Hit me like a wave

Imperfectly perfect series. Life is messy, life is hard, life is made of choices. Life is pain, life is love.

It was so, so, so beautifully acted. Kathryn Hahn and Sarah Pidgeon blew my breath away, they deliver flawless and unforgetablle performances.

Also, they really nailed with it with the sountrack.

What a ride. A whole lot of feels after finishing this series in a binge row. It will stay in my mind for a long time.

I still am left with a bunch of questions but I almost don't care. Some moments were flat, but I almost don't care. I almost want a second season and I almost don't want it.

Excellent series

Cannot say enough about Kathryn Hahn. She is one of my favorite actresses from back when I first saw her on How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days. Amazing actress.

If you've lost your mom, this series might be tough emotionally. It was for me.

Merritt Wever's character made me want to be a better mother. She needs to be in more films! She was great in Nurse Jackie and fabulous in this.

Thoroughly enjoyed this series. It was thought provoking, heart wrenching, so many different emotions. It left me rethinking my own life and realizing I am not living my best life. Its difficult but if you want more only you can make it happen..

This is a must watch!

Dear Sugar, I'll take the book.

This show is based on the book by the same name, a collection of Dear Sugar letters answered (originally anonymously) by Cheryl Strayed. Anyone familiar with Cheryl's work knows her life story and will recognize the real parts of her story in this show. About half the show is a Strayed biography and half is fiction. The overdubbed real letters are original and beautiful. Cheryl is an extremely gifted writer and advice giver, and she based her Dear Sugar advice on her own life experiences. The show creates a fictional narrative of a woman's messy life partially based on a real woman's messy life, incorporating the letters into the narrative. Although clever and well executed, the parts of the show don't completely add up. But the book is amazing, and given the choice between the book or the show I would definitely choose the book.

Mediocre with Some Good

This series mirrors Cheryl Strayed's real life with a few variations. It has a lot of similarities to one of my all time favorite movies/books, "Wild", by Cheryl Strayed. However, the direction is subpar and the screen writers constant switching from past to present is mind numbing at times. In my mind, Reese Witherspoon perfectly personified Cheryl, so it's hard for me to wrap my head around anyone else playing her. Don't get me wrong, I love Hahn, but I feel her true character gets lost in the shoddy direction and bad screen writing. Also, Laura Dern will always be Cheryl's beautiful, kind, thoughtful mom; The flashback mom in Tiny Beautiful Things tries hard to relay that same beauty, but falls short unfortunately. The series is entertaining and maybe if I haven't seen Wild 10 times and read the book twice, I would find it better (or maybe worse??) but in my mind nothing compares to the portrayal of Cheryl's life like Wild.

Beautiful show

I loved this show. I couldn't stop watching, watched all 8 episodes in one night. Beautiful show, emotional, relatable, well done. Don't listen to these negative reviews. A lot left unsaid but I hope they create a second season. A lot of depth to each character and the backstory of the lead makes you truly understand her trauma and the choices she's made. Her growth at the end!!! And her husband taking online advice and not knowing who it truly is!! Seriously such a great show. I love Katherine Hahn. And the actress that plays her young adult version was great too. Overall must watch. Others are haters 😅

Overrated

This is one of those shows that make me think there are many fake reviews on here. This show is definitely not 10, or even a 9, or 8. I watched it because of Reese Witherspoon, Cheryl Strayed, and I like the lead actress. However, the main character is just such an unlikeable head case. She is miserable, has a chip on her shoulder, and blames everyone but herself for her problems. I felt sorry for her daughter having such an embarrassing train wreck of a mother. She was a jerk to her best friend and cheated on her husband. It just wasn't believable that her hot husband wouldn't have divorced her much, much sooner.

Worst First 20 min of any TV series but..

The start of this TV series is incredibly confusing, making it difficult to follow. The writing is poorly executed, and only those with an optimistic outlook might be able to endure it. However, there is a glimmer of hope that emerges later on as the writing improves slightly. Many discussions about the fragmented script are warranted, as there is a lack of likable characters in the show. It's challenging to form a connection with them, and when you do start to feel sorry for them, they disappoint you with their nonsensical actions that make you think they deserve their own consequences.

While the occasional use of an out-of-order narrative can be effective, in this case, it creates an unrealistic portrayal of the main character's mother. She is depicted as perfect, which could be interpreted as the protagonist's idealized memory rather than reality. Nevertheless, the entire story feels disjointed, with disconnected elements such as the brother, mother, father, and rebellious daughter. It simply fails to come together in a cohesive manner, leaving the audience feeling unfulfilled. It's a chaotic mess that relies too heavily on excessive swearing, sex, and unmet expectations.

The writing! The poetry! The music!

The writing! The poetry! The music! The art of the acting and mixing of it all together to a perfect musical pitch that carries you away with it and then, with that perfect pitch, rips your heart and make you weep.

This series hits all my buttons: losing my younger beloved, brilliant, kind brother to lung cancer as I view this; lost a mother too soon.

The major problems for me - and costing a star - was the age discrepancies. The Hahn character is supposed to be super young when she has Francis Rae, but the age makes the Hahn character 33 when she had her daughter. Also, to me, the mother seemed to die when she was terribly young. However, Frankie, the mother, was played brilliantly.

What I liked about this series was that while it a deep and dark, there's good comedy interwoven to keep us from getting to far in the pits. Well worth the watch!!

