The 52nd Telluride Film Festival is now in the books. Margot Robbie, Ryan Coogler, Oprah Winfrey, David Oyelowo, Rian Johnson, Janet Yang, Kathy Kennedy and Frank Marshall were among those who came just to watch movies. Screenings were introduced with a group meditation (Chloé Zhao), a song (Jesse Plemons) and a wave (man of few words Bruce Springsteen). Adam Sandler and Emma Stone posed for photos in the streets with ecstatic local schoolkids. And the Oscar race came into clearer focus.
Below, you can read my biggest awards-related takeaways from the fest.
Four high-profile films that already have U.S. distribution had their world premieres in Telluride: Ballad of a Small Player (Netflix), Bugonia (Focus), Hamnet (Focus) and Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere (20th Century). How did they go over?

Dexter Fletcher, perhaps best known for helming Elton John biopic Rocketman, is attached to direct The League of Gentlemen, Paramount Pictures’ reimagining of a 1960 British heist movie.
Bek Smith, who earned a story credit on the billion-dollar-grossing Moana 2, wrote the script.
The feature project is described as a modern-day remake of the 1960 movie of the same name. That film, which adapted a 1958 novel by John Boland, told of former British Army officers who rob a bank in London. Jack Hawkins and Richard Attenborough were among the stars.
Opera and theater producer Dalia Ibelhauptaitė, who is married to Fletcher, is attached to exec produce. Michael Attenborough, Richard Attenborough’s son, and Emma Forbes, daughter of the original movie’s screenwriter, Bryan Forbes, are also exec producing.
Fletcher has been involved in the project since early 2024, but his role has only come to light now. The project was in development at...

Scott Cooper’s Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere has been born to make an Oscar run.
The Boss biopic, starring Jeremy Allen White as the iconic rocker, is earning largely positive reviews following its Friday debut at the Telluride Film Festival. Adapted from Warren Zanes’s biography Deliver Me From Nowhere, the film explores a pivotal two-year stretch in Bruce Springsteen’s life, centering on the introspective period that led to the creation of his 1982 solo acoustic album Nebraska. Odessa Young plays Springsteen’s love interest, while Jeremy Strong takes on the role of Jon Landau, his loyal manager.
Following its debut, the film boasted a rare 100 percent Rotten Tomatoes score.

Over the past decade, there has been a deluge of big Hollywood movies about rock stars, among them 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody, 2019’s Rocketman and 2022’s Elvis, each of which made a fortune at the box office and was Oscar-nominated, with Bohemian Rhapsody winning four little gold men, including best actor, and Rocketman taking home one. Those films certainly addressed dark aspects of their subjects’ personal lives, but they were essentially jukebox musicals, excuses to showcase the greatest hits from across their subjects’ careers. That, for better or worse, depending on what you’re looking for, is not what you should expect from Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere. And it will be interesting to see how that goes over with the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

In an industry where even “Weird Al” Yankovic has a movie about his life story, it’s about time the Boss got his due. But “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere” isn’t just another assembly-line biopic — and that’s a blessing — in that it focuses not on the blue-collar troubadour’s glory days, but on the darkest chapter of his career: the narrow, near-suicidal period in which he stepped back from the success of his tour for “The River,” returned to his working-class roots and wrote what many consider to be his greatest album, “Nebraska.”
Too many music-centric movies subscribe to the same formula, dramatizing the arc whereby talented nobodies get discovered, shoot to stardom and then stumble with drugs and infidelity when fame becomes too much, only to be redeemed (“Rocketman”) or buried (“Fade to Black”) in the end. After taking Netflix by storm last year with his smash-hit limited series Baby Reindeer, Emmy-winning creator Richard Gadd is gearing up for his big follow-up with Half Man. Announced last year as a joint project between HBO and BBC, the series is set to premiere in 2026 on HBO Max in the U.S., Latin America, and Europe, and BBC iPlayer, BBC One, and BBC Scotland in the UK and Ireland, and will center on a very different, but still deliciously dark story between two estranged "brothers." The first images were just released today, which give a peek at the pair, played by Gadd and Rocketman alum Jamie Bell, including one...

