Pedro Pascal In Freaky Tales (Photo Credit – Prime Video)
Freaky Tales stumbled at the box office after its April 4 release, but the story did not end there. The film has recently climbed into the top 3 on streaming platforms like HBO Max in the US since premiering there on August 8, per Flixpatrol. In less than a week, it has captured a new audience, driven by its star-studded cast featuring Pedro Pascal, Dominique Thorne, Angus Cloud, Normani, Ji-young Yoo, Marshawn Lynch, Jack Champion, Keir Gilchrist, and a surprise appearance by Tom Hanks.
What is Freaky Tales About?
The anthology, crafted by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, brings together four distinct stories set in Oakland, California, in 1987. Pascal stars as Clint in “Born to Mack,” a criminal trying to leave his past behind. When he refuses a heist targeting basketball star Sleepy Floyd, events spiral into encounters with punks, female rappers, Neo-Nazis, and even supernatural powers.

With acclaimed actor Pedro Pascal headlining several major projects this year, including The Last of Us Season 2 and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, many have forgotten about his intriguing ode to the '80s rising on the streaming charts. Pascal's anthology action comedy film, Freaky Tales, enjoys a redemption story on HBO Max after largely being buried in theaters.
Per FlixPatrol, Freaky Tales is one of the most popular HBO Max titles in the United States. The film ranks second on the streaming service's top 10 movie chart, only topped by Final Destination Bloodlines.
Directed and written by Captain Marvel helmers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Freaky Tales originally debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January of last year, where it received positive reviews. The movie received a limited theatrical release in April, grossing very little at the box office, and debuted on HBO Max on Aug. 8.

The Fantastic Four star, Pedro Pascal, took to Instagram stories to share a photo of the Weapons poster at a theater with a blunt caption: “Go to the fu**ing movies (if you can)”, tagging Zach Cregger and Julia Garner (via Discussing Film on X)
It’s a surprising public nod by Pascal to the horror movie, which he had to leave due to scheduling conflicts, and the 2023 Hollywood Strikes. So, Cregger was forced to recast the entire project, as stated in his Entertainment Weekly interview.
I had a whole different cast for this movie. And then we had the strike, and then Pedro Pascal’s schedule threw us into turmoil. I had to recast the entire movie.
The role eventually went to Josh Brolin, so let’s look at why he portrayed it better than Pascal could have, and if The Last of Us actor needed Weapons in his 2025 line-up or not.

The internet might joke that every single new release features Pedro Pascal, but the actor has been proving his acting skills in multiple projects this year throughout different genres. One of them is the highly underrated action comedy Freaky Tales.
Following a limited theatrical release earlier this year, Freaky Tales is finally getting the attention it deserves on streaming. FlixPatrol just revealed Freaky Tales debuted in second place on the charts on HBO Max immediately after its release. Although the film attracted enough attention, it wasn't enough to defeat Final Destination Bloodlines.

Who doesn't love Pedro Pascal? The four-time Emmy-nominated actor has recently made headlines for his starring role as Reed Richards, also known as Mister Fantastic, in the Marvel superhero film The Fantastic Four: First Steps. If you’re anything like us, you probably can’t get enough of watching him light up the screen.
The good news? Now, thanks to HBO Max, you don’t have to wait to see more of him. One of his most recent movies has just been added to the streaming platform, and chances are it completely flew under your radar.
Pascal is a very busy man. This year alone, he has been in five movies. You might have also watched him in the second season of the popular HBO post-apocalyptic drama The Last of Us. But out of the five films he's been in, one of them just didn't seem to make as much noise,...

Pedro Pascal is 2025's most popular actor. He's had multiple projects this year alone, which culminated with his debut in the MCU as Reed Richards in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
As it has happened with multiple artists before, overexposure leads to criticism. Anne Hathaway went through this, as well as Jennifer Lawrence, Sydney Sweeney, and more. This summer, he's starred in two A24 movies – Celine Song's romantic comedy Materialists and Ari Aster's neo-Western Eddington, and will also make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as Reed Richards in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, releasing in theaters on July 25. However, Pascal has another movie that was released in theaters this year, but flew under the radar, and is now making its way onto streaming.

