Julia Roberts got emotional as her new movie, “After the Hunt” — Luca Guadagnino’s drama in which she plays a troubled professor — wowed Venice on Friday night.
The Amazon MGM Studios release premiered on the Lido to a six-minute standing ovation. As the clapping continued, Roberts wiped away tears, blew kisses to the crowd and hugged her director and co-stars Ayo Edebiri (who also teared up) and Andrew Garfield.
Guadagnino and Roberts both paused to sign autographs on the red carpet before entering the packed Sala Grande to cheers of “Julia!” and “Luca!” Garfield was also a fan favorite, taking selfies with the crowd while sporting a sharp blue suit and freshly-shaven look.
In “After the Hunt,” Roberts plays Alma Olsson, a revered Ivy League professor who is forced to grapple with her own secretive past after one of her colleagues is accused of crossing a line with her student.

Netflix has officially renewed the British crime thriller Dept. Q for a second season, only a few months after its debut on the platform. The series, created by Scott Frank and Chandni Lakhani, is based on the novels by Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen and first premiered on May 29, 2025.
The news of the renewal was shared in August, and the creative team behind the show didn’t hold back their excitement.
In a joint statement, Qureshi and Manda Levin said, “We are raring to return to Carl Morck and his band of glorious misfits at ‘Dept. Q.’ Scott Frank brought us best-in-class storytelling and thrilled Netflix audiences worldwide. We can’t wait to see what Morck and the gang uncover in Season 2…. Edinburgh, we’re back.”
Andy Harries and Rob Bullock from Left Bank Pictures also reacted to the news. Bullock joked about what might come next, saying, “So, we are going downstairs to ‘Dept.

“I’d like to thank Netflix for giving us the opportunity to further investigate Department Q’s storylines,” said Goode in a statement. “We have a wonderful cast and crew, headed by our resident genius Scott Frank.

You’ve seen the Endless in all their glory over two seasons of The Sandman, and now the anthropomorphic embodiments of Destiny, Death, Dream, Destruction, Desire, Despair, and Delirium have been immortalized in stunning new fashion.
In celebration of the live-action series’ epic finale, which is now streaming on Netflix, celebrated illustrator Rory Kurtz has painted a larger-than-life mural of the show’s vibrant characters and immersive worlds on one giant, intricately detailed digital canvas.

Fans love hearing Star Trek actors in new roles, yet it may be ignored how several Trek stars brought some classic sci-fi tales to life in audio dramas!
Star Trek actors are known for their variety of roles outside the franchise, which includes voice work in animation. Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis reunited for the beloved Gargoyles animated series, and other actors excel, taking on a wide array of voiceover roles.
However, one special audio project that brought together several notable Trek actors has fallen to the wayside of fans. It was short-lived when there was so much potential left, but what we got were some great adaptations of some classic sci-fi works, including Alien Voices.
It’s a project made as a love letter to both sci-fi and old radio shows, and it provided wonderful entertainment for the fans. It’s worth tracking down to see these Trek actors...

Star Trek’s most formidable villains have one of the most tragic origins in the franchise, but the mainstream shows refuse to get into this storyline. The Borg have long been the Federation’s most dangerous enemies, after being introduced in the The Next Generation episode Q Who, which was released in 1989. However, their connection to the Federation goes way back.
There have been several versions of the Borg’s origins, both in Star Trek canon and its extended universe, which includes books, comics, manga, and games. The novel trilogy Destiny actually establishes a tragic human origin for the Borg, which involves a Federation ship stranded in the Delta Quadrant without resources and having to fuse with another species to survive.
The Borg have long been established as a ruthless, parasitic alien force, which only thrives to assimilate more people into its hive mind. The human origins give some nuance...

Panchkula — In the evolving expanse of Punjabi music, where sonic excess and lyrical tropes often dominate the airwaves, Jassi Virk—born Jasvir Singh—has quietly but firmly emerged as a compelling alternative. Born in Panchkula and now based in Mohali, Jassi Virk has quietly emerged as one of the most compelling voices in the evolving Punjabi music scene—blending classical depth with digital innovation
Raised amid the cadence of tabla and the mellow harmonies of the harmonium, Virk’s musical foundation was shaped in the traditions of Indian classical music. Yet, like many from his generation, he initially walked a different path—pursuing engineering before shifting course to study vocals formally, earning a Bachelor of Education. That pivotal decision marked more than just a career change; it signaled the beginning of an artistic evolution defined by fluidity, introspection, and fearless experimentation.