When DC Studios revealed the movies and TV shows that will be part of "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters" slate at the start of 2023, The Brave and the Bold was among the biggest surprises. We expected Batman to be included in that, but jumping straight into a story about the hero training his son, Damian, as Robin is undeniably intriguing.
Matt Reeves' The Batman Part II will be released in theaters in 2027, and DC Studios co-ceo and Superman director James Gunn has said repeatedly that Robert Pattinson will not don the cape and cowl in the Dcu.
So, who should play this iconic character? We're expecting Batman to be a little older than David Corenswet's Man of Steel, so that automatically eliminates a lot of otherwise exciting possibilities. This role isn't an easy one for any actor to make their own, given the baggage it brings with it, but...

After 15 years of bringing James Bond to life over the course of five films, Daniel Craig officially retired from the role of 007 in 2021's "No Time To Die." The film served as a definitive send-off to Craig's iteration of the character, who was subject to varied quality with his films. The odd-numbered entries were great, while the even-numbered entries left much to be desired ("Quantum of Solace" and "Spectre").
Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Denis Villeneuve is set to direct "James Bond 26," which he will tackle right after he completes work on his much-anticipated trilogy capper, "Dune: Part Three." Naturally, most of the speculation online is now on who will succeed Daniel Craig. While fans continue to throw out every young British actor possible for the new 007, there is at least one acclaimed actor who does not see himself as a fit, and that is none other than "Smoke" star Taron Egerton.

Following Ozzy Osbourne’s recent passing, Variety reports that Sony’s previously announced biopic about Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne is still moving forward.
A representative for Polygram Entertainment confirmed that the project — initially announced back in 2020 — continues to gestate, and “they’re currently in negotiations with a director, which could be confirmed very soon.”
As previously reported, Sony announced that it would be helming a film about the Prince of Darkness and his relationship with wife and manager Sharon. The studio teamed up with Polygram Entertainment and Osbourne Media to develop the film, which was set to be produced by Sharon, Jack, and Aimee Osbourne alongside Polygram’s Michele Anthony and David Blackman and Sony’s Andrea Giannetti.
Lee Hall, script writer for the 2019 Elton John biopic Rocketman, was tapped to write the screenplay, and per the Polygram rep’s latest statement, Hall and the production team are all still on board.

Taron Egerton's new mystery thriller is here, and it now has a Rotten Tomatoes score. Egerton will be best known to many audiences for his role as Eggsy in the Kingsman franchise, a role he first played back in 2014.
Egerton returned as the spy character in 2017's Kingsman: The Golden Circle, and he is expected to return for one more outing with Kingsman 3 from franchise director Matthew Vaughn. Outside his work in this action spy franchise, however, Egerton has established himself as a bankable star.
The Welsh actor took on the role of Elton John in Rocketman (2019), which was a big critical and commercial success. He also stars in Carry-On (2024), an action thriller that now stands as the second most-watched English-language Netflix movie ever.

Taron Egerton doesn’t even blink when asked what he likes about Nate, the brutally violent ex-con he plays in Lionsgate’s new gritty crime thriller, “She Rides Shotgun.”
“I actually like that he hates himself,” he says. “He’s got that kind of reluctant hero thing, the kind of tortured hero, but he would never think of himself in those terms. He’s only reflective about his mistakes. I think he’s somebody that kind of walks around feeling like he’s not fit to be in the world, certainly not fit to be a father. That kind of emotional inarticulacy is quite interesting to me. I think it’s really human to walk around with a voice in your head telling you that you’ve fucked up.”

The race to be Denis Villeneuve’s 007 is hotting up, but Taron Egerton has bowed out.

In 2019, Taron Egerton wowed audiences with his portrayal of British singer-songwriter Elton John in Rocketman. Four years later, the actor played an entirely different real-life figure, that of video game designer and entrepreneur Henk Rogers, in the 2023 biographical thriller Tetris.

For the unversed, Neil Druckmann was also the co-developer of the original, immensely popular video game franchise. Later, he joined forces with Craig Mazin to adapt the post-apocalyptic tale for the small screen. Now, the big question is: Can Craig Mazin handle The Last of Us Season 3 without Neil Druckmann’s creative input? Here’s our take.