While Julia Garner may be heralding his end when The Fantastic Four: First Steps arrives in cinemas later this week, HBO Max is heralding the streaming arrival of one of Pedro Pascal’s most slept-on films — Freaky Tales. The anthology project by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck landed in cinemas earlier this year, but, despite largely positive reviews from critics, failed to make a wave with audiences, most likely due to a limited theatrical release. Now, it’s gunning for a second shot in the spotlight, as the Lionsgate flick sets an arrival date of August 8.
If you love a movie that introduces a multitude of characters whose paths cross in bonkers ways and has a soundtrack that sounds like it’s straight out of Stranger Things, Freaky Tales is the film you didn’t know you needed. Set in 1987, audiences will follow along with Pascal’s Clint as he...

Fans had some trepidation about The Fantastic Four: First Steps following reports from early test-screenings, but if the social media reactions are anything to go by, they needn't have worried.
We've learned not to put too much stock in these initial reactions, but the X posts from those who have seen the MCU reboot are significantly more glowing than they were for Captain America: Brave New World, for example.
Marvel Studios has now released a "Dreamer" teaser, which spotlights some new footage along with the high praise that's been heaped upon the movie over the weekend.
Whether First Steps really is destined to be considered a "masterpiece" (that word is tossed around way too liberally) remains to be seen, but these reactions do give us reason to be excited.
Check out the new teaser along with a behind-the-scenes featurette focusing on the movie's VFX below.

Details of The Fantastic Four: First Steps' post-credits scene have been doing the rounds for a while, but it seems the stinger was originally going to set up the events of Avengers: Doomsday in a very different way.
According to scooper Mttsh, Marvel was considering reintroducing Chris Evans as Steve Rogers in his Nomad persona before plans changed.
Spoilers for the actual post-credits scene follow.
"For Fantastic Four: First Steps, they originally planned a post-credits scene with Chris Evans as Nomad coming to warn them. Then they replaced it with one featuring Doom. Now, in the final version, there are two post-credits scenes."
Evans recently claimed that he was "happily retired," and has no intention of reprising his most famous role. During a reent interview with Screen Rant, the Materialists star remained adamant that he won't be back, while admitting that he's sad to be missing "the party."

After hitting physical media earlier this month, Until Dawn will stream on Netflix this Thursday, July 24.
Based on Supermassive Games’ survival horror video game, David F. Sandberg directs from a script by Blair Butler and Gary Dauberman.
One year after her sister mysteriously disappeared, Clover and her friends head into the remote valley where she vanished in search of answers. Exploring an abandoned visitor center, they find themselves stalked by a masked killer and horrifically murdered one by one…only to wake up and find themselves back at the beginning of the same evening.
Trapped in the valley, they’re forced to relive the nightmare again and again — only each time the killer threat is different, each more terrifying than the last. Hope dwindling, the group soon realizes they have a limited number of deaths left, and the only way to escape is to survive until dawn.

An international teaser for Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps has found its way online, giving us a look at quite a bit of new footage from the MCU reboot.
The tone is a little more sombre than previous trailers, as Marvel's First Family begin to comprehend the magnitude of the threat Galactus and the Silver Surfer pose to their world.
Speaking of the Devourer of Worlds, we do get a new look at the all-powerful villain, but the shot cuts away just before his full face is unveiled. We have seen plenty of promo art and merchandise at this stage, but it seems Marvel does intend to save the full reveal for the movie.
“It’s a big moment when the Fantastic Four get to see him for the first time,” director Matt Shakman tells USA Today. “And I'd love for that to be the same for the audience.

When it was announced that Paul Walter Hauser had joined the cast of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, fans immediately began to speculate that he might be playing the first foe the team ever faced on the page, Mole Man.
Now, USA Today has made it official with a first look at the Black Bird actor as the subterranean villain - although it sounds like he won't actually be a full-blown bad guy in this movie.
“He is living sort of in the shadows like a villain would, but he's also taking care of an entire race of people and trying to live his life without being bothered,” Hauser says of his character.
It seems Harvey Elder's beef with Marvel First Family will be political in nature.
“It's a power struggle, but within that, there are compromises and alliances made.” adds director Matt Shakman: “He's all about community, and...