When it was announced that Denis Villeneuve would be the next director to tackle the James Bond franchise, fans were pretty thrilled. When Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli stepped down some months back, many worried about the direction the franchise would take, especially now that Amazon owns the rights. Hardcore Bond fans feared the streamer—desperate for valuable IP—might exploit the series by churning out too many movies and, God forbid, too many bad spinoffs. It brought back memories of how Disney all but killed off goodwill for Star Wars with an exhausting barrage of subpar content. Would we end up with something as inane as a series centered on Q or Miss Moneypenny? Or The Felix Leiter Chronicles? But with the hiring of Denis Villeneuve—one of the biggest directors on the planet—Amazon MGM Studios seemed to be promising that 007 would stay where he belongs: on the big screen.

The FIFA Club World Cub final was held in the US for the first time on Sunday, as the match between Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain took place at East Rutherford, New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium. The event also featured the tournament’s first-ever halftime show, with Doja Cat, J Balvin, Tems, and surprise guests Coldplay performing high in the stands.
The cadre of international performers played a 15-minute spectacular from up in the nosebleeds thanks to an innovative stage created by halftime presenters Global Citizen and partner Christ Martin of Coldplay. Putting the stage in the stands allowed the production to avoid damaging the field’s freshly planted grass, and limited the changeover timing issues faced by Shakira’s halftime performance at the 2024 Copa America final.

The second season of The Sandman reaches our screens after much controversy in light of the scandal surrounding Neil Gaiman, the creator of the original Sandman comics. Season 2 picks up not too much time after the end of the first season. Dream of the Endless, played by an always-brilliant, deep-voiced, and imposing Tom Sturridge, has reclaimed all his objects of power after his time in prison at the hands of the human occultist Roderick Burgess, who was played back in season 1 by Charles Dance.

The 24th edition of the Transilvania International Film Festival has wrapped up in Romania.
During Saturday Night’s closing gala at the National Theatre in Cluj-Napoca, British director Mahdi Fleifel’s To a Land Unknown took home the Transilvania Trophy, the festival’s 10,000-euro top prize.
The film is described as an intense drama about two Palestinian refugees living in Athens, caught between petty scams and the hope of a better life in Germany. Amid a climate of despair and moral compromise, one spirals deeper into a cycle of manipulation and exploitation of those around him.
“It was more about survival than storytelling. We struggled for nearly ten years to make it,” said Fleifel, adding of the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict: “The problem in Palestine is not the Palestinians, it’s the occupation—and that must end.”
German director Noaz Deshe’s Xoftex won the €3,500 Best Directing Award, sponsored by the Romanian Cultural Institute.

The second and final season of The Sandman, based on the comic book series by Neil Gaiman, drops in just a couple weeks. The first season covered the first two volumes in the comic. The second will take things all the way to the end, which means we're skipping over a lot of material. I'm a little bummed we won't get to see the full tale adapted for the screen, but the trailer looks pretty promising. Watch below:
The trailer comes complete with a bevy of new, surreal images. Things begin in the Dreaming, the realm ruled over by our lead character Dream, aka Morpheus, aka the Sandman, aka a lot of other things (Tom Sturridge); when you're an eternal being who's been around since before the dawn of time, you pick up a lot of names:

Things begin in the Dreaming, the realm ruled over by our lead character Dream, aka Morpheus, aka the Sandman, aka a lot of other things (Tom Sturridge); when you're an eternal being who's been around since before the dawn of time, you pick up a lot of names:

K-pop stars Enhypen are in the middle of a banner year.
Back with their sixth EP, Desire : Unleash, the seven-member boy group under Hybe’s Belift Lab made their Coachella debut in April and are preparing to head out on a world tour across North America and Europe.
Enhypen — comprised of members Jungwon, Heeseung, Jay, Jake, Sunghoon, Sunoo and Ni-ki — were formed through the music survival show I-Land. The show, a joint venture between Hybe and Korean entertainment giant Cj Enm, aired on the Cj Enm-owned channel Mnet in South Korea.
On the latest album, the group, unsurprisingly, explores desire in all its forms. Their lead single, “Bad Desire (With or Without You)” is endlessly catchy and sonically in line with past releases. The otherworldly music video starts with a chilling voiceover: “Did you really think I could just stand by and watch you disappear?” Enhypen’s lore — the...