Here’s the official synopsis for She Rides Shotgun courtesy of Lionsgate:
“In the gritty, explosive action-thriller She Rides Shotgun, Taron Egerton stars as newly released ex-con Nate. Marked for death by unrelenting enemies, Nate must now protect his estranged 11-year-old daughter, Polly (Ana Sophia Heger) at all costs. Taron Egerton will always be known for his role as Eggsy in the Kingsman movies, but his latest crime thriller series, now streaming on Apple TV+, just beat one of his most iconic films in a crucial statistic. Egerton stars alongside Jurnee Smollett and Rafe Spall in Smoke, the show following a troubled detective and an arson investigator who are chasing two serial arsonists. After debuting with a 69% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, Smoke has come to rest at a 73% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. Both of these scores are higher than Kingsman: The Golden Circle, which sits at a “rotten” 51% from critics and 64% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite these lower scores, Kingsman: The Golden Circle still grossed $410 million at the box office against a $104 million budget.
Although he’s inseparable from Eggsy in the Kingsman films, Egerton has also delivered various hits in the last few years to help bolster his resume.

Taron Egerton’s new crime drama just debuted on Apple TV+ on June 27, but it’s already climbing the Top 10 streaming charts. Per FlixPatrol, Smoke, which also stars Jurnee Smollett, has risen to the No. 3 spot on Apple TV+’s Top 10 chart. As of June 28, Smoke is just behind Stick and Murderbot and is ahead of Apple TV+ mainstays like Severanceand Ted Lasso.
Egerton notably starred in Netflix’s massive 2024 hit film Carry-On and 2019’s Elton John biopic Rocketman. He was also nominated for an Emmy in 2023 for his performance in Apple TV+’s Black Bird. Smoke reunites Egerton with Black Bird creator Dennis Lehane, who also created the new series. Lehane has written several novels that have been turned into films or TV shows, including Mystic River, Shutter Island, Gone Baby Gone, The Wire, Boardwalk Empire, and Mr. Mercedes.

Apple TV+ is known for great sci-fi shows and, frankly, for losing a ridiculous amount of money for Apple. However, speaking from a fan's point of view, the streaming service is a reliable port of call for just about every genre of well-produced, imaginative movies and series made by some of the best creators and actors in the game. From the amazing entertainment industry comedy "The Studio" to the literally mind-bending office hellscape of "Severance" and the scruffy spy shenanigans of "Slow Horses," the best TV shows on Apple TV+ offer plenty of bang for the viewer's buck, and the streamer is adding more stuff all the time.
The newest member of the Apple TV+ array of well-made shows is "Smoke," a nine-part arson drama from Dennis Lehane ("Shutter Island"). Drawing inspiration from the real-life crimes of serial arsonist John Leonard Orr and truth.media's "Firebug" podcast, "Smoke" stars Taron Egerton...

Not that long ago, star Taron Egerton and writer Dennis Lehane delivered one of the most acclaimed series on the Apple TV+ roster: the prison drama Black Bird. They've now reunited on the crime thriller Smoke, a nine-episode limited series in which Egerton plays an arson investigator who may or may not be entirely reliable as a protagonist. He's paired up with a detective, played by Jurnee Smollett, and together, they're tasked with tracking down a couple of fire-starters before things become too hot to handle. Unlike Black Bird, however, Smoke has debuted with a mediocre response from critics.
It currently holds a 68% score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is far lower than the 98% score that Black Bird is sitting on. The aggregator website's consensus reads, "Smoke obscures its appeal with coy plotting until it eventually lights a fire under its story, but commanding turns from Taron Egerton and Jurnee Smollett keep this drama watchable throughout.

A new true-crime miniseries is coming to Apple TV+ and features a pretty stacked cast — so what do critics think of "Smoke," the latest effort from showrunner and writer Dennis Lehane?
First things first: "Smoke," which uses the podcast "Firebug" as its loose source material stars Taron Egerton (from the "Kingsman" films and "Rocketman"), Jurnee Smollett (who delivered a spectacular performance in "Birds of Prey" back in 2020), Adina Porter (a familiar figure in Ryan Murphy's extended universe), Rafe Spall, Anna Chlumsky (a "Veep" standout), and Hollywood mainstays John Leguizamo and Greg Kinnear. The gist here is that arson investigator Dave Gudsen (Egerton) and hard-boiled detective Michelle Calderon (Smollett) are trying to figure out who set a massive fire in the Pacific Northwest, and the answer is shockingly complicated.
Crime dramas are an industry staple these days, and it feels like there's a new entry into the genre on a basically constant basis.