Despite showing up in the first teaser for the movie, speculation mounted that the legendary John Malkovich may have been cut from The Fantastic Four: First Steps after the actor's name was absent from a recent synopsis.
Now, we have confirmation that Malkovich's character - the villainous Red Ghost - will not appear in the MCU reboot.
“There were a lot of things that ultimately ended up hitting the cutting room floor,” director Matt Shakman tells Variety. “When we were building a ’60s retro-future world, introducing all of these villains, introducing these four main characters as a group, as well as individually, introducing the idea of a child — there was a lot of stuff to balance in this movie and some things had to go ultimately in terms of shaping the film for its final version.”

There have been quite a few rumors relating to the main plot of The Fantastic Four: First Steps as it pertains to Galactus and his reasons for targeting the team's world, but just in case you haven't been keeping up with the marketing, spoilers will follow.
While speaking to Games Radar, director Matt Shakman confirmed that the story will revolve around the Devourer of Worlds being "put on a collision course" with Reed Richards and Sue Storm's infant son, Franklin.
"What was so charming about this movie is it's about the tiniest, youngest thing in the world and the oldest, biggest thing in the universe," he explains. "Galactus's scale is a big part of him and Ralph Ineson is an amazing actor; that voice, that presence. He felt 1000ft tall."
What exactly would a near-omnipotent planet-eating being want with a baby? That much has not been disclosed, but it...

Marvel Studios' has launched one of its most impressive marketing campaigns yet for The Fantastic Four: First Steps, with a number of publications such as Time, Men's Health and People featuring members of Marvel's First Family in a series of in-universe cover stories.
Most of the adverts contain obvious character nods, but People Magazine's recent H.E.R.B.I.E. spread did feature an easy-to-miss nod to the villainous Doctor Doom, who will be played by Robert Downey Jr. in Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars.
Is this an indication that Victor Von Doom will make his debut in Ff?
Possible spoilers follow.
According to recent First Steps plot leaks, Doom doesn't actually appear in the movie (the closest we get is a reference to Latveria), but does show up in the post-credits scene.

Marvel Studios has released a new teaser for The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and it focuses on Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn) turning on the charm in an attempt to gain the affections of the Silver Surfer (Julia Garner) and sway her from her mission.
We learned that Johnny had a thing for Shalla-Bal in a previous trailer when he told his teammates that he didn't need any help to "kill sexy aliens," and here we see him approach Galactus' herald in Human Torch form and ask if her surfboard is attached to her body.
Might want to work on the chat-up game there, Storm!
While speaking to BBC at the film’s London premiere over the weekend, Garner was asked about the initial response from some fans who wanted a man to be cast as the Silver Surfer.
“I said, ‘I’m just going to still do my job,'...

The grossest, goriest, and most gratuitous of the year are set to be feted at the 2025 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards.
The horror magazine has unveiled the nominees for its signature awards, which includes the big categories you'd expect — like Best Wide Release and Best Lead Performance — and some you mind not—like Best Video Game and Best Public Domain Resurrection.
The Chainsaw Awards are also among the first opportunities for this year's potential awards frontrunner, Sinners, to flex its muscles. (Metaphorical muscles. Michael B. Jordan's are currently streaming on HBO Max.) Ryan Coogler's period vampire thriller is in contention for Best Wide Release — where it will compete with 28 Years Later — and boasts a total of ten nominations in all.
With an eligibility window that ran from July 2024 to June 2025, the Chainsaw Awards also include some of last year's awards contenders, including The Substance, which tied Sinners for nominations.

“Sinners” and “The Substance” lead the nominations for Fangoria’s 2025 Chainsaw Awards, which recognizes standout achievements in horror across film, television and gaming.
“This year we continue the new tradition of pitting the second half of last year with the first half of this year in a cage match of cinematic carnage,” Phil Nobile Jr., Fangoria Eic, said in a statement. “Like the Grammys, but gorier. It’s made for a rather chaotic list of nominees, and we expect the voting to be vicious and voluminous.”
“Sinners” and “The Substance” each earned 10 nominations, competing in the same categories for best wide release, best cinematography, best score, best director, best screenplay, best costume design, and best lead and supporting performances. Nominations also include “Strange Darling,” Cuckoo,” “The Ugly Stepsister,” 28 Years Later” and “Longlegs.” Other categories include best streaming premiere, best kill and best creature FX.

