Captain Matthew A. Hardinger, in temporary command of the U.S.S. Enterprise, arrives at Rigel III in order to aid the Rigelian government in the throes of civil unrest. Captain Kirk has undergone a nervous breakdown and is confined to his quarters in compliance with Dr. McCoy's orders. The Enterprise crew is not particularly fond of Captain Hardinger's leadership style.

Captain Hardinger and Captain Powell meet in Hardinger's personal quarters to discuss the possibility of acquiring some Egolithium for Starfleet. Introduction of Chef Bev and we get to hear the Captain playing his cello. We are introduced to his Lava Lamp, Juliette his Horta companion, have some Talosian Bourbon, and so on.

Captain Hardinger gets grilled by The Admiral for using unnecessary force against the protesters on Rigel III. Visibly shaken, he retires to his quarters to play his cello and blow off steam. Unfortunately his E.E.H malfunctions and he loses it, flashes back to his childhood, and gets down on his hands and knees to pray. His prayers are answered by an all-powerful being who appears in his quarters claiming to be The Lord God Almighty.

Captain Hardinger and Captain Powell crash land on Rigel III. The encounter yet another all-powerful being claiming to be The Lord God Almighty who is keeping watch over a Giant Donut of Eternity, which proves to be a gateway into The Matrix. Having entered The Matrix, the two captains embark on a search for The Oracle of Rigel III.
