Aliens in 4K: Has AI claimed yet another James Cameron release?
Image
You would think that as technology advances, visual art forms such as film – including home media – would see a definite improvement in quality. But here we are yet again, getting bummed out over how studios have taken cleaning up transfers too far, polishing iconic movies into a “pristine” oblivion. And yes, they may have once more botched another James Cameron 4K Blu-ray. Game over, man!

The latest example comes via the 4K release of James Cameron’s Aliens, which came out on March 12th. As HD Report noted via a side-by-side comparison, even the high-definition transfer released 14 years ago is more respectable than the 4K one out just last week: “When comparing the two, the old Blu-ray is a better representation of celluloid at a time when filmmakers are trying to make images look less digital.” Hell, you can even see how Newt feels about it in the second image!

‘The Abyss’ Is James Cameron’s New Hollywood Moment
Image
Of all the films in James Cameron's filmography, his 1989 movie, The Abyss, might be the most overlooked. It was just as ambitious as most of his other blockbuster projects, yet it only made a meager $90 million against its approximately $45 million budget, abysmal compared to his usual record-breaking standards. Over time, it has languished in a lack of home video distribution, making it even more buried.

Cocoon (1985)
Suits, Ted Lasso, and the Rise of Comfort TV: Is the Desire For Easy Viewing Creating a Barren Streaming Landscape?
Cocoon (1985)
Perhaps you've had this experience:

You hear about an interesting movie or show, or you remember an old favorite, and you reason that since it's a well-known title, it's several years old, and you subscribe to several streaming services, you should be able to watch it for free somewhere.

Then you conduct the research that's necessary to find anything in the vast streaming landscape, and you realize that you're gonna have to shell out to rent or buy this thing.

Or worse, that film or series simply is not available. Anywhere.

If you're lucky, you can go on Amazon and have the DVD delivered in a couple of days, but you haven't seen your DVD player since Obama was in office, and you need something to watch now.

From comedy classics like Cocoon to Oscar winners like Il Postino to beloved children's movies like The Brave Little Toaster to action...

How James Cameron Weaponized Titanic Against Fox While Filming Avatar
Image
Never bet against James Cameron. The man is responsible for some of the best and highest-grossing blockbusters of the last 40 years, and yet every time he makes a new (and admittedly risky) movie, everyone is skeptical about its chances of success. Granted, Cameron himself saying "Avatar: The Way of Water" had to become one of the highest-grossing movies of all time just to break even does sound ludicrous and nearly impossible, but still! Jimmy C delivers.

Of course, hindsight is 20/20, and it is easy to see now that the "Avatar" franchise just prints money, but before 2009 there were plenty of reasons to be doubtful of a brand-new sci-fi movie making that much money. This means that James Cameron faced naysayers, particularly studio execs who thought they knew how to deliver the highest-grossing movie of all time better than the guy who had done it already.

In an interview with The New York Times,...

Avatar 2 Perfectly Reversed Another James Cameron Movie Story (& Shows How His Career Has Changed)
Image
Avatar 2's Tulkun hunting story mirrors Aliens with humans hunting aliens in both, but with a more sympathetic view in the 2022 sequel. The Way of Water highlights a dark side of human characters, portraying corporations as more vicious than the alien species they exploit. Cameron's career shift shows a more sympathetic portrayal of alien species, aligning them with real-life endangered species like killer whales.

While Avatar: The Way of Water’s Tulkun hunting subplot might seem entirely original, the storyline secretly riffs on an earlier James Cameron movie’s plot. James Cameron has a handful of consistent obsessions that show up throughout his oeuvre. From Titanic to Avatar: The Way of Water, to The Abyss, to his disowned directorial debut Piranha: The Spawning, it is clear that the visionary director is fascinated by water and how the immensity of the oceans can be captured on-screen. Judging by the Avatar movies,...

Aliens | 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release lands back on the UK schedule
James Cameron
James Cameron’s Aliens will still be arriving on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK this April after all, just a few weeks later than originally planned.

Next week, over in the US, the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of James Cameron’s Aliens lands in store. It does so alongside releases of The Abyss and True Lies, and in the case of each of these, the UK has a slightly different story to tell.

The Abyss has been cancelled altogether, for falling foul of the BBFC. More on that here. True Lies has been put back to 1st April, but is still very much on the way, and you can find more on that here.

As for Aliens? Well, it mysteriously disappeared off the schedules altogether last week, instead sitting at a holding date of the end of the year. The film had been due on 4K disc...

As ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Debuts To Strong Audience On Netflix, Creative Team Looks Ahead To Expanding Live-Action Adaptation
Image
The results are in, and Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender seems to be a hit.

The live action adaptation topped the streamer’s weekly English-language TV list with 21.2M views in its opening weekend. According to Netflix, it reached the Top 10 in 92 countries. It was edged out as most-watched title of the week by the Swedish natural disaster film The Abyss.

That’s a strong showing for the eight-episode series, which was another big swing for Netflix as it continues to dip its toes into anime-inspired content. In fact, Avatar managed to surpass One Piece in its debut weekend.

As with One Piece, Netflix was firing on all cylinders to launch the series, partnering with Serena Williams and even taking over the Las Vegas Sphere. So far, the Avatar global social campaign has reached 1.53B impressions, which is on par with both One Piece as well as Netflix’s hit series Wednesday.

