No way on God's green earth would wholesome, white, and white bread David A.R. White ever be given an assignment as pastor in a black church. No way either would a black church be associated with the ministry of one of those tele-evangelist types like Ray Wise. But that's what the film Brother White would have you believe. Not in this world.
White plays an assistant pastor, one of many in Wise's organization and he's earnest but not terribly effective. He gets an assignment to move from California to Atlanta and pastor a black church in a poor neighborhood in Atlanta that's in Chapter 11 with a lot of rich and powerful folks looking to close it. I don't think I have to go much further.
Such television veterans as Reginald Vel Johnson and Jackee are in the cast here and there's some good gospel singing for those who like such music.
How does White do it? Think of those old Mickey Rooney/Judy Garland movies and you'll have the answer.
Well it worked for Mickey and Judy.
