Julia Roberts got emotional as her new movie, “After the Hunt” — Luca Guadagnino’s drama in which she plays a troubled professor — wowed Venice on Friday night.

The Amazon MGM Studios release premiered on the Lido to a six-minute standing ovation. As the clapping continued, Roberts wiped away tears, blew kisses to the crowd and hugged her director and co-stars Ayo Edebiri (who also teared up) and Andrew Garfield.

Guadagnino and Roberts both paused to sign autographs on the red carpet before entering the packed Sala Grande to cheers of “Julia!” and “Luca!” Garfield was also a fan favorite, taking selfies with the crowd while sporting a sharp blue suit and freshly-shaven look.

In “After the Hunt,” Roberts plays Alma Olsson, a revered Ivy League professor who is forced to grapple with her own secretive past after one of her colleagues is accused of crossing a line with her student.

Musician Bif Naked, Pamela Carolina Martinez and Joshua Odjick (The Long Walk, Wildhood) are starring in Javier Badillo’s sci-fi comedy Lupe Q and the Galactic Earworms being shopped to international buyers at the Toronto Film Festival.

Martinez stars as the titular Lupe, head of a Latinx punk rock band who discovers only her piercing musical scream can stop an alien invasion. So she and her bandmates become the target of two warring alien races hellbent on destroying each other, and taking planet Earth down with them.

With the help of Lupe’s sweet, shotgun-toting Abuela, played by Wanda Ayala, Pachi (Florence Boule-Moineau) and her high-powered, socialite mom Karen (Laurence Leboeuf), the gang of misfits do all they can to save the world.

The ensemble cast for Lupe Q, which has started production in suburban Vancouver, includes Bif Naked as Buzkill DJ, Odjick, Andreas Apergis, Lee Majdoub, Alessandro Juliani and Panta Mosleh.

Netflix has officially renewed the British crime thriller Dept. Q for a second season, only a few months after its debut on the platform. The series, created by Scott Frank and Chandni Lakhani, is based on the novels by Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen and first premiered on May 29, 2025.

The news of the renewal was shared in August, and the creative team behind the show didn’t hold back their excitement.

In a joint statement, Qureshi and Manda Levin said, “We are raring to return to Carl Morck and his band of glorious misfits at ‘Dept. Q.’ Scott Frank brought us best-in-class storytelling and thrilled Netflix audiences worldwide. We can’t wait to see what Morck and the gang uncover in Season 2…. Edinburgh, we’re back.”

Andy Harries and Rob Bullock from Left Bank Pictures also reacted to the news. Bullock joked about what might come next, saying, “So, we are going downstairs to ‘Dept.

Netflix has ordered a second season of Dept. Q, its British crime procedural that’s an adaptation of Jussi Adler-Olsen’s novels.

Matthew Goode will return as Dci Carl Morck, as will Alexej Manvelov as Akram, Leah Byrne as Rose and Jamie Sives as Hardy. Like the first season, Season 2 will be filmed and set in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The drama, which spent six weeks in the Global Top Ten shows on Netflix, follows Morck as he heads up Dept. Q from the basement of an Edinburgh police station. The unit is charged with cases previously deemed unsolvable.

Scott Frank serves as writer and director. He also executive produces with Rob Bullock and Charlotte Moore.

“I’d like to thank Netflix for giving us the opportunity to further investigate Department Q’s storylines,” said Goode in a statement. “We have a wonderful cast and crew, headed by our resident genius Scott Frank.

In celebration of the live-action series’ epic finale, which is now streaming on Netflix, celebrated illustrator Rory Kurtz has painted a larger-than-life mural of the show’s vibrant characters and immersive worlds on one giant, intricately detailed digital canvas.

The stellar final image, which you can check out above, took about three months to paint. The 24th edition of the Transilvania International Film Festival has wrapped up in Romania.

During Saturday Night’s closing gala at the National Theatre in Cluj-Napoca, British director Mahdi Fleifel’s To a Land Unknown took home the Transilvania Trophy, the festival’s 10,000-euro top prize.

The film is described as an intense drama about two Palestinian refugees living in Athens, caught between petty scams and the hope of a better life in Germany. Amid a climate of despair and moral compromise, one spirals deeper into a cycle of manipulation and exploitation of those around him.

“It was more about survival than storytelling. We struggled for nearly ten years to make it,” said Fleifel, adding of the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict: “The problem in Palestine is not the Palestinians, it’s the occupation—and that must end.”

German director Noaz Deshe’s Xoftex won the €3,500 Best Directing Award, sponsored by the Romanian Cultural Institute.

Mahdi Fleifel’s “To a Land Unknown” won the Transilvania Trophy at the Transilvania Film Festival, Romania’s most prominent film fest. K-pop stars Enhypen are in the middle of a banner year.

Back with their sixth EP, Desire : Unleash, the seven-member boy group under Hybe’s Belift Lab made their Coachella debut in April and are preparing to head out on a world tour across North America and Europe.

Enhypen — comprised of members Jungwon, Heeseung, Jay, Jake, Sunghoon, Sunoo and Ni-ki — were formed through the music survival show I-Land. The show, a joint venture between Hybe and Korean entertainment giant Cj Enm, aired on the Cj Enm-owned channel Mnet in South Korea.

New reporting suggests that Marvel Studios may be eyeing another magic-wielding MCU character to take over for Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch for the franchise's future. Pedro Almodóvar, whose 1987 movieLaw of Desire featured a trans character and a trans actor, is furious about the treatment of trans people in the US. He delivered a righteously angry speech about the issue while accepting the Chaplin Award for Film at the Lincoln Center in New York recently.

Almodóvar's speech focused on the dangers of Donald Trump and the treatment experienced by one trans actress in particular: Hunter Schafer of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and Euphoria. She is now being forced to use a passport that has her gender marked as male.

Ben Affleck took the stage at SXSW to discuss The Accountant 2, where he reprised his role as Christian Wolff. During the film’s world premiere, one scene in particular had the audience in Austin roaring with laughter—his attempt at line dancing.

Christian, typically uncomfortable in social situations, begins the film struggling at a speed dating event. Later, he finds himself in a country bar, where he observes the repetitive motions of a group on the dance floor. After an awkward exchange with a woman at his booth, he joins in, mastering the steps with ease despite wearing orthopedic sneakers instead of cowboy boots. The moment lands him a phone number and became a highlight for the SXSW crowd.

“For me, the challenge, of course, was the months and months I spent training to line dance. It was a stunt for me,” Affleck joked onstage at the Paramount Theater.
