Image
France’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival, the leading global get-together for all things animation, has unveiled the lineup for this year’s Work in Progress section, among the most highly anticipated events of the world’s animation calendar. When a physical event is possible, lines begin to form early in the morning as fans of the high-profile projects hope to get into the limited seating available at the Salle Pierre Lamy.

A barometer for future standout awards and/or box office success, recent high-profile projects featured at Annecy’s Work in Progress include Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Oscar-winner “Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse” and Oscar nominees in Netflix’s “Klaus” and “Over the Moon,” Cartoon Saloon’s “Wolfwalkers,” Claude Barras’ “My Life as a Zucchini,” Stéphane Aubier and Vincent Patar’s “Ernest & Celestine,” Michael Dudok de Wit’s “The Red Turtle” and Dean DeBlois’ “How to Train Your Dragon 2.

Embracing Hollywood’s animation grandees, France’s Annecy Intl. In feature terms, Annecy will open with Michel Ocelot’s Wild Bunch-sold “Dilili in Paris,” with the celebrated French director, whose “Kirikou and the Sorceress” brought down the flag on Europe’s arthouse animation build, attending Annecy to present the feature.

Special sneak peek screenings for “Wreck It Ralph 2” and “Hotel Transylvania 3” join director Dean DeBlois’ work-in-progress footage presentation of “How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” from DreamWorks Animation, which will open and close Annecy with two titles from its shorts program: “Bird Karma” and “Bilby.

Animated Feature Contender: Rio 2096
Tim Brayton will be looking at several of the contenders for Oscar's Animated Feature race. He previously reviewedThe Wind Rises, Ernest & Celestine, Frozen, and Letter to Momo. This week: Rio 2096: A Story of Love and Fury.

At times, one is reminded to despair for the English language. We have before us a certain Rio 2096: A Story of Love and Fury, named in the original Portuguese Uma História de Amor e Fúria, a superior title on two levels. One is that the “Rio 2096” business is an inelegant distraction. The other and more important thing is that in almost every Romantic language, the words for “story” and “history” are the same, and plenty of writers have gotten mileage out of that fact through the years. At any rate, describing Rio 2096 as something that’s both story and history at the same time is merely accurate. Whereas...

Rio 2096: A Story of Love and Fury Movie Review
Uma História de Amor e Fúria (2013)
Title: Rio 2096: A Story of Love and Fury Director: Luiz Bolognesi If American animation has, in aggregate, been a bit underwhelming this year, a stirring reminder of the medium’s possibilities arrives in the striking “Rio 2096: A Story of Love and Fury,” a love story spanning six centuries. Directed by Luiz Bolognesi, the film – not unlike “Cloud Atlas” or “The Fountain,” to name but a couple recent high-profile films which touch upon themes of loss and reincarnation — marries a moody and evocative rumination on human frailty with animation possessing an uncommon lyricism and beauty. Winner of the Best Feature prize at the 2013 Annecy International Animated Film Festival, “Rio 2096″ [ Read More ]

Oscar animations: weakest ever?
It's traditionally one of the most competitive categories, but the longlist for 2014's animated film Oscar looks weak

• More Oscar predictions 2014

• Despicable Me 2 - Peter Bradshaw's review

Over the past decade, the winner of the best animated film Oscar has often been a better-reviewed movie than the best picture winner. Is The Hurt Locker, victor in 2010, really a superior movie to Up? Will future generations hold 2009's Slumdog Millionaire in greater regard than the beguiling Wall-e? There's often been a sense that the very existence of the animation category serves to restrict the genre come awards season, limiting its potential to challenge for other prizes.

Disney-owned Pixar, which made both Up and Wall-e, carried off the animation Academy award six times between 2003 and 2010. But the pioneering studio has suffered a slow descent into relative mediocrity since the halcyon years of Ratatouille and The Incredibles. Now it looks like...

The 2013 Animated Feature Oscar hopefuls
Tim here, officially taking over the Film Experience animation beat to share with everybody some news: the final list of 19 features submitted for consideration for the Best Animated Feature Film Academy Award has been announced. There's no guarantee that all 19 will end up qualifying - The Smurfs 2 is on the list, and there seems little reason to assume that it won't follow its predecessor in being disqualified - but as long as 16 make the final cut, we can look forward to 5 nominees in the category. Meaning that every animated feature released in the United States will have a 1 in 3.8 of receiving an Oscar nomination, which are not the most appropriate odds of receiving a prestigious, internationally prominent award.

We'll spend more time in the weeks to come going over all of these titles individually, but I thought it would be a good time to do some immediate sorting. Rather...