It’s been nearly three years since the creepy crime limited series Black Bird was released on Apple TV+ and introduced fans to Taron Egerton’s dark side as drug-lord James “Jimmy” Keene. This role is the first time in a few years that fans have seen the Rocketman star in a role that didn’t involve singing. Now, Egerton is back in another crime drama with Apple TV+, Smoke, not as a drug lord but as arson investigator Dave Gudsen, who is tracking two serial arsonists alongside Detective Mitchell Calderon (Jurnee Smollett). Besides the return of Egerton as one of the show’s leads and executive producer, there were also some familiar faces from Black Bird involved in the creative side of producing Smoke, including the creator and writer himself, Dennis Lehane. With the release of this fiery summer drama just around the corner, here’s everything you need to know before watching Smoke.

Variety has learned that the series, titled “Trinity,” has been picked up for eight episodes. The official logline states, “A heroic female Naval Officer (Mbatha-Raw) becomes involved with the outwardly charismatic Secretary of Defense (Madden), only to discover he may be at the heart of a dangerous conspiracy.”
Mbatha-Raw’s character is named Commander Katherine Decker, described as serving “as second-in-command on the USS Kansas, a nuclear submarine and one of the deadliest weapons on Earth.” Madden will star in the series as Secretary of Defense Webb Preston. “With a technology background that makes him different from most politicians, Webb’s innovation and purpose are seen as a threat in more ways than one,” per the character description.

Bruce Springsteen, the American artist behind rock albums like Born in the U.S.A. and Born to Run, is the latest singer to get his own musical biopic. The film is titled Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, and will depict the artist's journey when recording the 1982 album Nebraska, as well as the highlights of his whole life. The singer participated in the production of the biopic, which delves into truly personal events. As important as his presence must have been to maintain authenticity, there were some scenes that he refused to watch during production because he didn't want to interfere with the actors' organic performance.
Springsteen spoke to Rolling Stone about his entire career, and the subject of Deliver Me From Nowhere came up. The film is written and directed by Scott Cooper, and it's based on the book by Warren Zanes, Deliver Me From Nowhere: The Making of Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska.

Fans think starring in one of the biggest shows on television would make someone rich in an instant, but for Richard Madden, he had to swallow his pride and accept peanuts as payment for his iconic appearance in Game of Thrones. Yes, that HBO series with a humongous budget allegedly could not afford to pay Madden his worth.
That frustrated the actor so much that, at one point, he did not care whether or not his costars were paid more than him. As long as he’s getting the right amount of paycheck, then he’s good. Still, he’s thankful for the opportunity that the show has given him.

Gaby Hoffman speaks on Jeremy Allen White's performance in Deliver Me From Nowhere. This movie is an upcoming biopic of music icon Bruce Springsteen, telling the story of his journey making his 1982 album Nebraska. The film is directed by Scott Cooper and features The Bear's White as the main star. Hoffmann plays Adele Springsteen, Bruce's mother. In addition to White and Hoffman, Deliver Me From Nowhere features a leading cast including Stephen Graham, Paul Walter Hauser, Jeremy Strong, and Marc Maron.
In an interview with ScreenRant for Poker Face season 2, Hoffmann previews White's performance in the role. What do you expect to get from the fountain? The answer could only be youth – unless you’re starring in the new Guy Ritchie movie, in which case there’s something more at play. Apple has released the newest trailer for Ritchie’s Fountain of Youth, starring John Krasinski and Natalie Portman who head out on an adventure as part of a family legacy.
The latest trailer for Fountain of Youth comes just a few weeks off of the first one, which, as is the case here, feels like some sort of expansion on the National Treasure franchise. But we’ll hold off complete judgment until...

Alright, Potterheads, grab your wands, floo powder, and maybe a pint of Butterbeer because the magic is officially back! HBO is diving headfirst into the Wizarding World with a brand-new Harry Potter series, and we are this close to hexing someone out of sheer excitement. Whether you’re cautiously hopeful or already screaming “Accio nostalgia!” at your screen, one thing is clear: this Harry Potter series has some massive robes to fill.
Let’s be honest: Harry Potter wasn’t just a series; it was a cultural event.