The Marvel Studios TikTok page has shared a new teaser for The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and while it's only around 15 seconds long, it does feature a few news shots from the movie.
In addition to Johnny Storm telling his teammates that it's "time to save the planet" (surely another it's clobberin' time gag?), we see Reed Richards asking the others to trust him... a plan which Johnny and Ben Grimm aren't fully on board with (the way this is edited suggests that it might be footage/dialogue from two different scenes).
We also get another quick glimpse of The Thing rocking a beard, which is a look from the comics fans were not expecting to see in this film. There's speculation that this could signify a time-jump, but we don't know for certain.
In not-at-all surprising news, First Steps has been given an official MPA rating of PG-13 for “action/violence and some language.

The entire plot of Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps, along with every major story development, surprise character appearance, and post-credit scene detail, has seemingly leaked online.
The breakdown was shared on Reddit, and while we're all fully aware that the site does get its share of fake "leaks," we've reached out to a source who is confident that everything is on the level. Plus, based on what we already know about the movie, there's nothing here that stands out as being overly far-fetched or hard to believe.
With this in mind, beware of potentially major spoilers from this point on.
The breakdown reveals that the movie opens with a montage showing the team's past battles against Mole Man and "Red Ghost and his chimps." In present day, Sue Storm learns that she's pregnant shortly before the Silver Surfer arrives to inform them that Galactus is on his way to devour their planet.

Marvel Studios has announced that the final trailer for The Fantastic Four: First Steps will be released online this Wednesday, and we have a (very) brief new clip featuring Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn) and The Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach).
In what we assume to be a few seconds of footage from the upcoming trailer, we see Johnny ask his grouchy teammate what time it is. Ben responds with a curt, "it's dinner time."
So far, we haven't really seen that much interaction between these two, but this is a good sign that the often contentious big brother/little brother dynamic will carry over from the comics.
Have a look at the clip at the link below, along with another RealD 3D teaser that's currently screening in theaters.

The first look at a new tie-in popcorn holder for Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps has been shared online, and it features Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal) using his stretchy abilities - something we've only seen very briefly in the trailers and TV spots.
Mr. Fantastic is (obviously) using his arm to grasp the bucket here, but the internet being the internet, some fans have latched on to the fact that, from a certain angle, it does kind of look like it could be... another body part.
This is just the latest in a large range of First Steps popcorn buckets that will soon be available. This one won't be quite as pricey as that massive Galactus collectible, however, and will set you back $39.99.

Happy Father's Day! Marvel Studios has marked the occasion with a new teaser for The Fantastic Four: First Steps, focusing on "Marvel's First Father," Reed Richards.
The brief clip doesn't give us a look at Mr. Fantastic in action, unfortunately, but Pedro Pascal fans should appreciate the retro-style footage.
"I see a limitless amount of layers to this character," Pascal said of his take on Richards during a recent interview with Empire. "He does the ultimate version of catastrophising. A brain that has an overview of threats on a mathematical level, but also being emotionally available. It was a fascinating contradiction."
Though accurate box office estimates won't arrive for another couple of weeks, a recent forecast predicted a $125 million - to $155 million debut for the MCU reboot. Whether First Steps will prove to be the massive hit Marvel Studios really needs it to be obviously remains to be seen.

We're over six weeks away from the release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, so while box office tracking is still a ways off, BoxOfficeTheory.com has shared their early forecast for the MCU reboot's opening weekend.
Based on factors such as ticket pre-sales, trailer views/reactions, Marvel's previous late summer openers and the competition the movie will face when it hits theaters, the site is predicting a domestic debut of between $125 million and $136 million.
"At the risk of understating, a release two weeks after Superman (July 11) will be incredibly interesting to follow," they write. "In an era when many audiences have become more selective about which comic book films get them into cinemas, the year’s two biggest properties from that realm will aim to coexist in the lucrative late summer corridor. Either way, die hard fans will show up for both."
This would be a great start for the movie,...

