The 52nd Telluride Film Festival is now in the books. Margot Robbie, Ryan Coogler, Oprah Winfrey, David Oyelowo, Rian Johnson, Janet Yang, Kathy Kennedy and Frank Marshall were among those who came just to watch movies. Screenings were introduced with a group meditation (Chloé Zhao), a song (Jesse Plemons) and a wave (man of few words Bruce Springsteen). Adam Sandler and Emma Stone posed for photos in the streets with ecstatic local schoolkids. And the Oscar race came into clearer focus.

Dexter Fletcher, perhaps best known for helming Elton John biopic Rocketman, is attached to direct The League of Gentlemen, Paramount Pictures’ reimagining of a 1960 British heist movie.

Bek Smith, who earned a story credit on the billion-dollar-grossing Moana 2, wrote the script.

The feature project is described as a modern-day remake of the 1960 movie of the same name. That film, which adapted a 1958 novel by John Boland, told of former British Army officers who rob a bank in London. Jack Hawkins and Richard Attenborough were among the stars.

Opera and theater producer Dalia Ibelhauptaitė, who is married to Fletcher, is attached to exec produce. Michael Attenborough, Richard Attenborough’s son, and Emma Forbes, daughter of the original movie’s screenwriter, Bryan Forbes, are also exec producing.

“Rocketman” director Dexter Fletcher is attached to direct a remake of “The League of Gentlemen” for Paramount Pictures, TheWrap has exclusively learned.

While details are being kept under wraps, the movie is a modern take based on the original 1960 heist film. “Moana 2” writer Bek Smith wrote the script for the remake.

The project was previously set up at Skydance, prior to the merger.

The original “The League of Gentlemen” was a British heist action comedy directed by Basil Dearden that starred Jack Hawkins, Nigel Patrick, Roger Livesey and Richard Attenborough. The film is based on John Boland’s 1958 novel of the same name.

Scott Cooper’s Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere has been born to make an Oscar run.

The Boss biopic, starring Jeremy Allen White as the iconic rocker, is earning largely positive reviews following its Friday debut at the Telluride Film Festival. Adapted from Warren Zanes’s biography Deliver Me From Nowhere, the film explores a pivotal two-year stretch in Bruce Springsteen’s life, centering on the introspective period that led to the creation of his 1982 solo acoustic album Nebraska. Odessa Young plays Springsteen’s love interest, while Jeremy Strong takes on the role of Jon Landau, his loyal manager.

Following its debut, the film boasted a rare 100 percent Rotten Tomatoes score.

Over the past decade, there has been a deluge of big Hollywood movies about rock stars, among them 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody, 2019’s Rocketman and 2022’s Elvis, each of which made a fortune at the box office and was Oscar-nominated, with Bohemian Rhapsody winning four little gold men, including best actor, and Rocketman taking home one. Those films certainly addressed dark aspects of their subjects’ personal lives, but they were essentially jukebox musicals, excuses to showcase the greatest hits from across their subjects’ careers. That, for better or worse, depending on what you’re looking for, is not what you should expect from Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere. And it will be interesting to see how that goes over with the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

After 15 years of bringing James Bond to life over the course of five films, Daniel Craig officially retired from the role of 007 in 2021's "No Time To Die." The film served as a definitive send-off to Craig's iteration of the character, who was subject to varied quality with his films. The odd-numbered entries were great, while the even-numbered entries left much to be desired ("Quantum of Solace" and "Spectre").

The studio teamed up with Polygram Entertainment and Osbourne Media to develop the film, which was set to be produced by Sharon, Jack, and Aimee Osbourne alongside Polygram’s Michele Anthony and David Blackman and Sony’s Andrea Giannetti.

Lee Hall, script writer for the 2019 Elton John biopic Rocketman, was tapped to write the screenplay, and per the Polygram rep’s latest statement, Hall and the production team are all still on board.

London-born Appleby enjoyed a lifelong collaboration with filmmaker Alan Parker, with whom he first worked on Bugsy Malone, Parker’s first major feature film. They went on to work together on Midnight Express, Mississippi Burning, The Commitments, Evita and The Life Of David Gale.

Parker died in 2020.

Taron Egerton will always be known for his role as Eggsy in the Kingsman movies, but his latest crime thriller series, now streaming on Apple TV+, just beat one of his most iconic films in a crucial statistic. Egerton stars alongside Jurnee Smollett and Rafe Spall in Smoke, the show following a troubled detective and an arson investigator who are chasing two serial arsonists. After debuting with a 69% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, Smoke has come to rest at a 73% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. Both of these scores are higher than Kingsman: The Golden Circle, which sits at a “rotten” 51% from critics and 64% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite these lower scores, Kingsman: The Golden Circle still grossed $410 million at the box office against a $104 million budget.

Although he’s inseparable from Eggsy in the Kingsman films, Egerton has also delivered various hits in the last few years to help bolster his resume.

Taron Egerton’s new crime drama just debuted on Apple TV+ on June 27, but it’s already climbing the Top 10 streaming charts. Per FlixPatrol, Smoke, which also stars Jurnee Smollett, has risen to the No. 3 spot on Apple TV+’s Top 10 chart. As of June 28, Smoke is just behind Stick and Murderbot and is ahead of Apple TV+ mainstays like Severanceand Ted Lasso.