Focus Features has done a full takeover of the Angelika Film Center with The Phoenician Scheme on all six screens for filmmaker Wes Anderson’s latest. There’s a lobby and café redesign for full immersion, a jazz band, custom cocktails, t-shirts and totes as the film, which clocked a lengthy standing ovation at its recent Cannes world premiere (see Deadline review) bows theatrically in limited release at six locations including NYC’s Alamo Brooklyn and AMC Lincoln Square and AMC’s The Grove, Century City and Burbank in LA.
Around this time in 2023, Anderson’s Asteroid City, also from Focus, delivered a massive jolt to the arthouse and specialty world with a $790k three-day weekend, also at six theaters, including a takeover of the Landmark LA. The first look at the second season of The Sandmanhas been revealed. The highly-anticipated return of Dream (Tom Sturridge) will keep audiences on the edge of their seats once it premieres on Netflix in the near future. The second installment of the successful adaptation will find the protagonist looking for who he really is. Despite being a very confident lead, Dream continues to struggle with the weight of his identity and the consequences of his own narrative. Only the one known as Morpheus can take control of what awaits in the future of The Sandman.
The new images from the second season of The Sandman give audiences a fresh look at some of the new additions to the story, almost three years after the first installment made its way to Netflix. Desire (Mason Alexander Park), Despair (Donna Preston) and Delirium (Esmé Creed-Miles) are to reinforce the idea that abstract concepts...

On May 24, 2025, author Peter David passed away after a long series of health maladies. He was 68. David was best known to Trekkies as the writer of the best "Star Trek" tie-in novels, usually bringing a whimsical sense of humor and a lot of larger, headier concepts into his books. David penned the well-known "Star Trek: The Next Generation" novels "Imzadi," "Vendetta," and "Double Helix: Double or Nothing," along with the Q-related books "Q-Squared," "Q-In-Law," and "I, Q," which he penned with actor John de Lancie. He also wrote the "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" novels "The Siege" and "Wrath of the Prophets," and three spinoffs of the original series called "The Rift," "The Disinherited," and "The Captain's Daughter."
Most notably, David created his own "Star Trek" spinoff series in the form of "Star Trek: New Frontier." David assembled multiple supporting characters from "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and put...

New reporting suggests that Marvel Studios may be eyeing another magic-wielding MCU character to take over for Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch for the franchise's future. Olsen was last seen in 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, as the towering Mount Wundagore crumbled down upon her during her final battle with Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange. Thankfully, in the time since, MCU fans have been introduced to a new spell-slinger, Joe Locke's Wiccan (the consciousness of Wanda's son Billy transferred into the body of a random teenage boy).
Marvel Studios reportedly plans to develop another character to replace Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch in the MCU going forward, at least according to a new report from insider Alex Perez. That does not mean Olsen's Wanda character will not make her long-awaited comeback (as has been rumored for years). Still, the franchise's priorities seem to be shifting to the next generation of super-powered sorcerers.

Before all the modern day movie stars that fans obsess over on a daily basis, there was Gary Cooper. Tall, handsome, and with an (*ahem*) reputation in Hollywood for romancing starlets, he dominated the silver screen for decades. Cooper got his start during the silent era, when he made a name for himself as a romantic lead, before being one of the lucky male stars to transition successfully into talkies. Beginning in the 1930s, he hopped from genre to genre, starring in action adventure pictures and Westerns as well as showcasing a natural affinity for comedy.
During his time in Hollywood, he was nominated for five Academy Awards and took home two, in addition to earning an Academy Honorary Award just weeks before he died from cancer in 1961. His work as an actor was impressive, but his reputation and legacy are larger-than-life. There were rumors of romances between him and...