‘Anyone but You’ Thrives, ‘Mean Girls’ Less So on PVOD as Tyler Perry Is #1 Again at Netflix
Image
Through Sunday, “Mean Girls” was the highest-grossing domestic film two months into 2024.

Its total is $15 million less than, though still quite close to, the longer-running “Anyone but You” (Sony), similarly with significant female appeal. But the results for the first week with both available show that Will Gluck’s Australian-set rom-com is doing much better at home than the musical remake of the hit 2004 high school clique satire.

Meanwhile, little is more normal than a new original Tyler Perry film placing immediately at #1 on Netflix. “Mea Culpa,” starring Kelly Rowland as an attorney who takes on a tough murder defense to enhance her chances at partnership at her firm, is the hyphenate’s first film since 2022 and third consecutive production for the streamer.

“Anyone but You” has a slight edge over “Mean Girls” in its pricing. The former can be digitally purchased for $19.99, while that price yields a 48-hour rental...

James Cameron reveals how he narrowly escaped death

Los Angeles, Oct 2 (Ians) Filmmaker James Cameron almost lost his life on the set of “The Abyss”.

The 69-year-old director helmed the 1989 science fiction film about a deep sea research team trying to recover a lost Navy submarine but found himself in a life-or-death situation when he was shooting underwater and the oxygen tank was running out but he had no way of contacting the photographer above the surface.

“We had the ‘angels’, which were the safety divers that were right there, and each one was assigned to one or two of the actors and just kept them in sight the whole time. (But) they weren’t watching me,” he told Variety, reports aceshowbiz.com.

James Cameron Names Which of His Movies Started Hollywood's CGI Trend (And It's Not Avatar)
Image
James Cameron, the visionary filmmaker, made a rare appearance at the Beyond Fest in Los Angeles, where he engaged in a Q&a session following a screening of the extended version of his film The Abyss.

During the discussion, Cameron empathized with the underwater film's huge impact on his career, as well as the entire film industry. The director even claimed that the film started the revolution of extensively adapting computer-generated imagery in Hollywood. The Abyss was a pioneering project in Cameron's illustrious career, pushing the boundaries of cinematic possibility. Beyond merely submerging a power plant and engineering the means for actors to perform underwater, the film introduced groundbreaking CGI, particularly in the creation of a 'soft' water-based character that was to interact with the cast.

James Cameron Says He Had to Punch Someone to Survive While Filming The Abyss
Image
What seemed like routine filming of an underwater sequence for 1989's The Abyss briefly escalated into a behind-the-scenes mishap involving James Cameron's scuba gear.

Cameron casually mentioned he once had to punch someone in the face during production, and according to a Variety report he had justifiable cause for it. The filmmaker answered questions at a press junket following a three-hour special edition screening of The Abyss. The Avatar: The Way of Water director said the entire movie was filmed in an abandoned nuclear power plant, and all requisites were met to ensure the actors and crew were trained for safety on set. Cameron recounted he still relied on his diving experience and sheer wits to survive a dangerous incident.

James Cameron Says ‘The Abyss’ Wasn’t a ‘Slam Dunk’ Like His Previous Films: ‘The Studio Wasn’t Terribly Helpful’
Image
James Cameron wasn’t as confident staring into “The Abyss” in 1989.

The Oscar winner explained during a Beyond Fest panel moderated by IndieWire’s Jim Hemphill that the underwater sci-fi action film was the “first really big, kind of mega-budget movie” in his career. Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio starred as divorced petroleum engineers who are hired to assist a Navy Seal (Michael Biehn) in recovering a nuclear submarine. The 20th Century Fox film had a budget of $43 million and grossed $90 at the worldwide box office before winning the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

“Well, this was my first really big, kind of mega-budget movie,” Cameron said onstage. “It wasn’t kind of a slam dunk in the way ‘Aliens’ was. Like, we just knew ‘Aliens’ worked. This one, we didn’t know exactly how it was going to work.”

Cameron’s unease led to his first test...

James Cameron Reveals Near-Death Experience Filming His Most Underwater Movie
Image
James Cameron nearly died while filming The Abyss due to a lack of safety divers assigned to him, putting him in dangerous situations. Cameron had to rely on ineffective underwater communication systems to get help when he ran out of air, leading to a close call with drowning. Despite the risks, Cameron's dedication to pushing boundaries and capturing stunning visuals underwater in The Abyss set the tone for his career of taking on audacious projects.

James Cameron explains how he nearly died while filming The Abyss. Released in 1989, The Abyss is an adventure film chronicling the story of a civilian diving team that finds their search for a lost nuclear submarine disrupted by an aquatic alien species. Starring Ed Harris, The Abyss is now considered one of Cameron’s classic works, and one that laid the groundwork for the kind of lavish visual style of which the director is known for.

James Cameron appeared Wednesday at Los Angeles genre festival Beyond Fest for a q&a about “The Abyss” after a screening of the film’s seldom-seen two hour and 51 minute Special Edition. During his conversation with moderator Jim Hemphill, Cameron confirmed completion of the 4K restoration he announced last year, physical and streaming versions of which he said were “out of his hands” but all work has long been concluded. “All of the mastering is done and I think it drops pretty soon — a couple of months or something like that,” Cameron said in response to an audience question. “There’s a lot of added material that they’re sticking in there, and it will be available on streaming simultaneously.