Tickets for Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps went on sale yesterday, and have been selling very well so far, with reports of purchase links crashing due to high demand.
Regardless, the majority of fans seem to be looking forward to the MCU reboot, and yesterday's new teaser arguably went over better than the recent full trailer, as we got to see a bit more of Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm's personalities, as well as a little "it's clobberin' time" tease.
Now, we have some new promo stills from the latest issue of Empire Magazine (via @CosmicMarvel), giving us another look at Reed and Sue (with baby Franklin in his carriage), the Silver Surfer, the Human Torch taking flight, and more.

In theaters on July 25.

We figured tickets for The Fantastic Four: First Steps might go on sale at some point this week, and Marvel Studios has now officially announced that you'll be able to book your seat for the long-awaited MCU reboot tomorrow.
We may get a new trailer once purchase links go live (we'd say a featurette and some new posters are more likely), but for now, we have a retro one-sheet featuring Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, the Human Torch, the Thing, H.E.R.B.I.E. the robot, and the Fantasticar.
Kevin Feige spoke on the importance of introducing these characters to the MCU during a recent interview with Empire.
“I think that there are no four characters that are more important for the history of Marvel. When Disney bought Fox, it was really an unexpected dream come true. It came at the perfect time, to help us launch into a new era.

Given the fact that Robert Downey Jr. will soon step into the role of Doctor Doom in the MCU, and that the character is most closely associated with Marvel's First Family, fans have understandably been speculating that the villain could make his debut in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
Now, director Matt Shakman has provided us with a pretty definitive answer.
Spoilers follow.
While speaking to Empire for the movie mag's latest issue, Shakman stated: "Doom is not a part of my film, and therefore not a part of my purview."
According to a few different sources, the post-credits scene that was attached to a recent test-screening did feature the villain, with Sue Storm returning to Franklin's crib to find Doom sitting beside the boy while holding his mask in his hands.
Do Shakman's comments suggest that this leak is inaccurate? Not necessarily.
A post-credits stinger is not technically...

Since there had been no mention of Marvel's First Family in the almost two-decade history of the MCU, fans had assumed that Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four reboot, now titled The Fantastic Four: First Steps, would most likely be set in an alternate universe when it was first announced.
Kevin Feige would later confirm that Reed, Sue, Johnny and Ben would indeed be introduced in a different part of the Multiverse, and we may now know exactly which Earth they will hail from.
Spoilers follow.
According to scooper Mttsh, First Steps "will be set in Universe 828."
This designation has yet to be established in the MCU or in the comic books, but if it sounds familiar, it's probably because Stephen Strange and America Chavez paid a visit to Earth 838 in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. There's been some confusion about this online, but it wouldn't make much sense for...

As expected, Marvel Studios debuted another teaser for The Fantastic Four: First Steps during game 4 of the NBA Western Conference Finals last night, even though it wasn't exactly the new look at the MCU reboot fans were hoping for.
The spot reuses and mixes around a lot of footage from the recent full trailer, but there are a couple of new shots in there.
In addition to a quick glimpse of Galactus' immense shadow looming over the city, we see Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby) watching H.E.R.B.I.E. the robot flying towards what appears to be the Fantasticar launch pad we saw in that first batch of set photos.
Prior to First Steps entering production, we heard that the Invisible Woman was going to be the main focus of the movie. We're sure the other members of the team won't be given short shrift, but the story...

Though we still don't have confirmation, a new look at Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps is expected to air during game 4 of the NBA Western Conference Finals later tonight.
Whether it'll take the form of a full teaser, new clip or just another one of the tie-in adverts we've been seeing remains to be seen. For now, we have another promo featuring Marvel's First Family settling down to watch the game.
It looks like this is a mixture of actual footage from the movie and scenes filmed specifically for these NBA teasers, but the editing is pretty seamless to be fair.
We also have some new quotes from Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm) from an interview with Esquire. The Stranger Things alum is looking forward to meeting back up with his First Steps cast-mates - and working with Robert Downey Jr. - when they return for Avengers: Doomsday.