Egerton notably starred in Netflix’s massive 2024 hit film Carry-On and 2019’s Elton John biopic Rocketman. He was also nominated for an Emmy in 2023 for his performance in Apple TV+’s Black Bird. Smoke reunites Egerton with Black Bird creator Dennis Lehane, who also created the new series. Lehane has written several novels that have been turned into films or TV shows, including Mystic River, Shutter Island, Gone Baby Gone, The Wire, Boardwalk Empire, and Mr. Mercedes.

However, speaking from a fan's point of view, the streaming service is a reliable port of call for just about every genre of well-produced, imaginative movies and series made by some of the best creators and actors in the game. From the amazing entertainment industry comedy "The Studio" to the literally mind-bending office hellscape of "Severance" and the scruffy spy shenanigans of "Slow Horses," the best TV shows on Apple TV+ offer plenty of bang for the viewer's buck, and the streamer is adding more stuff all the time.

Not that long ago, star Taron Egerton and writer Dennis Lehane delivered one of the most acclaimed series on the Apple TV+ roster: the prison drama Black Bird. They've now reunited on the crime thriller Smoke, a nine-episode limited series in which Egerton plays an arson investigator who may or may not be entirely reliable as a protagonist. He's paired up with a detective, played by Jurnee Smollett, and together, they're tasked with tracking down a couple of fire-starters before things become too hot to handle. Unlike Black Bird, however, Smoke has debuted with a mediocre response from critics.

It currently holds a 68% score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is far lower than the 98% score that Black Bird is sitting on. The aggregator website's consensus reads, "Smoke obscures its appeal with coy plotting until it eventually lights a fire under its story, but commanding turns from Taron Egerton and Jurnee Smollett keep this drama watchable throughout.

Netflix has greenlit a new thriller series from Jed Mercurio with Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Richard Madden attached to star.

Variety has learned that the series, titled “Trinity,” has been picked up for eight episodes. The official logline states, “A heroic female Naval Officer (Mbatha-Raw) becomes involved with the outwardly charismatic Secretary of Defense (Madden), only to discover he may be at the heart of a dangerous conspiracy.”

Mbatha-Raw’s character is named Commander Katherine Decker, described as serving “as second-in-command on the USS Kansas, a nuclear submarine and one of the deadliest weapons on Earth.” Madden will star in the series as Secretary of Defense Webb Preston. “With a technology background that makes him different from most politicians, Webb’s innovation and purpose are seen as a threat in more ways than one,” per the character description.

Actor Gailard Sartain, known for his role on the classic TV series Hee Haw, has passed away.

According to an announcement made by The Church Studio in Tulsa, Oklahama, where his wife sometimes volunteers, Sartain died on Tuesday, June 17, following a long illness. He was 78 years old.

"We are saddened by the loss of Gailard Sartain, an extraordinary actor, artist, and comedian," a Facebook post reads. "His late night visits in the 1970s to the studio after filming Mazeppa are fondly remembered. Gailard's artwork is showcased on the cover of Leon Russell's 1975 album 'Will O’ the Wisp.' Our condolences are with Mary Jo, Gailard's wife and a committed volunteer at The Church Studio."

Hee Haw's Misty Rowe also wrote in a reaction post about the news, "God Bless You Gailard Sartain. You were my brother on Hee Haw Honeys and my friend on Hee Haw for 19 years!

Bruce Springsteen, the American artist behind rock albums like Born in the U.S.A. and Born to Run, is the latest singer to get his own musical biopic. The film is titled Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, and will depict the artist's journey when recording the 1982 album Nebraska, as well as the highlights of his whole life. As important as his presence must have been to maintain authenticity, there were some scenes that he refused to watch during production because he didn't want to interfere with the actors' organic performance.

Before everyone puts their brains on pause for the weekend, Lionsgate wants audiences to know about the release date for the studio’s upcoming action-thriller She Rides Shotgun, starring Taron Egerton and Ana Sophia Heger. In the film, Egerton and Heger play a father-daughter duo on the run from a checkered past, the law, and a gang wanting to protect its turf.

Rising UK talent Kit Connor is in early talks to star in Alex Garland’s live-action film based on video game Elden Ring, according to reports.

This movie is an upcoming biopic of music icon Bruce Springsteen, telling the story of his journey making his 1982 album Nebraska. The film is directed by Scott Cooper and features The Bear's White as the main star. Hoffmann plays Adele Springsteen, Bruce's mother. In addition to White and Hoffman, Deliver Me From Nowhere features a leading cast including Stephen Graham, Paul Walter Hauser, Jeremy Strong, and Marc Maron.

In an interview with ScreenRant for Poker Face season 2, Hoffmann previews White's performance in the role. Hoffman notes that she "didn't actually get to see Jeremy embody Bruce" because her scenes were filmed with a younger version of the character. She did, however, preview Springsteen's own reaction to White's performance, noting that the musician "couldn't believe that what he was hearing wasn't his own voice." She thinks White "really went for it.