Netflix adds more gripping thriller series, more true crime, comedy, and as always, a show for the kids. I'm not sure, but I believe those are all separate entries. Let's dive in and find out.
You can always rely on Netflix for shows that will absolutely freak you out, amiright? For me, it's usually the bizarre kiddie shows. Yeah, I know that for some people, it's those behind-the-scenes investigations of some sordid true crime. The great thing about your favorite streaming service is that they have something for everyone. And wow, is that ever true this week.
Based on their taglines, the penultimate offerings this week seem like they've been stolen from the Hallmark and Lifetime channels. I mean, two of the three movies involve widows. You know that's the main character in every other movie on those channels.
Then again, if they were that cheesy, they would be on...

Certified Fresh Rt and backed by excellent exit polls, the bromance is generating tremendous word-of-mouth. Expands to a limited nationwide release over Memorial Day weekend as it settles into a long theatrical run throughout the summer.

Pedro Almodóvar, whose 1987 movieLaw of Desire featured a trans character and a trans actor, is furious about the treatment of trans people in the US. He delivered a righteously angry speech about the issue while accepting the Chaplin Award for Film at the Lincoln Center in New York recently.
Almodóvar's speech focused on the dangers of Donald Trump and the treatment experienced by one trans actress in particular: Hunter Schafer of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and Euphoria. She is now being forced to use a passport that has her gender marked as male.
Almodóvar did not hold back when it came to the state of politics in the United States. "I admit that there have been moments when I have doubted about coming to accept [the Chaplin award]," the director said, via Pink News. “I have doubted if it was appropriate to come to a country ruled by a narcissistic,...

Elon Musk said Tuesday he plans to dramatically scale back his work for the Department of Government Efficiency starting in May and turn his attention more fully to automaker Tesla, which just reported a 71% drop in net profit for the first quarter.
“I think I’ll continue to spend a day or two per week on government matters for as long as [President Donald Trump] would like me to do, and as long as it is useful. But starting next month, I’ll be allocating far more of my time to Tesla,” Musk said in opening remarks at an audiocast Q&A after Tesla’s March quarter numbers were announced.
The billionaire, who is the world’s richest individual according to Forbes, noted blowback against his role at Doge, a new entity launched by Donald Trump to unearth what it says are billions of dollars of fraud and abuse in government.

Days ahead of kicking off their 2025 North American tour in Seattle, Fontaines D.C. have released a deluxe edition of their acclaimed 2024 album, Romance, featuring three new tracks: “Before You I Just Forget,” the previously-released single “It’s Amazing to Be Young,” and a mash-up of “Starburster” and David Lynch’s “In Heaven (Lady in the Radiator Song).”
Now spanning 14 tracks in total, the deluxe version of Romance reaffirms why Consequence named the band our 2024 Band of the Year, melding their post-punk grit with dreamy moments of introspection. Spoiler Alert: This post contains details from the Season 3 finale of HBO’s The White Lotus.

Bring Them Down (Christopher Andrews)
Christopher Andrews’ Bring Them Down is an endurance test with no payoff. Opening with a jarring car crash on a windy road in rural Ireland, the film soon adds scenes of gruesome animal cruelty, an ear literally being blown off someone’s head, and then further sequences of gruesome animal cruelty. Ben Affleck took the stage at SXSW to discuss The Accountant 2, where he reprised his role as Christian Wolff. During the film’s world premiere, one scene in particular had the audience in Austin roaring with laughter—his attempt at line dancing.
Christian, typically uncomfortable in social situations, begins the film struggling at a speed dating event. Later, he finds himself in a country bar, where he observes the repetitive motions of a group on the dance floor. After an awkward exchange with a woman at his booth, he joins in, mastering the steps with ease despite wearing orthopedic sneakers instead of cowboy boots. The moment lands him a phone number and became a highlight for the SXSW crowd.
“For me, the challenge, of course, was the months and months I spent training to line dance. It was a stunt for me,” Affleck joked onstage at the Paramount Theater.