It's hard to watch

So many F bombs, needless sex scenes, and excuses galore! I have not found this to be a comedy. Has Holllywood changed the definition of comedy and I missed the headline? I found myself yelling at the character "Loser" (at all phases of her life). Starting with the story she couldn't pull off one 5 page paper to graduate college? And then she will add it to the 1000 complaints about how bad life can be? Seems to me her mom knew her. Wanna bet a mom like that would have made her promise to finish her studies or engage someone at the school (she also attended) to help her?

It's hard to care about the characters with all the screaming and whining. The term 'arrested development comes to mind. Does anyone still think their dead loved one is still in a particular spot? Even after 30 years, and you moved on? News Flash: There is no need to dig mom 's ashes and take her with you. We carry them in our heart! AND then we see they were not even buried in a box. She literally poured the ashes on the ground. How much dirt was she willing to take to accomplish this insane gesture? (Answer: 5 gallons.)

The one scene where they get the daughter to go into school... would have been a huge celebration. They said nothing and the mom barely smiled. These people are sad-sacks.

I have not watched the full season. I am hoping once we are passed the shock value of her poor decision making...that the conversations will improve the character interactions. If it gets better or I even laugh once, I'll consider revising this review.

This is not the first movie with Reese Witherspoon's involvement where the women come off insane or unable to cope. She's made several in fact. I hope one day, she meets a creative role model to inspire her to develop a show about a woman of substance.

Surprising find and yet so needed

I saw the trailers a couple times and thought I'd try it. Wow! An emotional tale about love, loss and being human. Yes I cried at each episode as I lost my mom a couple of years ago, albeit not as a young woman but could absolutely relate to the enormity of the loss.

As a parent as a wife there are clearly struggles in staying afloat. This story focused in my opinion on keeping your sanity while attempting to honor your boundaries. I.e. Lucas. The daddy issues I just can't too surreal. Loved this mini series. I'm interested in the marriage outcome, and I hope they bring it back for another 8 episodes, but maybe this was enough.

Perfect combination of depth, heavy subjects and comedy

I have not read the book, I was attracted to it because of Cheryl Strayed and listened to her podcast named 'Sugar' so I was familiar with the idea. Katrhyn Hahn portrays her role splenidly. Loved her performance, kuddos to her for portraying all the emotions without it being over the top and just very believable. I was very moved by the story, even though I have not yet lost someone that close to me like a parent, the thought of it is always present every once in a while because you know that some day that day will come. And even though it is a heavy subject, the series combines it with comedy and lightness. And the narrative by Katrhyn Hahn character is beautiful, almost poetry-like words. The flashbacks were well done, and shows the puzzle pieces as why her live has become the way it has and her struggles in her current live. Nice rounded up story in 8 30 min episodes.

I *wanted* to like it

I really wanted to like this show, but it left me totally cold. First, while the characters go through major life events and *talk* like they're deep, they're actually all thinly written ciphers--after watching all 8 episodes I honestly wouldn't describe any of the characters as having a distinct personality. The main character spends half the series mourning her mother, but their relationship is so underwritten that it's hard to really feel the impact of her death other than that we're told it was devastating. The out of order nature of the flashbacks also makes the story hard to follow and left me ambivalent about what was happening. (How can you care about characters who suddenly appear out of nowhere? Or about a character's mistakes when the show skips right past the consequences? For example, why bother telling us about someone's heroin problem if we don't learn anything more about it?) Hahn is fine here, but I don't think she's doing anything particularly new and she's really not even doing that much--Sarah Pidgeon as the younger version of Hahn's character does most of the heavy lifting and while she's very good, good performances aren't enough to elevate what's actually pretty thinly written material. The last episode also hints at a major backstory that barely gets explained (and a result leaves Hahn's character looking crazy), the brother and sister have a weird incest-y vibe, and, though I adore Merrit Wever, she feels miscast and way too young to be playing the mother.

Life-affirming slow burn dramedy

I would recommend this series to everyone who loves shows like Better things, togetherness, transparent, casual which is quite rarely released these days.

I do miss shows like that which are indie in a way and as result quite niched for very particular viewers.

In 2023 when times are quite harsh for so many people around the world, shows like that can be considered as some sort of treatment because it tells you a someone else story of personal crises but everyone can find so many things in common to overlook these situations from outside and make it's own conclusions.

And yes, most of us are really broken.

Well shot, well acted, sad and promising.

Heartfelt & Funny

I've read Cheryl Strayed's books and connected with the authenticity and whole-heartedness in her writing, and I wasn't surprised that similar themes came up in this TV miniseries. Real, raw and hits you in the heart and gut. I think if you're middle-aged and looking back on your life, your regrets, your relationships and connections this show will resonate with you in some way. It reflects the complexities of life and the multidemontial nature of our life choices.

I binged - watched this show in less than a week and I am hoping for another season. There are so many shows out there that are superficial, violent or just plain bad and this is none of those things.

Wonderful, wonderful

Wow, I love Kathryn Hahn so I thought I would try an episode. This is written so beautifully. Having big losses myself (son, husband, parent with Alzheimer) plus raising children, there are so many relatable experiences. I love her take and hand wrote her response to the mother whose child had a brain tumor in episode 4. Such a cool take on God and life. I appreciate the relationship portrayals between her birth family , her husband's family and their family together. The challenge of raising a teenager and the consequences of being protective are well portrayed. There is a lot of reality in this storyline.
