact there is not a single thing that is interesting in this, whatever it is. I really don't understand why things like this are filmed at all, someone would have create better content than this for their high school amateur project, it's hard to evaluate something like this at all, where there is not a single thing that you can evaluate in a positive sense. I'm sorry, but I wouldn't recommend this to anyone!

Absolutely loved this show! What a gem!

It is a blend of Ghostbusters, Goosebumps and stranger things in a Singaporean setting! This show is deeply rooted in Singaporean culture and is overall a super fun ride!

The characters are super fun, all of them fresh faces from my point of view. This show is something I didn't know I wanted. The episodes are one off adventures with a little continuity.

A great Halloween watch! This is my first exposure to Singaporean entertainment and so far it has been amazing! This show has the right amount of fun cheesiness and seriousness. It's adapted from a book series called Mr. Midnight. I don't know if there will be a season 2, but I'm happy with what we got so far.

Fun! ...and Scary

It's a movie for young teens but I assure adults are not going to be disappointed either. It was scary and story (with a twist at the end) was great watching. Prosthetics of characters were professional and not like some childish ones that we see in low budget movies.

We watched all 13 episodes in one go, it was super entertaining and engaging! Good direction with one episode nicely linked to the next.

On the family sentiment - the movie moved along well showing good understanding and respect between youngsters and parents/adults. Also great friendship between the youngsters who stood for each other despite being gripped in fear!!!

Movie ended in a suspense and we are hoping for Season II soon.

Fun and Cute

I really enjoyed this and had a lot of fun watching.

It reminded me of Scooby Doo, or Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but in a very different setting, with very different types of ghosts and monsters. It was a lot of fun to watch, and I literally laughed out loud at parts because it was really campy and funny.

The kids were likable, and some of the adults were too (which rarely happens in teen movies). That was a really nice change of pace, as I find a lot of the characters in movies are pretty unlikable and I struggle to care what happens to them. I did care about these kids though.

I'm not in the right age demographic for this, but as an older lady, I found this thoroughly fun and entertaining.

I.

Wholesome family entertainment

Mr. Midnight: Beware the Monsters is wholesome entertainment for the family. Delighted with the happy mix of horror and humor. The Mr. Midnight kids are normal kids in extraordinary situations. The comic relief to the horror is artful. The good-triumphs-over-evil storyline is played out in a novel Asian supernatural context. The diverse characters join forces to solve problems. Absolutely stunning. Family support and values are upheld and treasured, with much love and understanding. It shows how parents can do the same. My 12 year old niece enjoyed it immensely. I enjoyed watching her reaction. Highly recommended.

Amazing series!

This series was absolutely amazing! It gave me the Goosebumps vibes but with an Asian twist and personality - which made it so much more enjoyable because it's relatable.

The series is fun to watch from start to finish! Scary yet funny and cheesy. Great series to binge on Halloween!

Actors were amazing too! Fresh faces with a mix of familiar faces too. Everyone portrayed their characters perfectly.

It's really nice to see our Asian series with such superb quality and great storytelling. I would love to see a second season because c'mon! It's a really good show!

Great job to everyone involved in this production - it's really good!

Stick with it

My advice is to stick with the show. The first episode was bad. Not scary at all. But as you watch the later episodes the show actually gets pretty good. And by the 10th episode, you're hooked. The acting is good. I think the characters personalities are fully established by the 9th 10th episodes. Overall ,nice blend of scary and light hearted fun.

The cast is diverse, the settings are interesting and the visual effects are top notch. My favorite episode so far is the 10th episode. If you like goosebumps, are you afraid of the dark, then this is right up your alley. I hope Netflix gives us a season 2.

Great series with a huge dose of nostalgia.

I enjoyed the books from my childhood and now that this is on the Big Box Screen, have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. Incidentally, my family enjoyed it as we have both Singapore and Indonesian watching and it was fun learning and discovering myths from both countries.

The series is not perfect with some awkwardness in between dialogues at times, but it is realistic because that's how we sometimes switch between language in Singapore anyway.

The actors are likeable and you can see the effort put into the whole play out. It's also nice to see the diverse cast representing all the major races found in SEA. Would love the story to be further developed. Definitely need a Season 2!

SOOO SOO WORTH IT !! MY CHILDHOOD STORIES COME TO LIFE so cool !!

At first when I saw the maturity rating and it was under parental guidance I was like oh probably nothing much must be like some kids show. BOYYY WAS I IN FOR A TREAT. The show was such a great blend of both comedy and adventure a little thriller I would say !! The characters were all such a good team together and I think the chemistry of the cast was so great !! The show also touches on folklore horror tales and it was so interesting to see these characters that you would usually talk about when sharing scary stories with your friends or even read in book come to life in the show. There are even explanations weaved into the storylines about these folklore which I think was such a great way to learn more about them. Production value was soo highhh I didn't expect and the twists were sooo well written. REALLLY REALLYY HOPING FOR A SEASON 2 !!! But a must watch if you were an avid mr midnight fan when you were younger but even if you weren't I think the show is still a great way to start your journey into the world of mr midnight because who knows where it might take you heh heh heh.

Great alternative to Stranger Things!

I was at first hesitant to watch the show considering how much I loved Stranger Things and didn't want to be disappointed by a Netflix show simply copying the ideas. However, I was pleasantly surprised with how good the story line was and how entertaining the show was. The acting was also very good considering the ages of the actors which also engrossed me into the plot. There were also many parts that were suspenseful and left me on the edge of my seat waiting for what was to happen. There were some parts that were a bit childish but I would still recommend this for people of all ages (especially for people like me that liked Stranger Things).
