After making his daytime television debut last month as an original cast member of the new soap opera “Beyond the Gates,” actor Maurice Johnson is set to exit his role as Dr. Ted Richardson in May, with Keith D. Robinson (“A Million Little Things”) replacing him.

Since news of the casting switch first broke last Friday, Johnson had been reposting and resharing comments by some of the show’s most loyal fans who’ve wondered what may have occurred, if anything in particular, to spur the change.

While the show has not yet addressed any changes to its cast, Johnson did take to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday to share that he’s got a little more than 30 episodes left to go before his final episode airs and that he’ll be back on screen as soon as Thursday.

Tyler Perry is back with another thrilling drama that’s centered on two women whose polar opposite lives collide into an explosive journey that reveals the dark secrets of a wealthy family.

The 16-episode series premieres on Thursday and is the latest project that’s come from Perry’s creative, multi-year deal with Netflix. The show is written, produced and directed by Perry. “Beauty in Black” will be a two-part series, and the first part is available to stream now.

Under their multi-year first-look deal, Perry is contracted to write, direct, and produce movies and TV shows, and Beauty in Black is the latest project to come from that deal. Part 1 of the new series drops on Netflix on October 24, and it consists of 16 hour-long episodes.

BET is expanding the reach of its shows from Tyler Perry.

The Paramount-owned (for now, at least) outlet is launching two Fast channels that will feature episodes of the prolific Perry’s BET and BET+ series. The two channels, straightforwardly titled BET Tyler Perry Drama and BET Tyler Perry Comedy, will feature all of Perry’s BET output on a free streaming platform for the first time.

The two channels will have some 600 hours’ worth of episodes from Perry’s series Sistas, The Oval, House of Payne, Ruthless, All the Queen’s Men, Zatima, Assisted Living and Bruh. Other series that Perry produced for TBS and OWN before signing a megadeal with BET — including Meet the Browns, The Haves and the Have Nots and For Better or Worse — will join the Fast channels later.

The Netflix show Survival of the Thickest includes an all-star cast of comedians and actors. The series follows Mavis Beaumont, a stylist who discovers her long-time boyfriend has been cheating on her. Mavis must begin her dating life again as a single, black, fat woman in New York City. Additionally, her career booms when she gets a client that goes viral. Over the course of the series, Mavis deals with both insecurity and confidence. By the end of season 1, she becomes more secure in her professional abilities and personal desires.

The project reunites Smith with Fox, Empire and Star co-creator Daniels, Star executive producer Gist and 20th TV. The Urban Movie Channel has renewed its original series A House Divided for a second season, with the soapy, multi-generational family drama created by Dan Garcia in production and set to return to the AMC-backed streaming service in the spring.

Rhyon Nicole Brown, who recurred in Season 4 of Empire, has been promoted to series regular for the upcoming fifth season of Fox’s hit musical family drama. In addition, Katlynn Simone and A.Z. Kelsey have joined in recurring roles.

Brown plays Maya, daughter of Cookie’s fellow inmate Poundcake. When Cookie finds her this season Maya has spiraled a bit after discovering her true parentage. Cookie has to step in and be a mother figure to her, helping her find her way. Brown appeared in two episodes in Season 4.

Simone will play Treasure, a prison social worker whose life is turned around by Cookie when she sees her star potential. Kelsey will portray Jeff Kingsley, a hotshot, Silicon Valley genius, turned label executive; business wunderkind. Ivy League with an edge and a dark secret.
